Ну что ж, мне удалось на выходные утащить новинку домой, не думаю, что этого времени достаточно, для того чтобы назвать статью полноценным обзором. Скорее это ряд впечатлений от X, плюс собственноручно снятые фотографии, видео. Как и в случае с серией P, вскоре новый ноутбук попадет в руки на пару недель, и вот тогда я напишу расширенный и дополненный материал. Тем не менее, кой-какие моменты удастся раскрыть уже сейчас.

Начнем с того, что Sony VAIO X я уже посвятил одну статью, называлась она «Смесь про X», ссылка ниже.

Рекомендую почитать, повторять здесь свои мысли про прародителя под названием X505 и прочее не буду. Давайте лучше пристально посмотрим на Sony VAIO X и разберемся, для кого это устройство, зачем оно нужно.

Позиционирование

Для компании Sony сегмент одиннадцатидюймовых ноутбуков крайне важен, из года в год происходят попытки сделать самое «топовое» устройство с такой диагональю дисплея. Подобные лэптопы VAIO традиционно пользуются спросом не только на американском рынке, но и в нашей стране, насколько мне известно, в удалось продать очень много ноутбуков серии TT. Несмотря на тот факт, что это промежуточная модель, по-моему, TZ была гораздо сбалансированней, это касается производительности, размеров, времени работы, удобства набора. Кто является пользователем одиннадцатидюймовых Sony VAIO? Традиционно это бизнес-аудитория, топ-менеджеры, разного рода фрилансеры, вечные командировочные. И другие господа (и дамы), способные потратить энную сумму денег на миниатюрное устройство с логотипом VAIO. Для имиджа или просто чтобы потрафить себе любимому, сделать подарок.

Исходя из этого факта, по отношению к Sony VAIO X может возникнуть невероятное количество обсуждений на разного рода форумах. считать ли это устройство нетбуком или ноутбуком? А хватит ли производительности для просмотра видео в HD? Почему нет HDMI для подключения к телевизору? Оправдывает ли малый вес невысокую производительность? Почему в Sony не сделали цену на уровне тридцати тысяч? Почему бы за семьдесят тысяч не собрать себе домашний компьютер о четырех ядрах?

Но надо понимать простую вещь: целевая аудитория данного устройства практически не читает форумы и не сможет оценить все приведенные выше высказывания (или воспользоваться ими). В Sony VAIO будет жить вечно, пока будут жить чиновники всех мастей, государственные служащие и другие специальные люди. Несмотря на тот факт, что Президент частенько светится на голубом экране с техникой Apple, под Новый год VAIO сметают для подарков,. старшая. около девяноста тысяч. Предварительный заказ уже начался, продажи начнутся в ноябре. Может показаться, что сумма очень велика. Да, велика. Однако что-то мне подсказывает, что до новогодних праздников Sony VAIO X будет разлетаться, как горячие пирожки. Причины просты: вау-фактор у этого устройства зашкаливает далеко за разумные пределы, и «иксу» можно простить все, что угодно. Включая не самую лучшую производительность.

После прочтения этой главки у многих может возникнуть желание сказать что-то вроде: «А вот есть ноутбук ХХХХ, и он гораздо лучше и производительней и стоит в два раза меньше. ». Не стоит забывать, что живем мы в компаниям на просторах нашей страны удается продавать «понты» в любых видах и формах. Поэтому Sony VAIO X. быть!

Дизайн, конструкция

С чего начать. я даже и не знаю. Ни одна фотография, ни одно видео не смогут передать очарование данного устройства. Весит ноутбук около восьмисот грамм, размеры составляют 185х13,9х278 мм. На фото вы можете видеть толщину в сравнении с Sony VAIO TZ, SE Aino. впечатляющие размеры, впечатляющий вес. Когда ноутбук в сумке, создается ощущение, что ноутбука в сумке нет, все примерно так же, как в случае с Sony VAIO P. Толщина корпуса равномерна, выступающих частей нет, применено множество любопытных инженерных решений, давайте поговорим о них.

• Откидные ножки приподнимают ноутбук над столом, естественно, когда вы используете X на коленях или на кровати, в них нет нужды. Система охлаждения здесь активная, кулер шумит еле слышно, если ноутбук стоит на кровати, то X довольно сильно нагревается и начинает притормаживать. Интересно, что когда вы открываете дисплей, его задняя часть тоже слегка приподнимает ноутбук. еще один способ улучшить вентиляцию. Хитро придумано.
• Обратите внимание на конструкцию разъема Ethernet, он напоминает челюсть. Тоже сделано для того, чтобы толщина корпуса была равномерной. Конструкция надежна, вряд ли отвалится, нужно сильно постараться.
• Крайне интересна конструкция батареи, а особенно интересно сделан аккумулятор повышенной емкости. Ниже. небольшое видео, такой батареи мы еще не видели. Крайне надежное крепление, предусмотрены вентиляционные отверстия, аккумулятор, к тому же, является своеобразной подставкой. Правда, сильно увеличивается вес, весит батарея, по ощущениям, грамм триста-четыреста. Видно, что, памятуя про неважное крепление батареи в некоторых сериях (хотя бы в Z), позаботились о том, чтобы ничего не люфтило. Три защелки, специальные пазы, это правильно.
• Корпус Sony VAIO X сделан по большей части из карбона, упор для рук рядом с клавиатурой алюминиевый. Несмотря на «воздушность» и легкость, ноутбук крайне крепкий, это касается сборки, все элементы отлично подогнаны, никакого люфта, скрипов, зазоров и так далее. Собирают X, так же, как и P, в Японии.
• Что касается покрытия, есть три варианта X. черный с глянцевой крышкой, черный с матовой крышкой, золотой (цвет называется «шампань»). Глянец быстро покрывается отпечатками пальцев, золотой легко поцарапать при неосторожном использовании. Оптимальный вариант и, на мой взгляд, самый красивый. это ноутбук с матовым покрытием. Он выглядит не так «шикарно», как вариант с глянцевой крышкой, но зато гораздо более практичен.
• Световые индикаторы полностью в стиле компании, и здесь была решена небольшая задачка. Световой индикатор кнопки включения виден как с открытой крышкой, так и с закрытой.
• Крышка ноутбука крепится магнитной защелкой, ее (крышку) можно открыть одной рукой, правда, тогда приподнимается нижняя часть. В отличие от некоторых других ноутбуков с тонкой крышкой (у X это пять миллиметров) при открытии она не гнется, но вы можете это сделать специально. Угол раскрытия крышки большой, наверняка сделано для удобства использования на ходу. Скажем, пока вы бредете по офису от одной комнаты к другой. Крепится крышка двумя петлями, люфта нет, ход плавный.
• Надо сделать еще одну ремарку насчет веса. В пресс-релизе фигурировала цифра 655 грамм, однако эта модификация продается только в Великобритании, Франции, Германии, Италии и Испании, здесь установлена самая легкая батарея, нет 3G-модема, емкость SSD 64 Гб. Поставляемые в модификации весят 0,78 кг, это заявленные цифры.
• В комплекте с ноутбуком поставляется зарядное устройство, документация и, насколько я понимаю, это все. Внешний DVD-привод, чехол, мышку можно будет купить отдельно.

Дисплей

Дисплей имеет диагональ 11,1 дюйма, максимальное разрешение. 1366х768 точек, соотношение сторон. 16:9. Есть два положительных момента.

Что тут добавить, работать с X приятно, хорошие углы обзора, вот только черный цвет мне показался недостаточно черным. Даже если вы сидите за столом, а сзади расположен источник света, блики не будут мешать. Набирать текст. сплошное удовольствие. Да и к тому же чистить экран придется не так часто, будь он глянцевым. По сравнению с TZ дисплей X выглядит неплохо. Хотя все-таки цвета кажутся не такими насыщенными.

Для работы (именно для работы) дисплей крайне хорош. Для видео нормален, но не более того.

Клавиатура и тачпад

Традиционная для ноутбуков Sony VAIO клавиатура, клавиши расположены отдельно друг от друга, плюс блок находится в углублении. Говоря «традиционная», я именно это и имею в виду. выверенный ход клавиш, грамотное расположение всех кнопок, и правый Shift, и Enter большие, удобные. Удобно. вот еще одно слово, отлично характеризующее клавиатуру. С помощью Sony VAIO X я написал небольшой двухстраничный текст, вопросов к клавиатуре нет никаких. Вопросы есть к производительности. При использовании для набора Microsoft Office 2007 есть «притормаживания», причем возникают они совершенно неожиданно. В руках была самая «мощная» модификация, так что не совсем понятно, откуда тут задержки. С другой стороны, поставив Mozilla Firefox и набирая текст в Google Docs, никаких задержек, притормаживаний не обнаружил, все очень быстро.

Тачпад в этом ноутбуке поддерживает технологию Multi-touch, двумя пальцами можно «раздвигать» изображения, увеличивать масштаб в браузере, горизонтальными движениями. прокручивать объекты. Да вот только сам тачпад очень маленький, кнопочки неудобные, ровным счетом ничего общего с ноутбуками компании Apple. Соответственно, для комфортной работы с VAIO X наличие мышки обязательно.

Производительность и конфигурации

Ну что ж, вот мы и дошли до самой противоречивой части данного устройства. Как вам уже известно, оно построено на базе Intel Atom, в младшей версии используется процессор Z540 (1,86 ГГц), в старшей. Z550 (2 ГГц). Предустановлена операционная система Windows 7, остальные характеристики вы можете посмотреть в таблице ниже.

Немного про оснащение: есть два USB-порта, мини-джек, слоты для карт памяти Memory Stick и SD, разъем для кабеля Ethernet, VGA. Здесь нет HDMI, здесь нет разъема для микрофона, зато есть Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, обе модификации оснащаются 3G-модемами. С картой МТС никаких проблем не возникло, настройки просты, работа ровная, если говорить про МТС, то и со скоростью все в порядке.

Теперь немного про ОС и скорость работы. Система загружается почти за две минуты, из спящего режима выходит за четыре-пять секунд, это хорошо. Оперативной памяти добавить вряд ли получится, если только в сервис-центре (и то, это лишь догадки). Поскольку используется SSD, можно не выключать VAIO X, для того чтобы в сумке донести до машины и уехать по делам, на месте достать, открыть и продолжить работу.

Фильмы размером 1,37 Гб (типичные «авишки», наверняка и у вас их полно) ноутбук воспроизводит вполне нормально. Но вот как только вы возьметесь регулировать громкость, появляются задержки в работе. С фильмами в высоком разрешении не получается ничего, но и не выглядит ли дурью просмотр таких вещей на таком ноутбуке? Знаю, знаю, что вы мне скажете: «Ну так за что тогда платить?» Тут я могу лишь порекомендовать перечитать главку про позиционирование.

При работе с ноутбуком обязательно нужно провести чистку, убрать к черту предустановленный антивирус, изрядно тормозящий все процессы, установить Mozilla Firefox или Opera, поставить кодек для просмотра видео, поставить Picasa или другой фотобраузер. Да, Windows 7 стала гораздо удобней, чем Vista. Но, думаю, владельцу все равно придется либо самому слегка «допилить» систему, либо попросить об этом своего ассистента.

Производительность при всем желании нельзя назвать высокой, она сносная для работы с документами, Интернетом, «аськами», Skype и другими дежурными задачами.

Время работы

Этот параметр критичен для миниатюрных ноутбуков. Играйте, фанфары, в Sony уделили массу внимания автономной работе, но хочу сказать про один момент, выясненный в ходе обсуждения новинки в моем блоге.

Итак, для Sony VAIO X существует три типа батарей, кроме того, существуют отличия по завяленному времени работы для США и Европы. В таблице вы можете посмотреть, как это выглядит.

Первая батарея самая легкая и тонкая, вторая весит побольше, но и работает дольше, ну а третья. это тот самый аккумулятор-подставка. К сожалению, мне так и не удалось понять, какая именно батарея была во взятом экземпляре. После полной зарядки система показала цифры в три часа тридцать минут. Выкрученная на полную яркость подсветка, включенные Wi-Fi, Bluetooth. Снизил подсветку на пару делений, это своеобразный порог комфортной работы, когда и не тускло, и не слишком ярко. Через пять минут система рапортовала о пяти с половиной часах автономной работы. Хорошо, снова увеличиваем яркость, данные изменяются. 4 часа 43 минуты. В эти игры можно играть до бесконечности, и я решил просто посмотреть кино. В сбалансированном режиме с помощью Sony VAIO X удалось посмотреть обе серии Kill Bill, и, по показаниям системы, заряда аккумулятора хватило бы еще на двадцать минут работы. Очень интересно, особенно если это самая легкая батарея.

Ну а теперь о самом главном: с какими батареями ноутбук будут поставлять в Итак, «наши» Sony VAIO X будет оснащаться батареями второго типа, это означает время работы почти в течение рабочего дня, можно будет купить отдельно батарею третьего типа, я думаю, время работы с ней способно очень сильно порадовать.

Однако для США набор более сбалансированный, это легкая батарея первого типа и третьего. Как мне кажется, это более удобно: когда нужна легкость, берем менее емкую батарею, когда предстоит долгий перелет. прикручиваем подставку.

Блок питания маленький, интересно, что для X подходит ЗУ от Sony VAIO P, правда, я бы не советовал вам использовать такой. Кто его знает, чем это чревато. К сожалению, в Sony не довели до ума конструкцию блока питания, вернее, тут сохраняется проблема с чрезмерной длиной кабеля. Его ну очень много. Время полной зарядки. около трех часов. Сколько будет заряжаться ноутбук с батареей-подставкой. остается только гадать.

Сейчас, заканчивая обзор, после полной зарядки посмотрел оставшееся время работы, система показала 47 часов 35 минут. Эх, ну когда уже ноутбуки смогут столько работать? Проверил еще раз. 4 часа 58 минут, сбалансированный режим, яркость на полную, Wi-Fi включен. Непонятная батарея. Но, в любом случае, это далеко не P, не TT и даже не TZ. серия X работает долго. И это хорошо.

Звук

Динамик здесь, сами понимаете, далеко не X-bass, так что для просмотра фильма, прослушивании музыки очень нужны наушники. Или же придется подключать ноутбук к музыкальной системе. Ну, по другому и быть не могло, с такой то толщиной корпуса.

Хотите мощней?

Поделюсь небольшой инсайдерской информацией, можно ее отнести к моим очередным догадкам. Дело в том, что некоторым может понравиться размер этого ноутбука, но вот производительность не устроит. Что ж, в Sony не дремлют, скорее всего, в 2010-ом году мы увидим продолжение серии Z, в относительно тонком корпусе будет скрыт мощный процессор. Понятно, речь идет о тринадцатидюймовом ноутбуке (продолжение отличной серии Z). Что касается Sony VAIO X, то дальнейшие модификации, скорее всего, будут отличаться цветом корпуса, емкостью SSD, аксессуарами в комплекте. Но вряд ли появятся версии на базе других процессоров.

Надеюсь, что в скором времени ноутбук попадет ко мне в руки для более детального ознакомления, пока могу сделать такие выводы. У Sony получилось сделать очередной VAIO с завораживающим внешним видом. Вы смотрите на него, умом понимаете, что вам это не нужно, что здесь не самый мощный процессор, что тачпад выглядит смешно, что. В общем, пока вы все это думаете, рука тянется к кредитной карте. Я знаю двух самых закостенелых «не любителей» VAIO, так даже они оценили проделанную компанией работу. Относиться к Sony VAIO X можно по-разному, но нельзя не отдать должное мастерству японских инженеров. Великолепный тонкий корпус, матовый дисплей, хорошая клавиатура, долгое время работы и сверхдолгая работа с необычной батареей увеличенной емкости.

Это замечательный одиннадцатидюймовый ноутбук. Возможно, лучший из всех миниатюрных компьютеров, сделанных Sony на данный момент.

Что касается цены. Давайте немного подождем, и я вам смогу рассказать, оправдаются ли мои прогнозы насчет продаж Sony VAIO X. Ставлю на то, что до конца 2009-го года куш получится сорвать.

Sony Vaio M Review – solid mini laptop with a big name

Sony’s Vaio is a notorious laptops brand, one of the most known in the world.

Also, Vaios have a reputation as premium notebooks, with fancy design, solid build, good features and performances. But all these do come with appropriate price tags.

In these last days, I had the chance to play with the Sony Vaio M, their most affordable device on the market. We’re talking about a 10 inch netbook, and while the device was available on the market for quite a while, I only managed to get my hands on it right now.

I do have to say I’ve played with the other 10 inch Vaio on the market, the W series, but only for a limited time.

The M however was my everyday mini laptop in the last couple of days, so I managed to get to know quite well its good and bad points. We’re going to talk about those in the next rows.

But first, let’s take a look at the specs:

• 10.1 inch 1024 x 600 px non-glare display
• Atom N470 1.83 GHz processor GMA 3150 graphics
• 1 GB DDR2 memory
• 250 GB HDD
• Wi-Fi N, no Bluetooth
• 4 Cell 40Wh battery
• Card-reader, 3 x USB 2.0 slots, 2.0 MPx webcam, stereo speakers
• Windows 7 Starter

Of course, specs are pretty much the same as on all 10 inch netbooks on the market. But, like I always say, there is more about a laptop than just specs. So read the next lines to see if this Sony Vaio M is actually any good.

Design and Construction

Unlike most Vaios, the M is not impressive in terms of design. It looks good, but there’s nothing out of ordinary with it.

However, in terms of materials, build quality and attention to details, the M is a true Vaio. Casing is made of plastic, a nice matte high quality plastic, available in a couple of different color options (tested version comes in Black and Graphite). And not just the lid cover is matte, but also the palm rest and areas around the keyboard and screen. So, in terms of casing, the Vaio M is solid and excellent built, one of the best in its 10 inch class.

You probably noticed a couple of not that great things, like:

• All the 3 USB ports are on the right side, so that part can get cluttered with cables. Still, they are properly spaced, so you you’d be able to use all three of them simultaneously if needed
• LAN port is placed towards the bottom part on the left side, so if you plan to use it, the LAN cable will be in your way there
• Headset port is on the front, which is once again a problem when using the computer in bed or on the couch, when that particular part of the netbook leans on your belly and you will not be able to actually use headsets

All in all, ports layout is not that ergonomic. And although that is not really a problem and you could get used to it, I was expecting better from a Vaio.

Keyboard and Trackpad

Opening the lid, you’ll find a standard flat keyboard, 93% of Full-Size. That makes the M the only Vaio without a chiclet keyboard in the last years. However, that’s not a bad thing, as the keyboard on this M is actually one of the best you can get on a 10 incher right now.

Can’t say it’s better than the one on the W, as it is slightly different, but I for sure cannot complain about it. Keys are decently spaced, there’s almost no flex and they are decently quiet. Plus, you get proper sized SHIFT, CTRL and ENTER keys, although the F keys on the upper part are kind of cramped. Writing this review on it was a true pleasure.

I do have to complain on the placement of this keyboard. Take a look at the picture below. As you can see, there’s a lot of space on its upper part (speakers are placed there). However, this leads to less space bellow, thus a narrow palm rest area and cramped trackpad.

And indeed, the trackpad in small, one of the most cramped on the market. However, it feels OK, but it comes with blind areas on its margins and it is sometimes imprecise. Luckily, you do get independent right/left click buttons, but they are stiff and you will have to press hard in order for them to work. So overall, trackpad is quite poor on the M, and although I’ve seen worse, I’ve definitely seen a lot better also.

Display

On a first look, the 10.1 inch 1024 x 768 display on this Vaio is similar to what you find on other such netbooks. Using it you’ll see that it’s not.

First of all, this is a matte non-glare screen, so you can use it outside or in strong light conditions for more than viewing yourself in it, like on glossy ones. And second, brightness and viewing angles are better on this Sony than on other netbooks I’ve tested, including the ones from Asus, Acer or Toshiba.

However, I don’t like that the screen only tilts back to around 130 degrees, thus using it while laying on the couch, like I do right know when writing this review, is kind of a problem. If you could tilt it back to 170-180 degrees, that would have been a lot better.

Screen is actually very good for a 10 incher

Performances

I’m not going to FOCUS on performances too much. Although this Vaio M boosts the N470 processor, slightly faster than the standard N450 found on 10 inchers, in terms of performances it’s pretty much the same as all its competitors.

So, as long as you know what to expect, the M will not disappoint. It can handle everyday applications, like browsing, chatting, text and light photo editing, listening to music, watching movies (even 720p content). However, games, Full HD content or resources hungry applications are not a match for this machine. But that’s OK, it wasn’t built for them anyway.

Software

Like Many other producers, the guys at Sony load their devices with a lot of crappy uneeded software. That might not be a problem on more powerful machines, but it definitely is on a light netbook built on Atom.

Thus, I do recommend running Decrapifier and getting rid of all the unwanted programs. Or even better, get a fresh Windows on it. You’ll really get you M snappier this way.

Of course, not all the Aps preinstalled are useless, some are actually good, like Vaio Care for instance.

Battery Life

I will insist more on battery and autonomy, as this is an important criteria when choosing a netbook. And unfortunately, this is in fact Achilles’ heel for this Vaio M. Sony only equipped it with a 4 Cell battery and this translates in up to 4 hours of life in everyday action, and even less when watching clips or listening to music. details bellow:

• 4 hours 15 minutes when writing this review, with Wi-Fi OFF, Balanced Profile selected, Screen brightness set to 50% and only running Microsft Word
• Around 3 hours 15 minutes in everyday usage, browsing on different sites, watching some YouTube clips with sound ON and chatting on Skype, with Wi-Fi ON, Balanced Mode, Screen set to 50%
• Nearly 3 hours for looping a regular DivX movie using speakers set to maximum volume, with Wi-Fi OFF and screen to 80%

So all in all, in everyday use, you will get around 3 hours of life on this Vaio M. And when faced with competition, capable of real life 8-10 hours on a single charge, the Vaio M fails; and it does it badly.

Speakers, Webcam, Noise and others

I was particularly impressed with the speakers on this machine. They are not very loud, but sound quality is good. And unlike on most other such laptops, they are facing upwards and towards the user, being placed above the keyboard.

You get a 2.0 MPx webcam, better than the competition has to offer. Works great with Skype and other such chatting programs and it is even capable of decent low-light performances.

And I do have to mention one disturbing problem for this Sony. The bottom part gets very hot just beneath the X-C keys. So hot that it will bother you when using it in your lap. And of course, the more aps your run, the hotter it gets. And the hotter it gets, the noisier it gets also. In fact, CPU’s fan is active most of the time and while running a clip it will get quite loud and bothering.

and availability

Like I’ve said above, the M is the most affordable Vaio series right now on the market. It goes for around 399 in the US which is actually a good price. However, in this price range, it competes with the top 10 inch devices from Asus, Toshiba and HP, which are even slightly cheaper. And they are better, at least in terms of battery life, but not just…

As you can see, this netbook is 50 bucks cheaper than the other Vaio 10 inch netbook, the W series, which goes for around 449. But that comes with slightly better battery, chiclet keyboard and HD screen…

Good price vor a Vaio, but still quite expensive

Pros and cons

In the end, let’s take another quick look at the good parts:

• Solid built, good quality materials and attention to details
• Available in a couple of different colors
• Good featues and performances
• Ergonomic and comfortable keyboard
• Non-glare screen with good brightness and viewing angles
• Good speakers, facing upwards
• 2 MPx webcam
• Decently priced for a Vaio laptop
• Battery life is poor for a 10 incher (only up to 4 hours in real life use)
• Ports layout is not that ergonomic
• Trackpad is cramped, kind of imprecise and the click buttons are stiff
• Computer gets hot on its bottom and quite noisy
• Expensive for a netbook, based on what it has to offer

Conclusions

All in all, the Vaio M is definitely a solid mini laptop. Completely matte and pretty sturdy, it is a good device to carry around. Performances are good, the keyboard is top notch and the screen is one of the best in its class.

However, the M has problems, and while I could live with the cramped trackpad, hot bottom, noisy fan and weird ports layout, I definitely cannot with only 3-4 hours of life, not in late 2010. And definitely not for 400 bucks.

So, does that mean the Vaio M is not a good 10 inch netbook? Not, not at all, if you want a cheap Vaio or a cheap premium mini laptop, this is a decent pick. It is also excellent if you plan to do a lot of writing on it.

The old cliché states that good things come in small packages, which means that chicken nuggets, dead hedgehogs and Peter Andre’s head are all apparently ‘good things’. However, we have to agree with this logic when it’s applied to Sony’s latest VAIO Z Series ultra-portable laptop, the Sony VAIO VPC-Z21V9E.

Despite being cursed by a name that’s less catchy than an N-Dubz tune, this is an excellent little 13.1-inch PC laptop that we’d happily use as our everyday computer.

That is, if we happened to have a spare couple of grand knocking around, priced as it is at £2,699.

We’ve seen a lot of ultra-portables lately, from the sleek and sexy Samsung 900XSA to the business-oriented Lenovo ThinkPad X1. It’s impressive how much power you can now cram into a tiny frame, ably demonstrated by the new Apple MacBook Air 2011, which squeezes Intel’s Sandy Bridge technology into something as thin as your finger.

The 13.1-inch Sony VAIO VPC-Z21V9E also manages this feat. It’s a little chunkier than the Apple MacBook Air 2011 and Samsung 9 Series, but at 20mm it’s still a slender machine. Best of all, it weighs just 1.18kg – less than most netbooks we’ve used.

Sony has stuck with its traditional all-black design, which is a shame. We definitely prefer the brushed chrome body of the Samsung 900XSA, and the glossy white design of the Apple MacBook Air. The carbon fibre build is solid at least, although the lid does feel rather fragile, a problem we’ve noticed with a few VAIOs lately. We wouldn’t recommend placing anything on top of the VAIO VPC-Z21V9E, just in case.

We initially had mixed feelings over the keyboard, which has the shallowest travel we’ve ever experienced. When the keys are hit they barely move, akin to typing on a virtual keyboard on a tablet. However, we were used to it after just a few minutes. The board is tilted slightly when the lid is lifted, as the rear is pushed upwards. This makes typing comfortable, even over prolonged periods.

Each key protrudes through its own hole cut in the chassis, isolation-style. The distance between keys makes it easier to touch type, but there are no open gaps for crumbs to infiltrate the VAIO Z Series laptop’s precious innards. A subtle backlighting effect makes the keys glow in the dark, so you can bash out that novel at 3am when inspiration strikes without having to turn on the lights.

Despite the compact body, the keys are generally well sized. Even the arrow keys (often the first casualties) haven’t suffered, although the Shift keys are rather thin. This didn’t bother us too much, because we have tiny girl fingers anyway.

However, the VAIO VPC-Z21V9E’s touchpad is cramped, meaning you’ll be lifting your finger often when sweeping the cursor across the screen. We like the textured surface, and the mouse buttons are firm.

Above the keyboard, you’ll find a wireless networking on/off switch, as well as the usual Assist, VAIO and Web shortcut buttons. These allow you to surf the web, diagnose issues and fiddle with power settings in an instant.

The engineers specifically tested this rendition of the VAIO S to high end impact, stress, and pressure tests to make sure the unit is able to withstand the average mishaps, slips, and falls.

VAIO laptops specifically aren’t designed with gaming in mind. This line of portable computer is aimed squarely at business, office, and school usage.

That being said, you can still get some casual gaming done, so long as you pick the right model. Finding that model isn’t hard, as you can start with a familiar device we’ve already listed and tweak its specs!

The VAIO S we listed up at the top of this article comes in multiple configurations. If you want to play games, this edition is absolutely the model to pick.

The 8th gen i7 processor handles integrated graphics much more smoothly than older models. With 16GB of RAM, you will more than meet the minimum requirements for most games.

Those two specs aside, the big draw here is the size of the solid state drive. With a 1TB SSD, you won’t run out of room installing anything in your Steam library.

Unfortunately, the biggest downside is that you can’t get a VAIO model with a dedicated graphics card. That means you will be able to get games to run, but you won’t get steady frame rates at high graphics settings.

Be sure to note that battery life listed above is estimated for word processing or video streaming, not gaming. When playing Fortnite you are going to get a much lower battery life before having to recharge.

Based on your requirements, it sounds like you don’t need a dedicated graphics card or a touch screen (although if you want that latter feature, there are still options). For durability, you probably want a clamshell laptop rather than a hybrid. For having multiple docs and tabs open at the same time, your main FOCUS should be the RAM, while for Photoshop you want a decent CPU. Since you mentioned using cables for stability, I’m betting you want an Ethernet port for a wired connection. Assuming my Kroner to dollars and centimeters to inches calculations are correct, your top of the line option would be 14 inch Lenovo ThinkPad T480 If you don’t want to spend the full 10,000 Kr, another solid option that should meet your needs but at a lower price is the 2018 Flagship HP Ecipse Business notebook. I ordered the VAIO S13, [VJS132X0311S] 16GB RAM, Storage 1TB PCIe SSD,CPU, Intel Core i7-8550U, Operating System Windows 10 Pro a year and a half ago for 1,799.00. My first system was a Sony VAIO Desktop in the ’90s and I’ve had five Sony VAIOs over the years. There is a lot to love about this brand, even now that Sony is not making the VAIO. It is my understanding that Sony engineers actually migrated to the new company that produces the VAIO. So much to love about this system–sadly it takes a single flaw to completely ruin it. Others have written about the poor engineering that resulted in the power cord fitting too loosely into the jack. This is not an aberration, it is the way every single one of these units is built. The power cord just keeps falling out. Perhaps from being constantly disconnected and connected, it stopped working altoge.ther after a year. I ordered a new cord (they are not easy to find) and it worked, but still falls out every five minutes. When you spend two grand for a system, you should not have to deal with this, and resort to literally holding the system together with rubber bands. DON’T BUY THIS SYSTEM until you know they’ve fixed this flaw Reply
