Wacom vs iPad: Which Should I Buy as an Illustrator?

Friends entering into the world of digital illustration for the first time often ask if they should first make the investment into a Wacom drawing tablet or an iPad.

It’s not a a black and white answer and strongly depends on your budget, how serious you are about illustration and what your illustration style is.

There are three iPads to consider buying for illustration. The basic iPad (329), the iPad Pro 11” (799) or the iPad Pro 12.9” (999).

The basic iPad works with the first generation Apple Pencil (99) and the iPad Pros work with the second generation Apple Pencil (129).

iPad (329) Apple Pencil (99)

If you are a very beginner with digital illustration and you have a limited budget the iPad is a great choice.

iPad Pros (799) Apple Pencil 2nd Gen(129)

If you are a more advanced illustrator with a bigger budget than go for the iPad Pro for sure. While both use the Procreate app, the Pros allow for larger resolution drawings and more layers because of their faster processors. The Apple Pencil 2nd Gen with the iPad Pro is also more precise, although the regular Apple pencil and iPad is still very good. The iPad Pros also have bigger screens.

Pros over Wacom

Procreate: This is considered the best drawing app for iPad. I have tried the Adobe versions and they just aren’t as user friendly. You can also find classes, tutorials, and special add ons like brushes from teachers all over the internet to make Procreate even better.

Portability: The iPad for sure is much easier for on the go drawing and you don’t need to attach it to a computer to use.

Multi-use: The iPads can also be used for other things outside of drawing, the Pros even make pretty good computer replacements.

Cons

Price: iPads, especially the Pros are much more expensive, and the Apple Pencils are sold separately adding to the cost.

Adobe Illustrator: I am a vector illustrator who relies heavily on Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop which aren’t as good as iPad apps. Procreate is definitely more for illustration that imitates more traditional paint/pencil styles.

Limited Resolution: Since you’re not connected to a computer you are limited in size and scale of your pieces.

Note: Since this was written Apple has announced the new iPad Air that starts at 599. I do not cover the Air as the price point and power seem to sit between the iPad and iPad Pro. I recommend just spending a little bit more on the Pro or saving the money and just going with the regular iPad.

Wacom Intuos Pro (249. 379)

I’m comparing the Wacom Intuos Pro tablet against the iPads. I don’t think the cheaper Wacom series tablets are worth buying if you are even a little bit serious about illustration. And the full on digital Wacom tablets are for professional illustrators who are probably not comparing devices.

I use the Medium size (379) with my 27” inch computer and 15” MacBook Pro. You could probably get away with the smaller size tablet (249) if you just have a laptop.

Pros over iPad

Resolution/File size: There are no layer or resolution size limits.

Price: Much cheaper than an iPad and the pen is included.

Vector Illustration: The Wacom is much better using apps like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator for vector illustration. If you are reliant on the Pen tool this is a much better option.

Cons

Not as Portable: The Wacom must be attached to a computer and used on a flat table. No drawing on the couch.

No Procreate: Cannot use the Procreate app.

Different Feel: Using a Wacom is more like using an extremely accurate and user-friendly mouse to draw. You are not drawing directly on the screen.

Single purpose: This is purely meant for drawing, unlike the iPad which can be used for games, streaming, etc.

So which one should you get?

I personally have both but use them for different things. If I had to choose just one I would pick my Wacom because of my illustration style. The iPad for me is more a “fun” thing to have. Sometimes I use it to sketch ideas but my final illustrations are always done with my Wacom and computer.

If you are a beginner illustrator: iPad

If you don’t have a computer: iPad or iPad Pros

If you are a vector illustrator: Wacom Intuos Pro

If you are a more paint/pencil traditional illustrator: iPad Pros

If you are on a budget: iPad or Wacom Intuos Pro

If you have no budget: Get both!

Final tip: If you end up deciding to go with an iPad…

I recommend getting a matte screen protector. It helps give the screen a little bit of pull when you are drawing on the screen that feels more like real paper. Paperlike is widely considered the best brand but it’s expensive and I’ve found using a cheaper one like this one from Amazon works just as well.
