There are two ways in which Apple supports iPhones. One is the software – ensuring that any bugs and security flaws are addressed. The other is the hardware – providing the parts and labor to fix a problem with your phone (for a price, of course).

It’s for this reason that we dissuade people from buying particularly old iPhone handsets. The risk that a fault could occur or that you might be exposed to security risks is too high.

The good news is that Apple does at least support iPhones for a long time. Software support lasts around a decade, while hardware support can be available on five to seven-year-old handsets

Read on to find out which iPhones are supported with the latest operating systems, and which are supported for servicing and repairs.

How long does Apple support iOS?

As of 2023, Apple supports the last two versions of its operating systems for bug and security updates: iOS 16 and iOS 15. All phones that could run iOS 14 and iOS 13 are able to run iOS 15, so that means all phones from iPhone 6s forwards are supported.

But actually, Apple does support iOS 12 as well, which brings software support to the iPhones 6 and 5s. In January 2023 Apple updated iOS 12 with a security update to address serious security flaws. However, we do not expect these phones to be supported for much longer.

Once iOS 17 launches in late 2023 we anticipate that Apple will stop supporting iOS 12, only maintaining support for iOS 17, iOS 16 and iOS 15. At that point, if you are still using an iPhone 5s or iPhone 6, it will be time to upgrade.

Statista (a provider of market and consumer data) publishes a chart that shows how long Apple supports older iPhones. The company updated this chart in June 2023, adding iOS 17.

The graph shows for how long the software on iPhones has been supported by Apple, and the good news is that support for the operating systems on older iPhones – including security and usability updates – has continued for years after these phones were sold, especially among the newer iPhones.

For the early phones the support wasn’t anything to shout about, but as of the iPhone 4s, which arrived in 2011, Apple’s support has lasted for years (and still continues).

The first iPhone, which launched in 2007, was able to run iPhone OS 3, which was supported by Apple up until 2010. The iPhone is considered obsolete by Apple.

The iPhone 3G, which launched in 2008, was able to run iOS 4.0, which was itself supported until 2011. The iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS are considered obsolete by Apple.

The length of support increased with the launch of the iPhone 4s in 2011. That phone was able to run operating systems all the way up to iOS 9. Apple was still supporting iOS 9 in 2019 when it issued a GPS related update that July. The iPhones 4 and 4s are considered obsolete by Apple.

The iPhone 5c runs iOS 10, which also received the GPS related update in July 2019. The iPhones 5 and 5c are considered obsolete by Apple.

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 both run iOS 12, for which Apple issued a security update in January 2023. This update was issued for those few devices that don’t support iOS 15. We don’t expect that Apple will continue support for iOS 12 for much longer. These phones are considered vintage by Apple.

iOS 15, which arrived in September 2021, supports all iPhones from iPhone 6s onwards, just as with iOS 14 and iOS 13. Both iOS 14 and 13 are considered obsolete by Apple because the same phones can run iOS 15. The iPhone 6s is considered vintage by Apple.

iOS 16, which arrived in September 2022 runs on all iPhones from the iPhone 8 onwards – but do note that not all features are available on the older handsets.

iOS 17 will arrive in the fall 2023 and when it does it will run on all iPhones from the iPhone XS onwards – meaning the iPhone X and iPhone 8 will be stuck with iOS 16.

What is the oldest iPhone still supported?

Currently, the oldest iPhone that is supported by Apple is the iPhone 5s, but the support for that iPhone and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will likely end when iOS 17 arrives.

We would advise that if you have an iPhone 6 or older and are concerned about security it is time to update your iPhone because it is likely that no more security updates will be issued by Apple after iOS 17 arrives, meaning that the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 will not be supported by Apple and the oldest iPhone to be supported will be the iPhone 6S and the original iPhone SE.

When does Apple stop supporting iPhones?

In terms of software that’s not a bad showing, but if you have a fault with your iPhone will Apple be able to provide the parts to fix it with?

Apple will support iPhones (and all devices it makes) for seven years from the last time it sold that particular model. So as long as your iPhone was still being sold by Apple up to seven years ago the company will still service it – in other words: help you fix it (for a price).

This is where Apple list of obsolete and vintage products comes in.

Apple states on its website here that “Owners of iPhone, iPad, iPod or Mac products may obtain a service and parts from Apple or Apple service providers for five years after the product is no longer sold.”

The following iPhones are considered Obsolete, which means sales were discontinued more than seven years ago and Apple has now discontinued all hardware servicing.

• iPhone 3GS
• iPhone 4 (certain models are now obsolete)
• iPhone 4s
• iPhone 5c (discontinued September 2013, obsolete in 2021)

And these iPhones are listed as Vintage, which means they not been sold for more than five years (but less than seven years). Apple will still service these products.

• iPhone 4 8GB (discontinued in 2013, but sold in India until February 2014, likely to be obsolete very soon)
• iPhone 5 (discontinued September 2013, likely to become obsolete soon)
• iPhone 5S (discontinued in 2016, vintage in 2021)
• iPhone 6 (discontinued in 2016, vintage in 2021)
• iPhone 6 Plus (discontinued in 2016, vintage in 2021)

Apple will only service iPhones older than the iPhone 6s if it has the required parts. A ll iPhones that followed those handsets should be supported by Apple.

This suggests that while the iPhone 6s may get software support for a while yet, it may not be possible to mend it if it gets broken.

iPhone 15 release — which iPhones will Apple discontinue?

The arrival of the iPhone 15 this fall will mean a chance to get familiar with Apple’s latest handset. But it’s also a time to bid farewell to some current models, which will likely drop out of Apple’s iPhone lineup to make way for the new models.

The iPhone 15 release date is still months away at this point, so we have no special insight into Apple’s plans. But the company does stick to a few tried and true approaches to filling out its phone lineup, giving us a pretty good ideal of what iPhones will still be around come September and which ones will be put out to pasture.

And that’s important to know ahead of time. While Apple is certain to drop some older phones to make room for the iPhone 15 models, some more current devices are likely on the chopping block, too — including some of the best iPhones you can buy right now. If you’re considering whether to get one of those models now may be the time to act, particularly if you can lower the price even further through an iPhone 14 deal.

Below, you’ll find our best guesses for what the iPhone lineup will look like this fall after the iPhone 15 arrives. That includes the current models we think Apple plans to drop later this year.

Apple’s current iPhone lineup

As a reminder, here’s what the current lineup of iPhones looks like. Note that this reflects the phones available directly from Apple — you may find other models on sale at wireless carriers and retailers.

So Apple currently sells eight different iPhone models — four that came out last fall with the iPhone 14 release, plus another 2022 model in the form of the iPhone SE. The iPhone 13 models came out in 2021, while the iPhone 12 will be celebrating its third birthday in the fall.

iPhone 15: What models are coming this fall

Initial iPhone 15 rumors predicted a new model joining the iPhone lineup this year — an iPhone 15 Ultra that would supposedly offer even more premium features than Apple’s Pro models. Subsequent reports contend that while an Ultra device is under consideration at Apple, it won’t arrive until 2024 at the earliest.

That leaves us with four likely iPhone 15 models — and they’re the usual suspects from recent Apple iPhone launches.

It’s all but certain we’re going to see a 6.1-inch iPhone 15 model that’s the entry-level flagship in Apple’s lineup. We’re also hearing a lot of iPhone 15 Pro rumors, with a 6.1-inch Pro model and a 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max very much in Apple’s plans. As with the iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro models figure to get the most premium features to distinguish themselves from Apple’s regular phones. That leaves a fourth slot in the iPhone 15 lineup that will likely be filled by an iPhone 15 Plus. With iPhone 14 Plus sales reportedly lower than other models, there had been some speculation Apple might drop its other 6.7-inch device. But recent reports include a Plus model in the iPhone 15 lineup, so it sounds like Apple’s keeping that option for at least another year.

Which current iPhones could disappear from Apple’s lineup?

With four new iPhones arriving in the fall, Apple will have to do some trimming if it decides to keep its lineup at or around its current size. So which models are on the chopping block?

Start with the most obvious drop — we can’t remember the last time Apple kept a three-year-old iPhone around, so September will likely mean the end of the road for the iPhone 12. Its position as an older discounted model will likely be filled by the iPhone 13, which we imagine Apple would keep around but at a lower price than before.

Two other likely goners include the iPhone 14 Pro models. That’s no reflection on quality, as the iPhone 14 Pro Max in particular ranks highly on our list of best phones. Rather, it’s an acknowledgement that Apple usually drops its Pro models after one year of sales — a practice likely to continue even though this year’s Pros are rumored to be Apple’s top sellers, thanks to all their features.

We’d imagine the standard iPhone 14 to stay around, though Apple will likely drop the price by 100. That’s typically what happens to the base model iPhone every year, making the iPhone 14 a prime candidate to remain as Apple’s 699 option.

That leaves us with the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 13 mini, with the fate of either phone anyone’s guess. We’d imagine the iPhone 13 mini is likely to be eliminated from the lineup — reports claim the mini phones haven’t sold particularly well over the years, and the iPhone 12 mini was dropped two years after its initial release.

The only reason Apple might keep the iPhone 13 mini around longer is that it would give the company a 499 option, assuming the usual 100 price cut, and it would serve as an option for the handful of small phone fans. Otherwise, though, there’s no reason to expect the iPhone 13 mini holds out for another year.

The iPhone 14 Plus’ fate is harder to determine, as this is the first time Apple’s offered such a phone. However, with an iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max coming in the fall, a third 6.7-inch phone seems superfluous. Plus, a 100 price cut to the iPhone 14 Plus would put it at the same likely starting price as the iPhone 15. Apple can eliminate a lot of confusion just by dropping the iPhone 14 Plus.

Fall iPhone lineup outlook

All of these comings and goings leaves us with just seven iPhones on sale through Apple this fall — four new iPhone 15 models joined by the iPhone SE and the discounted iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 offerings.

As a reminder, that’s all guesswork — Apple could surprise us by keeping extra iPhones around. And our likely iPhone lineup assumes the new iPhones will cost the same as their predecessors. If the iPhone 15 Pro models go up in price, for example, it’s easier to imagine Apple keeping around an iPhone 14 Pro as a discounted option.

Until we hear more concrete rumors about iPhone 15 pricing, though, we’re pretty confident that Apple’s fall iPhone reshuffle will feature the usual additions and subtractions. Stay tuned to see if we’re right.

Currently, there is no talk about what will happen with the other Apple products, but it seems like it is only a matter of time before they go the same way as the iPhone is rumored to go.

On the other hand, Apple will want to keep their finger in the desktop and laptop pie, and their Mac computers are not only some of the most loved, but will not need a big overhaul anytime soon.

Augmented Virtual Reality

Extended reality, including augmented and virtual reality, is the alleged reason why Apple wants to stop the production of its iPhone line. While the tech has been around for a few years now, it is only getting better and will quickly reach the point where it will be part of our everyday lives.

Apple wants to take advantage of this tech and make the Apple Glass, an augmented and virtual reality pair of glasses that will replace your phone and transform the world around you.

The details are still scarce, in typical Apple fashion. But it is expected that the Apple Glass will be a pair of glasses that connect to Airpods to allow you to make and listen to calls and render the world around you interactive.

There have been examples of this before, but the technology hasn’t quite been able to keep up with what the company wants it to do. However, that is sure to change over the next few years, and this is what Apple is likely to be banking on.

Will the Changes be Successful?

There is always the question of whether or not significant changes to an established and essential piece of tech will work. People like the iPhone; they like how it looks, works, and feels in their hands. Getting rid of all of that will be a big step.

Apple deciding to scrap something that has been part of millions of people’s lives for over ten years is a move that you might not think will work. However, you may be forgetting about the Apple ecosystem and the fact that Apple has a way to make their products needed.

Should You Still Buy an iPhone?

Finally, you may want to know if you should or will still be able to buy an iPhone. Sellers and resellers will almost certainly start to stock up on iOS devices in the coming years.

There is obviously no talk yet about whether the iPhone will still be supported software-wise, which is different from its being discontinued. Even though you may be able to buy iPhones if the product lineup is killed, this question of support is the big one.
