Is The Expansion Pass (DLC) Worth It? | Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BotW)

The Expansion Pass for Breath of the Wild comes with additional content to make your adventure in Hyrule more fun! Learn more about the contents of both DLC packs, how to buy them, and whether or not the Expansion Pass is worth buying!

How to Buy the Expansion Pass

Purchase for 19.99 on the eShop

The Expansion Pass for Breath of the Wild is available to purchase on the Nintendo eShop and in the following retailers below for the price of 19.99. Both DLC Packs 1 and 2 are included in the Expansion Pass and they cannot be purchased separately.

The Master Trials DLC Pack

The first Expansion Pass for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild brings several new features to the BotW, with arguably some of the most important additions to the game: Trial of the Sword and Master Mode.

Trial of the Sword

The Trial of the Sword is an arena style section composed of several levels, and completing them all will grant the Master Sword additional power. Similar to the Savage Labyrinth or Cave of Ordeals, which is a multi-layer challenges filled with hordes of enemies, the Trials are very difficult. It will test the skill of any Hero looking to restore the Master Sword to its glory.

How to Unlock Master Mode

Master Mode is one of the main reasons that the Expansion is worth getting. Master Mode adds both extra difficulty and replayability to Breath of the Wild. Master Mode is first unlocked by completing the game normally, after which, Master Mode can be selected from the main menu.

What Changes in Master Mode

First, all enemies will be one level higher than they were in Normal mode. There is also a new gold level of almost every enemy, bringing with them the new biggest threat, The Gold Lynel. Enemies also regenerate Health over time. meaning it is important to finish them quickly.

In the sky, you will be able to find a new enemy, the Sky Octorok, which will be flying in the sky carrying enemies with high level weapons and treasure chests. In Normal Mode, Link is protected by a game mechanic that prevents OHKOs from enemies, but In Master Mode this is gone, meaning that just eating food to regain health after every hit from a strong enemy will not be enough to save you.

The Travel Medallion

The Travel Medallion is a new item that is added via the Expansion that can be found somewhere in the world of Breath of the Wild. The Travel Medallion will allow you to register your current location so that you can then use it as a fast travel location.

Hero’s Path Mode

Although called a Mode, Hero’s Path Mode just adds the ability to view where you have traveled throughout Hyrule by means of a path that is drawn on your map, showing the progress of your adventure up to where you have been.

New Armor

The Master Trials also adds two complete outfits with Head, Chest, and Leg pieces and 3 new head pieces that can be found in chests located somewhere in Hyrule.

I FIXED Nintendo’s BIG HOLE (Zelda BOTW)

The Korok Mask will shake to let you know that there is a Korok seed nearby. This can be very useful if you are trying to collect more (or all) of the Korok Seeds in the game. Additionally, Majora’s Mask will cause most enemies to avoid attacking you, unless you strike first, allowing you to walk right past hordes of minor enemies.

The Champions’ Ballad DLC Pack

The 2nd DLC Expansion to Breath of the Wild brings a few new things to the game including outfits, a new bridle and saddle for your horse, a series of new quests, and the Master Cycle, A motorcycle Link can use to quickly cross the world.

One-Hit Obliterator

The One-Hit Obliterator is a weapon you can hold temporarily while completing the Champions’ Ballad DLC Quests. It has the power to, as the name suggests, one-hit any enemy in the game. However, holding the One-Hit Obliterator also reduces your health to 1/4 hearts. meaning that you will also be one-hit by any enemy.

Master Cycle Zero

The Master Cycle is a reward that you can obtain from completing the Champions’ Ballad DLC Quest. It can transport Link quickly throughout Hyrule, however it requires fuel to keep it going.

New Quests

The following quests are a part of The Champions’ Ballad DLC Pack:

Main Quests

Side Quests

New Armor

The Champions Ballad DLC brings 9 new armor items that can be found through treasure chests throughout Hyrule.

Ancient Bridle and Saddle

This equippable bridle and sadle will allow your horse to teleport directly to you whenever you whistle for it! Forget about going back to find your horse, as you can have it come to you in an instant.

Additionally, the bridle adds an extra two spurs to your horse’s endurance. Just note that it cannot be equipped to Epona or the Giant Horse !

It is recommended to get one of the best horses in Hyrule and equip these on it to get the most out of the effects!

Expansion Pass Bonus

Both DLC Packs and Three Chests

If you decide to buy the Expansion Pass, which is the equivalent of a Season Pass in many other games, you will receive both of the DLC Packs in Breath of the Wild, and you will also get 3 bonus chests that can be found on The Great Plateau.

zelda, nintendo, switch, expansion, pass

The Chests contain a Nintendo Switch shirt, a single Ruby, and 5 bomb arrows. While not that useful it is a nice addition and can help slightly at the beginning of the game.

Is The Expansion Pass (DLC) Worth It?

It is Definitely Worth Buying!

If you are a completionist, a fan of the Zelda series, or just a huge fan of Breath of the Wild, The Expansion Pass is a must-buy. Until Tears of the Kingdom releases, this is one way that you can get even more out of this game. If you seek a new challenge, the difficulty of Master Mode, and the Trial of the Sword should be enough to keep you satisfied!

Much like the amiibos, which allow Link to don classic costumes from other Zelda games and unlock Zelda series-based weapons, the Expansion Pass allows you to collect even more unique Zelda series-themed costumes. While most of them just look cool and will please a lover of the series, some of them like the Majora’s Mask and the Korok Mask, are actually very useful to have!

On top of that, who wouldn’t want to ride around an open-world Hyrule on a motorcycle? Even if you are just starting to play BotW for the first time, we highly recommend buying the Expansion Pass right away!

Product Information

Note that DLC Packs 1 and 2 cannnot be bought individually.

Zelda Breath of the Wild Champions’ Ballad. How to Start BOTW DLC Pack 2

This is our guide on how to get started with the Zelda Breath of the Wild Champions’ Ballad DLC pack.

The Champions’ Ballad DLC pack was the second expansion for Zelda Breath of the Wild, and takes place after the events of the main game. In this guide to the Zelda Breath of the Wild Champions’ Ballad DLC, we’ll be walking you through how to get started with the second DLC expansion for the game.

How to Start Zelda Breath of the Wild Champions’ Ballad DLC 2

The Champions’ Ballad DLC Pack 2 marks the second and final DLC update for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. To initiate the Champions’ Ballad quest, you need to have defeated all four Divine Beasts in the main game, but you don’t have to have taken down Calamity Ganon himself. Refer to our guides on each Divine Beast just below, if you’ve still got them left to complete.

  • Divine Beast Vah Ruta Guide
  • Divine Beast Vah Medoh Guide
  • Divine Beast Vah Rudania Guide
  • Divine Beast Vah Naboris Guide

After you’ve activated the terminal where you were first given the Sheikah Slate, you’ll be tasked with taking down four camps of monsters, in order to master a Divine Beast. However there’s a catch to this, as although you’re given the powerful One-Hit Obliterator weapon, Link’s health is reduced to one quarter of a heart, meaning that you’ll die if you take a single hit.

Just below, you’ll find our comprehensive guides leading on from this point in The Champions’ Ballad DLC Pack 2:

How to get the Master Cycle Zero Bike in Breath of the Wild

As you might have noticed in the trailer that announced the release of The Champions’ Ballad DLC Pack 2, Link has access to a new motorbike, named the Master Cycle Zero.

For a complete guide on how to get Link his very own motorbike, as well as all the new features of the manic vehicle, head over to our Zelda Master Cycle bike guide.

Zelda Breath of the Wild DLC 2 guide: EX Champions’ Ballad, Divine Beast Tamer’s Trial quests and new gear explained

Everything on the second DLC expansion explained, including in-progress explainers on its trials.

The Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC 2: The Champions’ Ballad is the second of two add-on chunks of content for the huge Switch and Wii U adventure.

Like DLC 1 The Master Trials, this expansion introduces new gear for you to find and collect, but also expands on the end game with new quests and Shrines to explore. which this Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC 1 guide will explain how to complete.

It’s not an easy expansion to complete, which is why you’ll need to do a good chunk of the game’s story before you can access it

If you’re after help for the main game itself, then consult our Zelda: Breath of the Wild walkthrough and guide.

What is in the Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC 2?

When you purchase the expansion pass and patch the game to the latest version (on Switch, select the Zelda game icon, press the button then System Update) you’ll be told about all the new content on the home screen.

There are essentially three new additions to the game:

  • The Champions’ Ballad (new post-game quest)
  • Treasure Rumours (nine new items across EX Treasure quests Dark Armor, Usuper King, Garb of Winds, Merchant Hood and Royal Guard Rumors)
  • Ancient Horse Gear (Saddle and Bridle in the EX Ancient Horse Rumors quest)
  • Master Cycle Zero (available once the main quest is complete)

Loading into your save will activate all the gear quests, which must be completed before you can access their relevant additions. The Champions’ Ballad, meanwhile, requires you take down all four of the Divine Beasts before you can begin.

EX The Champions’ Ballad: How to start the DLC 2 main quest

Again, first, make sure you have completed all four Divine Beasts to first activate the quest. This means all four dungeons and defeated each of the four Ganon Blight bosses that inhabit each one.

This is important because you’ll need to have unlocked all of the special Champion powers (there are four in total) so you can upgrade them as part of the DLC’s story.

Also, you’ll be returning to each Divine Beast a second time, so knowing how to defeat each boss will become very hand again later in the game.

Make sure that each Divine Beast questline has been completed, including speaking to any characters tied to that part of the main questline.

Once this is completed, Zelda will speak to you in a ghostly voice, beckoning you to visit the Shrine Of Resurrection where you started the game in the first place.

The Shrine Of Resurrection is based in the Great Plateau, but don’t worry if you can’t remember where it is as a marker will appear on the map.

You can also fast travel to the Shrine Of Resurrection, just like any other shrine. Interact with console to your right as you enter the doorway to begin the DLC.

How to use the One-Hit Obliterator

Following a brief cutscene, you’ll notice a special weapon that’s appeared in the shrine. This is the One-Hit Obliterator.

As its name suggest, one hit from this melee tool will kill any enemy dead, but there’s one very powerful caveat. regardless of how far you’ve upgraded your health, it will be stripped to a quarter of heart.

This means you’re as fragile as porcelain and everything from fall damage to running into spikes will kill you immediately. The One-Hit Obliterator is also a short-range melee weapon, so you’ll need to be careful when dealing with enemies with poles, spears and arrows.

Here’s a tip that isn’t immediately clear when you start the DLC. you can still use ranged weapons and shields.

Both of these things will become hugely important to dealing with the four camps of enemies you’ll need to clear in order to progress to the next part of the DLC, so consider heading back into the rest of Hyrule to stock up on multiple arrow types.

Just keep in mind that arrows such as Bomb Arrows have a splash damage radius that will need to be taken into account if you’re using them in the heat of battle.

This part of the DLC is self-contained within the Great Plateau, so you won’t be able to take the One-Hit Obliterator into the rest of the game world. Any enemy camps you’re currently part way through will also be reset if you leave, so stock up before you start proper.

Also, have a strong and durable shield to hand to deflect any enemy attacks that slip through. Your dodge and backflip will also serve you very well through this early section.

Thanks to a new update, it’s now possible to play Zelda Breath of the Wild in VR. Want help with the main game? Our Zelda: Breath of the Wild walkthrough can help complete Divine Beasts Vah Ruta, Vah Rudiana, Vah Medoh and Vah Naboris and more. There’s also how to get the Master Sword, Hylian Shield and all Zelda Captured Memories and Great Fairy Fountain locations, while our Shrines locations and Shrine maps hub explains where to find and solve every puzzle room, including dragon locations and Labyrinth solutions. We also have a DLC 1 guide and DLC 2 guide, including all Tingle, Majora’s Mask, Phantom, Midna outfit locations.

EX The Champions’ Ballad guide: How to complete The Divine Beast Tamer’s Trial

From collecting the One-Hit Obliterator, you’ll be taking taking down four camps, each one unlocking the following Shrines. They can be completed any order:

Four new locations will then appear in the map, all located near or relatively close to the Divine Beasts you conquered and purified in the main story. You’ll now need to travel to each location where you’ll be given three more coordinates.

Each one corresponds to a new shrine. that means you’ll have to complete a total of 12 more shrines to progress to the final part of the DLC. Oh, and there’s a few boss fights to come as well, naturally.

After that, you then have four new quests, each of which containing three shrines each. You must complete all of these. in any order. to then reach the final dungeon.

Once you have done all 12 (!) shrines and their bosses, the final dungeon and boss will be available:

Once you have done that, the DLC is yours. along with the prize of Master Cycle Zero, which allows you to explore Hyrule in a whole new way. Congratulations. you deserve it!
