Xiaomi Smart Camera 2i Offers A Hassle-Free Security Setup For Homes, Small Businesses

CCTV cameras are today a boon to individuals and businesses to maintain security against bad actors.- whether it’s with respect to burglary or the occurrence of an ill event.- a CCTV footage often comes in handy to catch the culprits red-handed.

And while complex CCTV setups exist for thorough coverage, a home user might not require such an extensive setup. That’s where Xiaomi’s Smart Camera 2i comes in.

The Wi-Fi-enabled camera system eliminates the need for complicated DVR systems and wiring and instead offers a CCTV setup involving either a single or multiple cameras that claims to be easy to set up and control from a user’s smartphone.

But is this camera as good as they claim? Let’s find out.

What’s in the box

Xiaomi’s Smart Camera 2i’s box includes the camera unit, a charging brick with a detachable micro USB cable, some user manual and a mount to attach the camera to the wall or the ceiling.

While a USB type-C would have been perfect, considering this is a device launching in the year 2022, it’s great that Xiaomi did include a cable and charging brick along with the camera.

What’s more is that the charging brick and cable were detachable, which means one can easily purchase an extra-long micro-USB cable, if it’s needed for their setup and use the same included power brick with it.

The setup process

Setting up the Smart Camera 2i was effortless. Simply install the Mi Home app, power the camera on, scan the QR code under the camera when prompted, enter the Wi-Fi password and that’s it.

The entire setup took not more than five minutes for me, which was really impressive. over, the process was simple enough to understand for anyone who isn’t very tech-savvy.

Controlling the camera

Once the setup is complete, the phone app gives you a live feed of the camera, with the camera unit blinking a blue light indicating its ‘ON’ status. Its movement can be controlled by simply touching the feed screen, to move the camera in the angle you wish to.

You also get a digital D-pad on the app for more precise movements, however, I found the former to be more user-friendly.

When on the same network, the movement is almost instantaneous. over, the camera also is pretty silent in its movements.

Camera quality

Xiaomi’s website has been pretty coy in revealing what resolution the camera captures in, and simply reveals that it’s a 1080p camera.

They claim it has two million pixels, which translates to the camera being a two-megapixel sensor, which is on-par for CCTV cameras at this price point.

The field of view is pretty wide with a 360-degree view from left to right and 180 degrees from top to bottom (when in movement. However, even when stationary, the field of view was impressive to encompass a major part of the room.

The camera hardware is accompanied by rather impressive 940nm infrared LEDs which are able to capture sharp imagery even in pitch darkness when the lights are off.

The included AI detection also does a phenomenal job of detecting moving objects/people in the dark and instantly sends an alarm on the Mi Home app. However, we would have loved to see automatic movement towards moving objects, instead of only viewing them in that particular field of view. Also, the camera can only be motion triggered every three to thirty minutes.

Footage storage

The camera holds CCTV footage in a microSD card that can be inserted at the bottom. It supports at least 16GB of memory card with maximum supported memory of 32GB. We would have loved to see more than 32GB of storage since the storage tends to get full pretty quickly if you have the camera on for days.

You also have the option of attaching NAS-based online storage, if you have that kind of setup, but considering this was supposed to be a simple to set up device, the buyer might not even know what a NAS storage is, let alone own one. The ability to support higher-config cards could have easily solved this problem.

You do, however, get 7 days of Cloud backup for motion-triggered video footage, which is definitely a feature worth having.

Surveillance using the Mi TV app as well as Windows PC

In case you have a more complex setup and don’t like navigating through cameras on your smartphone, the camera can also be viewed from a Windows PC app (available on Mi.com) as well as Mi TV’s Mi Home app.

Simply logging in to the app using your Mi account adds the details of the Smart cameras connected to these apps seamlessly. This works for both the new 2i Smart cameras as well as the previous generation ones.
