The Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner is one of Xiaomi’s best ecosystem products, and with this model, Xiaomi is rolling out a few upgrades, including a wet clean option. If you haven’t heard of the Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner, a quick refresher: under the Mi Ecosystem label, Xiaomi partners with Chinese hardware vendors to release lifestyle and Smart home products, and the robot vacuum cleaner falls under this category.
The robot is manufactured by Roborock, one of Xiaomi’s hardware partners, and while the first-gen model featured the Mijia label (a Xiaomi sub-brand that caters to the Smart home segment), this version of the Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner comes with Roborock branding or Mi branding in select markets like India. The goal is to give more prominence to the ecosystem partners, and aside from the label change, there aren’t any differences in build quality or features. If anything, the Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner feels more robust.
Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner Design and operation
The Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner shares the same design aesthetic as the first-gen model — there are a lot of white elements interlaced with grey — but there are a few changes in the layout. The biggest change is that it now has a mop function, allowing the robot to perform a dry and wet clean in one go.
The manual gives you a breakdown of all the vacuum’s features, and the default language is set to English out of the box, so you don’t have to rely on Google Translate to decipher what the vacuum is saying.
The front houses the water tank and mop, and the brushes for the dry clean are located at the back. There are two speakers up front, and the dust collection tray, as well as Wi-Fi reset buttons, are located underneath the lid. The dry clean option is unchanged from the first-gen Mi Robot — there’s a rotating brush on the right side that siphons particles into the path of the robot, and there’s a circular brush underneath the vacuum that does a great job of sucking in dirt.
There are two wheels on either side, and a smaller balancing wheel at the back that sits in between the charging pins. The robot now has a 2cm obstacle clearance, so it manages to go over rugs and other indents on the floor without any issues. And talking about charging, the charger base is significantly smaller than last time. And because there’s a mop feature, you get a pad that prevents the vacuum from streaking wooden floors when it’s charging.
As the front section houses a mop, the vacuum goes back-to-front when cleaning, allowing it to do a dry clean and follow it up with the mop. It still follows a grid-based cleaning system, dividing a particular room into zones and going back and forth to cover the entire space.
You don’t necessarily need to use the Mi Home app to monitor the Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner. You can start the cleaning by hitting the power button, and the robot does the rest by itself. But if you want to take a look at the vacuum’s cleaning route in real-time or get a detailed view of the cleaning statistics and remaining charge level, then Mi Home comes in handy.
You can easily connect the Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner to Mi Home after downloading the app. The vacuum has built-in Wi-Fi, and it’s fairly straightforward to hook it up to Mi Home. Just install the app and log in with a Mi account, and you should see the Mi Robot shortly after the app loads. You can then connect the robot to your home’s Wi-Fi network (it works over 2.4GHz), and once it’s paired with Mi Home, you can access its full list of features.
From within the Mi Home app, you’ll be able to view the virtual map that the vacuum “sees,” and take a look at the cleaning area and the time it took the robot to clean a particular room. A cool new feature is the ability to put a marker anywhere in the house and direct the robot to clean that spot.
Mi Home lets you set a Do Not Disturb schedule for the robot, which essentially shuts down the vacuum for that predetermined time. There’s also the ability to change the volume level, install new language packs, set automated cleaning schedules, view the cleaning history, and get details on maintenance. The main filter and brush are washable, so you won’t have to change them anytime soon. The filter is usually good for about 150 hours of cleaning time, and the brushes need to be changed after 300 hours.
You can also change the cleaning mode from within Mi Home. If you’re changing the cleaning mode from the default to either Turbo or Max, note that the robot will make significantly more noise. Particularly in Max mode, it feels like there’s a whirlwind in your house.
Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner Should you buy it?
Overall, the Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner is one of the best robot vacuums you can buy today, and the combination of features combined with real-time monitoring makes it a great choice. The laser sensor does a fantastic job routing around objects in your house, and once it creates a 3D virtual map, it will use that for future cleaning runs.
The fact that you also get a wet clean option makes it that much more enticing, and the ability to set schedules and see the vacuum’s progress in real-time means you get more control.
The Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner is limited to select markets, and the easiest way to get your hands on the vacuum is by heading to Gearbest. Xiaomi is also kicking off sales in India via its crowdsourcing platform, but the caveat there is that the vacuum needs to get 10,000 backers for Xiaomi to fulfil orders, and even then you’ll have to wait five months for delivery.

The Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum is a mid-range robot vacuum. It feels well-built, has a long battery life, and maneuvers itself effectively. It also performs superbly well on bare floors and does a decent job clearing debris from low-pile carpets. However, it can’t clean high-pile carpets, incurs high recurring costs, and has quite a few parts that require regular maintenance. It’s also worth noting that this vacuum isn’t currently supported by its manufacturer in the United States or Canada; the North American servers for this vacuum’s companion app don’t currently include this model.
The Xiaomi Mijia is very good for bare floors. It easily cleans pet hair and small debris like rice. It also performs well with bulkier material like cereal, though suction performance does slightly decrease as its dustbin fills up. Battery performance is superb, and its LIDAR navigation system allows it to maneuver itself quite effectively. However, you can’t set up virtual boundary markers using its companion app. There are also quite a few parts that require regular maintenance or need periodic replacing, meaning recurring costs can add up.
The Xiaomi Mijia is a satisfactory option for cleaning low-pile carpet. It does a fantastic job of cleaning pet hair and sucks up most larger debris like sand. That said, it may need to make another pass to fully clean fine debris like baking soda. It feels well-built and has a long battery life, so it shouldn’t run out of charge mid-way through a cleaning session. However, like many robot vacuums, it’s demanding in terms of regular maintenance and incurs quite a few recurring costs.
The Xiaomi Mijia isn’t designed for cleaning high-pile carpets, as it gets stuck when trying to climb onto this kind of surface.
The Xiaomi Mijia is decent for cleaning pet hair. It does a fantastic job of sucking up this kind of debris on bare floors and low-pile carpet, though it’s incapable of cleaning high pile carpet. It has an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, which is helpful if your pet sheds heavily. You can remove its brushroll, too, which makes it easier to clear hair wraps.

Compared To Other Vacuums
The Xiaomi Mijia is a mid-range robot vacuum. It offers superb performance on bare floors and has long battery life. However, it isn’t quite as well-built as the Roborock S4 Max, and it doesn’t support virtual boundary markers.

The Roborock S7 is slightly better than the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum. The Roborock feels better-built, maneuvers itself more effectively, has more automation features, and can clean high-pile carpet. It also has a longer maximum battery life, though the Xiaomi charges faster. The Xiaomi also performs notably better on low-pile carpet and has an easier time cleaning pet hair on bare floors.

The Roborock is better-built, can be used to clean high-pile carpet, lasts longer on a charge, and is fully compatible with a self-emptying station. The Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum is better than the iRobot Roomba 694 for most uses. The Xiaomi has fewer parts needing regular cleaning, is fitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has more advanced automation capabilities, does a better job maneuvering itself, and sucks up more debris on bare floors and low-pile carpet. However, unlike the iRobot, the Xiaomi can’t be used on high-pile carpet. The iRobot also feels better built and charges faster.
The Roborock S5 is more versatile than the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum. The Roborock is better built, has an automatic surface-type detection feature, supports virtual boundary markers, and performs better on bare floors and low-pile carpet. It also has a mopping attachment for dealing with sticky messes on bare floors, though we don’t currently test that function. Conversely, the Xiaomi does a better job of sucking up fine debris like baking soda on low-pile carpet.
The Roborock E4 is more well-rounded than the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum. The Roborock feels sturdier, has a larger dustbin, weighs less, is more maneuverable, and performs better on bare floors and high-pile carpet. The Xiaomi Mi Robot is well-built. It feels similar to Roborock vacuums, like the Roborock S4 Max, with a hard plastic body and durable rubber wheels. However, its side brush can wear out over time, and its dustbin could break if you were to drop it.
Out-of-the-box setup is quite simple, only requiring that you plug in its docking station and connect to its ‘Mi Home’ companion app.
Note: This vacuum isn’t currently supported by its ‘Mi Home’ companion app when connected to the North American server. To connect to its companion app, you need to change the server region to ‘Hong Kong’. Also, some Amazon user reports have indicated that this vacuum is ineligible for returns or a 12-month warranty if purchased from the United States or Canada.
- Brushroll: The brushroll can be accessed by removing the plastic cover underneath the vacuum. The brushroll can then be pulled free, and you can clear any tangled hair or stuck-on debris from its bristles using the included cleaning tool. Don’t forget to remove any accumulated debris from its bearings. You should clean the brushroll itself once a week.
- Side brush: You need a screwdriver in order to remove the side brush. You should clean it every month.
- Dirt compartment: The dirt compartment can be removed by lifting the cover on top of the vacuum and then pressing the release tabs. You can empty it by tapping it gently over a garbage can. Due to its small size, it needs frequent emptying.
- HEPA filter: This component is inside the dirt compartment, which you need to remove first before unclipping the filter from its housing. It should be cleaned by hand every week, but make sure not to wash it under water to avoid blockages.
- Wheel: The front caster wheel can be pulled from its housing, though it takes quite a bit of force to do this. You may find it easier to use a pair of pliers to remove it. You should clean the wheel and its socket and axle of any stuck-on debris once a month.
- Sensors: You should clean the sensors of any dust or debris with a dry cloth once a month.
The ‘User Guide’ tab in its in-app settings menu allows you to check maintenance instructions for cleaning or replacing specific components.
Note: This vacuum isn’t currently supported by its ‘Mi Home’ companion app when connected to the North American server. The included user guide is in Mandarin, and the voice prompts are set to Mandarin by default. To connect to its companion app, you need to change the server region to ‘Hong Kong’. You can also change the language for the in-app user guide to English.

Xiaomi Robot Vacuum vs Samsung PowerBot R9040: Which One is Better?

Over the past few months I’ve been given the opportunity to test a number of robotic vacuums from GearBest. Out of the (almost) 20 robots I’ve tested, the Xiaomi would by my favorite. It’s one of their bestselling products that have the tech and performance to challenge the giants, Roomba and Neato. Samsung has been a leader in consumer electronics – mobile phones, air conditioning unites, washing machines, you name it Samsung has a product for it. But not a lot of people know that they manufacture robotic vacuums. And the PowerBot R9040 is one of their earlier variants that utilize a camera for navigation. And when I found out that he bought this, I immediately texted him and asked if I could borrow it for a week. And here’s part of the result of those tests.

Before anything also please watch this video so that you’ll get an idea of the difference between these two.
The immediate difference you’ll notice is the color. Samsung comes has a black matte finish with blue accents. Xiaomi has an all-white finish.
The Samsung PowerBot has the same D-shape as the Neato but that’s where the similarities end.
Samsung is taller and wider than Xiaomi due to product design. The middle part is where the motor and bin sits.
Unlike most other robot cleaners that use a paper element filter, Samsung utilizes cyclonic filtration with a washable filter at the end.
The bin is one of the largest bins at 0.7 liters which contributes to its massive size.
You won’t be able to pick this robot up with one hand unlike ILIFE.
Xiaomi is much shorter, measuring just 3.15” tall. Compare that to Samsung that measures 5-5/16″, it’s like David and Goliath in terms of height.
Being shorter in this case is good because it will allow it more reach underneath furniture. And Xiaomi is also narrower by around an inch so it’ll fight tighter spaces better.
Flip both over and this is where you’ll really see the size different. Everything in the Samsung is bigger – motorized brush and wheels. It also has more wheels – a total of 6 if you include the two wheels in front of the brush.
Both these robots have cliff sensors on front that prevent it from falling off areas like stairs. The downside to cliff sensors is that it’ll not be able to clean dark colored flooring. If you have black carpet, these robots will not go over it.
One big difference would be the presence of a side brush in the Xiaomi.
Another difference would be the width of the motorized brush. Samsung literally dwarfs Xiaomi’s brush.
Both have a similar bristled and squeegee type design that works well on pet hair.
It’s pretty close to the edge but there’s an inch gap on the left side. The lack of a side brush hurts it in terms of edge cleaning.
When I first saw the PowerBot I thought it had a similar navigation as the Roomba 980 because it had a camera but I was wrong.
Even with the camera it wasn’t as Smart as a Roomba. Yes, it goes in a predictable cleaning pattern but it isn’t Smart enough to know the areas it has cleaned.

You’ll notice that it goes in a predictable back and forth pattern and does cover a lot of ground.
The predictable cleaning pattern looks efficient but it isn’t. In several cleaning tests I did, it took a long time (close to an hour) to clean the same amount of dirt that an ILIFE will take 20 minutes to do so.
So the navigation isn’t a good justification of the price difference between these two products but that’s for another article.
Another potential downside to a camera based system is it needs light for it to work. In pitch dark conditions this robot will have trouble tracking its position.
Xiaomi utilizes a much different approach. Instead of using a camera, it has a laser guided sensor similar to the Neato BotVac. In addition to that laser guided system it has the S.L.A.M. algorithm that helps it track its position.
This is the same technology found in the Google self-driving car so this is high tech.
Its navigation is simple, first thing it’ll do is clean the edges then move towards the middle and it does it twice. Make sure that you update the software to get this feature.
This product is an exact clone of a Neato BotVac but it looks much different with the round shape and much narrow brush.
If you’ve watched the whole video above you probably know how these two robots compare to each other.
For each of the cleaning tests, I scattered 50 grams of dirt that contained oats, dust, power and hair.
And the results are pretty close.

And here’s what it did after almost an hour of cleaning. Despite the predictable cleaning pattern, it was not efficient.
If there’s one thing that it struggled with it’s edge cleaning because it lacks a side brush. You’ll see in the latter two pictures above that there’s a lot of dirt left.
In terms of performance, it did a pretty good job, cleaning 45 out of the 50 grams. But it’s very inefficient in doing so taking almost an hour.
Xiaomi is much more efficient. First let’s look at some screenshots of the video…

It’s much more efficient than the Samsung thanks to the laser-guided sensor and S.L.A.M. algorithm. The laser-guided sensor helps it detect obstacles in it’s path and maps out the outline of the room.
It does not have the acoustic sensors that detect dirt found in the Roomba 980 but it “remembers” the areas it has gone over thanks to the S.L.A.M. software.
Out of the box this robot will go around the room only once so you’re buying this robot make sure to upgrade the software through the app.
Upgrading the app will give you access to a better navigation system that will go through the room twice and pick up more dirt.
The navigation software also allows it to clean multiple rooms with little risk not returning to home base.
Xiaomi comes with a paper element HEPA filter that isn’t washable. Samsung doesn’t have a HEPA filter but it’s washable. So that somehow makes up for the lack of filtration.
Samsung’s bin is also easier to empty while Xiaomi has more tight crevices that make it a little more difficult to empty.
Where can I buy these robots?
The Samsung PowerBot R9040 is much more expensive and you’ll get the best deal in Amazon.

To Wrap It Up
The bottom line is the Xiaomi is a better product overall. If you compare the spec sheet, Xiaomi has the better navigation, better app, is smaller and the more efficient cleaning robot.
Samsung looked promising but as spent time testing and knowing its quirks, it didn’t live up to the hype and lacked some features that could have made it more competitive against the top brands.
Even with the camera, it was less efficient than an ILIFE that costs much less. The app also was a disappointment because it was bare. It pales in comparison to the Xiaomi app that has tons of features. The only features is has is scheduling, RC control and allow you to turn on the robot remotely but that’s about it.
It will not tell you battery status and won’t allow scheduling multiple times a day which is a big con for me. If Xiaomi is able to pull it off, a larger company like Samsung with millions spent on RD should be able to have at least the same features.
And with the nearly 300 price difference between these two, I’d go with the Xiaomi anytime of the day.
Another thing that hampers Samsung would be the size. It measures 5 5/16 inches tall which is more than 2 inches taller than Xiaomi. This size prevents it from going under a lot of furniture. Obviously if the furniture you have under your home has lots of clearance.
The only reason I can think why you’d buy a Samsung PowerBot is brand loyalty and it’s compatibility with Alexa.
But there are better products compatible with Alexa such as the BotVac Connected and Roomba 980.
