Check out a new 4K HDR professional monitor, New CrewCom IP-Rated Radio Transceivers, and Merging Technologies.

Sony is heading to NAB 2023 with a new monitor while Pliant Technologies is showcasing its latest CrewCom IP-Rated Radio Transceivers. Here’s what’s in store at their booths this week.

Sony Electronics Debuts Flagship 4K HDR Monitor, BVM-HX3110

Sony Electronics is launching a premium 30.5-inch 4K HDR professional monitor for critical evaluation, color grading, live production, and post-production. A prototype will make its debut at Sony’s booth, C8101, at NAB Show 2023.

The BVM-HX3110 features a Sony-designed dual layer anti-reflection LCD panel with Sony proprietary signal processing, supporting a higher peak luminance of up to 4000cd/m² while maintaining no-compromise deep blacks.

Along with characteristics such as accurate color reproduction, picture consistency and precision imaging, which are hallmarks of Sony’s BVM-series of monitors, the BVM-HX3110 offers brighter specular highlights and introduces a new optional fast pixel response mode for reduced motion blur. It also provides a wider viewing angle, as well as standard IP interface for SMPTE ST2110 signals, to complement Sony’s Networked Live ecosystem. The well-established BVM-HX310 remains available as a companion model to the BVM-HX3110, offering consistency in color reproduction, gamma curve and operation.

The monitor’s new standard toolset incorporates Waveform Monitor/Vector Scope (WF/VS), false color, FOCUS assist, closed captioning, 3D LUT processing, and quad and side-by-side viewing modes, among other valuable features. In addition to fast pixel response, supplemental benefits include support for JPEG-XS as well as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) through optional licenses. Additional optional licenses enable tools such as HDR/SDR conversion and a user 3D LUT signal-output.

Pliant Technologies Features New CrewCom IP-Rated Radio Transceivers

Pliant Technologies will debut its new CrewCom IP-Rated Radio Transceivers (RTs) at the Central Hall, Booth C7521. The new RTs are the latest addition to the flagship CrewCom wireless intercom line. They are available in both 900MHz and 2.4GHz versions and are ideal for broadcasters and any live event where outdoor placement of transceivers for wireless coverage is required.

Available in four models; 900MHz for North America, 900MHz for Oceania, 2.4GHz for CE countries and 2.4GHz for all other areas, the new line of highly weather resistant IP-rated RTs provides wireless intercom coverage where needed, without any concern regarding weather related issues.

The newly designed RTs feature a sleek, yet durable ABS plastic housing along with silicone-molded connector covers to ensure moisture ingress protection for unused connections. In addition, an updated power connector (for use with the optional PPS-48V-02 Power Supply) has also been added to allow for a push/pull quick-release connection and disconnection.

The IP-rated RT supports seamless roaming and can be software selected for either six Normal mode users or 32 High Density users and is 100% compatible with all CrewCom systems and existing transceivers.

Merging Technologies returns to NAB

Merging Technologies will be exhibiting at stand C4517 with its catalogue of product developments, including two plug-ins for the Music Mission (Deesser and BlackHole reverb from Eventide), 336 bands of EQ and the integration of Sonarworks SoundID Reference into the MERGING Anubis, for seamless headphone and speaker calibration. The Merging team will be demoing this integration on the stand, which now also includes support for multichannel corrections.

Furthermore, 2023 also brings with it the Dolby certification of Merging Technologies’ VAD premium AES67 driver. A low-cost solution for using a Mac as a dedicated Dolby Atmos Renderer workstation in an AES67 environment (Dante devices @48kHz, Merging Devices up to 96kHz), the driver is Dolby certified for both home entertainment and theatrical applications, tapping into a fresh market of potential end-users for Merging Technologies.

Additional optional licenses enable tools such as HDR/SDR conversion and a user 3D LUT signal-output.

The BVM-HX3110 utilizes the same color gamut and works seamlessly alongside several of Sony’s monitors such as the complementary and well-established BVM-HX310, as well as the PVM-X and LMD-A series monitors. This also includes the just-announced LMD-A180, an 18.4 inch HD HDR high grade picture monitor with a wide color gamut. Ideal for on-set monitoring, the LMD-A180 can also be rack mounted for general monitoring purposes. It replaces the LMD-A170 monitor.

A prototype of the BVM-HX3110 will be in Sony’s booth, #C8101, at NAB Show 2023 from April 16-19 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. It is expected to be available in November 2023. The LMD-A180 is planned to come to market in the fall of 2023.

Sony finally announces a 4K monitor you might actually want

Known for everything from TVs to cameras and smartphones, Sony is getting into gaming peripherals, it announced Tuesday. Sony’s new InZone brand will include a pair of monitors, plus wireless and wired headsets aimed at PC and, naturally, Playstation gamers.

Sony’s first consumer monitors in ages

Sony isn’t likely a name you think of when going PC monitor shopping. It hasn’t made consumer monitors since the early 2000s, though it has continued to sell expensive, chunky professional monitors for broadcast and production. That changes with the flagship Sony inZone M9 and its sibling, the InZone M3.

The M9, never to be confused with the Samsung M8 4K Smart monitor announced in March, is a 27-inch 4K HDR monitor with a 144 Hz refresh rate. Its most interesting feature, however, is its LED backlight with full-array local dimming (FALD), which—along with VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification and 95 percent claimed DCI-P3 coverage—is particularly appealing for HDR users.

In its video announcement, Sony said it decided to use a FALD backlight to make the IPS panel’s contrast more comparable to a VA monitor without sacrificing the lower response times IPS can achieve. The M9 claims a 1ms gray-to-gray (GtG) response time.

Sony told Ars Technica that the monitor has 96 dimming zones. Considering you can find monitors with more than 1,000 FALD zones, there are obviously more advanced local dimming monitors available than the InZone M9.

Sony claimed the display has an 80,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. It didn’t share static contrast ratio numbers, so we’d love to see dynamic contrast in action to see if it’s effective.

For console gamers, Sony’s M9 supports Auto HDR Tone Mapping which, in a press release, Sony said works with the Playstation 5 to automatically recognize the monitor during initial setup and [optimize] HDR settings.

Additionally, the monitor will automatically switch to Cinema Mode when watching movies on Playstation 5 and Game Mode when playing games, Sony’s announcement said.

Samsung recently started selling a 4K, 240 Hz monitor, but the M9’s speed specs should be sufficient for most gamers. There’s also G-Sync Compatibility to fight screen tears when your GPU’s frame rate doesn’t match the monitor’s refresh rate and variable refresh rate for the PS5 via HDMI 2.1.

The M9 was announced alongside the M3. It’s a 27-inch 1920×1080 display with a 240 Hz refresh rate for those who prioritize speed over sharp image quality but don’t need the fastest refresh rate natively found in gaming monitors today, 360 Hz.

The M3 has lesser VESA DisplayHDR certification that promises a minimum brightness of 400 nits with HDR and a smaller color claim of 99 percent sRGB.

Although both screens are for gamers, they can also be home office hacks. Since they’re KVM monitors, you can use them to control two PCs with the same keyboard, mouse, and headset, Sony said.

Sony said the M9 would be available this summer for 900, and the M3 will be 530 within 2022.

A trio of headsets

Sony’s newfound gaming efforts also include a trio of headsets that are already available in the US. They’re the Sony InZone H9, H7, and H3 and, of course, shouldn’t be confused with Asus’ TUF Gaming series of gaming headsets, like the H1 Wireless or the H3.

The wireless Sony InZone H9 gaming headset (40mm neodymium drivers, 5-20,000 Hz frequency range) has a 32-hour battery life claim, while the InZone H7 (40mm neodymium drivers, 5-20,000 Hz frequency range) claims 40 hours before needing a charge.

Sony width=980 height=552 /

The more affordable Sony InZone H3 (40mm neodymium drivers, 10-20,000 Hz frequency range), meanwhile, is wired.

All three headsets support 360-degree spatial sound, which you customize by using an app to take a photo of your ear. Note that you’ll need a PC with a USB-A port and Windows 10 or later to use the feature.

For PS5 gamers, the feeling of spatial audio will have to be attempted through the console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech.

Sony is selling the InZone H9 for 300, the H7 for 230, and the H3 for 100.

Sony PVM-2541 OLED Monitor Rentals

25 Display 1920X1080 10-Bit RGB OLED 178 Viewing Angle Built-in Waveform Vector Scopes Safe Area Markers Focus Aid Function Display Mode Sleection Seven Allignable Preset Buttons Built in Closed Caption Decoders Line Doubler for fast moving images

The Sony PVM-2541A 25 Professional OLED Picture Monitor is used for critical image assessment and is at home in both a production and post production environment. The PVM-2541A displays NTSC, PAL and HD video supporting interlaced, progressive and PsF formats. It supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 and frame rates from 23.98 to 60P, displaying your images with 10-bit color depth. The PVM-2541A features composite, SD/HD-SDI and HDMI inputs with composite and SD/HD-SDI outputs built into a lightweight, yet sturdy metal frame. Off axis viewing color shift has been reduced over previous Sony OLED PVM monitors, making this an excellent choice for either a single viewer, or when an entire group is going to be watching.

The monitor features built-in waveform and vector scope displays for checking that the video signal is within spec. The built-in camera FOCUS aid enhances the edge detail for critical FOCUS adjustments, allowing you to judge FOCUS on a large 25 screen. Timecode display, audio level indicators and safe area markers allow you to precisely check your images for framing issues or audio distortion, either while shooting or finishing your project.

A built-in display function features four selectable modes for adjusting how the monitor displays interlaced video. The PVM-2541A also features seven assignable control buttons with LED indicators and a rotary switch, for making selections and adjustments to the monitor. Built-in decoders allow you to display closed captioning on the monitor.

Display

The OLED is an RGB 10-bit display, which features a color gamut that exceeds the EBU and SMPTE-C specifications. The display presents an image with fine detail and smooth transitions from bright to dark, without the banding artifacts that an 8-bit display can introduce. The OLED panels are factory tested, calibrated and adjusted to ensure that all panels are uniform in performance. The wide viewing angle allows for off axis viewing when everyone is crowding around the monitor to see the footage. This allows you to see a consistent image from virtually any position.

I/P Mode Functions

The PVM-2541A provides four user selectable modes for viewing interlaced footage as progressive frames.

Inter-Field This mode interpolates the images between fields to reduce jagged edges from temporal artifacts.

Intra-Field This mode interpolates the images within a field for quick signal processing and is only available for a 1920 x 1080 signal.

Field Merge This mode merges odd and even fields together, and is best used when viewing either still images or Progressive Segmented Frames (PsF). Moving images captured in an interlaced format and displayed in this mode will tend to display jitter due temporal artifacts.

Line Doubler This mode doubles each field and is useful for editing and monitoring fast moving images. There is a processing delay of less than half a frame.

Video Audio

The monitor supports video resolutions from SD (NTSC PAL) up through Full HD at 60p. It supports standard frame rates and is compatible with 1000/1001 frame rates as well. Featuring Composite, SD/HD/3G-SDI and HDMI inputs, with a composite and an SD/HD-SDI output. Audio input is via a stereo mini jack and the monitor features embedded audio decoding and display. The PVM-2541A features a built-in speaker, headphone jack and additional stereo mini jack for audio output.

Production Features

The monitor features a built-in waveform monitor for technical analysis of your video signal. The waveform graticule features level markings, and you can zoom in for a closer inspection. The waveform can also be displayed using the line select feature that allows you to examine individual video lines. The built-in vector scope allows you to precisely evaluate your camera’s color settings and white balance. The vector scope function also features a zoom function. You can select safety area markers for 80, 85, 88, 90 and 93%. Users can select to display either VITC or LTC timecode that is embedded in the SDI signals. The monitor can control the aperture level of the video signal to sharpen edge detail. This can be used to help the camera operator achieve sharp FOCUS. You can choose from white, red, green, blue and yellow to indicate areas of sharpest FOCUS. Audio level meters for eight channels of SDI embedded audio can be displayed on the screen at one time. You can select either channels 1 to 8, or 9 to 16. Closed-caption signals embedded in the SD/HD-SDI signal and conforming to EIA/CEA-608 or EIA/CEA-708 can be decoded and displayed on the monitor.

Physical Interface

The front control panel features a rotary selector switch and seven assignable function buttons. The monitor buttons also feature LED indicators for ease of use in dimly lit areas. The LED indicators can be turned on or off as needed. Select functions of the monitor can be controlled via the Ethernet connection over a network. An optional remote control unit can also interface with the monitor to control power on/off and input select. You can calibrate the monitor using available calibration tools and available downloadable software for a PC.
