Best Scary Roblox Games You Should Play in 2023

The collective spirit of community has always been strong in gamers. It doesn’t matter if you’re a gamer playing online games with strangers or looking for Among Us Discord servers; the bond has always been there. Among the plethora of community open-world games out there, Roblox has quickly become one of the best community-rich platforms. Allowing custom game creations, Roblox has a wide variety of games that dive into all sorts of genres, including shooters, roleplaying, kid’s games, and more. Our FOCUS today is on the scariest Roblox games out there that will leave you shivering. So if you’re a Roblox gamer looking for the best scary games in 2023, here you are.

Dead Silence

Long considered to be one of the scariest Roblox games, Dead Silence is a creepy and breathtaking experience. Based on the horror film of the same name, Dead Silence puts you in the shoes of an investigator. Your job is to investigate the disappearance of Mary Shaw, a murdered ventriloquist who supposedly haunts the local town.

Packing a level design that will make you wary of every corner, topped with eerie creaking sounds and whispered hushes, this creepily scary Roblox game will ensure you leave the lights on when you go to sleep. Check it out and get scared.

The Apartment

You will be surprised to know that one of the best scary Roblox games doesn’t rely on jumpscares. And for good reason, since the apartment focuses more on creating an eerily unsettling atmosphere to scare gamers. As the player, you are a friend coming to help a fellow bud out.

Left with only a note telling you to head up to Apartment 705, it is your job to make it up there while wading through the creepy floors. One of the best things about this scary Roblox game is the atmosphere which will constantly have you on your toes and checking every corner. While we won’t spoil the story for you, rest assured it is something interesting. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Alone in a Dark House

Another exploration-based horror game for Roblox, Alone in a dark house, combines story elements and walking mechanics with a lot of scares. Set in August 1996, the game makes you a private investigator who travels to a small town. Your FOCUS is a brutal vehicle murder, and your journey will take you to a big house that contains a multitude of secrets.

While you may think the empty place contains nothing but furniture, secret passageways filled with dark secrets await you. You must solve a variety of puzzles and, ultimately, the bigger mystery itself. Oh, and you’re not alone in that house. Good luck!

Specter

Those who have played ghosting hunting games, including Phasmophobia, will be home in Specter. This horror game is literally based on becoming a ghost hunter. Played solo or with friends, you start out in a van and outside a location you choose. This can range from abandoned forests to luxury homes.

Armed with a limited quantity of items that you have to prioritize, you must venture inside the location and look for the ghost. Like its AAA counterpart, Specter gives its ghosts names and is not afraid to scare the life out of you. As the player walks through the map, lights go out, doors creak, and the occasional laughter makes it even more terrifying. So for the ones who aren’t afraid to brave through the paranormal, check out Specter as one of the best scary Roblox games. And if you want even more variety, check out its successor Specter 2 on Roblox.

The Mimic

The Mimic is one of the most terrifying horror Roblox games we have come across. Featuring either single-player or multiplayer, the game is a horror adventure created across different chapters. The Mimic has been created from four different stories of Japanese history and urban legends with a twist.

multiplayer, xbox, horror, games

Disguised as four different books, each chapter will take you and your friends to mysterious worlds chock full of extremely scary level designs, loud noises that come out of nowhere, and a lot of jumpscares. While you can play this Roblox horror game alone, we recommend taking a pal along if you don’t want to suffer. Check it out if you want to try one of the most fulfilling Roblox scary games.

Geisha

If you like horror games that have urban legends baked right in, Geisha will serve perfectly for your Roblox adventures. Based on the urban legend of “Teke-Take,” Geisha takes you back to your childhood, although we wager it wasn’t as horrifying as the game will be. Upon returning, you find that your family is nowhere to be found, leaving you confused.

However, you still don’t feel alone. Like there is something watching you, visible only from the corner of your eye, but when you look, nothing’s there. This intensely scary Roblox game will have players discovering the eerily silent house and looking for any clues. If an alone horror Roblox adventure is what you’re looking for, you’ll find it in Geisha.

Finders Keepers

Finders Keepers is another awesome title on this list of Roblox scary games, and it will make you work for the scares. You are once again an investigator, although this time, your specialty is the paranormal world. Tasked with investigating strange events at a family house, you need to figure out how the family disappeared by solving clues.

These clues will come in the form of various hidden dark rooms and the pursuit of disks that you must gather. However, be careful, as the disks contain a demonic entity that will hunt you down. Full of scary jumpscares and scary sounds, Finders Keepers is an amazing horror mystery game.

Grandma

Grandma is one of those scary Roblox games that, while recent, are extremely popular and even more terrifying. The game doesn’t give you too much backstory or hints and instead just drops you inside Granmda’s mansion. As the player, you are tasked with exploring her home, examining her surroundings, and finding out where she’s gone.

However, the illusion of a normal home is soon shattered as you realize that everything from the paintings to the carpet itself is streaked with a dark side. While you only get a candle at the start, your inventory is adaptable and changes depending on your requirement at the time. Go through Grandma’s house and let us know if you find her.

Apeirophobia

The word Apeirophobia itself stands for a phobia of infinity, and I find the game aptly named for the same. The game is built around exploration and going through the process of finding a way out. Besides its name, another distinct thing that is going for this scary Roblox game is the movement mechanism. While Roblox characters typically walk in the same fashion, the main character has a more human run to him.

This makes Apeirophobia all the more relatable as you run down the infinite hallways while managing your stamina. As is with some other horror Roblox games, there are malicious entities watching and chasing you from every corner. The only way out is through, and that will only happen by solving puzzles, hiding, and running when the time is right.

The Maze

Fair warning with this scary Roblox, you might feel claustrophobic while playing the game, and that means it’s working. Much like the name, the game locks you in an underground maze that you must get out of. All you have for help is a flashlight with a limited battery and a camera.

The Maze is a Roblox horror game you can play with up to 12 players if you want. So if you’re scared of traversing it alone, take a friend or two along. However, still, be cautious since this never-ending puzzle contains creatures of unknown origins that are out to hunt you down. Enjoy this team-based horror game in Roblox.

Survive the Killer!

If you’ve played games like Friday the 13th, you already know what Survive the Killer is about. This popular Roblox horror game gives players the option to become either survivors or killers. As a Survivor, you must run and hide from the killer that is out to get you and your friends. You can either hide alone or party up with friends and escape together.

The Killer must eliminate as many players as they can before the victims can escape or the time runs out. One of the most played Robox Games in 2023, Survive the Killer, is a scary yet exciting adventure you and your friends can take for fun. Check it out

Zombie Attack

No horror game list is complete without Zombies, and you’ll love knowing that Roblox has a few of them too. Zombie Attack is a wave-based zombie shooting Robox game where you and your friends can team up together.

As part of the survivors, you must fight and take out as many waves as possible. Along the way, you get access to new weapons and lethal combat to take them out. However, progression also unlocks rare zombies and even the big Zombie boss that you must take down to earn more rewards. Packed with guns and gore, Zombie Attack is a classic horror shooter in Roblox that you can play with your friends.

Stop it, Slender!

This scary Roblox game is another one that is based on a popular urban legend. Focusing on the horrific Slender Man, this horror game in Roblox tasks citizens (players) with finding all the eight hidden pages that have been scattered around the area. However, you’re not alone, as the Slender Man himself is after you acting like a ticking time bomb.

Featuring a creepy atmosphere along with your flashlight that tends to flicker, Stop it Slender adapts the urban legend quite nicely in Roblox. Get this game if you want to relieve Slender Man while being absolutely terrified in Roblox.

The Mirror

One of my biggest fears in the horror genre is Mirrors and the scary possibilities they present. The Mirror is based on that exact phenomenon and takes place in an underground place full of mirrors. As the player, you must navigate through the place and discover these various mirrors.

However, the mirrors hide much more than just your reflection. The Mirror is a Roblox horror game that is full of jumpscares at any turn and creepy noises all around. While you can play this horror game with friends, the best experience will be enjoyed alone if you want to scare yourself the most.

Scary Roblox Games You Should Play With Your Friends

The Haunted Imperial Hotel

Featuring an abandoned hotel that was closed down due to multiple deaths caused by a collapse, the Imperial Hotel game is a Roblox horror that packs intense, mysterious vibes. Based on exploration mechanics combined with horror, this Roblox game lets you explore a supposedly haunted hotel that is full of unexplained mysteries.

As the explorer, you must navigate through the building while dodging enemies and clearing traps. This scary Roblox game packs a lot of horror along with jumpscares. And if you feel alone, you can always play multiplayer and invite your friends too.

Identity Fraud

Identity fraud is one of the Roblox games that give out little to no information. All you know is that the game begins with a conversion between a seemingly mentally ill person and their doctor. However, the former is convinced that the doctor, along with everyone else, is out to get him. Before more can be said, hell breaks loose, and with it, so does this patient.

What follows is a rat and mouse-chase between the patient and the authorities. However, adding to that are mysterious entities that are chasing you down and trying to eliminate you. A riveting story combined with a creepy atmosphere and eerie sound effects makes Identity Fraud one of the best scary Roblox games.

Murder Mystery 2

This multiplayer Roblox horror game will be loved by Trouble in Terrorist Town players and Among Us fans. Featuring the same mechanics but on a scary map, Murder Mystery 2 divides the players into three different teams – Innocents, Sherrif, and Murderer. As the Innocents on the team, you must run and hide from the murderer while trying to work out who it can be.

The Sherrif on the team has to work with innocents who must take out the murderer as they are the only ones with a weapon. The murderer must simply eliminate everyone. Murder Mystery 2 is a scary Roblox game that deserves a place in the best games like Among Us.

Bear (ALPHA)

Bear is one of the top scary Roblox games in which you might require teamwork to win. This 10-player survival horror game puts Roblox players on a common map. Out of the 10 players, one is Bear, who is tasked with hunting and eliminating everyone. However, the rest of the players are not helpless.

The game gives survivors access to multiple weapons which they can use to fight back Bear. While you just might survive Bear alone, you will need the help of your teammates to take it down and win the game. Does your team have what it takes?

SCP: Roleplay

Short for Secure, Contain and Protect, this Roblox horror game has an interesting story and roleplaying elements mixed into it. As part of the SCP world, the government funds the SCP foundation, which is in charge of protecting the world from various anomalous creatures.

Players in SCP will get the chance to roleplay the various SCP characters involved in the plot, including a Class-D SCP, a scientist, a security guard, and many more. If you’ve always been interested in the world of SCP, now is the time to try it out in the Roblox world.

DOORS

Instead of focusing on a single game, Doors itself is an interactive experience that dives into various scenarios. Doors is an ambitious mix of puzzle-solving mechanics along with survival horror. The players start out in a hotel lobby with elevators all around them. Each elevator leads to a different floor, i.e., a map with its own maze of design. The maps host various puzzles that you need to solve to escape.

However, Doors also plagues these maps with different creatures that each have their own abilities. Alone with these anomalies, you must figure out how exactly to avoid them if you want to make it out alive. However, don’t fret if you don’t end up making it. As Doors teaches players, each death has something to teach the players about the monsters. So if you’re someone who wanted an expansive scary game on Roblox, Doors is one of them.

Happy Oofday! (ALPHA)

The new Happy Oofday! is a remaster of the 2018 original that scared the Roblox community into playing it. The new revamped Oofday is a single-player oof-themed horror Roblox game that has been divided into various chapters.

The released Chapter One of Oofday focuses on a birthday party. Your friends have invited you to an abandoned yellow house to celebrate your birthday. However, none of you know that the house is haunted by oof, a yellow-looking malicious spirit. Featuring multiple endings that can take you anywhere, Happy Oofday is a funny-sounding yet horrifying game in Roblox.

The Rake REMASTERED

The Rake is a horror game in Roblox inspired by a creepypasta character of the same name. This massively played survival horror game puts you on a map with The Rake, a grey humanoid creepypasta character who is not friendly at all.

Based on several places and spreading across different modes, you must survive against the Rake while trying to maintain your sanity. This is one of the best Roblox scary games that you must try.

Insane Elevator

This Roblox horror game is one that turns down the scares a little and so can be played by players of all ages. Insane Elevator makes players get in an elevator for a chance to win various rewards. However, with you are also various killers based on different movies and games, including Pennywise the Clown, Sired Head, and even the Rake.

As the player, you must survive through multiple levels and finish challenges. This is also a multiplayer Roblox horror game, so you can invite your friends and all be cramped in the same Insane Elevator if you wish.

The Asylum

The Asylum is a scary Roblox game made by Eagle Studios, an independent company specializing in horror Roblox games. Divided into various chapters, The Asylum makes players explorers as they roam around this abandoned horrific institution and look to solve the mystery.

While chapter one will make you explore the asylum, chapter two takes you to another scary compound just beside it. Try out this scary Roblox game if you dare.

It Lurks

You don’t need to go far into asylums to find yourself in horrific situations. It Lurks is a single-player scary game on Roblox that begins right at home. You see the map through a child’s perspective who has been told to go to bed. However, as soon as he does, he finds himself in a house abandoned by his parents and brother. However, he isn’t exactly alone.

As the only human in the house, you have to explore it while running and hiding from an unknown entity that is chasing you down. The game has been divided into chapters that make the experience scarier the deeper you progress into the story. The game contains a good amount of jumpscares, so be sure you can handle them before you dive in.

Breaking Point

This popular R0blox horror game was banned at one point for being too scary but is now back and stronger than ever. Breaking Point is a murder mystery multiplayer game that seats various Roblox players around a single table to commence a game.

The players all have one objective, eliminate everyone else. The players do this by taking turns and using weapons. Breaking Point also features multiple game modes, including ‘Who Did It’ in which a player is selected as the Murderer, and others have to guess who it is. Try Breaking Point if you’re looking for a good and scary multiplayer Roblox game.

Piggy

Ending things on a creepy note, Piggy is yet another eerie, scary game you can get on Roblox. Piggy incorporates puzzle solving along with horror, so you’re not only scared but also confused. To win Piggy, you can solve puzzles while evading the villain, which is, you guessed it, Piggy.

Clocking over 11.8 billion player visits, Piggy is one of the most played and ever-expanding games that are regularly updated. The game series has been divided into books and chapters. At this time of writing this, Piggy is in Book 2, Chapter 11. Check out the latest Piggy scary horror games on Roblox and have fun.

Project Lazarus: Zombies

While scary games on Roblox mostly include running and hiding but that doesn’t mean you can’t fight back. Project Lazarus is a survival shooter that, instead of hiding, arms players with deadly weapons. As the player, you find yourself smack dab in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. The game includes multiple maps where players see themselves cooperating with other gamers to kill zombies using their weapons.

You can go around the map setting up barricades that delay the zombie onslaught. While ammo is limited, players can buy armaments scattered throughout the map using points they gain. However, even your weapons might not be enough when the horde comes calling. Project Lazarus’s zombie horror, combined with its intense ammo management, makes this game of the best scary games on Roblox.

A Wolf or Other

Continuing the predator streak is A Wolf or Other, a scary game on Roblox that literally makes you a wolf. Based on a game scenario like Survive the Killer, the game is team-based and puts all the players on a big-scale map. Out of all the players, one is made the wolf. As the creature, it’s your job to track everyone down and eliminate them.

The innocent survivors have to do everything in their power to run and hide from the wolf. Unfortunately, the wolf can run faster and is generally more agile, making this very difficult. However, it’s up to the survivors to figure out how they can fool the creature. If you do find yourself as the wolf, then roam about the map swinging your claws every which way as you relish your victim’s screams.

Blair

When it comes to popularising the horror genre in recent days, the game Phasmophobia deserves major appreciation. Taking inspiration from that, we have Blair on Roblox. It offers us a multiplayer experience where you have to explore different maps and identify various types of ghosts.

The game has 6 different types of evidence, and you have to test all of them until you have identified the ghost. While you try to identify the ghost, the ghost, in turn, tries to eliminate your team – one player at a time. If you are looking for a fun game night experience to enjoy with a small group of friends, Blair is a great scary Roblox game.

The Darkness Beyond

Most scary games rely on the terrifying looks of the monsters to scare players. But what if you didn’t know what was after you? This Roblox game relies on the fear of darkness to scare players. You can play it in single-player mode or with your friends for higher stakes.

The main objective here is to prevent the horrifying creature of darkness from entering your house. You can lock doors and bar Windows and use cameras to prevent the thing from reaching you. But if you fail to prevent the penetration, then the game might end up becoming source of your nightmares.

Judy

If you are looking for a good plot combined with creepy monsters, Judy is a great Roblox game that will haunt you at night. It begins innocently as a multiplayer investigative game where you and your friends have to explore a theme park from the 70s. But as mysteries start unfolding, you are exposed to the disappearance of Judy.

multiplayer, xbox, horror, games

Then you have to explore Judy’s manor and try to find Judy in the game’s second chapter. But the path is filled with terrifying jump scares and lurking monsters. Assuming that you somehow survive that, the final chapter of Judy involves an intense boss fight at the ocean. This is one of the best scary Roblox games and offers a complete plot-based experience that is genuinely interesting and not made up of flashy monsters.

Three Nightmares

As its name tells, the Three Nightmares allows us to experience three unique horror stories within a single game. Each story is based on different locations, and all of them revolve around finding objects. The catch here is that there is almost no source of light except for the torch in your hand that you have to use to explore each map.

But each map here also has its own “nightmare” monster lurking in the dark only for you to step into its reach. Packed with creepy noises, familiar places, and very unexpected jump scares, the Three Nightmares is sure to give you one nightmare tonight.

Midnight Horrors

If exploring all of the scary horror games on our list feels like a tiring task, just go for Midnight Horrors on Roblox. It offers 450 unique monsters who can ensure you don’t go for any other horror game anytime soon. From aliens ready to abduct you to Slender Man lurking in the woods, this game has fuel for all types of terrors.

If, somehow, hundreds of scary creatures aren’t enough for you, the game also offers unique maps catering to each monster. So, it’s not only the creepy characters but also their environment that you have to defeat. As the developers describe it, Midnight Horrors is absolute chaos. But if you want to experience true horror, it’s a dreamland for you.

Rainbow Friends

Few game makers put the effort of actually including small cinematics into their games. Rainbow Friends is one scary game on Roblox that actually includes them. As the player, you’re a student going on a field trip. However, what is supposed to be a simple experience turns horrifying quickly when your bus crashes into an unknown place. Therein you find the Rainbow Friends.

The Rainbow Friends are a twisted concoction of creatures that were supposed to be joyful but are anything but. Each chapter includes its own friend who has different abilities. As the survivor, you’re given a cardboard box to hide in should the blue friend see you. However, green soon joins the party, and while it might be blind, it can hear you. Rainbow Friends is a scary game on Roblox that keeps you on edge all the time.

Evade

We end the list with a Roblox game that, while scary, is also quite funny. This team-based game takes place on a huge map with all sorts of hiding spots and sneaky corners. True to its name, Evade is a game focused on well, evading a wide list of monsters who chase you around the map.

However, what’s funny is that these monsters can be created through various characters. This resulted in me being chased by popular memes, including Nyancat, Among Us guy, and even the Troll meme guy. While it was definitely funny, it was also scary as they appeared out of nowhere. So the next time you want to get scared and laugh at once, check out Evade.

Read on below for our list of the best horror games on Xbox Game Pass. It’s scary how we always have some good recommendations, isn’t it?

Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight is an online multiplayer game that feels like you’re actually in a horror movie. In it, one player is a slasher up against four survivors. You have to find and kill the four survivors when playing as the slasher, or survive long enough to win as a survivor.

It’s a fun game with some genuinely tense moments when playing as either slasher or victim. Now get out there and survive the night.

Alien Isolation

After Aliens: Colonial Marines came out and disappointed almost every gamer on the planet who had been looking forward to playing it, many thought we would never see a genuinely great game from the hit franchise. that one didn’t even do justice to AvP Requiem let alone the original Alien movie.

like this

Thank goodness for Alien Isolation then, a game that harkens back to the catastrophic feel of the 1979 film and sees you working your way around a deserted space station while an alien hunts you down. Stealth and staying quiet is key in this game and while the scares do calm down after a while, it remains a tense and nerve-wracking game to play.

A Plague Tale: Requiem

This sequel is something of a masterpiece that’s as horrific as it is breathtaking. It’s a brutal tale of a young boy, a young girl and millions of rats that isn’t to be missed.

The first A Plague Tale was good, but Requiem is even better and is definitely worth a download and play if you like your horror swarming with rats and the brutal realities of medieval Europe.

Dead Space

We will always remember our first time playing the original Dead Space and assuming that the game would ease us in gently before the terrifying carnage began to unfold. We were wrong. The frights start with a heart-pounding chase sequence almost immediately after you gain control of Isaac and it rarely lets up from that point onwards.

This a genuinely chilling game with numerous moments that shocked us and the same can be said for all three games in the franchise. And they are all available now as part of Games Pass thanks to the recent addition of all the EA Play titles to the catalogue.

Doom Eternal

If you love horror but you prefer it with a huge dose of gore and carnage then the Doom franchise will likely be right up your street. with the latest game, Doom Eternal, proving to be a hit with gamers and a game that we keep finding ourselves drawn back to.

In this one, you are on a mission to end Hell’s consumption of Earth and foil the alien Maykr’s plans to exterminate humanity. So the stakes and the scares are high, and the gore and ultra-violence are even higher. There are several Doom games on Games Pass now that range from this one to Doom 64!

The Evil Within

If survival horror is your thing then you will definitely want to spend some time with The Evil Within, a game that follows the adventures of Sebastian Castellanos. someone who gets caught up in a distorted world that is filled with horrific creatures who do not wish good things upon the player.

The horror elements of the game were highly praised when the game was released and it is every bit as scary as you would have been led to believe. Get through the first and you’ll get to do it all over again with the sequel too. which is also available to play on Game Pass.

By entering your details, you are agreeing to our terms and conditions and privacy policy. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Prey

Prey, released in 2017, takes place in an alternate timeline where humans have made their way into space and gone a lot further than we have in the real world. But the game does make a case for us sticking to Earth’s soil as humanity is up against the Typhon. a race of aliens with great powers that include shapeshifting into inanimate objects. which means we need to be wary of almost everything in the game.

While Prey is not quite as scary as some of the other games on the list, and it would be a great game to play if you wanted to nervously enter the horror gaming world for the first time, it remains a tense experience throughout and it fully deserves all the praise it got upon release.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead

This is a very different game from the others on the list as Telltale made games that were more a click and point type adventure than a game where you spend a lot of time in the action. Its key selling point is the story and it is one that will draw you in and have you feeling way more invested in the characters than you were expecting.

Lee and Clem are two great leads and they are backed up by a whole host of characters. some you can trust, and some you should be wary of. And all this is going on in the midst of the zombie apocalypse and many people you will grow to love will not make it out alive.

As of writing, you can play all of Telltale’s The Walking Dead on Xbox Game Pass. They are all worth playing if you want to experience the complete story.

Quantum Break

Developer: Remedy Entertainment Genre: Action Game Pass: Yes

It might’ve overextended a bit with its experimental TV tie-in elements, but Quantum Break from Remedy Entertainment (makers of Max Payne and Alan Wake) has moments where its mix of third-person shooting and temporal powers really soars. As Jack Joyce (played by Shawn Ashmore, the lead in a relatively star-studded cast), you’ve stumbled into time-manipulating godhood and must use your newfound superpowers to wipe out waves of armed goons and prevent the cataclysmic End of Time. It’s worth playing Quantum Break just for those moments when you’ve trapped enemies in a prism-like stasis bubble, peppered them with soon-to-be-unfrozen bullets, then warp-dashed over to another baddie for a melee takedown, all in the span of a few seconds.

You can’t really say you’ve owned an Xbox unless you’ve played at least one Halo game. Not only does it include Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4, but also optionally remasters the earlier games so you can enjoy them as they were originally created, or in a spruced up high fidelity version. There’s even multiplayer although that had a rocky start and, a few years down the line, isn’t as busy as it used to be. No, the main draw here is the chance to play through four of the Xbox’s most formative games in their best possible versions. the early games are remade with improved graphics, there are frame rate boosts, re-done hi-res cutscenes and more. Everything’s brought up to a modern standard, remastering and reinvigorating the classics.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Both games are worth playing, but Moon Studios’ latest action-platformer improves on the original in every way, from its fluid platforming to its gorgeous world to its heart-breaking story. It’s more inventive, more challenging, and thanks to its totally revamped combat and RPG-lite customization systems, much more involved. It’s among the best-feeling 2D platformers ever made, it’s one of the finest Metroidvania games of this generation, and it’s the perfect send-off to one of the most touching stories available on Xbox One.

Its attempts at edgy humor constantly fall flat, but the sheer fun and freedom of grinding, flipping, and air-dashing around Sunset Overdrive’s urban playground make it well worth a go.

Not only does this feel like the most vital Halo since 2010’s Halo Reach, but the addition of the grapple hook gives Chief a pleasing maneuverability that made firefights even more satisfyingly chaotic. The best horror games for Playstation, Xbox and PC

Ever since Resident Evil opened the door to its horror house in 1996, we’ve willingly taken on survival games that put our underpants at risk.

With the nights growing longer and the darkness creeping in, now is the perfect time to settle in with some of the scariest games out there – with nothing betweeen you and a Cabin In The Woods-worth of monsters, ghouls and ghosts, apart from a controller, mouse or keyboard.

Just make sure to give your neighbours a heads-up about the screams.

Additional words by Tom Morgan

Resident Evil Village

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

It’s hard to be scared of anything that you can easily blast to death with a load of bullets. That’s why Outlast 2 strips you of any weapons, and only provides you with a night-vision video camera to find your way around. If only you’d eaten your carrots as a child.

This more intense sequel pushes beyond the frights of its predecessor, giving you an experience that’s high on tension and even higher on the scare factor. Whether you’re running from imminent death or slowly exploring the spooky environment, this first person fright-fest will surely pile on those jitters.

You can buy it together with the original game and the Outlast Whistleblower DLC below.

The Evil Within 2

multiplayer, xbox, horror, games

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Ripped straight from the twisted mind of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, The Evil Within was a dark, demented trip through a virtual reality world – only that reality had been warped by the mind of a serial killer. Think demons, zombies and lots of barbed wire – not a pretty sight. And the sequel is scarier.

It builds on the genre, giving you more freedom and creativity while still finding ways to keep you on edge. Finding a perfect balance between creative open spaces and more claustrophobic close quarters, it ratchets up the tension and doesn’t give you time to breathe. Don’t waste those shotgun shells – you’re gonna need ’em.

Prey (2017)

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

The suffocating atmosphere of space is perfect fear fodder – especially when the colossal orbital station you’re working on is now home to inky-hued, shape-shifting aliens that leap out at you from places you wouldn’t expect. Prey‘s mimics are Smart, experts at camouflage and desperate to introduce their tentacles to your esophagus.

When you’re not fighting off extraterrestrial horrors, an eerie tension permeates every corner and hallway, with a strange, crackling sound design that does a superb job of setting your mind on edge. One to play with headphones, definitely.

Friday the 13th: The Game

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

While it’s true that this game has more bugs than Jason has corpses in his cabin, Friday the 13th is absolutely still worth playing. This online multiplayer scare-’em-up either puts you in the shaking boots of a screaming teenager trying to escape the masked killer, or Jason himself on a good old murder spree.

The fact you’re being hunted by another player, and not some faceless AI makes things all the more scarier – especially as Jason can’t be stopped, only slowed down. If he gets too close, your weak teenage bones don’t stand a hope in hell.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

Resident Evil 7 shakes up the long-running survival horror franchise by switching to a first-person perspective, while returning to its roots with a slower pace and emphasis on scares, instead of shooting. It works, too, as you learn to make every bullet count and worry about what’s hiding around every corner.

One of the scariest games in recent memory is also one of the best games out right now that you can fully play in virtual reality – with a Playstation VR headset, you’ll be able to get get scarily up close with the deranged Baker family. You’ll never complain about your real-life family dinners again.

State of Decay 2

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

By far the best Alien game so far, Isolation is basically just hide and seek. The only difference? Being found doesn’t mean you become the seeker; instead, you get a xenomorph’s tongue shoved down your throat. At least buy us a drink first, you creep.

It’s a few years old now, but Isolation’s timeless 80’s sci-fi style hasn’t aged a bit. That alien has wildly unpredictable AI, too, so no two games are ever the same – making this perfect for repeat plays.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Platform: PlayStation 4, PC

For a game about mental illness, you’d best believe Hellblade knows a thing or two about making you doubt your sanity. We’re not talking Eternal Darkness-style memory card corruptions or fake death screens, either.

Senua’s Sacrifice makes use of a number of tricks to perpetuate the feelings of dread, anxiety, and fear associated with the condition – from cunning camera perspectives and terrifying visuals, to frightening binaural audio. A captivating psychological terror from beginning to end.

Until Dawn

Platform: PlayStation 4

When the blonde girl gets stabbed in a horror film, we’re all too quick to criticise her ‘stupid’ decisions. Don’t open the door!, Don’t go swimming in the lake after dark!, or Don’t eat the cupcake contaminated with haunted zombie bacteria! – you get the idea.

Until Dawn puts your scary movie survival skills to the test to see if you’d truly fare any better. If you can resist getting the annoying sidekick characters killed off on purpose, that is…

SOMA

Platform: PlayStation 4, PC

Anyone who’s seen Jaws can testify that the ocean can be a terrifying place, which is exactly why the team behind Amnesia thought it’d be nice to trap you in an underwater research facility in SOMA.

It isn’t just about the jump scares, though. It’s the story that will terrify you, with organic, H.R. Giger-esque contraptions, creatures and craziness waiting for you around nearly every corner.

Slender: The Arrival

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC Slender Man is the super creepy result of a message board (seriously) that somehow spiraled into a bit of modern folklore: the lanky, blank-faced, suit-wearing pursuer appears and attacks as your delusions begin. Unsurprisingly, it’s a perfect fit for a video game, as you explore an abandoned house and the surrounding woods… and ohhhhh god there’s Slender Man, run! It can be slow in between, but the startling moments are a fabulous payoff.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent A Machine for Pigs

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox, Switch We’re giving this one a combined series recommendation, because collectively, these are two of the most twisted horror games there have ever been. Both are big on psychological scares amidst the first-person puzzling, as you dip in and out of sanity, but also have their share of gruesome sights and really unsettling plot points. You can also play these as a bundle on Playstation 4, Xbox One, or Switch.
