How to enable Virtualization Technology in BIOS. How to enable hardware virtualization in BIOS

Install Android applications on PC and laptop through the BlueStacks emulator

The term “virtualization” today is definitely in fashion. it is constantly consumed by people who are at least a little familiar with the computer environment. But not everyone knows its meaning, and not everyone imagines the true potential of this advanced technology.

Virtualization, in the simplest language, is a computer in a computer. Its use allows you to create a virtual working environment. a kind of isolated “sandbox”, the processes in which will not affect the resources of your own work machine. Using virtualization, for example, you can run several versions of one operating system at once-it is convenient for those who appreciate retro games or often use obsolete, but useful and functional applications, incompatible and relevant version of Windows.

An additional plus. the processes, as we have already noted a little earlier, are separate in this “sandbox”, which means that the probability of bringing a virus or other malicious in tend to zero to the computer.

It is worth, however, to note that almost any modern technology has its own nuances and “pitfalls”. In our case, they include the capabilities of processors. not all of them are able to work with virtualization.

How to understand if my processor supports virtualization?

It is impossible to do this with your own means of the operating system, the only option is to install third.party utilities. But first you need to decide which processor is installed in your computer or laptop.

Run the task manager. The “classic” method is to simultaneously stick the Ctrl Alt Delete keys. Also, in the tenth version of Windows, the dispatcher can be opened through the control panel. for this, right.click on the “Start” icon and in the menu that appears, select the corresponding item.

In the task dispatcher, go to the “performance” tab and click on the line “CPU (central processor”). The model of your processor will be indicated in the right upper side of the window.

For Intel model processors: download a utility from the official website of the manufacturer called Intel Processor Identification Utility. Install it and run it. In the window opened, find the CPU Technologies tab. If the word “yes” is indicated on the contrary of the model of your processor or the name of a particular technology is written, congratulations. your computer supports visualization.

For AMD processors, the whole procedure occurs in a similar way-with the only exception that the program for determining the configuration is called AMD-V. To download it, of course, also needs to be from the manufacturer’s website. AMD.

How to enable virtualization on the Intel processor

Below is a detailed instruction, following which you can easily enable the required parameter, provided that the device has an Intel processor.

  • Go to the BIOS using the F2-F12 or Delete keys (depending on the version of the Inte Wee).
  • Open the “Advanced” section. In some cases, it may have the name “Integrated Peripherals”.
  • Go to the CPU Configuration block, and find the inscription “Intel Virtualization Technology”. If you do not see such a item, then the device does not support the desired parameter.
  • Change the value opposite the found title for Enable, then click on the Enter key. Management is carried out using arrows.
  • Close the BIOS by clicking on the “Save Exit” item. In some versions of the integse, you can use the F10 key for this.

How to enable virtualization on the AMD processor

Actions for AMD are practically no different from the method described above. Let’s look at them in more detail:

  • Go to BIOS, then open the Advanced unit.
  • Click on the section “CPU Configuration” and find the item “SVM Mode”. Near it should be the value of “Enable” or “Auto”. In any other case, the settings of the parameter will need to be changed.
  • Further actions are identical to the previous instruction.

Turning on the virtualization parameter through BIOS is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. First of all, it is necessary to follow a step.by.step method and not forget that the integration points in different versions of BIOS may have different names. If your computer does not have the necessary function, do not even try to activate it with any software, as this can lead to negative consequences for the computer.

Enable hardware virtualization VT-X / AMD-V in BIOS or UEFI

Virtualization and containering applications, such as VirtualBox and Docker, require the inclusion of hardware virtualization. This applies to VT-X on Intel and AMD-V on AMD motherboards. On the AMD AMD-V motherboards is included by default. However, on the Intel motherboards, you can manually enable VT-X from BIOS / UEFI. In addition, there are some motherboards that are blocked and will not allow you to turn on VT-X / AMD-V, in which case you are not lucky. Without unnecessary words, let’s look at how to enable the hardware virtualization of Intel VT-X in the BIOS or built-in UEFI software so that Docker can be launched by virtual machines or containers.

Turn on hardware virtualization

If the virtualization of equipment is not included in your UEFI or BIOS, you can see one or more of the following errors:

If you are faced with this problem, read on to enable hardware acceleration in BIOS or UEFI.

Step 1a. Download the BIOS settings on a computer excellent from UEFI

Firstly, if you have a BIOS firmware, you will see the boot parameters in the BIOS displayed during loading. This is usually displayed during the first few second loading seconds. ESC, DEL, F2, F11 and T.D some of the typical keys that will transfer you to the BIOS settings. The actual key depends on your motherboard. If this applies to you, then you can get the BIOS settings is much easier than if you had UEFI firmware. Download the BIOS settings and go to step 2 to enable Intel VT-X to virtualize. If this does not apply to you (you have a UEFI computer), try Step 1b instead.

Step 1b. Boot in the BIOS settings on UEFI computer

Most modern computers with Windows (Windows 8 and 10) are supplied with UEFI, which has several expanded functions. But it loads your computer so fast, and there are no options to intervene and make your computer load in BIOS. But do not be afraid, the process is still simple.

First hold the Shift key and press the reboot from the menu, as shown in the figure below.

SHIFT Reloading key. Windows loading with UEFI settings

During the reboot, you will see several loading parameters, as shown in the screenshot below. Select “Elimination of problems”.

On the next screen, select “Additional Parameters”, as shown below.

In the list of “additional parameters”, find and select “UEFI firmware settings”, as shown in the figure below.

When a request appears, press the reboot button to go to UEFI firmware settings.

Restart in the UEFI FIMware settings

Now you should see BIOS loading parameters, as shown below. In this guide, pressing the F10 key will lead me to the BIOS setting.

Enter BIOS Setup on UEFI computer

Turn on the hardware virtualization of Intel VT-X in the firmware BIOS / UEFI

The location in which you can include VT-X / AMD-V options will depend on the brand of the motherboard. View everything to find virtualization options. In my case, it was in the “System configuration” section. Finding, select and turn on the hardware virtualization, as shown below.

Find and include hardware virtualization VT-X / AMD-V in BIOS

Finally, save and leave the BIOS / UEFI settings as shown below.

Save BIOS UEFI settings and restart

Step 3a. Make sure equipment virtualization is included in Windows

If everything goes well, your VirtualBox or DoCker Engine should start without errors. You can also manually check if the hardware acceleration on the PC with Windows, as described below. Click “Ctrl Alt Del” and select “Task Manager”. Find and select the “Productivity” tab in the task dispatcher to find out the state of virtualization.

Check if hardware virtualization is included

Please note that in my case, the virtualization is installed on on in the figure above.

Step 3b. Make sure equipment virtualization is included in Ubuntu

In Ubuntu, you can check whether Intel VT-X is included using a CPU-Checker package. First install it using the following commands:

Then check the state of hardware acceleration in Ubuntu using the following command:

If hardware virtualization is included, you should see the following conclusion:

We deal with virtualization

And so, for a start, it is worth saying that if you have a relatively new PC, most likely your processor supports hardware virtualization (the so-called Intel VT-X and AMD-V technologies (more details on Wikipedia)).

How to Enable VTx for Legacy Bios Systems

enable, virtualization, technology, bios, hardware

Nevertheless, before dealing with emulators, to “scour” by BIOS and “look” it. it would not hurt to clarify this moment. (over, in the BIOS, the line can be nominally, but in fact. She will be “empty”)

To do this, you need to find out the exact model of your CP. This can be done, for example, using a combination of Winr, and MSINFO32 commands (see. screenshot below).

After, knowing the CPU model, find the specification for it (Google), and see if there is a string line (Intel VT-X and AMD-V) in the section with technologies (instructions).

We check whether it is involved (Windows 10)

Windows 10 is quite simple and quickly find out if virtualization is included. Enough for this:

  • Launch the task dispatcher. CtrLaltDel (or Ctrlshiftesc);
  • Go to the “Productivity / CPO” tab and see the line “Virtualization”;
  • in my example below. it is disabled ! To enable it, you will need to use the BIOS settings.

How to enter BIOS?

To access BIOS, you need to press the key during the boot process. This key is often displayed during the download process with the message “Click F2 to gain access to BIOS”, “Click to enter the setting” or something similar. The general keys that you may need to click include “delete”, “f1”, “f2” and “escape”.

Visit the website of the technical characteristics of the product (ARK.Intel.com). Enter the processor number in the search field located on the right. On the processor product page and in the Advanced Technologies section, check whether Intel virtualization technology is supported.

How to find out if virtualization is included?

Click the right mouse button on the taskbar and select the task manager from the context menu. In the window of the task manager, go to the “performance” tab. Check the information about the CPU, which are displayed by default when opening the “performance” tab. In the section “Information about the processor” on the right side of the screen, check the “Virtualization” section.

Include virtualization in BIOS. Virtualization allows one processor to launch different operating systems at the same time, and this is a necessary condition for the effective work of BlueStacks. After you entered the BIOS settings on your PC, virtualization steps will depend on your processor.

How to find out support for the processor of virtualization technology

The user can use two ways: to independently find out the equipment specification to learn by the processor’s brand about the support for the processor of certain technologies on the official Intel website or on the websites of sellers of computer equipment.

enable, virtualization, technology, bios, hardware

By the type of processor, you need to find supported technologies, among them “Intel (VT-X) virtualization technology”.

Another method: the use of software, for example, in the free Securable program:

  • Download secuurable from the official site.
  • Run the executable application file on PC (the application installation is not required).
  • In the window of the Securable program, a processor brand and three indicators are displayed:
  • Support for the instructions for the set of commands for the corresponding bit (64-bit or 32-bit).
  • DEP support (equipment support to prevent the use of malicious code).
  • Is there any support for hardware virtualization.

The “Hardware Virtualization” parameter displays one of the three values: “Yes” (yes), “No” (no), “Locked OFF” (blocked, disabled). With the first two values, everything is clear, and the Locked OFF parameter indicates that there is support for hardware virtualization, but it is disabled.

Intel has a special Intel Processor Identification Utility application, with which you can learn about the supported technologies of the central processor, which can be downloaded here.

After installing the program on the computer, in the INTEL processing window, open the “CP technology” section, which can be seen, whether various technologies are supported by the processor, including “Intel VT-X Vet-C Technology with Extended Page Tables Tables Technology “”.

Keep in mind that in some cases the flag at the virtualization point of virtualization technology can be removed due to the fact that this PC uses other software with the hypervisor turned on. Check the state of this function in the Windows Tasks Manager.

How to see the state of virtualization in Windows 10

Before performing certain actions, it is necessary to make sure that the virtualization function in the Windows 10 operating system is included. If so, then further actions to launch this technology on PC will not be required.

  • Click with the right mouse button on the taskbar panel.
  • In the context menu, click on the “Task Manager” item.
  • In the “Tasks Dispatch” window, open the “performance” tab.
  • Select the section “CPU” (central processor).
  • Among other data, you will see information about the state of virtualization: “inclusive” or “disabled”.

Factory setting by default. Support is included.

Why hardware virtualization is disabled by default?

Vmm = virtual machine monitor. My assumption: it is disconnected by default, because virtualization with hardware support causes a very high load on CPU, which, in turn, requires much more energy than with normal operation. You can also see a decrease in performance if it always works with a very high load.

If you have a Windows 10 or Windows 8 operating system, the easiest way to check. Open the task dispatcher- tab “Productivity”. You should see virtualization as shown in the screenshot below. If it is turned on, this means that your CPU supports virtualization and is currently included in BIOS.

How safe it is to include virtualization for Bluestacks?

If virtualization is not turned on, BlueStacks cannot do its work on emulating the phone processor. The inclusion of virtualization will not have a negative effect on the computer. It can also accelerate virtualization software, such as VMware or VirtualBox. this is necessary if you want your emulator to work more efficiently.

This is mainly virtualization. By including SVM, you can install a virtual machine on your computer Suppose you want to install Windows XP on your computer without deleting Windows 10. For example, you load VMware, take the ISO-image of the XP and install the OS using this software.
