The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is one of the best smartwatches in Android land. It runs on the latest version of Wear OS and has a good set of features. Despite running Google’s Wear OS, the Galaxy Watch 4 didn’t ship with the Google Assistant.

Finally, after months of waiting, Samsung has rolled out the Google Assitant update for the Galaxy Watch 4. If you have been waiting to use the superior voice assistant on your watch, here’s how you can install and use Google Assistant on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4.

How to Enable Google Assistant on Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

The process of enabling Google Assistant on the Galaxy Watch 4 suggests that a software update did install the app. However, it may have been disabled or not updated. The process to fix it is simple. Here’s what you have to do.

Step 1: Go to the Settings app on your Galaxy Watch 4 and update it to the latest version. You can use the Galaxy Wearable app to do the same.

Step 2: Swipe up from the bottom to access the app tray of your Galaxy Watch 4.

Step 3: Launch the Google Play Store on the watch.

Step 4: Scroll down till you find the My Apps section and tap on it.

Step 5: You should ideally see the Google Assistant app here with a pending update.

Step 6: Select the Update all option to update the Assistant app and you will be able to use it.

While this is straightforward, some users report that they cannot find the Google Assistant in the updates queue. If this is the case with your Galaxy Watch 4 as well, this is what you need to do.

Step 7: From the Play Store app, tap on the search bar to look for the Assistant app.

Step 8: Type in Google Assistant and hit the search button.

Step 9: When the app shows up in the results, hit the Install or Update button.

Your Galaxy Watch 4 will install or update Google Assistant app.

How to Use Google Assistant on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

After installing the app, you can’t use it just like that. You’ll need to set it up. Here’s how to do that and use Google Assistant on your Galaxy Watch 4.

Step 1: Unlock the Galaxy Watch 4 and swipe up from the bottom to access the app tray.

Step 2: Launch the Google Assistant on the watch.

Step 3: Tap on Get started button to initiate the set up.

Step 4: Select the ‘Open on phone to activate’ button. This will continue the setup process on your phone.

Step 5: Unlock your phone and you should have a prompt asking you to allow permission to find nearby devices. Tap on Allow.

Step 6: When asked if you want to activate Google Assistant on the watch via your voice, select Activate.

Step 7: Tap on Continue.

Step 8: If you want the Assistant on the watch to get triggered every time you say Hey Google, select Next.

Step 9: Voice Match is a feature that shows personal results on your watch when communicating with the Google Assistant. If you want to enable it, tap on I agree button and select Turn on button.

Step 10: Finally, tap on Got it and then on Done.

Google Assistant on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is now ready to use. Launch the app or use Hey Google to ask a query.

How to Set Google Assistant as Default on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

After installing and setting up the Google Assistant on your Galaxy Watch 4, you may want to set it as the default voice assistant. It’ll show up whenever press and hold the back button on the side of the watch. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Unlock your Galaxy Watch and swipe from the top to bring up quick toggles. Launch the Settings app.

Step 2: Scroll down to the Advanced features and tap on it.

Step 3: Select the Customise keys option.

Step 4: Tap on Press and hold.

Step 5: Choose Assistant from the list of available options.

The default voice assistant on your Galaxy Watch 4 is Google Assistant instead Bixby.

How To Install And Use Google Assistant On The Galaxy Watch 4

Now that Google Assistant for the Galaxy Watch 4 is finally here, you’re probably going to want to install it. Luckily this guide is here to help with that. Samsung officially launched the Galaxy Watch 4 in 2021 and just prior to launch, it was thought that Google Assistant would be part of the device out of the box.

Google and Samsung later confirmed that wasn’t the case. And thus began the arduous wait for Galaxy Watch 4 owners to gain access to Google’s helpful voice assistant. Now almost a year later, the tool is available for users to download. If you’re eager to swap out Bixby for Google Assistant on your Galaxy Watch 4, this guide will walk you through the steps on how to do so. It’ll also walk you through how to use the feature on your watch.

How to download and install Google Assistant for the Galaxy Watch 4

Naturally, to use Google Assistant on the watch, it needs to be installed first.

Samsung said during its announcement that users would be able to find the app following an update that enables the tool. And sure enough, that’s how it worked out for us. Here’s how you can check to see if you have the assistant installed on device already, or if it needs to be downloaded.

Update your Galaxy Watch 4 to the latest software version

Now that Google Assistant has launched, your watch should have an update available to download. You’ll need to download and install this new software version for the watch before you can do anything else. So go ahead and start the update process. The update should only take a few minutes.

Launch the Play Store on your Galaxy Watch 4

Launch the Play Store app on your Galaxy Watch 4. Then, search for Google Assistant.

Update Google Assistant, or download it

If you don’t already have Google Assistant installed on the watch for whatever reason, hit the install button. If it’s showing an update button instead, update the app.

Tap on the Get Started button

Once the update is complete, there should be a Get Started button that appears on screen. Tap the Get Started button to get everything working.

Open the app your phone

Next, tap the button on the watch screen that says to open the app on your phone. The rest of the setup process will continue on your phone that the watch is connected to. Google Assistant will then open on your phone and you’ll see a button in the bottom right corner of the screen that says Activate.

Tap that, then tap the Next button to move to the next screen. You’ll then need to agree to the Voice Match feature to continue. Once you agree, go through the steps to set up Voice match, which will include saying a phrase or two so Google can set up recognition. After Voice Match recognition finishes, tap the Got It button at the bottom of the screen, then tap the Done button at the bottom of the next screen. And that’s it. Google Assistant is installed.

One thing worth noting is that if you already have Voice match set up prior to all this, you shouldn’t have to go through that step again on the watch. I personally didn’t have to with mine since I configured Voice Match well before this update.

How to use Google Assistant on your Galaxy Watch 4

Now that you have the app updated or installed, there are two ways you can activate it. So, we’ll walk through both activation methods.

Set Google Assistant as the default app

Google Assistant may be installed but it’s not the default assistant app yet. Open up the settings menu, then scroll and look for apps. Inside the apps menu, select and tap Choose Default Apps. Then select Digital Assistant App, and then tap Default App, and choose Google Assistant as the option. It may also be set to default already like it was for me.

Press and hold the power button

Once Google Assistant is installed on the watch and you’ve gone through choosing it as your default option, you can activate it by pressing and holding the power button. This will be one way to activate the Assistant. This also serves as the better method if you’re worried about accidental activations. Which doesn’t happen often but can happen.

You’ll need to set it as your custom home key option first though. Here’s how to do that. Launch settings, then open advanced features. Scroll to find customized keys and you can then set Google Assistant to one of two options. The double press action of the home key, or the press and hold action of the home key. Select one and from then on that action will wake Assistant.

Say the Hey Google wake word

Alternatively, you can say “Hey Google” and this will also wake Google Assistant up. You can then proceed to ask it any questions you wish or issue a command. Keep in mind that if you have other devices nearby that have Google Assistant, the wake word can trigger those devices.

Hey Google, thanks

The waiting is over. You’ve got Google Assistant installed on your Galaxy Watch 4 and you can use it for any number of things. Rejoice in the fact that your device just got a little better. And maybe thank Google and Samsung for finally getting this ready. Even though it did take an obscenely long time in the first place.

If you’re looking for the best smartwatch to pair with your favorite Android phone, it doesn’t get much better than the Galaxy Watch 4 or Watch 4 Classic. This lineup of wearables was released back in August of 2021 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3. But it marked the first smartwatch to launch powered by the newly-redesigned Wear OS 3.

The expectations were that you would finally be able to enjoy the best Google apps and experiences on Samsung’s excellent hardware. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case for those who want to use Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4. Until now, the only digital assistant that has been available on the Watch 4 is Bixby, which isn’t the greatest experience overall.

How To Install Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4

Surprisingly, if you want to install Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4, it really couldn’t be easier. You don’t need to worry about an overall software update for your smartwatch. Instead, Samsung and Google have done much of the leg work in the background, and thanks to server-side updates, you can finally get Google Assistant on your wrist.

Here’s how you can install Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4:

• From your Galaxy Watch 4, swipe up from the bottom.
• Tap the Google Play Store icon.
• At the top of the page, tap the Magnifying Glass button.
• Select one of the input methods, and search for Assistant.
• Once loaded, tap the Google Assistant app listing.
• Tap the Update button.
• Wait for the update to finish installing.

Now that you have installed Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4, there are a few more steps that you need to take.

How To Set Up Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to complete the entire process for setting up Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4 from the watch. Instead, you’ll need a bit of help from your paired smartphone, and we’re here to walk you through the steps.

• Open the Assistant app on your Galaxy Watch 4.
• If you already left the Play Store app listing, just swipe up from the bottom and tap the Assistant icon from the list of installed apps.
• Tap the Get Started button.
• Tap the Open on phone to activate button.
• Unlock your paired phone, and tap the Activate button.
• Tap Next in the bottom right corner.
• Follow the on-screen prompts to set up Voice Match if you agree to the terms.
• Once complete, tap the Gotit button in the bottom right corner.
• Tap Done.

Now that you have taken the steps to install Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4, and set everything up with your phone, you can start asking questions or controlling your Smart home right from your wrist.

How To Set Google Assistant as Default on Galaxy Watch 4

But there’s one more “itch” that needs to be “scratched”, and that’s getting rid of the Bixby shortcut. In some cases, these next steps are already done for you, but if you want to ditch Bixby in favor of Assistant as the default, here’s what you need to do:

• From your Galaxy Watch 4, swipe down to reveal the Quick Settings menu.
• Tap the Settings icon (it looks like a gear).
• Scroll down and tap Apps.
• Tap the Choose default apps button.
• Under Default apps, tap Digital assistant app.
• Tap Default app.
• Scroll down and select Assistant if it’s not already selected.

Now, whenever a request is made from your Galaxy Watch 4 (or smartphone), it will rely on Google Assistant as opposed to Bixby!

How To Customize Keys on Galaxy Watch 4 for Google Assistant

Okay, so Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4 is installed, set up, and set as the default Digital Assistant. We’re done, right? Well, not quite. If you want to quickly use Google Assistant on Galaxy Watch 4 without using your voice, these are the steps you need to follow:

• From your Galaxy Watch 4, swipe down to reveal the Quick Settings menu.
• Tap the Settings icon (it looks like a gear).
• Scroll down and tap Advanced features.
• Scroll down and select Customize keys.
• Under the Home key section, tap Double press or Press and hold.
• Select Assistant from the list of apps.
• Exit the Settings app.

And that’s it! Now, whenever you double-press or press and hold the “Home key” on your Galaxy Watch 4, Assistant will automatically appear. You no longer need to worry about accidentally triggering Assistant on your phone or Smart home speakers by saying the key phrase. Instead, you can just do everything from your wrist!

How to use Google Assistant with Galaxy Watch 4

Google Assistant finally comes to the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic.

Even before Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Watch 4 in August of last year, Wear OS 3 made its debut at Google I/O 2021. Google announced a new partnership with Samsung, which promised an all-new Wear OS experience and that Samsung’s next smartwatch would be the first to debut this new software. During the Galaxy Watch 4s announcement, we learned that Bixby remained the default (and only) digital assistant available at launch, but Google Assistant was on the way.

Almost a year later, and after plenty of teasers and non-announcements, Google Assistant has finally arrived on the Galaxy Watch 4. The smartwatch is not only one of the best smartwatches, but also remains the only current smartwatch available with Wear OS 3. That is expected to change later in 2022, but if you want to use Google Assistant with Galaxy Watch 4, you can finally do so.

How to download Google Assistant to Galaxy Watch 4

As stated during the announcement, activating and using Google Assistant on the Galaxy Watch 4 requires the Assistant app to actually be installed. It seems that Samsung did a bit of preparation leading up to the announcement since the app is likely already installed. But here’s how you can make sure that it’s available and updated on your Galaxy Watch 4:

Open the Google Play Store app on your Galaxy Watch 4.

Search for Google Assistant.

Tap the Play Store listing.

Tap Update.

The update we had to install for Assistant weighed in around 11MB, so you might have to wait a bit for the download to complete, depending on your internet speeds. But once the Assistant app is updated, you’ll be guided through the process for getting everything set up.

Tap the Get Started button on your Galaxy Watch 4.

Tap the Open on phone to activate button.

From your connected phone, tap the Activate button in the bottom right corner.

Tap Next.

From the Voice Match screen, you can either tap the I agree or No thanks buttons.

Follow the on-screen prompts to set up Voice Match if you agreed in the previous step.

Once Voice Match recognition is complete, tap the Got it button in the bottom right corner.

Tap Done.

We’re almost done, but there are a few more steps you need to perform if you actually want to use Google Assistant on your Galaxy Watch 4.

How to use Google Assistant with Galaxy Watch 4

There’s a good chance that the Google Assistant app already set itself as the default digital assistant when you went through the setup process. But if you want to double-check or ever need to go back and re-enable it, here’s how you can do so:

From your Galaxy Watch 4, open the Settings app.

Scroll down and tap Apps.

Tap the Choose default apps button.

Select Digital assistant app.

Tap Default app.

Select Google Assistant if it’s not already selected.

With Google Assistant installed on the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, you also now have the ability to assign it to one of the gestures available for the Home (top) key. This will make it so you can access Assistant without actually using your voice, which can come in handy if you don’t want to trigger your Nest Hub or Assistant on a phone like a Pixel 6.

Open the Settings app on your Galaxy Watch 4.

Scroll down and tap Advanced features.

Scroll down again and select Customize keys.

Under Home key, tap either Double press or Press and hold.

Select Assistant from the list of options.

The power of Assistant, on your wrist

With all of the setup out of the way, you can finally start using Google Assistant with Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic. Just perform the gesture that you assigned to activate Assistant, and start asking it to set some reminders, send a few texts, turn off the lights, and everything else that you already have been doing from your favorite Android phones.
