How to Preserve Photo Filter Settings for the iPhone Camera App

Do you find that a lot of the pictures that you take on your camera will involve the same settings?

But going through and re-selecting those settings each time you want to take a picture can be tedious, so you might be wondering if it’s possible to get your iPhone’s camera app to save those settings.

You can preserve the filter settings on your iPhone by going to Settings Camera Preserve Settings Creative Controls.

While you can certainly take good pictures on your iPhone by using the default camera settings, you might have a preferred aesthetic for the images you capture that requires some adjustments. And constantly needing to make those changes every time you open the Camera app can get old very quickly.

Luckily there is a menu that allows you to control this. One of the settings that you can choose to preserve after you have closed the Camera app is the photo filter that you used.

Our guide below will show you where to find this menu so that you can enable the settings that you would like the app to preserve.

How to Save the Photo Filter Selection on an iPhone 7 (Guide with Pictures)

The steps in this article were performed on an iPhone 7 Plus in iOS 10.3.3.

This tutorial will show you how to preserve the last photo filter that you used in the default Camera app. This means that the same filter will be applied to the camera the next time you open the app after closing it.

Step 2: Scroll down and choose the Photos Camera option.

In newer versions of iOS, you will need to select the Camera option, as Apple has split the Photo and Camera settings into separate menus.

Step 4: Tap the button to the right of Photo Filter to save that setting.

In newer versions of iOS you will need to turn on the Creative Controls option instead. This includes the filter, as well as aspect ratio, light, and depth settings.

If you would like, you can also elect to enable the other options on this screen if you want the Camera app to remember those selections as well.

Our tutorial continues below with additional discussion about saving camera settings on the iPhone.

Information on How to Keep Your Previously Used Settings on the iPhone Camera

As you can see in the picture above, there is more than just an option to preserve the filter when you close the Camera app. You can also preserve these settings:

  • Camera Mode – this means that if you were taking video, for example, then the next time you open the Camera app it will be in video mode, rather than reverting to the default Photo mode.
  • Creative Controls/Photo Filter – as discussed in the article above, this means that the camera will start with the last-used filter the next time you open it. if you are using a newer version of iOS then it will also preserve any changes you have made to the aspect ratio, light, or depth as well.
  • Live Photo – usually Live photo is turned on for pictures, but if you have this setting enabled then it will stay off if you have turned it off.
  • Exposure Adjustment – if you made any changes to the exposure then these can be saved as well.
  • Night Mode – If you changed from the “Auto” setting on Night Moder then that can be saved, too.

On the top-level Camera settings menu, there is also a “grid” setting. If you have that turned on then the grid overlay will stay on the Camera app even when you close it. Some people find the grid to be useful in helping them to create better pictures, so it’s worth giving it a try if you haven’t used it before.

Find your unique style of mobile photography using the best photo filter apps that we’ll cover in this article!

Hey folks! We live in an amazing time when having an ordinary phone in your. you can become not only a professional photographer but even make your own movie! Yeah, the 21st century opens up many opportunities for self-expression, including the creation of visual content. And photo filters play an important role in this matter. Seriously, can you imagine your life today without them? I can’t, that’s why I decided to write this article. Take a look at the list of the best picture filter apps for iOS and Android that can turn your photos into true masterpieces.

How To Use Filter Apps To Make Impressive Photos?

Using filters is a great way to imbue your shots with mood and emotion that your phone’s camera can’t convey. In addition, with the help of filters, you can create a unique style for your Instagram page, which will immediately increase the number of likes and subscriptions. This feature is often used by SMMs, photographers, and bloggers to promote their profiles.

Before we move on to reviewing the best filter apps, I would like to talk a little about how to use filters to create impressive photos.

I already said that filters help to control the mood of the picture, and this is their main advantage. Application developers often name filters according to the mood they add to the photo, such as Drama or Autumn. Use this to express your emotions to the fullest, because a soulless shot will not impress anyone, even if it is technically good.

Unifying photos by applying one filter will allow you to create your own unique style. This works especially well if you create your own best filters for pictures (applications make it easy to do this). But keep in mind that photos taken in different lighting conditions may react differently to the filter, so first test a few shots manually, and only then start batch processing.

Most filters are unobtrusive, but there are some that give your image an overly garish tint. Use this when you want to emphasize the point of a post or just to grab attention. For example, if your post is about a situation that annoys you, feel free to fill the photo in full red and add a loud headline. This will immediately make it clear that something has angered you. If you are in a languid mood, you can use sepia to give your photo an appropriate narrative.

For example, if you want to process selfies, you need some particular functions, and if you shoot streets, you need a completely different set of presets.

Talking about the best filter apps for pictures, we will try to avoid mentioning apps like Canva and other popular tools that you already know about.

A Color Story

Probably the most aesthetically pleasing filter app I’ve ever seen. You can turn your pictures into almost renaissance paintings with just one tap. This is truly the MOST colorful story you can imagine, with over five hundred filters at your disposal! Is there anything else that needs to be added? VSCO

Okay, I admit it. One mainstream app will still be on this list. But it deserves it. VSCO is one of the most popular applications today, so it is one of the best free filter apps. With it, you get access to 130 stylish filters for your wonderful photos. But the main features of the program are a convenient set of presets for your experiments and the ability to shoot directly from VSCO in order to quickly process and publish a photo. It’s the convenience and simplicity that made this app so famous, and it makes sense.

Specifications (Android, iOS)

  • Probably the most user-friendly interface in the history of the best photo filter apps for Android and iPhone.
  • A weighty set of 130 unique filters.
  • Extensive photo editing options.

FixThePhoto App

This an exciting startup for those who are not photographers, but want their pictures to look like the work of a professional. In addition to being one of the best camera filter apps, FixThePhoto also allows you to send your photos to TOP retouchers for retouching. That is, you do not have to choose the right filter for a long time. Just upload your photo, specify the requirements and get amazing results in no time.

The app is free for a trial period. That is, you can test the skills of retouches who will process your pictures. By the way, here you can even select certain areas of the frame that you want to be corrected. Need to make your face look better? Just indicate the places that do not suit you. the result will satisfy you!

For me personally, a huge advantage is that the photos in this one of the best photo filter apps for iPhone are not processed by AI, but by real people who know their stuff. This is almost a 100% guarantee of great photos on your social media profile.

Specifications (Android, iOS)

  • Realistic output image.
  • Processing images by a professional in manual mode.
  • Ability to specify areas for editing.

Retrica

I love film photography. Therefore, the Retrika service is special for me in this list of the best filter apps for Android. The tool allows you to apply more than 190 film filters right at the time of shooting the photo, so you don’t even have to process the picture after. Well, if you still want to play around with the image and create a real masterpiece, the post-processing functions will also be available to you.

From time to time, developers release unique filter sets for premium users, which is very interesting, as some new features will always be available to you. Unfortunately, the application is not free, but the annual subscription is not very expensive. A seven-day trial period is also available.

Specifications (Android, iOS)

  • Over 190 filters are applied in real-time.
  • Tools for post-processing images.
  • Makes your photos look like they were taken 20, 30, or even 100 years ago.

Advanced yet easy-to-use photo editor

StoryChic is one of the most complete story makers for Instagram today. Create quality content with a wide range of templates and other tools.

With the StoryChic app, you can quickly and efficiently edit stories for Instagram. You will have the most stylish and trendy story templates, photo collages, amazing effects, and fonts at your disposal. It’s a complete story design lab to help you grab your audience’s attention and get tons of likes on Instagram.

An intuitive interface and the ability to preview stories make this tool one of the best for creating spectacular stories. The only negative for me personally is that the application automatically adjusts the content to the aspect ratio for stories, that is, it is problematic to use it for other purposes, although it is possible.

filter, iphone, camera, best

I would also like to note probably the most spectacular sharp filter I have ever seen.

Specifications (Android, iOS)

  • Over 500 both static and stunning animated story templates.
  • Huge selection of filters and fonts, as well as photo frames.
  • Ability to create collages from photos and videos.
  • The function of previewing the created Instagram post and convenient story scheduling.
  • Stunning effects to make your stories stand out.

Darkroom

One of the best free filter apps, that’s for sure! Like Retrico, this application allows you to apply a filter in real time. All filters here are divided into categories for the convenience of finding the right one. As with many other programs, the intensity of the effect can be adjusted.

The peculiarity of this tool is that one filter can be applied to several images at once to create a cool collection in just a couple of minutes. The application also allows you to create your own filters and save them for future masterpieces.

However, only 12 filters are available in the free version, while the paid Darkroom app allows you to use 50 filters.

Specifications (Android, iOS)

  • 12 free filters forever.
  • Edit photos in real-time.
  • Batch photo editing.
  • Ability to create your own filter and save it as a preset.
  • Free app.

Polarr

Does the name of this app remind you of anything? Oh yeah. Polaroid. It is immediately obvious that the creators of this great program have a passion for retro, especially for the era of instant cameras.

The application contains 150 filters with a retro effect and more. Here you can also create your own filters and (. ) share them with your friends so that everyone can appreciate your creative streak. You can also add various weather effects to your photos, such as snow, dew, rain, etc.

The app is free, but when you buy a paid version, you can also install Polarr on your computer desktop, which is very convenient for working with a large number of photos. It is important to note here that there is no annual subscription, so you will have to pay monthly.

Specifications (Android, iOS)

  • A set of over 150 filters.
  • High-quality imitation of weather conditions.
  • The ability to create your own filters and share them.
  • Desktop version.

Collage maker

An undeservedly neglected app that should still be on this list of the best filter apps for iPhone and Android. As the name implies, Collage Maker was designed primarily to create spectacular collages. But it also has an excellent image editor with many filters, which is not inferior to the same VSCO in its functionality. I use this particular application the most and have never regretted the money that I pay for it annually.

The Collage maker can work in five different modes. These are photo editing, creating a collage using a template, creating a collage without a template, batch editing multiple pictures, and using ready-made photo frames. In each of these options, the user has access to an editor with a set of more than 100 filters and other standard settings (brightness and contrast, graininess, vignette, etc.).

Specifications (Android, iOS)

  • Five operating modes.
  • Over a hundred filters are available in any of the modes.
  • Additional options for editing pictures.
  • A set of unique frames and backgrounds to edit your photos.
  • Available for iPhone and Android smartphones.

Photo Editor Pro

The first and last application on the list is designed only for the Android OS, but it also cannot be ignored because perhaps it is the best camera filter app for Android.

Photo Editor Pro is a humble application that can surprise you by making your photos as good as any professional photographer’s. This app like A Color Story can improve certain areas of photos where your camera’s sensor didn’t have enough power, such as in dark places.

The set of filters built into the program does not surprise you with its variety, but all of them fit your photos as carefully as possible without creating color and light distortions.

You can also add captions to your photo if you like.

Specifications (Android only)

  • Automatic correction of image quality in certain areas.
  • Adding filters without distortion.

Lensa

Lensa is the flagship app for selfies and portrait photography. Lensa filters help to remove skin irregularities, hide wounds and wrinkles, and emphasize the expressiveness and depth of the look.

There are also editing tools for blurring the background and other features to help you make a truly outstanding portrait. For example, you can edit the background and the face separately, resulting in a layered and deep image that will impress your followers.

Of course, the developers did not ignore other areas of photography. There are separate filters and settings for photos of nature, food, animals, etc. However, not everyone is willing to pay for basic features, so if you are a professional blogger who needs to show a lot, Lensa is unlikely to suit you. But if top selfies are your main goal, then this app is definitely for you!

Specifications (Android, iOS)

  • There is the possibility of batch editing.
  • A multifunctional tool for editing portraits and selfies.

Conclusion: How To Choose The Right App

As you can see, different applications have different benefits, so the choice is still difficult. Answer these questions:

  • What is your purpose for using filters?
  • What genre do you shoot in most often?
  • Are you ready to pay for the app?
  • Are you ready to pay monthly?
  • What results do you want to achieve using this or that application?

Finding the best one for you starts right here. It is important to understand that there cannot be a uniquely best filter for photos, since everything depends on the needs of the user. In this article, I talked about those that I myself used and which, it seemed to me, were superior to others. I rate the application on the following parameters:

Which app to use is up to you. And I hope that my recommendations will help you choose the best option.

Filter iPhone camera

I have several excellent cameras, including a Nikon D850.

But my everyday camera is my iPhone, and I know I’m not the only one who defers to my iPhone for day-to-day photo-taking.

iPhones (and other smartphones, too) have really good cameras and functionalities that keep getting better and better with each new phone model that comes out.

And to go along with those great phone cameras is an ever-increasing array of iPhone camera add ons like lenses and filters.

Let’s have a look at iPhone lens filters and explore how they can positively impact your mobile photography.

Your iPhone Lens Deserves an iPhone Filter

I’ve written before about the virtues of using a lens to improve the iPhone camera.

In short, add-on lenses these days are far, far superior to what they used to be. In fact, some companies craft iPhone lenses that have precision engineered glass and multi-element optics like you’d find on a traditional camera lens.

That means that you get sharper, clearer images with no distortion, vignetting, and other artifacts that can ruin your photos.

But guess what? There’s also lens filters for your phone, and that’s excellent news for those of us that primarily shoot with an iPhone.

Introducing the iPhone Drama Polarizing Filter

Photo by @dzzdzz012. After photo shot with SANDMARC Drama Filter iPhone. (Unedited)

SANDMARC has developed a drama polarizing filter and a set of neutral density filters for iPhone to go along with their line of iPhone lenses.

These things do exactly what you’d expect them to do, too.

The drama polarizing filter improves the dynamic range in your iPhone photos, resulting in skies that pop with deeper blues and whiter clouds, as seen above.

Polarizing filters also minimize glare off of non-metallic surfaces like water.

That means that you can actually take a photo and see into the water, giving your images more depth and visual interest.

Polarizers also minimize atmospheric haze, so if you’re photographing a landscape with far-off features like a mountain range, it’ll appear cleaner and more crisp without the interference of haze in the shot.

What’s not to like about that?

Create Cinematic Feeling Photos and Videos with a Neutral Density Filter

Neutral density filters provide several benefits for iPhone shooters, whether you use your phone for still images, videos, or both.

Like the polarizing filter described above, the SANDMARC Scape ND filters improve the dynamic range in your images.

These ND filters accomplish this by preventing blown out highlights.

That’s because ND filters block out light to varying degrees, bringing the highlights down to a manageable level. Recovering detail in highlighted areas gives your photos more depth and visual impact.

And since ND filters block out light, you can use them on sunny days to extend your shutter speed for long exposure photography.

The beautiful blur that can be achieved with even just a few seconds of exposure can turn normal scenes into dreamy, ethereal wonderlands.

In other words, having a set of ND filters for your iPhone expands your capabilities of getting great shots while also allowing you to push your creativity into realms that might otherwise not be possible with an iPhone.

Don’t Skimp on Your Lenses or Filters

I’ve used SANDMARC lenses and filters as examples in this article because they are hands-down the best iPhone lenses and lens filters for your iPhone that I’ve ever used.

filter, iphone, camera, best

The combination of these lenses and filters has dramatically increased the capabilities of my iPhone camera, and my photos have benefitted as such.

As I noted earlier, that’s due in part to the quality of construction and the materials used to make these lenses and filters.

There’s no cheap, plastic housings or low-grade glass here. just high-quality products you’d expect from a high-quality lens.

SANDMARC cut their teeth creating products for GoPro and DJI, and they’ve used that experience to craft the best photography accessories for iPhone that you’ll find today.

Trust me on this. if you want to improve your mobile photography and reduce the amount of time you spend editing your photos, pre-order the drama polarizing filter and the Scape ND filter kit today!

iPhone Photo Editing Tips

Edit Photos on iPhone

Edit Live Photos on iPhone

We live in a world where a normal and natural photo does not get as much traction as an edited one does. It is one of the reasons why most users prefer to add filters to their photos before their photos go live or published on social media. If you are anything like today’s user, you would want to use the iPhone filters for your selfies as well as for all other types of images.

Adding a filter to an iPhone photo is actually pretty easy. The iPhone itself has the option to let you apply various effects to your photos, and if that is not enough for you, you can always hit up the App Store to find apps that help you make your photos more appealing with a ton of filters.

With that said, the following should teach you how you can go about using the iPhone photo effects on your device.

Part 1. How to Add Filters with iPhone Built-in App

There are two scenarios to add filters to your photos. If you have not already captured the photo yet, you can enable the filter option in the Camera app and it will let you take the photo with the filter pre-applied to it.

If you already have your photo saved in the Photos app, you can use the Photos app to apply a filter to your existing photo. Both ultimately do the same thing and give the same result.

Method 1. Add Filters to the New Photos on Your iPhone

If you are looking to capture a photo with your chosen filter applied to it, this shows how to do it.

Step 1. Launch the Camera app from the springboard on your iPhone.

Step 2. If you are on the latest version of iOS, you need to swipe up from the bottom of the app. If you are on an old iOS version, you can directly tap on the filter icon that appears at the top-right corner of your device.

Filter Option in the Camera App

Step 3. As soon as you tap the filter icon, you will see all the filters that are available for you to use in the app. You will also see the live previews of each effect which helps in deciding which one you want to go for. Tap on any of them and it will quickly be applied to your new photo.

Step 4. You can now capture the photo as you normally do and it will be saved along with your chosen filter in the Photos app.

When you open the photo to view, you will find it has the effect of the filter you chose earlier.

Method 2. Add Filters to the Existing Photos on Your iPhone

If you wish to apply a filter to an old, existing photo on your iPhone, you can use the Photos app to do so. The procedure is similar to the above method in many ways.

Step 1. Launch the Photos app on your iPhone and open the photo you want to apply a filter to.

Step 2. When your photo opens in full-screen mode, you will see a filters icon appearing at the bottom of the screen. Tap on it to open the edit screen.

Edit a Photo in the Photos App

Step 3. On the following screen, you will find various options to edit your photo. Since you wish to apply a filter, tap on the filters icon at the bottom of the screen.

Access Filters in the Photos App

Step 4. You can now swipe through the filters available on your screen and you will instantly see the preview at the top. If you like the filter you have chosen for your photo, tap on Done at the bottom to save the photo with the filter.

Apply a Filter and Save the Photo

As you can see, it is extremely easy to apply filters using the built-in apps on your iPhone.

Part 2. How to Add Filters with Third-Party Photo Apps

While the default filter options on the iPhone should be good enough for most users, advanced users might want even more options for their photos. Maybe you want an iPhone cartoon filter, an animal filter, and so on.

In that case, your best bet is to use a third-party app from the App Store to discover and apply new filters to your photos. These apps often have a lot of new filters and the list keeps on growing as the developers add new filters to them.

App 1. Use Litely to Add Filters to iPhone Photos

Litely is one of the free apps on the App Store that lets you apply filters to your photos. It has a simple and easy to use interface and comes with a number of effects to add to your photos. The following shows how to get and use it on your iPhone.

Step 1. Open the App Store on your iPhone, search for Litely, and install the app on your device.FFFF

Step 2. Launch the app when it is installed. You will immediately notice how clean and uncluttered it is. You will first need to add your photo to the app to apply filters. Tap on the (plus) sign at the bottom to do so.

Step 3. Your photos gallery will open letting you select a photo to add effects to. Browse through your albums and tap on the photo you want to make more appealing.

Step 4. When the photo is added to the app, it will appear in a full-screen mode. You will see the filter options on your screen and you can scroll down to view more. Tap on any of them and it will be applied to your photo.

Select a Filter from the List

Step 5. When you are happy with your edited photo and you want to save it, tap on the share icon at the bottom-right corner of your screen and select the option that says Save Image.

The photo will be saved in the Photos app on your iPhone.

App 2. Use Pomelo to Add Filters to Your iPhone Photos

Another app you can use to add filters to your iPhone photos is Pomelo. It is a pretty nice app letting you easily add a number of effects to your photos in a few quick taps. Also, the app is available at no cost on the App Store.

Step 1. Launch the App Store, search for Pomelo Filters. and download the app to your phone.

Step 2. Open the newly installed app and tap on the gallery icon at the bottom to add your existing photo to the app.

Add a Photo to the Pomelo App

Step 3. Once you have added your photo to the app, you will see several editing options at the bottom. You want to find and tap on the option that says Filters.

Access the Filter Menu in the App

Step 4. The following screen lets you apply various filters to your photo. Scrolling to the right will reveal more filters for you to use with your photo.

Step 5. When you have chosen a good filter for your photo, tap on the share icon at the top-right corner and select Save to album.

Save the Filtered Photo to the Phone

Your photo should be saved to your Photos app.

The Bottom Line

There are a number of iPhone camera filters available to apply to your photos. If you are looking for even more options, there are even third-party apps to find and add a plethora of new effects to your iPhone photos. We hope our guide helps you do it on your iOS device.
