Asus ZenFone Selfie Review. The Best ZenFone Yet!

2015, this year is undeniably the best year for Asus in the smartphone industry. From numerous successful releases that started with the beastly ZenFone 2 with a minimal price tag. With those initiatives and innovations Asus was able to change the market and they were able to establish themselves as a force to be reckon with.

And are not yet done this year, they released other ZenFone’s like the ZenFone 2 Laser, ZenFone Go, ZenFone 2 Deluxe and the our topic for this article the highly interesting ZenFone Selfie. And it’s our favorite among the bunch, find out why as we go through this review. 🙂

Unboxing / Accessories

The ZenFone Selfie just like most ZenFone devices comes in a familiar looking box with a different print. When you open the box you’ll get the paper docs, ZenFone Selfie itself, wall charger adapter and micro USB cable. It will also come with a ZenEar w/ flat cables for calls and decent musical enjoyment. What I’d love to see in the package that’s not here is the inclusion of even just a jelly case as it is quite hard to find in the market.

Build Quality / Design

To be honest, Asus took a bit of a step back with the build and design of the ZenFone Selfie. While it still feels solid and made out of durable materials, it made me miss the better back cover finish of the ZenFone 2 Laser and the regular ZenFone 2 It just comes with a regular slightly matte like finish. (It’s good overall, I’m just nitpicking too much)

The arc back design of this device just like all the other ZenFone 2 devices give a good illusion of it’s slimness. It also features a slightly taller frame due to the inclusion of a front camera sensor. Fortunately, it isn’t a bad thing as the ZenFone Selfie still feels great to hold and still not as big as most 2013. 2014 5.5 inch phablets.

As usual, the volume rocker is ergonomically fitted at the back with the power button on a weird middle top placement.

Just like the ZenFone 2 Laser, this device is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 that’s probably the toughest glass as of the moment. I actually dropped the unit face down and it didn’t even have a scratch. With the ZenFone Selfie, all you need to do is get a good silicon case for a better grip and added protection. Then I’m sure that this device won’t break that easily unless you force it.

In general even with some weaknesses, the ZenFone Selfie is still one of the best looking phones in the market today with better than average build quality.

Display Quality

While others in this price point still on 720p, Asus made sure that you’ll experience midrange to flagship type of display with the ZenFone Selfie. It comes with a 5.5 Inch big enough screen with OGS IPS FHD 1920 x 1080 resolution at 403 ppi. Making it one of the sharpest looking display you’ll see in this price category that has great viewing angles.

Just like the ZenFone 2 and ZenFone Selfie, this device packs a warm tone by default that prevents your eyes from hurting even after hours of straight usage. The color tone can also be adjusted depends on your taste and lighting condition. It also has the bluelight filter mode that lessens the harmful effect of bluelight especially when reading at night.

So far my only complaint here is the max brightness isn’t as bright compared to the other phones and bezels is also slightly thicker than most 2015 phones. Fortunately, those are just minor things, the ZenFone Selfie is great in totality for viewing the photos you took, watching movies and etc. To sum it up: FHD screen 403 ppi Gorilla Glass 4 = Even better display than ZenFone 2.

Audio Quality

I won’t elaborate on this too much, but what I experienced with the ZenFone Selfie is very much like the ZenFone 2 4 GB RAM version and better than ZenFone 2 Laser.

asus, zenfone, selfie, review

The speaker out is loud, detailed and has minimal distortion. The audio out thru headphones is one of the better tuned and loudest so far that I’ve tried. It has a warm soothing sound signature that can be adjusted the way you like it via audio wizard and equalizer and has one of the best sound layering for a phone. In general it’s a near HiFi experience expect this can’t play 24 Bit / 192 KHz audio.

Battery

This is probably the main reason why I use this ZenFone more compared the regular ZenFone 2. Asus was able to do something terrific here, even with the use of a Full HD screen and the should be power hungry Snapdragon 615 chip, this device was able to last me almost 2 days of casual usage where I do calls, social media, taking photos and browsing most of the time.

Under heavy usage, it also performed better than expected. Other phones with similar setup normally last for almost 5 hours, but this device lasted a little under 7 hours! There was even one occasion where I was able to play 4 movies in one charge on max volume, brightness and Wi-Fi on setting.

The battery life of ZenFone Selfie is simply that good making it one of the longest lasting phones we tested this year together with ZenFone 2 Laser. Note: The ZenFie also has a fast charging tech that enables you to have over 50% of charge under 50 mins and full charge in less than an 1:50 hours.

Camera

The best part of the ZenFone Selfie is of course, the front camera. It boast the same capabilities and mega pixel power of the rear camera at 13 MP. The only difference is the aperture size as the rear camera is still slightly better at f/2.0 against f/2.2. It also has probably the best flash I’ve tested in the front camera that was able to give me almost natural like results.

Quality-wise the result is just as expected, the laser auto FOCUS provides the very fast focusing experience for a phone and a faster than average shutter speed. The delay going back to the photo view of the phone is also almost non-existent with the unit I have compared with the ZenFone 2 Laser. It can produce better than average to excellent pro camera level camera shots especially when you mastered using it. The color tone is a bit on the warmer vivid side with great sharpness of the image. The ZenFone Selfie also doesn’t have a hard time taking photos even when you’re very near the subject, beating even the likes of the Note 4 and iPhone 6 in macro focusing performance. Then as usual it also has the burst mode function that can take up to 100 photos by long pressing the volume rocker either up or down.

Note: You can only use the 13 MP setting on 4:3 ratio just like most devices. I would have liked it better the full 13 MP can be used even with 16:9 resolution. When it comes to video recording, the ZenFie is also a pretty capable recorder especially for video chats and even doing on the go pod-casting.

Lastly, the best part of its selfie camera is it has all the features you can see in the rear camera of the phone. From manual, HDR, super resolution, lowlight, night depth of field, effect, selfie, beautify, gif, panorama, time rewind, miniature, time rewind, panosphere and Smart remove features.

Performance

The overall performance of this phone is smooth and consistent. Thanks to the use the stable and efficient Zen UI even with bloatwares as it remains to be one of the better UI available for Android today.

It also features capable 64 Bit Snapdragon 615 chipset and 3 GB of RAM for better multitasking. I can switch from one app to another with ease, open multiple apps with almost no hiccups, and gives me an almost flagship level performance. The 4 GB RAM Intel variant of the ZenFone 2 is still faster, but this one is not that far behind that’s hardly noticeable even for some heavy users. Another thing that surprised me here is the heating issue I had with several Snapdragon 615 units we tested is almost non- existent. Asus did a terrific job with the cooling system of this phone that can enable you to play for hours without worrying about that. When it comes to connectivity, I never had a problem with this phone while using Wi-Fi, LTE, 3G and Bluetooth connections.

That makes this device a great daily driver for gaming, multimedia and social media phone due to it’s balanced power and great battery life.

Benchmarks

Pros. Long battery life, fast charging tech, efficient performance, good audio quality, great rear and front camera, selfie flash, fantastic value for money

Verdict

All of the above mentioned traits, makes the Asus ZenFone Selfie the best ZenFone yet for my lifestyle. It was was able to fix the battery life issue I had with the ZenFone 2 Intel variant and the lack of power for the heavy users with ZenFone 2 Laser. Priced at just, 11,995 Pesos, you’ll get a perfectly balanced phone that has good performance, near HiFi grade audio, great camera and long battery life. That makes this phone the cheapest smartphone to boast this powerful setup as of today.

To sum it up the, ZenFone Selfie an incredible value for money even when compared to more expensive midrange even against some of the higher end phones. A surefire must buy under 12,000 Pesos.

Asus Zenfone Selfie Review

It’s somewhat surprising just how long it’s taken for phone manufacturers to really cotton onto the phenomena that is ‘selfies’. With its new Zenfone Selfie, Asus becomes one of the very few very few manufacturers to make a phone dedicated to the photographic self portait.

Like the HTC Desire Eye, the Asus Zenfone Selfie features matching front and rear cameras with dedicated flashes for both, making them truly adept at taking photos of you and your mates, you and the Taj Mahal, you and that funny looking dog, you and…

Asus Zenfone Selfie – Design

It would be easy to say the Zenfone Selfie is basically the Zenfone 2 with a fancier front camera, and it would also be very accurate.

The two phones look essentially identical with their 5.5in screens, swirled metal bezel, curved plastic back and rear mounted buttons. There really is next to nothing distinguishing the two aside from the larger camera that sits in a slightly elongated front bezel.

asus, zenfone, selfie, review

This is no bad thing, though, as both are attractive phones. There’s none of the truly premium metal build quality of your iPhone 6, One M9 or Galaxy S6 but that’s why this is a much cheaper phone.

Instead you get an array of plastic backs in various fetching colours and finishes including a fairly convincing faux brushed metal.

The back has a simple gentle curve to it that combined with its relatively modest 156.5 x 77.2 x 10.8 mm dimensions it feels nice and comfortable in the hand.

We’re not overly keen on the power button being on the top edge, especially when the volume buttons are on the back – it just feels inconsistent, but otherwise it seems to be an easy device to handle.

Like Samsung, Asus is sticking with touch buttons, rather than on screen buttons which makes for a bigger bezel but not so much so that it bothered us.

All told it’s a nice handset that feels about right considering its likely mid-range price.

Asus Zenfone Selfie – Features

Inside the Zenfone Selfie is a Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 with 2/3GB of RAM, 16/32GB storage and a microSD slot. There’s no waterproofing, fingerprint reader or anything to new fangled here. Just solid mid-range specs.

The screen is an LCD panel with a 1080p resolution. That may not sounds all that impressive in this day and age but it’s a perfect bright, colourful panel with excellent viewing angles and, from what we could tell, deep blacks. It’s of course topped by Gorilla Glass.

One trick it has up its sleeve is that it is dual-SIM. It will also run Android 5.0 Lollipop and there’s an optional selfie Swing case that incorporates a metal arm that folds out to either act as a stand for hands-free selfies or as an extension to your arm for further away selfies – it’ll also be easier to grip, though you will of course need to use a timer mode to activate it.

Asus ZenFone Selfie – Cameras

The main feature of this phone, though, is it cameras. Front and back both employ 13mp sensors and each is accompanied by a dual-tone flash for more natural-looking colours.

The rear camera is f2.0 while the front one is slightly less speedy at f2.2, making neither of them particularly fast lenses by modern phone standards. The rear camera also includes laser-assisted auto-focussing.

Trying the cameras out, the rear one did indeed appear to have a nippy auto-FOCUS and results from shots with and without the flash were pretty decent. It’s far too early to say just how good they are but it definitely coped pretty well considering the fairly challenging lighting conditions.

importantly, the front facing camera also did pretty well. Out test shots were rather disturbed by the strong spotlights behind but still came out looking in FOCUS, well metered and with a natural looking skin tone, despite the use of flash. All told it perfectly demonstrates the advantage of having a properly thought out selfie camera.

Whether you can just make do with turning your phone round and using the rear camera is a different matter but having tried numerous times ourselves to do just that we’d suggest dedicated selfie cameras are the way to go.

Asus Zenfone Selfie – Early Verdict

The Zenfone Selfie is unlikely to sway those considering the latest and greatest Android handsets but for those just looking for a mid-range handset that does the basics well and that can also boast an easy way to take great selfies it absolutely fits the bill.

We’ll have to wait for our full review to see exactly how it compares to the HTC Desire Eye but first impressions are definitely good. The Asus Zenfone release date is imminent thought pricing has yet to be announced.

Asus Zenfone Selfie reviewOrigem: GSM Arena EN→PT Archive.org versionThe Asus Zenfone Selfie isn’t too quiet about what it tries to be. a smartphone for taking photos of yourself. With 13 megapixels front and back it sure has nailed the numbers game and the dual-tone dual-LED flash makes it a one-of-a-kind offering. OK, second of its kind, but still a rare breed. than just fabulous selfie shotsOrigem: Laptop Media EN→PT Archive.org versionJudging from the information, which we’ve gathered so far, we can say that we’re impressed by the performance of both 13MP cameras and the quality of the sample shots. Their menus are full of settings and shooting modes, so you can spend a lot of time playing with them. As we expected, ZenUI offered a lot of features, modes and pre-installed applications, which might not be considered as a plus by some users. We also liked the performance of the SoC – not as much in the computing and graphic tests, but rather in the temperatures test. It would’ve been nice if the device had more durable battery, since the result in our web browsing test wasn’t that high, but on the other hand, on the video playback test the device scored 12 hours – a rather impressive score. 69% Asus Zenfone SelfieOrigem: Think Digit EN→PT Archive.org versionThe Asus Zenfone Selfie takes good selfies indeed. However, with the powerful front camera, we expected even better. There is still a slight hint of pixelation in slightly dimmed fluorescent light conditions, although it does do a much better job than most other phones out there. Performance is smooth, and except for its large dimensions and the small volume keys placed at the back, there is no real ‘bad’ thing about it. At Rs. 15,999, it falls in near range of the Xiaomi Mi 4, the ZTE Nubia Z9 Mini and the Coolpad Dazen, all of which have a better form factor, along with similar performance and good camera performance. You may go for it, if you want a Zenfone with brilliant cameras on both ends. If ergonomics take the front seat, the others reasonably make more sense than the Asus Zenfone Selfie. Getting a perfect shot of the Asus Zenfone Selfie

After unboxing the Asus Zenfone Selfie, it seemed like it would take forever to come on sale. But good news just filtered in; this camera god is now available for sale on Jumia. But before you rush into the shops and pick one, let us take a look at what makes this device different from others you are used to.

Design

The body of the the Asus Zenfone Selfie is a wonder of sorts. Multi-faceted polygonal design gives the phone a diamondy feel and somehow improves the grip of the otherwise slippery device.

The phone feels a bit bulky, but the slim design and polygons make its heft forgivable. It is a device that is hands on, requiring your two hands to operate.

Most people picked the device and ask if it’s HTC. There’s a weird similarity in its design to some HTC devices, I really cannot place it and it’s barely noticeable anyway.

Display

I am digging the Asus Zenfone Selfie UI, it is completely relatable and easy on the eye. There are pre-loaded themes in the phone and more can be downloaded on the Google Play Store. A theme’s effect is supposed to be visible across every aspect of the device, but the themes on the Asus Zenfone Selfie seem to stop only in the on-screen notifications.

Most of them are bland if you ask me, save yourself the stress of unrelatable content and just put Di’Ja’s picture on that screen period.

Studies have shown that the blue light from LCD screens reduces the production of Melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. There’s a Bluelight Filter on the Asus Zenfone Selfie that blocks out the blue light and makes using your phone at night as safe as reading a book. How cool is that?

Another cool feature is the One Hand Operation, a feature that lets you reduce the phone’s screen to any size of your preference and operate with one hand, its magic I tell you.

Apart from making a full handed juggle easier, the one hand operation feature is currently my cheat sheet for playing Piano Keys as it reduces the screen and makes movement easier. You are welcome.

And lest I forget, this phone has Anti-Fingerprint layer on the screen that lets you operate it without leaving a fingerprint. Imagine! So even with your gloves on, you can type or make gestures. Bet you have never given this serious thought. Try wrapping a handkerchief around your finger and typing on your smartphone. You get now?

Camera

As the name implies, the Asus Zenfone Selfie is a picture phone with it’s camera as the main selling point, especially the front camera. Ironically, that is one area I am reserved about the phone. 13MP for a selfie camera is a big deal, but the pictures are too fine. They look pre-filtered and have a cartoonish hue.

The filters seem preset and the power to manually set my filters to taste have been taken out of my hands. But this in itself is no big deal, it’s what Instagram people would still do anyway.

Battery

There’s a 3,000mAh power house behind the Asus Zenfone Selfie

Its fast charge capacity really does charge fast. And fills up in 1 hour 5 minutes and after full charge, there are options for Continuous Charge that lets the battery reach it’s full capacity after the fast charge marathon and Trickle Charge that adds charge for another 10 minutes to improve battery life.

And boy, the battery does last long.

Price

As we waited for this device to go on sale, there was a little speculation on the price. The official price of the Asus Zenfone Selfie is ₦58,000 but can be sold higher depending on where you are buying.

The Verdict

The Asus Zenfone Selfie is the perfect camera combined with surprisingly advanced features. A fine meld of work, play and snap, it is the perfect carry for the entertainment savvy, picture loving and business minded person. All its features cannot be highlighted in a single write-up, some have to be experienced personally.

The Asus Zenfone Selfie isn’t too expensive at ₦58,000 and honestly, it’s not too cheap either, it’s just there. It’s a premium device of sorts, so the price can be excused. After all we asked for quality devices from this year onward, and this is a good buy. I like the Asus Zenfone Selfie and you would love it too, if you do not mind the price.
