Asus ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3060 OC Edition Review

Here on the bench today is the Asus ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3060 OC Edition 12GB GDDR6 video card (ROG-STRIX-RTX3060-O12G-GAMING.) For review purposes, (and our sanity) we will just refer to it as Asus ROG STRIX RTX 3060 OC Edition in our text. Jut note that this does have 12GB of GDDR6 and is the OC Edition or as Asus likes to call it “O12G.”

Being that this is an OC Edition STRIX model it’s naturally the cream of the crop within the Asus GeForce RTX 3060 ecosystem. Pricing for this video card from the Newegg shuffle is a whopping 549.99. As we know, the GeForce RTX 3060 series was created without a Founders Edition offering from NVIDIA so the official MSRP of 329 is more a suggestion than previous releases. The hard truth is that manufacturers will be able to exert more control of the pricing for these video cards, and in this pandemic of pricing, it’s going to be exaggerated. Pricing is just going to be all over the place currently but hopefully will settle over time.

Asus GeForce RTX 3060 Lineup

Asus really came through with a load of options for interested buyers with 5 different models and some with accompanying OC variants. Every single base model shares the same clock speeds, at 1777 MHz with the Gaming BIOS and 1807 MHz when using the OC Mode BIOS. VRAM on all models is set to 1875 MHz/15 Gbps. The clock speed parity comes to a stop with the OC Edition counterparts. For the base models, the main differentiators come through in the aesthetics, cooling, quality of life features, and the quality of the components. The OC Editions are where you see speed differences arise. All of these cards are well above the reference specification NVIDIA set at 1780 MHz for boost clocks.

Asus ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3060 OC Edition

The ROG-STRIX-RTX3060-O12G-GAMING is based on NVIDIA’s GA106 silicon, featuring the Ampere architecture and manufactured on Samsung’s 8nm process. This is NVIDIA’s smallest entry utilizing the Ampere architecture, coming in at 276mm2 and packing 13,250 million transistors. Within that silicon we have 3584 CUDA cores, 112 Tensor Cores (3 rd Gen), 28 RT Cores (Ray Tracing Cores 2 nd Gen), 112 TMU’s, and 48 ROPs. This GPU is paired with 12GB of GDDR6 memory on a 192-bit bus running at 15 Gbps and it provides 360 GB/s of total memory bandwidth.

The TGP for this video card is 170W but as we have mentioned this model is overclocked and will consume more power than the NVIDIA reference specification. This Asus ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3060 OC Edition 12GB GDDR6 model comes with core clock speeds rated for 1882 MHz boost clocks while in the Gaming Mode BIOS, and a blistering 1912 MHz boost clock while in OC Mode BIOS.

This Asus model gives you a 7% increase over the reference edition boost clocks at 1780 MHz vs 1912 MHz, assuming you utilize the OC Mode BIOS although even the Gaming Mode BIOS gives you 5.5% faster boost clocks. It’s also a healthy increase over the non-OC Edition at 5.7% faster in the Gaming Mode BIOS and 5.6% faster when comparing OC Mode BIOS.

Asus has managed to find a way to deliver that gamer aesthetic without looking gaudy and overbearing and simultaneously packing in some rather welcome features that we will discuss further in the next section. Dimensions on this Video Card come in at 11.81 inches in length (30cm), 5.26 inches (13.36cm) in width, and 2.11 inches (5.35cm) in height.

Features

The ROG-STRIX-RTX3060-O12G-GAMING is the premiere model in the Asus GeForce RTX 3060 lineup. In Asus’s own words they claim to use only the best components available when producing these cards.

Top-shelf capacitors, chokes, and MOSFETs are selected to effortlessly deliver hundreds of watts at a milliseconds notice. The Super Alloy Power II parts are soldered to the PCB using our advanced Auto-Extreme automated manufacturing process. Smooth joints are on the rear of the PCB and the elimination of human errors ensures each graphics card meets our rigorous specifications.

Asus mentions it utilizes its Axial-Tech Fan design in a triple fan layout, with two fans spinning counterclockwise to reduce turbulence as well as noise. These fans are designed with a smaller hub in an effort to increase the size of each fan blade and utilizes a ring design to help channel more airflow into the fins. This is further enhanced by the PCB and back-plate cutout that limits the amount of hot air getting trapped within the shroud. In a further effort to combat noise, all fans will stop when the video card falls below 50 degrees Celsius.

We see the welcome re-occurrence of Asus FANCONNECT II fan headers on the PCB allowing users to connect case fans directly to the video card for more dynamic or focused video card cooling.

Moving on we see the BIOS dip switch placed on the PCB with clear instructions on which mode is which. It’s always nice to have clarity with text indicating which position is which.

“PC builders looking for a quick and easy way to set the standard fan speed of their card can choose between the “Performance” and “Silent” profiles with an onboard dual BIOS switch – without additional software.”

On the Asus webpage for this product, they mention their MAXCONTACT technology which is a method to polish the surface of the heat spreader for increased flatness and in turn better thermal transfer with the GPU die and heatsink. Asus also mentions that this is a 2.7 slot design.

“To get heat up off the die and into the heatsink array to benefit from the new fan design requires special attention. We use a manufacturing process that polishes the surface of the heat spreader to improve smoothness at the microscopic level. The extra flatness allows for better contact with the die for improved thermal transfer.”

With this Asus model, you get a fairly interesting set of offers and software to toy around with. On the back of the box, we see a 6-month premium license to Wtfast, a 1-year premium license for XSplit, alongside a mention of the Asus GPU Tweak III software that can help users get more out of their graphics card. Asus also speaks briefly on the back of the box about QuantmCloud, an application that allows users to earn extra money by sharing GPU compute resources. NVIDIA staples such as NVIDIA REFLEX, GeForce Broadcast, GeForce RTX IO, and RTX Voice are all supported features as well.

Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti OC Review

Despite its limited availability, the RTX 30-Series has been with us for some time and has proven itself to be an excellent choice for gamers. Today, I’m looking at the Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti OC. Featuring a fast factory overclock, a large and quiet cooler, dual BIOS, and striking RGB, it’s an impressive graphics card. But is it worth the 599 premium?

Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti OC – Design and Features

The ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti is a beast of a card. It features a striking, and great looking, triple-fan cooler that absolutely dwarfs the Founders Edition version of the card. In fact, it’s tenths of an inch bigger than the BFGPU itself, the RTX 3090, though Asus classified this card as 2.9-slot width instead of the 3090’s 3-slot. It’s an inconsequential difference. The card is built sturdily; that metal trim isn’t just for show. It uses a metal frame to prevent sag and even more on the backplate to shed heat. It’s a heavy, industrial looking card that doesn’t need RGB to look cool (though it has that too).

That large cooler is put to good use. I was happy to see that the Strix follows Nvidia’s lead and uses a shortened PCB. The last fan blows directly through the heatsink and exhausts through a vent in the backplate of the card. This design, combined with Asus’s Axial-tech fan design, allows the card to stay nice and cool while also keeping temperatures down.

In my testing, it peaked at 59 degrees celsius in my Lian Li LanCool II chassis. That’s remarkably cool. A similarly specced MSI RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio, reached 68C under the same conditions. The Founders Edition reached 75C. The card features a zero RPM mode, which stops the fans when the card isn’t being pressed, but even under full load I was hard pressed to hear any difference in noise with my naked ear. Using a decibel meter, it came in at 35dB, which was only 2dB louder than the FE. Both cards were easily drowned out by my case fans. The card features a dual BIOS switch to choose between Performance and Quiet modes. Toggling it to Quiet allowed the card to rise to 63C under load but dropped to 31dB, beating the Founders Edition.

Running so cool also means thermal throttling is never an issue. The card comes with a high factory overclock of 1890 MHz in OC Mode, which is a solid 220MHz boost over the reference model. Thanks to those low temps, the card was easily able to surpass this and instead hovered around 2GHz. As a result, it was able to eek out slightly higher FPS in many scenarios than other RTX 3060 Tis I tested.

Under the hood, the Strix is packing all of the same specs as every other RTX 3060 Ti: 4864 CUDA Cores, 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM, as well as the latest generation of Nvidia’s Ampere architecture. No matter which card you buy, you’ll have access to core features of this generation like DLSS, which intelligently upscales content to play games at higher resolutions with lower performance cost. Likewise, you’ll also be able to enjoy ray tracing and AI enhanced features like Nvidia Broadcast. Be sure to read about the other benefits of the Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition.

Finally, when it comes to IO, the card features three DisplayPort 1.4a outputs, dual HDMI 2.1 outputs, and includes HDCP support. The maximum resolution is 7680 x 4320 broken across a maximum of four displays.

Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti OC. Performance

With hardware out of the way, it’s time to look at performance. I test graphics cards using a set procedure, first running each new GPU through a series of synthetic benchmarks for rasterization and ray tracing performance. Then, I dive into real-world performance using an array of a dozen popular games both with and without ray tracing and DLSS support. All games are tested at Ultra settings unless otherwise noted.

Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti OC. Synthetic Benchmarks

Card 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra Uniengine Heaven 4.0
Nvidia RTX 3090 Founders Edition 12,055 4,106
AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 12,105 3,671
Nvidia RTX 3080 Founders Edition 10,744 3,385
AMD Radeon RX 6800 10,265 3,041
Nvidia RTX 3070 Founders Edition 8,547 2,785
Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition 7.306 2,258
Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti OC 7,538 2,392
MSI RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio 7,449 2,284
Aorus GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Extreme 8,426 2,882
Nvidia RTX 2080 Super Founders Edition 6,902 2,301

In 3DMark’s Fire Strike and Unigine’s Heaven benchmark, the Asus leads the Founders Edition and MSI Gaming X Trio. Expectedly, it fell short of the RTX 2080 Ti but did surpass the RTX 2080 Super in Heaven.

Turning to ray tracing performance, the story is much the same. The results are very close, but what I would expect from a card with a higher factory overclock and plentiful thermal headroom. Still, the results are close between each RTX 3060 Ti variant, which is a trend as you’ll see in the gaming benchmarks.

Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti OC. Gaming Benchmarks

Looking at our core five games for GPU reviews, we can see that the Asus ROG Strix performs well, generally leading the the Founders Edition and MSI Gaming X Trio. There is some back and forth, however, indicating that the variance between the cards is slight.

To get a better eye on overall performance, I put the card through my expanded suite of testing. The trend remained true throughout. Compared against the RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition, the Asus averaged 3% faster frame rates at both 1440p and 1080. Against the MSI, it was 4% and 1% faster. Though that might seem slightly odd given that the MSI is also a factory overclocked card, remember that we’re talking differences of 2-3 FPS in some cases. The real world performance difference usually isn’t noticeable at all.

Looking at these results, it’s clear that the Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti is the best RTX 3060 Ti of the three I’ve been able to test so far. Thanks to thermals not generally being a problem for any of these cards, and GPU Boost reliably overclocking each, the real world difference is extremely small. Due to this, the real benefit to this card is in its temperature and acoustic performance more than its sheer FPS.

Purchase Guide

The Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti OC retails for 599 and it’s available from Amazon, Newegg, and Micro Center.

Verdict

The Asus ROG Strix RTX 3060 Ti is one of the best RTX 3060s available today. Its big heatsink allows it to run cool so GPU Boost can sweep it up to high clock speeds. At this price, however, it’s a hard sell since it is effectively competing against the RTX 3070, which delivers much higher FPS. If you’re already in the ROG ecosystem, it might be worth a look, but if performance is what you want, it’s wiser to just buy an RTX 3070.

The Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition offers brutal performance-per-dollar, RTX 2080 Ti performance on the cheap.

The Bottom Line

The Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition is a great card offering RTX 2080 SUPER and RTX 2080 Ti levels of performance at a much cheaper price point.

Introduction

Not everyone wants, or can afford, or even find the GeForce RTX 3090 and GeForce RTX 3080.- some don’t want the GeForce RTX 3070.- and thus NVIDIA has the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti for those people.

Today, we’re looking at the custom Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition graphics card which does everything the RTX 3060 Ti needs to do.- including DLSS and RTX real-time ray tracing technologies, and it does it with a single 8-pin PCIe power connector.

I’ve become a big fan of the TUF Gaming brand from Asus over the last year or two, where I’ve just come in off reviewing the Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3090 OC Edition graphics card. I was a huge fan, and I’m equally as much of a fan of the mid-range TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition variant.

NVIDIA’s own GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition is priced at 399 while the custom Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition graphics card was on Newegg for 539.- and out of stock.- at the time of writing.

We have the GPU boost hitting 1665MHz while the 8GB of GDDR6 memory is at 14Gbps on a 256-bit memory bus with 448GB/sec of memory bandwidth. NVIDIA has the TGP at 200W, up from the 175W on the RTX 2060 SUPER.

Detailed Look

Asus has its great retail packaging out on show for the TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition, and as with previous Комментарии и мнения владельцев on the packaging I really like it.

The same goes for the look and style of the Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition graphics card, which just looks great. It is a mainstream graphics card that looks like it is punching above its weight, and it does.- the RTX 3060 Ti offers some great performance for the dollar.

Seriously, I will continue to say I’m a big fan of the backplate on the Asus TUF Gaming graphics cards.

The Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition is thicker than the RTX 3060 Ti FE, but it offers a completely different style and much better thermal performance.

You only need a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, which is great.- equal to the RTX 3060 Ti FE, and better than other custom cards on the market that require dual 8-pin PCIe connectors.

Asus includes expanded display outputs on the TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, with 3 x DP 1.4 and 2 x HDMI 2.1 connectors.

There’s also dual BIOSes on the card.

3DMark Fire Strike

3DMark has been a staple benchmark for years now, all the way back to when The Matrix was released and Futuremark had bullet time inspired benchmarks. 3DMark is the perfect tool to see if your system. most important, your CPU and GPU. is performing as it should. You can search results for your GPU, to see if it falls in line with other systems based on similar hardware.

Heaven. 1080p

Heaven is an intensive GPU benchmark that really pushes your silicon to its limits. It’s another favorite of ours as it has some great scaling for multi-GPU testing, and it’s great for getting your GPU to 100% for power and noise testing.

Benchmarks. 1080p

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is the latest game to be inserted into our benchmark suite, with Ubisoft Montreal using its AnvilNext engine to power the game. It scales really well across the cards, and has some surprising performance benefits with AMD’s new Big Navi GPUs.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a sequel to the popular Shadow of Mordor, which was powered by the Lithtech engine. When cranked up to maximum detail, it will chew through your GPU and its VRAM like it’s nothing.

Metro Exodus is one of the hardest tests that our graphics cards have to go through, with 4A Games’ latest creation being one of the best looking games on the market. It is a serious test that pushes GPUs to their limits, and also features RTX technologies like DLSS.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the latest games to join our graphics card benchmark lineup, with the game built using the Foundation engine as a base, the same engine in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Eidos Montreal RD department made lots of changes to the engine during the development of Shadow of the Tomb Raider to make it one of the best-looking games out right now.

1080p Benchmark Performance Thoughts

You’re going to get stellar 1080p performance out of the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, with the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition we’re matching the performance of the RTX 3070 when overclocked in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Not too bad at all.

The Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition beats the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition in Shadow of War at 1080p, loses to the RTX 2080 Ti in Metro Exodus and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Still, for a card that is 500 cheaper than the 1199 that the RTX 2080 Ti debuted at is impressive in itself.

1440p Benchmark Performance Thoughts

Asus is beating the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE by 1FPS in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla at 1440p with its custom TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition graphics card. It loses by 1FPS at stock, beats it by 1FPS when overclocked.

Shadow of War sees similar brute performance with the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition beating the RTX 2080 SUPER by 3FPS but losing to the RTX 2080 Ti by 2FPS. Metro Exodus has the card hitting 52FPS average stock, and up to 55FPS average when overclocked.

Benchmarks. 4K

4K Benchmark Performance Thoughts

I do not recommend buying any GeForce RTX 3060 Ti for 4K gaming, but it’s definitely not a bad card when we hit 4K.

But, at 4K in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla we’re looking at 39-42FPS average depending on stock/overclocked with the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition. In Shadow of War the card beats the RTX 2080 SUPER but loses to the RTX 3070 and RTX 2080 Ti cards.- still, we have 74-79FPS average at 4K here which is easily playable in a game like Shadow of War.

Metro Exodus dips into 35-36FPS territory, not playable IMO.- while Shadow of the Tomb Raider is above 60FPS average with 64FPS stock and 73FPS average on the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition.

Overclocking

Out of the box the Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition was ticking along at around 1875MHz or so, with temps of 56C with the fans spinning along at 1500RPM or so (65%).

But then comes the overclocking, where with my sample I was able to push another 150MHz or so with the card sitting between 1965MHz and 2010MHz. With the fans at 100% the card was only running at 47C which is mighty, mighty impressive for the Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition.

Power Consumption Temps

The Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition was running at just 56C.- which is actually quiet cool under load, while the overclocked card with fans at 100% saw it drop to 48C.

Power consumption is perfectly in line with other GeForce RTX 3060 Ti cards, with the entire Ryzen 7 3800X system using 300W under load and up to 330W or so when overclocked.

What’s Hot, What’s Not

Final Thoughts

Asus continues to impress me with their TUF Gaming graphics cards, with my recent review on the big daddy of the TUF Gaming cards in the TUF Gaming RTX 3090 OC Edition.- but the new mainstream TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition has its own charm. It’s nowhere near as expensive as the RTX 3090, so if you want some 1080p and 1440p gaming then you’re in safe hands.

asus, geforce, 3060

Hell, even 4K gaming isn’t out of the question for the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition. We’re looking at performance that is equal to, or better than the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. Previous flagships in their Turing class, now equaled by a mid-range Ampere card.

If you’ve skipped over the GeForce RTX 20 series and can manage to find the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition, then you should highly consider this card. If you like the style, the performance side of things is handled with RTX 2080 Ti levels of performance at half the cost.

asus, geforce, 3060

Asus has the card running super-chill, and virtually silent with the right fan profile settings. You will get away playing Cyberpunk 2077 without a problem on the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3060 Ti OC Edition.
