Appearance

The design of Lenovo Vibe P1 is strict and elegant. worthy of a flagship. The smartphone is offered in two colors: silver (Platinum) and dark gray (Graphite Gray), which turned out to be on the test. By design, it is a non-separable monoblock of rectangular shape with rounded corners. Almost the entire front surface of the device is smooth, and the screen is covered with protective glass. The side frames are narrow, and a free space of 15 mm high is left above and below.

Down in the center is a fingerprint sensor combined with the Home button, decorated with a shiny metal edging, and on the sides of it there are hardware buttons with a backlight. Above the screen is a speaker, sensors and a front camera.

The back cover is slightly curved. It is almost all metal, with the exception of two plastic strips-inserts (to ensure the operation of the antennas) in the upper and lower parts. The top insert is the only removable element in the smartphone. Under it are two slots. The first is for two SIM cards that fit into a single frame, and the second is for microSD cards.

Below this cover, the main camera, dual LED flash, NFC sensor and the logo of the series of smartphones are located.

The ends and faces are flat and with small chamfers that do not shine, which is why they are not too noticeable, but they still help to hide the thickness of the case.

The side faces are made of aluminum. On the right is a narrow metal volume rocker key and a similarly shaped power button. On the left side is a small button with a ribbed surface, which serves to quickly activate the energy saving mode.

At the top there is a 3.5 mm audio output and a microphone, at the bottom center there is a micro-USB port, and on the sides of it there are two perforated grilles (although there is only one speaker).

The build quality of the smartphone is very high. The lid does not bend, the removable pad sits in place tightly and does not play. And in general, Vibe P1 is tactilely perceived as a very reliable high-end device.

Ergonomics

The body of the Vibe P1 is comfortable and well balanced, but not compact enough for one-handed operation. Although holding it in the palm of your hand is convenient due to the rounded shape of the back cover. Its surface is only slightly rough, which is why the device still slides in the hand, but not as much as in the case of glossy or glass covers. If you hold the device tightly in your palms with a horizontal orientation (for example, while watching a or a game), you can block the speaker, which makes the sound muffled. Buttons are easy to find and vary by touch due to different sizes or finishes. They are pressed distinctly. The main camera is located so that during shooting it is not easy to close it. Successfully, from the point of view of photography, the volume rocker is also placed (it can be used as a shutter button).

Screen

Vibe P1 is equipped with a 5.5-inch IPS-display with a resolution of FHD (1920 × 1080) and a density of 401 ppi, which is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which reliably protects from scratches. It was also struck that the oleophobic coating was so effective: looking at the screen after a week of testing, you can’t say with certainty whether you already used a smartphone or just got a new one out of the box.

The screen picture is smooth and clear. The Color Balance menu allows you to adjust the nature of color reproduction. When using the “Default Mode” setting, we get an almost reliable (slightly warm) picture and moderately saturated shades. This effect disappears completely if, in the “Custom” mode, the engines are set to the middle position for tone and saturation. Adaptive mode is useful for long reading and web surfing. it makes the background pleasant and tireless for the eyes (similar to a slightly yellowed newspaper). There is also an option to turn on high brightness and a special mode that is designed to increase the visibility of the picture on the street.

The viewing angles of the screen are maximum: even with very strong tilts, the colors are not distorted, and the screen dims quite a bit.

The brightness obtained at the maximum of the standard adjustment is enough to use the device outdoors on a mildly sunny winter day, and in summer the option or mode mentioned above will come in handy. With a minimum brightness, the backlight can be comfortably read even in complete darkness.

The capacitive sensor distinguishes up to 10 taps.

Interface

The smartphone is running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with a proprietary shell Lenovo Vibe UI.

The dialer, contact list, and on-screen keyboard screens look familiar to AOSP.

The Vibe UI shell differs from the standard one in that the icons of all applications are placed on the desktops (several are initially used) or arranged in thematic folders (“Entertainment”, “Work”, “Tools”, “Games”, “Social Networks” )

Among the pre-installed applications, in addition to the standard ones, there are only a few additional third-party ones (for example, “Guvera Music” and the office suite WPS), as well as branded ones: Lenovo Companion, SYNCit (for synchronizing user data), SHAREit (for file sharing) and a tutorial on work with a smartphone.

For the lock screen “out of the box”, there are six themes that differ both in design and functionality.

The convenience of controlling a smartphone with one hand will be enhanced by the functions included in the main menu (“Special” item): a smart button that can call up a small smart menu and execute a number of other commands, and activate a smaller screen (its size is adjustable), for which just draw a finger with the arc at the desired edge of the screen (left or right).

The protection of information and increased convenience in the management of the device provides a fingerprint scanner. The smartphone approaches their storage very carefully, collecting the final image from several fragments, and is able to remember several prints.

The device is in operation

Vibe P1 is built on a modern platform, including an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor (MSM8939) with an operating frequency of up to 1.5 GHz, an Adreno 405 graphics accelerator, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory (about 19 GB available to the user). The amount of internal memory can be increased with a microSD card with a capacity of up to 128 GB. In addition, the USB port supports Rapid OTG mode, and this allows you to connect USB flash drives (for example, to watch movies or photos from them), and use the port simultaneously for exchanging data and recharging another mobile device.

The performance of the device is more than enough for smooth operation of the interface, scrolling through screens and working with menus. There were no problems with typical tasks, as well as in browsers when scaling and scrolling pages.

in Full HD resolution, both from YouTube, and recorded in the device’s memory (or on a memory card), played back smoothly.

The results of synthetic tests are far from top:

However, to perform routine actions and entertainment, including games, smartphone performance is enough. With simpler titles. Doodle Jump DC Super Heroes and Lara Croft: Relic Run there were no problems. The heavier Godfire: Rise of Prometheus and World of Tanks Blitz were also comfortable to play.

The spoken speaker proved to be worthy: there were no problems with intelligibility and audibility. The main speaker is also quite good, optimally in volume and frequency range it sounds at a level of about 80%. When listening to music in the FLAC format through headphones (16 Ohms), the sound quality is also good, low frequencies completely “swing” at a volume level of 70-75% of the maximum, it is also the most comfortable, i.e. there is a margin of power. The sound of the complete headset is, of course, more modest, but with its help, the built-in FM-receiver confidently receives most radio stations and produces decent sound with a predominance of medium and high frequencies.

Camera

The main camera is equipped with a 13 megapixel sensor, a phase-detection AF system and a dual LED flash, and the front camera has a 5 megapixel sensor and a fixed focus lens.

To launch the Camera application, you can use the icons on the unlocked and locked screen, as well as double-click the “minus” volume control button. The main screen of the application with a horizontal orientation does not replete with the abundance of on-screen buttons. In the upper left corner there are three icons: for switching cameras, choosing a flash mode, activating the HDR function. In the lower left. only the icon for invoking the main settings menu. At the top right is the gallery call icon, in the center are the capture and shutter release buttons for taking pictures, and the mode menu call icon is at the bottom right. For the convenience of framing, you can display the grid and electronic level on the screen.

The main menu allows you to configure all the basic shooting parameters.

The menu of modes includes only three items: “Normal shooting”, “Panorama” and “Special effects”.

Note that the camera can only take a panorama in the upright position of the smartphone, which the application reports when this mode is activated.

The Special Effects menu offers several familiar filters.

Examples of the use of filters “Negative” and “Sepia”:

When taking pictures, pre-autofocus and metering with priority for the center area of the frame are active by default. Both processes are performed very quickly and correctly. In difficult lighting conditions, to perform manual metering, just touch the screen in the right place on the frame.

When shooting in fairly bright light (in the daytime and in bright rooms), the camera gives good results: the pictures are clear and with the right colors. At the same time, such subtle nuances as warm shades of the evening sun or artificial lighting are correctly recorded.

Pictures taken at dusk and at night also have good color reproduction. Automation, trying to avoid slow shutter speeds where it is difficult to get clear shots, greatly increases the ISO value, so quite a lot of digital noise is noticeable in night shots at high magnification. However, when reducing images in photo editors to common screen sizes, the noise remains visible only in some smooth areas, and its effect on detail is leveled out. So this option is much better than aggressive noise reduction with washing out small parts.

When shooting contrasting scenes, including at night, the HDR function performs well. It can be especially effective in the dark, however, in order to get a good result from the photographer, you will need to keep the camera still.

Daytime shooting without HDR. Daytime shooting with HDR.

Shooting at night without HDR. Shooting at night with HDR.

When shooting close-ups, the built-in flash correctly illuminates objects and ensures the correct white balance.

Close-up shot without flash. Close-up shot with flash.

The camera records panoramic pictures with a low resolution. She can remove them only when the apparatus is upright and does not know how to compensate for the camera shifts well enough, so the final gluings sin with waviness and even steps. To get decent results, you need to move the smartphone very slowly and smoothly.

With the shooting of the text there are no problems, especially if there is a lot of light.

The front five-megapixel camera takes good self-portraits: if the lighting is good, then there are no problems with clarity and color reproduction.

The main camera records with a maximum resolution of Full HD.

The quality is good: the day and night ensures the correct color reproduction with rich colors. Autofocus responds only to a sharp change in brightness in the frame or strong oncoming light sources, and it ignores the flickering of night lights and moving objects.

Wireless interfaces

The device is equipped with a full set of modules for wireless communications: LTE, Wi-Fi (802.11 b / g / n / ac), Bluetooth 4.1 LE and NFC. All of them worked without failures, the smartphone quickly connected to external devices and did not break the connection.

The gadget is equipped with a slot in which a frame with two positions for SIM cards of Nano format is installed, each of which can work in LTE networks.

The navigation module is capable of working with three satellite systems: GPS, GLONASS and Beidou. Searching up to 25 satellites during a “cold” start takes no more than half a minute, and with a “hot” one. a few seconds.

Offline work

The Vibe P1 is equipped with a non-removable lithium-polymer battery with the highest in the class (as the manufacturer claims) with a capacity of 5000 mAh. At the complex load that the PCMark benchmark simulates, the battery lasts for almost 12 and a half hours.

With a less intensive scenario for using the gadget (irregularly made phone calls, photo and shooting, web surfing, reading books, etc.), the battery can last at least three times longer.

We add that to save energy, Vibe P1 has a function that closes all marked applications in sleep mode. But this is not all: there is a switch on the case that disables all applications except the active one (however, you can add the necessary ones to the list of exceptions), and also stops the transfer of mobile data and disconnects wireless connections. When only mobile communications and selected applications are available, the device can last without recharging for more than three days.

An hour of playing WoT Blitz at 50% brightness with Wi-Fi turned on reduces the battery charge by about 19%, that is, it should last about five hours. When viewing FHD from a file located on a memory card, with a maximum screen brightness in Flight mode for 10 hours, the battery lost only 47% of the charge, i.e. it may be enough for a 20-hour session.

It is important that the smartphone not only works for a long time on battery power, but is also able to recharge quickly: when charging from a proprietary dual-amp adapter, even without the active energy-saving function, the battery capacity is replenished by 1% per minute (in the area up to about 85%), and when active function of accelerated charging (24W Quick Charge), a fairly high recharge rate is maintained further (up to 95%).

Summary

Lenovo Vibe P1 is very soundly made and has an attractive and solid appearance. A high-quality 5.5-inch FHD screen, a modern processor, work in LTE networks and a USB-OTG interface will provide support for most types of entertainment, with the possible exception of only the most demanding of resources (but still need to be found). High levels of autonomy, achieved through a very capacious battery and advanced energy-saving means, as well as support for three navigation systems, make the smartphone especially attractive for those who travel a lot. Perhaps the only drawbacks to Vibe P1 are the not-so-high quality photo and shooting in difficult conditions. But all these advantages clearly outweigh.

Lenovo Vibe P1 is a good example of how an advanced, well-balanced and perfectly working smartphone can stay afloat without recharging for a long time.

Pros:

  • high build quality;
  • high-quality FHD display;
  • support for the Rapid OTG function;
  • long battery life and fast charging;
  • Advanced power saving and protection features.

Minuses:
