Switch Pro controller to PC guide: How to connect the Nintendo gamepad

The easiest way to connect Nintendo’s Switch Pro controller to your PC, wired or via Bluetooth.

Nintendo didn’t build the Switch Pro controller to connect to PC, but guess what: it’s such a nice controller, we’re using it anyway.

Nintendo’s perfectly hefty controller has killer battery life and a layout that feels subtly different from the similar Xbox gamepad; it’s a great pick for playing console ports and action games on PC, once you get it set up. And it’s so much better than those joycons, am I right?

There are a few ways to go about connecting the Switch Pro controller to PC, but using Steam is my go-to recommendation because it takes away all the fuss of setup. Nintendo didn’t make the Switch Pro controller PC compatible itself, but Valve did—thanks, Valve! If you mainly want a controller to play Steam games, using the Switch Pro Controller is practically as plug-and-play as an Xbox pad. But if you want to play non-Steam games, you’ll need the rest of this guide.

Here’s how to get your Nintendo Switch Pro controller working in Steam or for other Windows games, both over wired USB and Bluetooth. To start, you’ll need a Nintendo Switch Pro controller (obviously) and a USB-C cable.

How to use the Switch Pro Controller in Steam

Steam’s built-in controller configurator recognizes Nintendo’s controller as soon as you plug it in, which makes using the controller super easy in Steam games. Enabling it is extremely simple. Start by. plugging the controller into your PC.

Open Steam and the settings menu. Find the Controller tab and open General Controller Settings. You should see a few configuration support options on the left. Toggle on Switch Configuration Support.

If you like your Pro controller with flip-flopped X/Y and A/B buttons, you can also enable the Nintendo button layout so games default to it (Microsoft had to go and reverse them on its controller, for some reason, and it’s still confusing). If this option is not enabled, your Pro controller will be treated like an Xbox controller.

You can also change your controls game-by-game by right-clicking that game in your library, selecting Edit Steam Controller Configuration, and remapping each button.

While you’re here, take the time to personalize your Switch controller by selecting it under Detected Controllers. If your controller isn’t registering properly, start by clicking Identify, then open the controller‘s preferences. You can change the name, the brightness of the home button’s light ring, and whether to use the gyro motion sensor.

From the controller settings page, you can also calibrate your controller’s gyro sensor and joysticks by clicking Calibrate, but you should only calibrate your controller if you run into latency issues. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If you ever feel the need to calibrate your controller, click Calibrate, set it on a flat surface, and follow the button prompts.

So, if everything feels right, just save your profile and voila, you’re ready to go. Whenever you want to use your controller, be sure to plug it in before opening Steam or any Steam games to prevent any connection issues.

Setting up the Switch Pro Controller for non-Steam games

Using Steam is the really easy way to get this controller working. If you aren’t playing games via Steam, using a Switch Pro controller is still an option but it requires a little extra work, particularly for a Bluetooth connection. But the good news is that it’s now natively recognized in Windows, which helps speed things up.

The easiest solution for non-Steam games is to actually bring Steam back into the picture. Steam has an Add to library feature for Windows executables that allows you to add other programs to your Steam library, and then make use of the Steam overlay. This even works for the Nintendo GameCube/Wii emulator Dolphin!

As you can see in the image above, click the Games menu in Steam, then choose the Add a Non-Steam game to my library. option to pull up a list of programs on your PC. In most cases, this should allow you to add a game and use a controller with Steam as an intermediary. Hooray!

How to get Bluetooth working on PC

Here’s what you need to start:

• Nintendo Switch Pro controller
• Bluetooth dongle (or built-in Bluetooth)
• 8Bitdo wireless Bluetooth adapter (optional)

Bitdo adapter: Easy Bluetooth and XInput support

The 20 8Bitdo Bluetooth adapter helps you bypass most of the finicky setup below by handling the Bluetooth connection and making Windows play nice with the controller without any extra software. It’ll make Windows see the controller like it would an Xbox gamepad, and supports the button/joystick inputs and motion controls (but not vibration). As a bonus, this will work on multiple consoles and with tons of other controllers, too, including the Switch Joy Cons, PlayStation 4 controller, Wii remotes, and more.

The (slightly) harder way: Windows installation guide

Note: You only need to follow these steps if you’re not using the Switch Pro Controller through Steam.

Plug your Switch Pro controller into the PC with a USB cable. You should be able to use the USB-A to USB-C cable that came with the controller, or you can use a USB-C to USB-C cable, if your PC has the appropriate port. Within a few seconds, Windows 10 should pop up with a new connected device: Pro Controller.

You’re most of the way there! But because this is a DirectInput controller (like most gamepads other than the Xbox’s), if you aren’t using Steam’s built-in controller interface, some games won’t recognize the controller without some extra software.

Download BetterJoy and install it.

BetterJoy is a piece of open source software specifically built to use the Switch Pro controller and joy-cons as generic XInput devices (and to make them easier to use with emulators).

Unzip BetterJoy, open the folder it created when you unzipped it, and head to the drivers folder within. Install its drivers and reboot as it instructs you to. That’s pretty much the install process. Now it’s time to connect that controller.

The (slightly) harder way: Windows Bluetooth setup

You only need to follow these steps if you want to play wirelessly and chose not to buy the 8Bitdo adapter for Bluetooth connectivity.

Note that if you decide to connect via Bluetooth, without using the 8Bitdo adapter method above, you cannot charge the controller while it’s connected, so make sure its battery is topped off before you start.

First, disconnect it from your Switch by holding the small circular button on the top of the controller to the left of the USB-C port. (If your Switch is in the same room as your PC, I recommend turning it off, just to keep your Bluetooth environment clear. We also don’t want it to know we’re two-timin’ it. You can easily reconnect your Pro controller to your Switch via cable.)

Pull up your Windows Bluetooth settings and start a search for new devices, then press the same small button on the top of your controller one more time. It should automatically pair after 30 seconds to a minute.

Using your Switch Pro controller in PC games

BetterJoy works by reading DirectInput commands as XInput commands, which is what most modern games support. Now that it’s installed, your Switch Pro controller should behave like an Xbox 360 controller in most games. But first you have to launch BetterJoy for Cemu (the name of the executable) from its install folder.

Once it’s open, click the Locate button and it should find your Switch controller if it’s paired via Bluetooth. Once connected, you can click Map buttons to change as desired.

And with that you’re ready to game: your controller should show up and work in any game that an Xbox controller would.

Finding the best controller for playing PC games is a more personal journey than it sounds. It’s got to be comfortable to use, with every button, stick, and trigger easily in reach. It’s also important that you’re getting the features you want. For example, those might include easy setup on PC, good battery life, multi-platform compatibility, and accessibility options, like the ability to remap buttons and adjust stick or trigger sensitivity.

Microsoft Xbox controller

On the Polygon team, the Xbox controller got the highest number of endorsements of any controller. This speaks to its comfort and value, and that Microsoft has released enough colors to satisfy varying tastes in design. It also helps that it’s usually around 50 (depending on the color), and that it just works with most PC games. Regardless of the Windows PC game client, there are no extra steps for setting it up.

It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack for private listening, though it can only be used if your controller is wired into your PC, not wirelessly.

Beyond PC compatibility, the Xbox controller boasts native compatibility on Steam Deck, plus recent versions of Android and iOS. So, whether you have a phone or tablet, this controller can easily connect via Bluetooth. A growing number of mobile games support it, too, and it works like a charm with the Xbox Game Pass game streaming app.

If you don’t need all of the extra accessories that come with the Elite Series 2, Microsoft makes a cheaper Elite Series 2 Core. If you decide later on that you want the paddles, zip-up case, and swappable sticks, you can buy this third-party kit on Amazon for 22.99.

Sony DualSense controller

There’s another slice of our staff who swear by Sony’s DualSense, a modern controller that retains the symmetrical analog stick arrangement that Playstation controllers are known for. Compared directly to the Xbox controller, the DualSense has similar levels of compatibility (both are compatible with Android and iOS, and feature built-in Bluetooth for support on PC). However, the DualSense does have key differences, as well as a few perks that help to justify its higher 69.99 price.

In terms of using the DualSense on a PC, it’s possible to do, but it’s a little complicated. It can connect via Bluetooth for a wireless connection, but games that don’t support the DirectInput controller API likely won’t recognize it as a controller. Plugging the controller into your PC might solve that issue, but there are other ways to get around this barrier if playing wirelessly is important to you.

Playstation DualSense wireless controller

Compatible with PC, PS5, Steam Deck, mobile (Android/iOS)

One is to rely on Steam, which supports the DualSense controller with its SteamInput API. That makes Sony’s controller a first-class citizen in the eyes of Steam, right next to the Xbox controller, and plenty of games should offer no-fuss DualSense support.

If you have PC games that you want to play on other services, like PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, and more, you might experience some middling compatibility with the DualSense. However, adding them as a “non-Steam game” within Steam can solve for this. To do this, click the “Add a Game” option in the bottom left corner of the Steam client, then find the executable file (.exe) in your storage.

To get around using Steam entirely, you can download an app called DS4Windows along with some drivers, which ensures game compatibility on PC by emulating the DualSense as an Xbox controller. The app gives you a host of settings to customize the DualSense’s button mapping, if you wish. And, in case you want to go down the rabbit hole of figuring out which PC games support the DualSense’s haptics and adaptive trigger features (and the steps to getting them to work), the site PCGamingWiki has you covered.

Here are the best PS5 accessories

The DualSense is the official controller for the PS5. In games that support its features, it can have realistic-feeling haptic feedback and gyroscopic motion controls, and its triggers can provide tension to make certain actions feel more realistic. There’s no better controller for the PS5 than this one. It’s a good controller for using PS Remote Play, too. When it’s connected to an Android device for a PS Remote Play session, the DualSense supports adaptive triggers in games that take advantage of the feature.

8BitDo’s 19.99 USB Adapter 2 also works perfectly with the DualSense, letting you play games on your Switch with it once it’s paired. I preferred to play Splatoon 3 with my PS5 controller’s analog stick arrangement. Heck, it even supports gyroscopic camera movement, just like the official Switch controllers.

Just like Microsoft, Sony also has its own pro-grade controller. It’s the 199.99 DualSense Edge, which is compatible with the PS5. It’s tempting to call out its similarities to the Xbox Elite Series 2, of which there are plenty, but it’s more helpful to speak about how it differs. For one, its stick modules can be replaced entirely — a move that makes the DualSense Edge a little more user-repairable. Also, the PS5’s interface for the Edge is intuitive, and it makes remapping controls and setting schemes the breeze that it should be.

While the Edge is compatible on PC, Sony and Steam haven’t developed drivers that let gamers take full advantage of its back paddles and swappable control schemes.

Nintendo Switch Pro controller

The Switch Pro controller is another staff favorite. If it’s a great Nintendo Switch and PC controller you’re after, this is the pinnacle in terms of comfort, durability, battery life, and other Switch-specific extras, but we’ll get to those a little later.

The Switch Pro controller can be used to play PC games. But like the DualSense, it’s not a plug-and-play affair unless you literally plug it in via USB. To use it wirelessly, running Steam can help you out, as it officially supports the Switch Pro controller. Adding non-Steam games to your Steam library is a clever way to ensure compatibility for games that support controllers. Again, you can do that by clicking the “Add a Game” option on the bottom left corner in the Steam client.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to use Steam to play your games, relying on DS4Windows and its bevy of drivers is a free yet slightly advanced way to make Windows recognize your Switch Pro wireless controller. Of course, that 19.99 8BitDo USB Adapter 2 that I keep referencing can come in handy here, too. After plugging it into your PC and tethering wirelessly to it, you’re good to go — no fussing with apps required.

The Switch Pro controller is, unsurprisingly, a fantastic Switch controller. Like the Joy-Cons, it supports motion controls, HD rumble for more subtle, accurate jolts of haptic feedback in games, and amiibo connectivity to redeem in-game perks in several games, including the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

This might seem small, but it stands out as being one of a few wireless Switch controllers in existence that can wake the console remotely by holding down its home button. Many require you to manually turn on the console, which can be a minor annoyance.

BitDo Ultimate 2.4g controller

8BitDo has released a lot of controllers in recent years, but the name for its Ultimate controller is fitting. It has many of the features from its best gamepads, plus some extras that should settle any sticker shock associated with its 49.99 price.

For starters, its asymmetrical analog stick layout, overall shape, and face button labels should feel right at home for people who love the shape of the Xbox controller. All of the buttons, triggers, and sticks feel just as good to use as any modern controller from a console manufacturer.

Like several other 8BitDo controllers, this one can be thoroughly customized with its Ultimate software on mobile devices, or on PC. From there, you can remap controls, assign buttons to its two rear paddle buttons, tweak the actuation sensitivity of its triggers, and adjust stick settings. The controller allows up to three custom control schemes, which you can switch between with its middle “star” button.

The Ultimate controller ships with a charging dock, and nesting inside of that dock is a 2.4 GHz transmitter that makes it fast and easy to connect to a PC. The dock makes for a convenient way to charge the controller, and you can switch between DirectInput and XInput by using a switch on its back, depending on the requirements of each PC game.

8BitDo makes a pricier version of this controller with Nintendo-style face buttons called the Ultimate Bluetooth. They’re virtually identical, and it can work via 2.4 GHz with PC, too. However, its biggest benefit is its Gulikit Hall effect analog sticks, which are resistant to developing drift over time by design. By comparison, the potentiometer-based sticks used in the Ultimate 2.4g (and all of the other controllers mentioned so far) bear no such guarantee. There’s a possibility you may never experience the issue firsthand, but the anti-drifting sticks alone might be a reason for some to consider buying the Ultimate Bluetooth.

The Ultimate Bluetooth is similar in a lot of ways to Nintendo’s Switch Pro controller, with its motion control support, rechargeable battery, and Nintendo-style face button layout. However, it doesn’t have all of the same features. For instance, it doesn’t support NFC, so you can’t tap an amiibo on it, and its haptics aren’t up to par with Nintendo’s. However, it’s one of a few third-party Switch controllers that can wake your console from sleep. If it’s paired, press the home button, then shake the controller to awaken the Switch.

Obwohl sich sowohl der Xbox-Controller als auch die Joy-Cons über Bluetooth mit den Konsolen verbinden, wird der Microsoft-Controller nicht direkt von der Nintendo Switch erkannt. Nintendo hat eine kleine Hürde eingebaut, damit nicht jeder x-beliebige Controller an der Switch verwendet werden kann. Allerdings lässt sich diese Hürde mithilfe eines Controller-Adapters umgehen. Das funktioniert nicht nur mit dem Xbox-Controller von Xbox One und Xbox Series X/S, sondern auch mit anderen Gamepads wie beispielsweise dem PlayStation 4-Controller.

So verwendest du einen Controller-Adapter an der Switch

Auch wenn sich die Controller-Adapter verschiedener Hersteller ein wenig unterscheiden, grundsätzlich funktionieren sie ähnlich. Zunächst muss ein Adapter über einen der USB-Steckplätze mit der Switch verbunden werden. Auf der Switch gehst du dann in die „Einstellungen“ und anschließend auf „Controller und Sensoren“. Dort wählst du den kabelgebundenen Pro Controller aus. Der Adapter täuscht deiner Switch vor, dass ein Kabel-Controller angeschlossen ist.

Anschließend musst du deinen Xbox-Controller nur noch mit dem Adapter koppeln. Dafür drückst du auf dem Adapter zunächst auf den Button, der den Koppelungsvorgang einleitet. Häufig zeigt dies ein blinkende LEDs an. Danach musst du auf deinem Xbox-One-Controller den Sync-Button drücken und halten. Der Button befindet sich in der Nähe des Micro-USB-Anschlusses an der Oberseite. Wenn das Xbox-Logo schnell blinkt, sucht der Controller nach einem Bluetooth-Gerät. Hört das Logo nach einer Weile wieder auf zu blinken und leuchtet weiß, ist die Koppelung abgeschlossen.

Probleme bei der Verbindung mit der Switch?

Dein Xbox-Controller will sich einfach nicht mit dem Adapter der Switch verbinden? Das kann daran liegen, dass der Controller andere Bluetooth-Verbindungen aufzubauen versucht. Um sicherzustellen, dass sich der Controller nur mit der Switch verbinden kann, solltest du anderer Geräte wie deine Xbox vom Stromnetz trennen und bei anderen Geräten wie PC und Smartphone Bluetooth deaktivieren.
