Best Mac for gaming

Are Macs good for gaming? In the past the answer would’ve been no, but that’s changed: you can play games on a Mac, but which Mac?

It’s something of a running joke among Windows users that Macs are rubbish for gaming. Traditionally the Mac hasn’t been considered a great choice for gaming. There are Macs that can play games well, but they are generally much more expensive than the equivalent PC. Also the fact that upgrading a Mac to meet the requirements of a graphically-demanding modern game is pretty much a no-no makes Macs the least future-proof option for gamers (who often like to be able to tinkle with their computers to build the ideal machine for their purpose).

But Macs have become a much better choice for gaming enthusiasts with the advent of Apple’s first M1 Macs in 2020, the subsequent M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra, and now the M2, M2 Pro and M2 Max. In the past, only the most expensive Macs offered the discrete graphics necessary for gaming. While M-series Macs don’t feature discrete graphics, their graphics capabilities are far beyond the integrated options in Intel Macs and they even beat the best of the discrete graphics cards that were previously included in Intel-powered Macs. With the arrival of the M2 Pro in the MacBook Pro and Mac mini, and the M2 Max in the MacBook Pro, Apple has finally produced a chip that is capable of handling graphics-intensive AAA games.

Another significant change, that is coming with macOS Sonoma later in 2023, is a new Game Porting Toolkit for developers and a Game Mode for gamers (Apple silicon only). Game Mode will kick in to give games higher process priority, reduce Airpods audio latency, and double the Bluetooth sampling rate for game controllers.

The Game Porting Toolkit will take x86 code and other elements, such as DirectInput commands, XAudio commands, Direct3D commands, and other Windows gaming API calls, and translate them to run on Apple silicon in real-time. It’s like Rosetta for Windows games, although it only does part of the job: the game’s developer still needs to translate the game for Macs and make sure everything works properly. Along with the Game Porting Toolkit Apple will also offer a Metal Shader Converter, to make aspects of these translations easier. We hope that this is the first indication that Apple is taking Mac gaming more seriously and that down the line hundreds of Windows games will be available for Macs.

In the meantime, it’s still not quite the case that Macs are great for games, but it is no longer the case that Apple’s Macs are no good for games. The main problem is the lack of games available for the Mac – let alone the M-series Chip – right now, and that is what Apple is trying to rectify.

There is also the fact that, despite perfectly respectable performance, Macs can’t fully compete with purpose-built gaming PCs when it comes to gaming. Even the Mac mini with M2 Pro, which is one of our top choices for Mac gaming right now, would be crushed by a comparably-priced Windows gaming PC. The state of gaming on the Mac

The problem with Mac gaming is that there aren’t a lot of games that are actually available for Macs, let alone M-series Macs. It doesn’t matter how good a Mac might be as a gaming machine if it won’t run the games you want to play.

In a previous version of this article, pre-M1, we talked about how the Mac gaming scene had picked up since Macs started to use the same Intel processors as Windows PCs (back in 2007). The strong sales of Macs in recent years also helped encourage developers to make more A-List games available on the Mac than ever before. However, with the arrival of the M1 chip in 2020 this all changed. With the majority of AAA games starting life on Windows on Intel-powered X86-based PCs, games developers, or publishers such as Feral or Aspyr, now need to write their games for the new ARM-based chip as well as Intel. Porting Windows games to the Mac when they were powered by Intel wasn’t such a struggle, because it was the same instruction set, but, now that Macs are not based on Intel, the instruction set is further removed from PCs than ever and the job that much more complex. This is why Apple is introducing the Game Porting Toolkit to make this process easier for developers.

But it’s not only the M-series chips to blame here – when it arrived in 2019 macOS Catalina stopped support for 32-bit code – which meant a lot of games that used 32-bit code were no longer Mac compatible. At the same time, Apple also introduced Metal for 3D graphics. So even before the arrival of the M1 a lot of games developers had already decided against making new Mac versions of their games because of the extra work required.

The good news is that not all developers need to rewrite their code for the M-series chips. Apple has developed Rosetta 2, a dynamic binary translator that translates instructions from Intel to ARM so that the software can run on M-series Macs. Thanks to Rosetta a number of games are working on M-series chips – although they don’t all work perfectly.

Some game developers had made native versions of their games for the M-series Mac early on and now there are a number of Mac games that run natively on the M-series chip. For example, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft was M1 ready since the day the M1 Mac launched, and Gameloft’s Asphalt 8 and Asphalt 9 both run natively on the M1.

Baldur’s Gate 3, Disco Elysium, Myst, Asphalt 8, Doom, EVE Online, Minecraft, Resident Evil Village, and others are also M1 native.

There are now 259 M1-native games, and many more that run well through Rosetta, according to this list. You can play Banner Saga, BioShock 2 Remastered, Borderlands, Diablo III, Final Fantasy XIV, Hogwarts Legacy and more via Rosetta.

Fortnite was a popular game that runs on M1 Macs via Rosetta. However, thanks to Epic’s fall out with Apple the developer is no longer issuing updates to the game.

The following Aspyr games run via Rosetta: Borderlands 3, Call of Duty, Civilization VI, and Planet Coaster. Aspyr was bought in February 2021 by Embrace Group for 100 million, who says it will accelerate Aspyr’s growth and license even more games.

A number of Feral releases are also playable via Rosetta on the M1 Mac. These include A Total War Saga: Troy, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Dirt and Dirt Rally, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which run reasonably well.

Steam is another source of gaming on the Mac. The Steam platform is compatible with Apple’s M-series chips, but not every game in the Steam library will run on M-series Macs. Read: How to use Steam on a Mac to find out more.

In the pre-M1 days the Mac also has a cunning trick up its precision-engineered sleeve in the form of Boot Camp. Installing Windows via Boot Camp means it is possible to play Windows games on an Intel-based Mac. Alternatively, Parallels or VMware might have been considered options for PC gaming on a Mac.

Unfortunately, if you have an M1 or later Mac, Boot Camp is no longer offered and Parallels and VMware aren’t able to run the Intel version of Windows on the M1 Mac (Parallels can run the ARM version of Windows, but that’s still in development and the games you’d be looking to run won’t run on that anyway).

If you really want to run un-ported Windows games on an M-series Mac Crossover Mac from Codeweavers is a good option. It can translate x86-64 code for Windows to ARM64 code for macOS. Read: CrossOver 20 brings Windows apps to M1 Macs.

If that doesn’t appeal then you will have to wait for Feral Interactive, Aspyr and others to port PC games to M-series Macs.

All this may mean that fewer PC games come over to the Mac, but perhaps this doesn’t matter. ARM-based Macs will natively be able to run any iOS or iPad app, which should bring a number of games over to the Mac from the iPhone and iPad, so far there are around 60 iOS games playable on the Mac including: Among Us, Alien Isolation, Call of Duty: Mobile, Dragon Quest VIII, Grand Theft Auto, Minecraft, Monument Valley, Need for Speed No Limits, Stardew Valley, and X-Plane Flight Simulator.

but even more interesting: some games machines, such as the Nintendo Switch, run on ARM processors, meaning it is theoretically possible to run Switch games on the M1 Mac.

That’s the state of Mac gaming right now. If you want to play games on the Mac you can, but there are limits depending on whether you have an Intel processor or an M1 Mac. But in the long term there is the promise of a wider catalogue of games coming to the M1 Mac.

So, with all this interactive entertainment available to the prospective buyer, which Mac should you choose.

Gaming on the Mac: What you need

Playing the latest games places heavy demands on a computer, both in terms of graphics and processor performance. To ensure you have the best platform for your digital adventures you’ll want a machine that has a fast processor (CPU). You can find 12-core CPUs in the M2 Pro and M2 Max, while the Mac Studio offers the 24-core CPU M2 Ultra (you can also get the M2 Ultra in the Mac Pro, but we don’t recommend that for gamers).

It also helps to have a powerful graphics processor. While casual games use simple two-dimensional graphics that don’t require too much graphical power, the detailed 3D graphics used in high-speed action games can put a lot of strain on your machine. The GPUs on offer from Apple include 16- or 19-core GPUs in the M2 Pro, 30- or 38-cores in the M2 Max, and 60- or 76-cores in the M2 Ultra-powered Mac Studio.

How To Play Steam Windows Games On Mac. Best Method

We also recommend at least 16GB RAM, although our advice would be to get the most RAM you can afford at the point of sale, as it’s impossible to update later. You can get up to 32GB unified memory (Apple’s name for RAM) with the M2 Pro (in the MacBook Pro and Mac mini), up to 96GB RAM in the M2 Max (in the MacBook Pro and Mac Studio), and up to 96GB RAM in the M2 Max (in the MacBook Pro), and a massive 192GB with the M2 Ultra (Mac Studio and Mac Pro).

A decent display is also going to be a bonus, but since nearly every Mac (bar the Mac Studio and Mac mini) has a high-resolution Retina display, you can be sure that games will look great on your Mac. A fast and reasonably high-capacity solid-state drive is a good idea too as games can take up a lot of gigabytes and will also help to improve gaming performance. Luckily Apple no longer sells any Macs with hard drives or the Fusion drive that combined a hard drive and flash storage, but it’s worth noting that some Macs have slower SSDs than others. It’s generally the entry-level models with 256GB storage that are affected by this, although it seems that the 512GB MacBook Pro may also be affected (read about Apple’s entry-level SSD slowdown). With this limitation in mind, it could be wise to get at least a 1TB SSD, if you can afford to.

Another thing to look out for is how well the computer will handle the processor-intensive games. For example, we wouldn’t recommend the MacBook Air because, although the MacBook Air might look like it has similar specs to the 13-inch MacBook Pro, it lacks fans so it may slow down to avoid overheating.

We’d also recommend a comfy gaming chair, some snacks that can be eaten one-handed, and the occasional break to save your spine from developing an unusual shape.

In the Intel Mac world you’d need an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 running at 2.0GHz or more. You would also need a decent, discrete graphics card. One option for non-M1 Macs is to plug in an eGPU to add a discrete GPU to your Mac and benefit from the improved graphics capabilities, unfortunately, the M-series Macs won’t work with an eGPU. Macs gamers should avoid

Graphics performance will obviously vary depending on the type of games you like to play. The general rule of thumb is that if you intend to play fast 3D action games then you should consider the M2 Pro, M2 Max or M2 Ultra. The M2 might be sufficient for some gamers, especially those on a budget, but if you can afford to GoPro you would be wise to.

Some Macs simply won’t have the power to run graphically demanding titles and frame rates will quickly drop to almost unplayable levels when there are lots of characters battling it out on the screen. That reliance on integrated graphics means that there are several Mac models that gamers will probably want to avoid if they want to play graphically demanding games. Of course, if your primary form of entertainment is less demanding fare such as Football Manager, Limbo, or many of the indie games you’ll find on the Mac App Store, then pretty much any Mac will fulfill your needs – as would an iPad.

These Macs would be sufficient for casual gaming, but we recommend you avoid them if you want to play graphically demanding titles:

  • Mac mini (M2 or or older models)
  • MacBook Air (M2 or or older models)
  • 13-inch MacBook Pro (M2 or or older models)
  • 24-inch iMac

Best Mac for gaming

The lack of games that were ready for the M1 Mac, either to run natively, or to run reasonably well via Rosetta, was a problem for some time, but now the situation is a lot better so it is easier to recommend M1-series Macs for gaming.

Our favorite options are the Mac mini with M2 Pro and the Mac Studio with M2 Max, both of which give you a decent deal compared to similarly specced MacBook Pro models. Since you are likely to prefer a large-screen external display to use with your gaming Mac, the fact that a screen isn’t included isn’t an issue.

And just to clear up any confusion. This is not a SIM city game, and this also has nothing to do with these cities XL series by FOCUS home interactive. This is a completely different game from different people. Entirely skylines is a game for PC Macintosh and Linux published by paradox, interactive and developed by colossal order, the Finland based team that also made the city’s in motion series. But while those were more business simulations geared towards managing mass transit systems. Skylines is a proper old school city builder in the vein of SIM city as a SIM city player, since the 1989 original, I was chomping at the bit to get my hands on this thing. Paradox sent me an early review copy that I’ve spent about 40 hours on so far.

Does it succeed in its goal of topping SIM city? Let’s find out. Cities skylines begins with the main menu and get this. There’s no requirement to sign into a server in Antarctica to play. In fact, there’s no multiplayer at all, and that is fine by me. Starting a new game prompts you with nine pre-made maps to choose from based on different environmental themes, resource allocations, and outside connections, name your city, and choose what side of the road traffic should drive on. And it’s time to get the zoning party started as is tradition. You start with a blank plot of land and a set of tools at your disposal. Generally, the goal is to build a city, grow it as big as you like and make sure that it doesn’t die. You have a single highway connection to start out with which acts as the first of many entrances to your city, use the road tools to draw some roads.

And you’ll see that you’re supplied with groups of tiles extending from either side of them. These tiles can be filled with three types of zones, residential, commercial, and industrial, which will become homes, shops, and factories. Although more of them will come into play later on like high density, residential and commercial zones, as well as office zones. The central system of RCI demand is very much the core here. So you’ll want to balance their placement with the other needs of the city, like power. In fact, this is about as shameless, a clone, as you can imagine, but you know what. Calling it a SIM city clone is doing, Skyline’s a huge disservice because unlike that game, this doesn’t suck. Skylines truly is a game that’s greater than the sum of its parts. Whereas SIM city five and cities XL for instance, were the polar opposite. Everything here feels like it’s included for your enjoyment rather than just to conform to a designed by committee idea of what a city builder should be. For one thing, you’re not limited to your initial map size that starting plot of land is two square kilometers, but once you start reaching its borders, you have the option to buy more up to 36 square kilometers worth.

You have a gloriously, huge plot of land to play with here with every inch of it available for you to build on. And if you want even more land, you can model the game to do so. Although it may cause some performance problems, but I’ve yet to feel constrained, just playing skylines as is. Since there’s more than enough space for me to really settle in and play for weeks on end. However, there is no regional play here, as you can only have one city in a safe game at once, and there are no neighboring cities to play as, or do direct business deals with. So that’s kind of a bummer, but thankfully there’s another option districts are in addition to skylines that I am absolutely in love with.

Basically, these are cities within a city and you can simply paint them on the map. The same way you can with zones. Once you create a district, you can name it. Anything you want, pass unique laws and ordinances there and apply specializations. Uh, specializations are the game’s way of handling natural resources like mineral deposits, crude oil, forestry, and farming. There’s no need for giant poppable buildings to drill for oil. All you have to do is place a district and change its specialization and any industrial zones within that space will convert over to utilizing your chosen resource. And each new plot of land that you buy will contain its own selection of new resources.

You can easily have a town that relies on oil and another on forestry and another on gemstones, all working together for the greater good of your city’s bank vault. Although I would love even more options for these districts. Personally, you can already do things like provide free public transit, install, smoke detectors, encourage recycling Band pets, or even legalized recreational drug use. So that’s all good, but let me really micromanage the crap out of things like carpooling incentives and mandatory dimmer switches and banning grape jelly. I could really get into this speaking of banning things, you can also do things like make it so a district doesn’t allow trucks to pass through, which is not only good for reducing noise pollution, but it’s also good for minimizing traffic problems.

Or more likely creating new ones since traffic here is one of the single biggest challenges of the game being from the creators of cities in motion, that is probably to be expected, but thankfully it’s not nearly as overwhelming as it was in that game. You’re not going to be setting individual bus schedules or ticket fairs or anything like that, but it does make a ton of good moves and how it handles its traffic model. And I’d say it’s probably one of the best agent-based systems I’ve seen. Everything you see can be followed, tracked, and even named. So it’s easy to see your traffic problem areas just by looking at a quick glance. Upgrading roads is also a breeze compared to other games I’ve played. And there are a slew of interesting tools at your disposal for creating everything from roundabouts to Cloverleaf intersections, to raised highways with sound barriers.

But there is a suspicious lack of any real fine details to check off like being able to create your own lanes for each road type or disabled traffic lights on roundabouts. In fact, the transit may be downright underwhelming for some, since you can’t even see a list of individual bus or train routes, not to mention naming things as basically pointless, since there’s no way to track them after you lose line of sight. Basically, it’s a little easy to feel left out of the loop when it comes to information. And that’s one of my chief complaints about the game and this doesn’t just apply to traffic, but the things like zone demand, abandoned buildings and city services, all of these work together in a symbiotic system of controlled chaos, but without the proper tools to manage it, it’s easy to feel burdened by the simplest things after your city reaches a certain size.

Now, once I pass 50,000 citizens or so my city went through some major growing pains. And part of this was caused by my own negligence and naive a tape. But most of the time I felt like it was because I wasn’t told what was going on and had to really break everything down via trial and error. For instance, your city not only has healthcare, but death care. So hospitals are just as important as cemeteries and crematoriums, which are constantly sending out hearses to pick up the dead. That’s all well and good, but the thing is if a single person dies and they’re not hauled off in time, then the entire building they were in is abandoned and must be demolished.

Seriously. It can be a 100 story skyscraper, but if a person on floor 42 dies of old age and everyone moves out, so you have to tear down the entire building. So you’d better have decently optimized traffic flow, or basically everything in your city is going to fail. Here’s an example of the domino effect that really quickly takes place, where you have a single person that dies, but the her’s can’t reach them in time.

So the building is abandoned. Then the building catches fire because it’s an increased fire hazard, but the fireman can’t get there because they’re caught in traffic with the hearses. Then the building burns down and criminals start moving in because the land value decreased. And then you’ve got more police cars on the road, which only adds to the initial traffic problems you had in the first place.

It’s a vicious cycle that gets out of control fast. If you’re not keeping an insanely close eye on things. And I would prefer to see some of this information displayed more clearly. Being able to see a service building’s area of effect and vehicle routes would be great as what an indicator of why a building was abandoned, because abandonment is a red flag for all sorts of things, not just dead bodies at the same time, though, once I started to figure these systems out the challenge and fixing them is hugely rewarding games like cities, XL and SIM city five were entirely too easy.

And if you screwed those cities up, that was a real feat of ineptitude. Here a doomed city can arise from something as simple as building a couple of intersections instead of a multi-lane traffic circle. And that’s kind of awesome. But while we’re on the subject of small gripes, why can’t I edit the terrain during gameplay on most maps?

It’s no problem since you want flat land, but on those with geographical challenges, even just some basic terrain smoothing tools would be great as what, a way to place trees using a brush tool since placing them individually is super tiresome. Also, why is there no day, night cycle? You do get some neat features to adjust the color palette of the game, but it’d be nice to be able to see my city at night, just for an occasional change of scenery.

But another nice thing is that if you tire of the prefab maps, you can try the built-in map editor there’s immediately made me realize just how much I miss being able to edit the terrain in SIM city five. These tools are intuitive and powerful just as they should be letting you create anything. You’ll find in the pre-made maps and play freely with the games, dynamic, water simulation. Though I do wish you could at least use some of these tools while you’re building cities. As you can only do this externally before you start playing, there’s also an asset editor, which reminds me of the old SimCity 2000 urban renewal kit. Here, you can edit existing buildings, roads, and objects. Or you can import and create your own using external 3d models.

Thimbleweed Park

If you were a fan of the classic LucasArts point-and-click adventure games from the 90s, Thimbleweed Park is a must-play. Created by the game design dream team of Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick, also known as the visionary designers of 1987 adventure classic Maniac Mansion, Thimbleweed Park puts you in control of five zany characters working to uncover the town’s deadly secrets.

The vibe is X-Files meets Twin Peaks, and the gameplay is straight out LucasArts’ heydey. Thimbleweed Park uses classic inventory and verb mechanics for puzzle-solving, but it also feels super modern, thanks to standout voice acting and beautifully detailed environments. Plus, longtime point-and-click fans will find plenty of thoughtful nods to the games that came before. Finally, a use for that chainsaw!

Day of the Tentacle Remastered

Speaking of Maniac Mansion (and when are we not?), its 1993 sequel Day of the Tentacle got the remaster treatment in 2016, bringing one of the funniest, most creative games of all time to modern systems. DOTT was widely regarded as a masterpiece throughout the 90s, and unlike many other games from the era, it holds up wonderfully. Time travel? Sentient tentacles? A plan to enslave humans? Making a time capsule with Thomas Edison? Day of the Tentacle has it all.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Often used as a bit of a measuring stick for gaming performance, at least until more recently, the reboot of Tomb Raider by Square Enix can run on all manner of machines. As the third entry in the rebooted series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider comes with graphical enhancements. But it also brings the trilogy to a neat conclusion to the action-adventure series.

Taking place in Central America and Mexico, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, mixes realistic action with a good dose of fun, all wrapped around a story that sees Lara Croft work to prevent a series of cataclysms, as well as the machinations of paramilitary organization Trinity. At the same time, Croft confronts her own role in solving and preserving the world’s secrets. Final Fantasy XIV

As far as MMOs go, Final Fantasy XIV checks all the boxes for those looking to disappear into an online adventure. This Square Enix MMORPG, which takes place in the expansive Final Fantasy universe that put the publisher on the map, did what was once considered impossible: knocked World of Warcraft off its throne as the most-played RPG. In fact, FFXIV so popular that Square Enix occasionally has to halt new sales so as to not overwhelm the system.

Final Fantasy XIV didn’t have the most straightforward path to success. Critics despised its initial version, and fans largely ignored it. It wasn’t until the MMO’s 2013 “2.0” patch that things began to improve. Since then FFXIV has become an award-winning behemoth. Get in while the getting’s good; you never know when sales might stop again!

The Flame in the Flood

In a world decimated by a post-apocalyptic flood, a young girl named Scout and her loyal doggo must traverse a lengthy waterway in order to find something resembling hope for the future. If this description feels vague, that’s on purpose. Part of the joy of The Flame in the Flood is discovering new things as you go along. The roguelike nature of this indie darling from The Molasses Flood means that starting over is part of the process, but it only makes reaching the end all the more satisfying.

Exploration, crafting, scavenging and resource management are all part of the process, and keeping Scout alive is no easy task. It’s a grueling-but-delightful journey, and it’s got a killer soundtrack, to boot.

Diablo III

Blizzard Entertainment has long been a Mac-friendly developer and publisher (and hopefully its recent acquisition by Windows-maker Microsoft won’t change that!). As such, it came as no surprise when the long-awaited Diablo III launched day-and-date on OS X and Windows in 2012. Nearly a decade later, the hack-and-slash gameplay is still a ton of fun, especially when played cooperatively with a friend or two. Fire up your Mac and turn on voice chat, and you’ve got a great Friday night ahead, running and looting your way through the dungeons of Sanctuary.

Oxenfree

Oxenfree is many things: a coming-of-age story, a mystery, a graphic adventure and a weird-as-all-get-out game in general. The indie title from Night School Studio follows a group of teenagers on an overnight island campout, which should alert you to the fact that things are about to go terribly wrong. There are paranormal forces at work on this island, and protagonist Alex needs to uncover its confusing landscape if she wants to have any hope of surviving until morning and making it back to solid land.

Celeste

Like Stardew Valley, platformer Celeste is the recipient of a Take This Dr. Mark Award for its thoughtful portrayal of mental health issues. Unlike Stardew, however, Celeste could hardly be described as chill or Zen. It’s a brutally challenging platformer, in which many of the obstacles represent mountain-climbing heroine Madeline’s internal struggles. Those who struggle with anxiety and self-doubt will find Madeline’s journey relatable, and the game handles those serious issues with care. And even though you’ll die — a lot — the next chapter never feels impossibly out of reach.

Unpacking

Uber-challenging games aren’t for everyone, so if “Zen” and “chill” are more your speed, you should absolutely take a look at Unpacking, one of the best games of 2021. Unpacking is exactly what it sounds like: You’ll unpack boxes in a series of homes, organizing their contents in cabinets, shelves and closets. With every article of clothing, every poster and every stuffed animal you unpack, you’ll learn more about the person whose contents you’re unpacking, even if you never see them.

Unpacking is a phenomenal achievement in video game storytelling, and shows that there are still new ways to unravel a narrative. We’ll forgive you if you overlooked this gem when it came out last November, but don’t sleep on it any longer.

Graveyard Keeper

Imagine Stardew Valley, but instead of a farm, you have to maintain a graveyard. There’s still plenty of crafting and agriculture involved, but your responsibilities also include embalming and burying (or cremating) corpses before they decompose. Oh, and you’ve also been thrust through time after being hit by a car, and find yourself in a vaguely medieval world. The only way to get home is to be the best gravekeeper you can be, while befriending the villagers, leading church sermons and researching new technology.

Despite the grim subject matter, Graveyard Keeper really hits the same soothing sweet spot as other farming sims. Unlike other open-ended simulation games, this one has a story that fully wraps up, although we won’t blame you if you don’t want to go through that portal, and instead remain among the corpses.

Gone Home

It’s 1995. It’s late at night, and you’ve just returned from your trip abroad to find your family home empty. Instead of watching My So-Called Life or playing Super Nintendo, you realize that your sister is gone, and your parents are nowhere to be found, either. This first-person exploration game manages to be creepy as heck, despite not having any combat, and with every dark room and secret compartment you explore, you’ll find more pieces of the puzzle.

It’s best to go in knowing as little about Gone Home as possible, and the whole thing takes only about two or three hours to complete. The story, however, will stick with you a whole lot longer.

Cuphead

With visuals inspired by the golden age of American animation, Cuphead is easily one of the most stylish games of the last five years. But just because it’s cartoony doesn’t mean it’s easy. In fact, Cuphead’s hectic run-and-gun gameplay and epic boss battles have earned it a reputation for being quite difficult in the near half-decade since its original release. With the long-awaited expansion pack The Delicious Last Course dropping later this year, now is the perfect time to catch up — provided you’re looking for a challenge.
