Xiaomi Redmi Note 8t 32gb Smartphone Review

Redmi Note 8T review. a smartphone with a head start

While the Redmi Note Pro line of smartphones continues to be the leader of the middle segment, Xiaomi does not stop and releases smartphones, say, not a flagship reserve, but with all the necessary parameters for a slightly more sophisticated user than usual. Meet the Redmi Note 8T review.

The hero of our review, if you immediately start with an attempt to position it, is somewhere between the cheaper Redmi Note 7S and the more expensive Redmi Note 8 Pro. And if you remember the fact that the Redmi Note series of smartphones has always been recommended for purchase, being the best offer in terms of price and quality, then it is twice as interesting to understand what Redmi Note 8T is. Well, let’s try to find out together.

Redmi Note 8T is a high stakes player

Redmi Note 8T positions itself in the smartphone industry, where there are already enough competitors of varying degrees of quality: Samsung with its new products; Motorola with smartphones running a clean operating system; Realme, which is rapidly gaining popularity. Xiaomi has made a big bet with the release of the Redmi Note 8T. The device attracts with its quad camera and fast charging support, and this is the smartphone that, despite its rather boring appearance, can gain immense popularity.

What’s in the box?

  • smartphone itself
  • Silicone Case
  • 18W power adapter
  • USB Type-C cable
  • a clip to remove the SIM tray

Yes, an 18W fast charging adapter is now included in the box, which is nice. It would be nice to find headphones in the kit, but Xiaomi does not change its traditions, always making up the same package regardless of the smartphone.

Let’s start with the dimensions of the device. Redmi Note 8T has the following dimensions:

The design of the Redmi Note 8T contains more of the Redmi Note 7S than the Redmi Note 8 Pro. If the latter has a luxurious design that does not in any way correspond to its cost, then Redmi Note 8T immediately gives out a middle-class smartphone in itself. Its design is already a hackneyed theme of a “sandwich” made of glass and metal, which would have easily pulled the design of a flagship and even a premium device a few years ago, but today it is already a familiar minimum in a smartphone from Xiaomi.

The Redmi Note 8T has a 6.3-inch display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 tempered glass, and the same glass covers the back. The display, by the way, is surrounded by not particularly large frames, which are painted in the color of the case. a new solution, but still questionable. The bottom frame is a small chin with the company logo. Alas, the Redmi Note 8T has no LED indicator.

If you have already held Xiaomi smartphones in your hands at least once, then you will definitely not have any problems with the ergonomics and control of Redmi Note 8T, all the buttons are located in their usual places: on the right side there is a power button and a volume rocker, a SIM card tray on the left. bottom USB Type-C port and 3.5 mm audio jack with speaker. All buttons are knocked down, they are pressed well, there is no rattling, the assembly is of high quality. The phone even has an IR sensor, which today is no longer used for data transmission, but is well used for controlling home appliances.

As already noted, the back panel is made of tempered glass Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and has a nice gradient fill, there are three options for sale: black, blue and white. The traditional fingerprint scanner is centered on the back. it’s fast and accurate. The main module of four cameras is located in the upper left corner, it sticks out strongly enough, so you have to take care of buying a good case so that the smartphone does not cling to the edges of the s and does not sway from touching while it lies on the table with the screen up.

Overall, the design of the Redmi Note 8T is not bad and will appeal to the vast majority. If you want something more, then Redmi Note 8 Pro to your attention, for other money, of course.

  • diagonal: 6.3 inches
  • technology: IPS-matrix
  • Resolution: FullHD
  • protection: Corning Gorilla Glass 5, oleophobic coating

The display of the Redmi Note 8T is not bad, but there are enough better displays in the world, although not everything is so critical. From the factory, the display of the smartphone has not very accurate calibration, since the color rendition is deviated towards cold tones. This sufficiently affects how pictures and videos look on the screen. Everything would be bad if this moment could not be corrected by simply going into the screen settings. Fortunately, in the case of the Redmi Note 8T, this is possible. Choosing a more neutral color profile solves all color problems, making it natural.

Unlike some competing smartphones, such as the Moto One Macro, the Redmi Note 8T’s 6.3-inch display is FullHD. This resolution on this display looks more than adequate, icons and text are clear, graininess is not observed, reading long web pages is a pleasure.

The declared brightness of the display is 450 nits, we checked it and indeed: the maximum screen brightness of the Redmi Note 8T hovers around 430 nits. Again, this is not the brightest display on the market, but if you do not often walk in the sun, then this should not cause you problems.

Performance

  • processor: Snapdragon 665
  • architecture: 4 cores Kryo 260 Gold with a frequency of 2.0 GHz and 4 more cores Kryo 260 Silver with a frequency of 1.8 GHz
  • graphics video adapter: Adreno 610
  • RAM: 4/6 GB
  • permanent memory: 64/128 GB
  • Dedicated microSD card slot

The Redmi Note 8T is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor, which does not differ much from the Snapdragon 660 found in the Redmi Note 7S. The processor itself is made using an 11 nm process technology, which should make it more energy efficient. In general, performance differences will be noticeable only in synthetic tests, in practice Redmi Note 8T copes perfectly with everyday tasks and allows you to play the most current gaming news often with maximum graphics settings.

We tested the smartphone in various benchmarks and the expectations from the Snapdragon 665 were confirmed: in the AnTuTu test, the phone scored 170,973 points, which is higher than the Redmi Note 7S or the same Moto One Macro.

Battery

  • capacity: 4000mAh
  • fast charging: supported, up to 18W
  • there is a corresponding adapter included
  • no wireless charging support

In the entry-level segment of smartphones, devices are already starting to appear with batteries with a capacity of up to 5,000 mAh, and the Redmi Note 8T has a 4,000 mAh battery. However, this does not detract from the autonomy of the smartphone, which will work quietly throughout the working day. Even intensive use of the device does not allow it to be discharged so quickly that there is no charge left for calling a taxi in the evening.

No less important is the fact that finally in the initial segment of smartphones, the manufacturer adds support for a fairly powerful fast charging, and even with the appropriate adapter in the package. Fully charging the smartphone takes just over two hours. Unfortunately, Redmi Note 8T does not support wireless charging, but you probably didn’t expect to see it in a smartphone for that kind of money.

Software

  • MIUI 10
  • Android 9 Pie

MIUI has long established itself as the friendliest and most customizable skin on Android. Xiaomi releases global updates for its smartphones every year, supporting some of them for 3 years or more. Surely at the time of reading this review, Redmi Note 8T received an update to MIUI 11 with Android 10 on board.

  • main camera consists of four modules
  • 48 MP main module (Samsung QW1), f / 1.8
  • 8 MP wide-angle lens, f / 2.2
  • 2 MP macro lens, f / 2.4
  • 2 MP f / 2.4 depth sensor
  • selfie camera 13 MP, f / 2.0

It seems that the camera set in budget smartphones has evolved a lot. If the main 48 MP sensor remains the same as in Redmi Note 7S, then there are three more sensors nearby: ultra-wide-angle, macro and depth sensor for creating an accurate bokeh effect.

Positioning

Redmi Note 6 Pro is designed for buyers who want to buy a good smartphone with a capacious battery and a high-quality display, but are not ready to spend more than 20 thousand rubles on it. Of course, in such a scheme, various nuances and little things appear, which they saved on (no NFC, microUSB port). The company partially “smoothes” them by the similarity of the Note 6 Pro’s appearance with the same iPhone X. “It looks similar, but costs four times less,” an inexperienced buyer thinks and takes Xiaomi. And not the fact that it turns out to be wrong.

The key advantages of the Redmi Note line are a large, high-quality display, a capacious battery, good operating speed and an excellent price. The combination of these advantages has not changed over the years, except that in recent generations they began to add an AI camera to them.

Design, dimensions, controls

Let’s call a spade a spade. The design of Redmi Note 6 Pro is very similar to the look of the iPhone X. This also applies to the back cover with a vertical dual camera, and the notch in the display. I don’t like this approach ideologically, but in everyday use you don’t pay attention to it. over, in terms of practicality, there are no problems. The back cover is made of aluminum, it is resistant to scratches and fingerprints.

There will be three versions of the smartphone on sale: pink, blue and black. The last one was just on our test.

On the right side there is a volume rocker and a power button, on the left there is a tray for two nanoSIM and a microSD card. Hybrid slot.

Below you can see a microUSB port, an external speaker mesh and a microphone (stylized as a speaker). Above. a second microphone, headphone minijack and infrared port.

Two front cameras, light and proximity sensors, indicator light and earpiece are hidden in the display cutout. And on the back are a dual camera and a fingerprint scanner. The latter is very fast, there were no problems with it.

The dimensions of the model are 157.9 x 76.4 x 8.3 mm, the weight is 182 grams, and it feels comfortable in the hand. The smartphone is weighty, but not heavy.

Compared to Apple iPhone 7 Plus

In terms of assembly, I did not notice any problems during use.

Overall, I liked how the main camera of the Redmi Note 6 Pro shoots. If we talk about low light conditions or night shooting, the device copes well. Unless, of course, you zoom in 10 times and look at individual pixels. Also, the dual camera allows you to take portraits with a blurred background. it turns out, in my opinion, well. By the way, background blur is available for the front camera as well. Video shooting is in maximum FHD resolution, no optical stabilization.

The camera interface is standard for MIUI, the main modes are accessible by horizontal swipes, and the settings are called up using the button in the upper left corner.

The main change in the display compared to the Redmi Note 5 is a slight increase in resolution and a notch in the screen. Also note that in the latest models, Xiaomi uses on-screen buttons and full screen mode.

The latter allows you to hide them in some applications. All the settings for these little things are in the “Full screen” section. there you can adjust the position of the onscreen buttons, enable full screen mode for individual applications and activate gesture control. How do they work? The on-screen buttons are hidden, and to return to the previous menu, you need to swipe from left to right from the edge of the screen, to return to the main screen. swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen, and to bring up the latest applications. make the same swipe, but hold your finger on the screen after swipe.

The display itself, according to my feelings, has hardly changed, it still has a good range of brightness, natural color rendition, many settings, to which the ability to hide the notch has been added (it is located in the same “Limitless Screen”). Below are screenshots of settings.

An unpleasant disadvantage of the cutout in the display is the lack of a battery indicator. In one of the previous reviews, our readers noted that this problem will be solved in MIUI 10.

Battery

Characteristics Value
Battery capacity 4000 mAh
Battery type Fixed, Li-Ion
Operating time in HD video viewing mode at maximum brightness (airplane mode is on) 15 hours
Discharging in sleep mode (12 hours, display off, Wi-Fi on) 3%

The strong point of the Redmi Note line has always been battery life. A capacious battery, together with MIUI optimization, allows you to squeeze 4-5 hours of a display on from a smartphone. This includes mobile internet, automatic syncing, web surfing, mail, instant messengers and social networks. But there is still no fast charging in the smartphone, and this is a minus.

Memory, chipset, performance

Characteristics Value
Chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 636
CPU Octa-core, 1.8 GHz
Video accelerator Adreno 509
The amount of RAM 3 or 4 GB LPDDR4X
Internal storage capacity 32 or 64 GB eMMC 5.1
Memory card slot Yes, hybrid

In terms of performance, no changes have appeared in comparison with the Redmi Note 5, however, they are not particularly needed here. The device runs on a fairly productive Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, which is enough for most of the use cases. The smartphone heats up only in powerful toys and during benchmarking.

Good “average”

Redmi Note 8T is a 6.3-inch Fullview LCD smartphone with 2340 x 1080 pixels (Full-HD) resolution and a very convenient 19.5: 9 aspect ratio. In addition, it runs on an 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor, running Android v9.0 (Pie), and offers several modifications with 3/4 GB of RAM and 32/64/128 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded to 256 GB.

High-quality shooting with four cameras

Fast battery charging

The smartphone is made of Gorilla Glass on the front and back, providing a comfortable and more importantly durable shell and is equipped with a 4000 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging.

Improved user interface

The smartphone is equipped with its own user interface. MIUI 10 looks a little more mature and tidy compared to earlier versions. App icons are redesigned and font sizes are customizable.

Xiaomi has also adapted Dark Mode and expanded the Always-on display. Always-on allows users to view information such as times, received messages and appointments, etc. on a locked smartphone. Since the display is activated less frequently, the device saves energy.

“Wide” range of sensors and interfaces

Connectivity options on the Redmi Note 8T include Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, GPS, Bluetooth v5.0, Infrared, NFC, 3G and 4G, USB Type-C.
