Xiaomi Redmi Watch 3 Active, analysis and opinion: the cheap smartwatch to do the right exercise

After more than a week testing this new Redmi Watch 3 Active We have all the necessary information to give you an opinion about this watch, but also with doubts and some final conclusions that can help you make a purchase decision.

The first thing we have to make clear before analyzing this watch is that although the name can be misleading, it is tremendously similar to the Redmi Watch 3 that we had already analyzed.

The differences are, in essence, that Redmi Watch 3 Active has a larger but LCD screen and no always-on mode, a simpler strap system, surprisingly less physical activity than the normal model and no Alexa voice assistant.

Considering that it is a watch with a price below 50 euros It is not that these losses are so important, moreover, for this price range it is not bad at all considering that it keeps track of more important sports activities or a good multi-system positioning system.

But let’s get to the point, here is our experience with the Redmi Watch 3 Active.

Features and technical sheet of the Redmi Watch 3 Active

Optical heart rate sensor

Optical blood oxygen sensor

Microphone and speaker for calls

Design and screen: an inferior screen, but that is not noticeable on a day-to-day basis

Xiaomi Redmi Watch 3 Active It is a cheaper version of the Redmi Watch 3 and this is starting to show through the most important thing, the screen. To save costs, Xiaomi has chosen an LCD screen instead of an AMOLED panel, which affects several things: the color quality is lower, the brightness is lower and it loses the always-on screen mode.

This is not to say that the screen looks bad, actually although I am used to AMOLED screens in watches because the Apple Watch S4 and currently the Watch Ultra is my watch for daily use, I do not notice such a drastic loss as I have noticed in other cheaper watches where the LCD screen and the low resolution is noticeable.

You will only find a physical button that works to wake up the screen if you don’t have to raise your hand to activate it automatically or open the list of available applications. It also has a hole with a microphone on the same side and on the opposite side an opening where the speaker is housed.

The official Xiaomi strap is made of silicone, but as a novelty it has a new, more standard connection system with a clip system to be able to remove it more easily. This will be quite good because it will open up the possibility of buying more straps in stores like Amazon or AliExpress.

In short, we have a quite elegant watch that goes unnoticed and that does not clash with any look. All in about 41 grams that weighs with the strap. Nothing bad.

App and monitoring: you will quantify even your naps

The operating system of Redmi Watch 3 Active is the same as Redmi Watch 3, the so-called RTOS (Real Time OS) and is extremely basic. It is not a watch to which you can install applications and forget about multitasking, which is one of its big problems.

If you are doing a sport you will not be able to open another application. The lack of apps is a problem, but at least the ones it does have are advanced enough to display a lot of information.

You will be using the My Fitness app which is available for iOS and Android, although we have to warn you that at least in my tests I have had several problems using an iPhone, for some reason workouts linked to an iPhone were not saving GPS data. With an Android without any problem.

If you have not used a Xiaomi watch or bracelet before and this is your first experience with Mi Fitness, you will be pleasantly surprised. It has a lot of information collected by its sensors and all displayed in a simple and easy to understand way.

As an example, the graphs and information that you obtain from an activity, in this case going for a walk (the best sport that almost everyone should practice) where you will find your heart rate, the cadence of the steps, your stride and even the training zones.

You have all the information of the activity, but the best thing is when you have several weeks saved and you can create a trend line. That is when you will be able to see how by doing a little sport you will notice how your body improves, especially in your heart rate and blood oxygenation.

Something that draws our attention is that despite the fact that this watch is submersible up to 5 atmospheres (50 meters) and you can put it in the pool, does not have swim trackingsomething that the Redmi Watch 3 does have.

Xiaomi Red Rice 1S обзор Quke.ru

Continuing with the topic of health, we have to talk about the fact that it has a heart rate and blood oxygen sensor that works 24/7. It also has a good system that measures the quality of your sleep.

I have mixed feelings about the sleep monitoring system. On the one hand, it perfectly detects naps when there is a short time (between 30 and 60 minutes), but nights are another story.

According to my Apple Watch Ultra I have slept about 5 hours and 37 minutes, compared to 6 hours and 36 minutes that Xiaomi says. The sleep distribution graph is very irregular, with totally different zones of wakefulness or essential sleep between the two systems.

On the other hand, the heart rate and blood oxygen data are practically identical to what I get with an Apple Watch and a dedicated pulse oximeter.

There are also discrepancies in the quality of the GPS signal. For such a cheap watch, the integrated GPS of the Redmi Watch 3 Active is quite good. In open areas without buildings it is very fast to catch satellite coverage, problems begin in urban areas, especially between tall buildings, something where all clocks have problems.

In our tests we have seen details of positioning quality, especially it tends to cut in turns or corners. There is also a lower ping speed to the satellites, which can be seen in these details compared to a Watch Ultra. The comparison may seem unfair, but I just want you to see the discrepancies between a 50-euro watch and a 1,000-euro watch, they are minimal, but they do exist.

Finally, we want to highlight the customization of the Redmi Watch 3 Active spheres. According to Xiaomi, there are more than 200 that you can choose from in its application, which, honestly, we have not counted, but you will find options for all tastes, including some customizable ones where you can put your photos.

Autonomy: about 6~7 days if you do sports, more than a week for normal use

Xiaomi indicates that the autonomy of this Redmi Watch 3 Active is up to 12 days of normal use, up to 8 days with intensive use. The problem is how to measure what is normal and what is intensive.

my reality is this: Watch at 100% charge, receiving mobile notifications, typically performing one to one hours of GPS activity per day, brightness slightly below half, Arm-up wake-up mode, the battery has lasted 6 days until we reached 20%which is not bad.

In an hour and a half you can have the watch fully charged thanks to the USB cable and 2 magnetic pin connection included in the box.

Keep in mind that brightness and GPS will be the main culprits for reduced autonomy.

Conclusion: is the Redmi Watch 3 Active worth buying?

Xiaomi’s low-cost sports watch with monitoring of more than 100 activities, 1.83″ screen and a battery of up to 2 weeks or 8 days with intensive use.

Are you an inactive person but want to get more exercise, like going for a 30-minute walk every day that has incredible positive benefits for your health? Do you work standing up and want to measure your daily steps? Do you want the benefits of a smartwatch but for a really reasonable price? Then Redmi Watch 3 Active is a watch for you.

For a price that does not exceed 50 euros, I think that the functions and specifications offered by this watch are more than justified.

Redmi Watch 3 active is the watch to start doing sports without spending a lot of money, which can even be your first smartwatch to move on to a more advanced model in a few years.
