Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S Screen

Furthermore, most of the other television has the maximum refresh rate of 120Hz for the television motion graphics to refreshed twice which means that the refresh rate is two times of Mi LED TV 4S refresh rate.

This doesn’t mean that the other television that has a refresh rate of 60Hz doesn’t perform better.

over, the Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S 55-inch has a Viewing angle of 178 degrees. The angled viewing of a flatscreen television is calculated based on the height and width of the television.

The 178 degrees viewing angle indicates the better visible look of images on the television screen the higher the viewing angle the better the quality view of the images. The maximum viewing angle in all television system is 180 degrees.

Xiaomi Mi TV 4A 32 inches. detailed review and customization of the most affordable Android TV

Greetings! Today we will talk about the most affordable TV in the Xiaomi TV line, with a diagonal of 32 inches and a resolution of 1366×768, which is based on Android 6. The TV is good, but requires some preparation for work (localization) and the installation of a useful set of applications. I will tell you how to almost completely get rid of Chinese, which applications work well on TV and how to install it all.

You will also find out my personal opinion about the TV, all its strengths and, of course, disadvantages. And in order to immediately dot the i, I will immediately express my opinion about the screen resolution. Many will say that it is 2018 and 4K TVs are already starting to come in, and here is a pitiful HD. With this I only partially agree. Firstly, there is a small diagonal. 32 inches and from a distance of more than 3 meters when watching a video, I personally do not see any difference. I put 2 HD and Full HD TVs side by side on purpose. And secondly, such TVs are often taken as additional, for example, in the kitchen or in the nursery. In general, why am I doing this? Besides, if you do not use it as a monitor, then the resolution is sufficient, many people watch HD projectors with a diagonal on the entire wall. and nothing, their eyes have not burst. Therefore, I will not attribute the screen resolution to any pros or cons. this is just its feature, due primarily to its low price. But even if you are an ardent opponent of such a TV, do not rush to close the review, because if you are, in principle, interested in Xiaomi TVs, it can be useful. The fact is that in older models with a larger diagonal: 43 inches, 49 inches. Full HD resolution; 55 “, 65”. 4K resolution, uses a similar skin that only has Chinese by default. There is no international firmware and it may never be, so revision is required with your own hands, on your own. But in fact it is very simple, I spent no more than a couple of hours on everything, most of which I was looking for useful information. But first things first, I propose to get acquainted with the technical characteristics first:

The box itself is also made of standard cardboard, and inside the insert is made of dense foam. In general, the chance of damaging content in transit is minimized. On the box you can see the Mi hare and the abundance of Chinese characters. TVs are currently sold mainly within China (at least officially), so initially everything is only in Chinese.

The kit included a small instruction, legs with a set of screws and a remote control.

The compact remote control with a minimum of buttons fits perfectly in the hand. A finger reaches out to all controls. There are navigation buttons in the form of a conditional cross and “ok” in the middle, buttons for working in the system (menu, home, back) and volume control buttons. Everything is very simple, nothing more. The plastic is rough, not easily soiled. The transmitter is powerful, you do not need to play the sniper, aiming the receiver at the TV. The only thing missing for the ideal is the air mouse function, because some Android applications are not adapted for the remote control and you have to connect a regular computer mouse via USB, which, by the way, is also an option. At least for the initial setup, a mouse is needed, but then you can completely get by with the remote control.

The appearance is quite pleasant and modern, the plastic does not look cheap and does not have an unpleasant smell.

The legs are attached to the base with two screws each. With the legs, the TV is stable, does not wobble. The minimum depth of the surface where the TV is planned to be installed is more than 180 mm, because it is precisely this width that the “legs” are spread.

The surface of the screen is matte and does not glare from light, visually the TV seems to be very thin. Although the central part with the board is 9 cm thick.

Frames are small: 1.1 cm at the top and 1.4 cm at the sides.

In the lower part there is a small Mi logo, under which there is an LED, which actually lights up only during system boot and has not been seen anywhere else. The IR receiver from the remote control is also located here. There are no problems with sensitivity, within the room the signal reaches from any angle.

In the lower part in the center there is a physical on / off button. Downward-facing speakers are located to the left and right of it. The speakers are quite large, the specifications indicate the power of 2 to 5W. The volume is high, for watching movies and TV programs I usually use 30% volume. The sound is dominated by mid-range frequencies and at high volume the TV just starts “yelling”, so for lovers of high-quality sound it is better to connect an external audio system. In the system settings, you can turn on Bass Boost, which adds a little low frequencies, volume appears. In general, the sound is normal, especially for a budget TV. I have LG from the same price category in my kitchen, but the sound is much worse there.

Xiaomi Mi TV 4S 43 “Russian Edition: viewing and setting up terrestrial and Internet channels

Xiaomi Mi TV 4S 43 finally, it’s time to customize it, or rather one of its main functions. watching television channels. But even here it was not without pleasant surprises, since Mi TV is a smart thing and designed for convenient and comfortable use.!

So, first things first. The entire line of Xiaomi Mi TV, officially presented on the Russian market, has a built-in tuner that supports the two most popular broadcasting standards: DVB-T2 (terrestrial) and DVB-C (cable). This means that to watch your favorite channels (digital and analog), you just need to plug into the tuner the cable coming from your antenna or from your cable TV provider, make settings and enjoy watching. In the case of cable TV, you may need a CAM module with a decoding card that plugs into the CI slot on the back of the TV (CI version). At my disposal was only an ordinary outdoor antenna for receiving digital (DVB-T2) and analog broadcasting.

TV channel control and navigation system.

If the number of channels in your list is so large that it will take a long time to flip through them in the way above, then you can use the second, more suitable method for this. To do this, simply click on the right arrow of the same ring-shaped joystick to bring up the on-screen keyboard, on which you can dial the channel number you need:

Internet broadcasting or forget about antennas and extra wires!
There are situations when you simply do not have an antenna cable or the antenna itself at home, or it is not on a particular wall, on which you decided to hang the TV after repair, and you simply cannot live without your favorite TV channels. And in this case, Xiaomi took care of its potential customers by implementing the ability to watch television over the Internet. Those inside the proprietary PatchWall shell already have a separate tab, which is called that. TV Channels, where a huge number of channels are collected that you can watch, either for free (a standard set of familiar channels) or paid (by subscription), and all this splendor in good quality will become available to you immediately after connecting your Smart TV to the Internet.

This scenario has a number of significant advantages: you don’t need extra wires;
– no need to buy any additional set-top boxes and satellite dishes;
– you do not need to pay separately for cable TV, because you get access to channels via the Internet;
– only one remote control is needed to work, and the functionality and quality that you get are much more thought out (quality and quantity of content, the possibility of deferred viewing.)

All this, it seems to me, is the main ideology of Xiaomi. give your client the maximum amount of convenience and functionality for a moderate price tag. That’s all, thank you all for your attention and respect to those who got to these words.!

Micrographs of the matrix

The revealed characteristics of the screen suggest that this TV has a VA type matrix. Micrographs do not contradict this (black dots are dust on the camera sensor):

The subpixels of three colors (red, green and blue) are divided into four regions with domains in different orientations. Such a device is, in principle, capable of providing good viewing angles, which is facilitated by the variation in the orientation of the LC in the domains. To provide a wide dynamic range in brightness, some of the subpixels are turned off or their brightness is greatly reduced when the brightness of the output hue decreases. For example, a dark gray field looks like this at not very high magnification:

As a result, if you sit at a distance at which 4K resolution differs from Full HD, then many shades look “loose” with a visible mesh structure. If you sit further away, then this mesh is not visible, but the advantage from 4K resolution is already disappearing. And when working on a PC, in the case of some fonts, the period (.) Is simply not displayed. this is how the “brains” of the TV optimize the image. There is even more harm from such management of subpixels than from replacing part of the triads of subpixels with a white subpixel.

Note that there is no visible “crystal effect” (microscopic variation in brightness and hue) in this case.

Commutation

The table with characteristics at the beginning of the article gives an idea of the communication capabilities of the TV.

The connectors are standard, full-sized and more or less loosely placed, with the exception of the unit with dual USB ports. There is no automatic switching to the input with an appearing signal if it is absent at the current one. Basic HDMI cross control support works: TV turns on when connected BD player is turned on, and TV turns off BD player when turned off. You can connect external speakers or headphones to the TV via Bluetooth. Headphones (more precisely, a headset) could also be connected via USB, but the microphone on the headphones did not work.

Review of the 55-inch “smart” 4K LCD TV Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S 55 “on Android TV

Measurement of viewing angles

To find out how the screen brightness changes when you deviate from the perpendicular to the screen, we carried out a series of measurements of the white brightness in the center of the screen in a wide range of angles, tilting the sensor axis in the vertical, horizontal and diagonal (from corner to corner) directions.

Decrease the brightness by 50% of the maximum value:

Direction Angle, degrees
Vertical −26/26
Horizontal −29/28
Diagonal −28/28

Note a smooth, but still relatively fast decrease in brightness when deviating from the perpendicular to the screen in all three directions, while the grayscale brightness graphs do not intersect in the entire range of measured angles. In terms of the rate of decrease in brightness, the viewing angles are relatively narrow. The brightness of the black field increases with a deviation from the perpendicular to the screen, but only up to about 0.55% of the maximum brightness of the white field. This is the average result for this type of matrix. Contrast in the angular range of ± 82 ° for two directions is significantly greater than 10: 1 and only for the diagonal direction it is lower, but still does not fall beyond this mark.

To quantify the change in color rendition, we carried out colorimetric measurements for white, gray (127, 127, 127), red, green and blue, as well as light red, light green and light blue fields in full screen using a setting similar to that that was used in the previous test. The measurements were carried out in the range of angles from 0 ° (the sensor is directed perpendicular to the screen) to 80 ° with a step of 5 °. The obtained values of the intensities were recalculated into the deviation ΔE relative to the measurement of each field at the perpendicular position of the sensor relative to the screen. The results are presented below:

A deviation of 45 ° can be selected as the reference point. The criterion for maintaining the correctness of colors can be considered a value of ΔE less than 3. It follows from the graphs that when viewed from an angle, the primary colors change slightly, but the halftones change significantly, which is expected for a VA matrix and is its main drawback.

Remote control and other control methods

The remote is small and lightweight (60 g with batteries). The body of the remote control is made of plastic with a black matte surface. Button labels are large enough and contrasting. The buttons themselves are very few. This deficiency is partially corrected with the help of a virtual remote control with numbers, which appears on the screen in the TV-program viewing mode when you press the right side of the cursor dial.

This remote works via Bluetooth. The pairing of the remote control with the TV, required for operation via Bluetooth, must be performed by the user when the TV is turned on for the first time. The TV responds quickly to commands from the remote control. There is a microphone hole in the front end of the remote control. Google’s voice assistant is launched by clicking on the colorful button with a microphone on the remote, or it can also be launched from the home page. This assistant will help you find content that a number of programs provide.

Voice search can also be launched in a number of programs in which there is a circle with a microphone to the left of the input line.

However, there is no direct integration with the TV itself, that is, the voice will not be able to switch TV channels, change the volume, etc. When the microphone is activated while watching TV channels, the sound is not muffled, but the microphone selectivity is high, so quite loud phrases uttered by the user are well recognized. If any USB devices are connected to the TV, the remote control microphone is sometimes muted. To enable it, it is enough to disconnect these devices and reconnect (if they are needed).

Coordinate input functions, such as a gyroscopic mouse, are not available on the standard remote control. The limited capabilities of the remote control in the case of such a “smart” TV can be compensated for by connecting a keyboard and mouse to the TV. These input devices work through a USB hub. You can connect USB storage devices at the same time via a splitter. The mouse was also connected via Bluetooth, but our keyboard via Bluetooth did not work, however, maybe this is a feature of this keyboard. it does not work with all devices. The mouse and keyboard, with some restrictions, work in the interface of the TV itself and in programs. The delay in the movement of the mouse cursor relative to the movement of the mouse itself is small, but still felt. The right mouse button displays a list of properties. The scroll wheel is working. In the case of a keyboard, some shortcuts from the main and secondary multimedia set are supported. It is convenient to use third-party programs to change the layout on the physical keyboard. It is inconvenient that to cancel / exit you need to press the special navigation key [back], not [Esc]. Not every keyboard with multimedia keys has this button. Switching between programs is performed by the traditional combination [AltTab], but during switching the list of programs is not displayed, which is inconvenient. It should be noted that in general, the interface is well optimized for using only the complete remote control, that is, it is not necessary to connect a keyboard and mouse. The proprietary application Mi Remote controller with this TV for some reason does not work.

The software platform for this TV is Android TV, which is the successor to Google TV. The installed version of Android TV is based on the OS Android 9. From standby mode, the TV turns on quickly: after about 9 seconds, the image is already displayed, but for some time the programs and the shell may slow down. If there was a power outage or the TV was turned off, then the system restarts again, and this already takes much more time. about one minute. The hardware configuration is explained by the data of the CPU-Z program:

The manufacturer claims 8 GB of internal memory, of course, less is available. The internal memory of the TV can be accessed using the built-in FTP server.

The home page on Android TV is a series of horizontal ribbons with tiles of installed apps and recommended content. The caption circles on the left explain what the content of the feeds refers to and allow you to run the corresponding program. At the top of the page there are icons-buttons for voice and text input of the search bar, for displaying system messages, selecting inputs, for accessing settings and hours.

Home page settings allow the user to change something on it.

There is also an alternative version of the home page called Patch Wall from the manufacturer, but it does not provide any special advantages from our point of view.

The home page from Google can be called with the button of the remote control with the image of a circle, and Patch Wall. with the button with the inscription Mi.

There are not very many image settings. They are accessible from the settings menu invoked from the home page.

Also, the settings are available through the context menu (call. pressing the center button of the cursor block on the remote control) in the form of a strip with circles without switching to the home page.

This context menu is available when watching TV programs and when connected to a PC, but for some reason it is not called up when connected to a BD player. There are several preset picture profiles, in one of them the user can change a number of additional settings.

The interface is translated into Russian, the translation quality is good.

Play multimedia content

There is support for Chromecast. Video and sound can be transferred from an Android tablet (static images are good, watching videos is bad). Also, from a PC running Windows 10 from Google Chrome, you can transfer a copy of the image in the current tab (in 1080p resolution) and a YouTube video as a link for playing on TV.

In superficial testing of the playback of multimedia content, we limited ourselves to a number of files launched mainly from external USB drives. UPnP (DLNA) servers can also be sources of multimedia content. We tested 2.5 ″ hard drives, external SSDs and regular flash drives. The two hard drives tested worked without problems from the USB port without additional power. Note that the TV supports USB drives with FAT32, exFAT and NTFS file systems, and there were no problems with Cyrillic names of files and folders. The TV player detects all files in folders, even if there are a lot of files on the disk (more than 100 thousand).

It makes little sense to test the playback of audio files using the built-in player, since there will certainly be a third-party program that will handle this well and as convenient for the user. In the case of raster graphic files, the capabilities of the built-in player are worth discussing, since only it can play these files in a true resolution of 3840 × 2160. All third-party programs, like the OS itself, display a static image at a resolution of 1920 × 1080. However, both the built-in player and third-party programs can output video in true 3840×2160 resolution using hardware decoding. A number of video streaming software, namely YouTube, ivi and okko (Megogo is questionable) can output 4K video. However, only in the case of YouTube, the video quality was confirmed using test clips. YouTube videos in HDR mode are not played. SDR version is selected.

We have confirmed the ability of the built-in TV player to display bitmap graphic files in JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP formats. In general, the functionality of this player is very limited.

Mi 4K TV 4S 43 inc Full Setup

In the category of common formats, the TV media player does not support playback of some legacy video file formats, but they can be played back up to Full HD resolution using software decode such as MX Player. Modern high-definition files are very likely to play in hardware decoding, up to H.265 in UHD @ 60fps. It supports playback of HDR10 and HLG video files, and in the case of files with 10 bits per color, according to visual assessment of the gradation of hues, more than 8-bit files. 4K HDR video files play fine in the case of MP4 and M2TS containers (HEVC, HDR10), and pale in the case of MKV and WebM containers (VP9). Supported audio decoding of at least AAC, AC3, DTS and MP3 formats. Disc images can only be played by files, no menus, etc.

Test videos to determine the uniformity of frame rotation helped to reveal that the TV, when playing video files, adjusts the screen refresh rate to the frame rate in the video file, but only at 50 or 60 Hz, so files with 24 fps are played with alternating frame lengths of 2: 3. In the standard video range (16-235), all shades are displayed. The maximum bitrate of video files, at which there were no artifacts yet, when playing from USB media was at least 120 Mbps, over a wired Ethernet network. only 34 Mbps, and over Wi-Fi (5 GHz). 70 Mbps. In the last two cases, the media server of the Asus RT-AC68U router was used. The statistics on the router show that the Wi-Fi up / down speed is 866.7 Mbps, that is, the TV has an 802.11ac adapter.

The volume of the built-in speaker system for a living room, corresponding in size to a given screen diagonal, can be considered sufficient. There are high and medium frequencies, there are practically no low frequencies. The stereo effect is pronounced. There are parasitic resonances of the case, but there is no rattling even at high volumes. The sound is harsh, but in general, for the class of acoustics built into the TV, its quality is acceptable.

The volume margin when using headphones at 32 ohms with a sensitivity of 112 dB is large, the level of background noise is lower than audible, low frequencies are already present, the sound quality is good. However, the difference when connecting headphones with a built-in DAC via USB is felt very well, and it is not in favor of the analog TV channel.

Working with video sources

Cinema modes were tested when connected to a Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player. An HDMI connection was used. The TV supports 480i / p, 576i / p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p at 24/50/60 Hz. The colors are correct, taking into account the type of video signal, the brightness definition is high, although the horizontal targets are slightly blurred. Color clarity is slightly lower than possible. In the standard video range (16-235), almost all shades are displayed on the gray scale, only in highlights one shade closest to white is indistinguishable from white in brightness. In case of 1080p @ 24 fps, frames are output with interleaved 2: 3 duration.

In most cases, the TV does an excellent job of converting interlaced video signals into a progressive image, even with the most intricate alternation of half frames (fields), there is practically no output by fields. When scaling from low resolutions and even in the case of interlaced signals and a dynamic picture, the edges of objects are smoothed. the teeth on the diagonals are very weak. Video noise reduction functions very well without causing artifacts in the case of a dynamic image.

When connected to a computer via HDMI, we got an image output in a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels with a frame rate up to 60 Hz inclusive. In the case of a 4K signal with original color definition (RGB output), the actual image is displayed on the TV screen with a very noticeable decrease in color definition.

Under Windows 10, HDR output to this TV is possible by selecting the appropriate options in the display settings. At a resolution of 4K and 60 Hz, the output is in 8-bit per color mode, supplemented by dynamic color mixing, apparently with the help of a video card at the hardware level. At 24 Hz. 12 bits per color:

Playback of test videos with 10-bit color and smooth gradients showed that there is much more gradation than with simple 8-bit output without HDR. However, the presence of dynamic color mixing is visible to the naked eye. Test HDR videos with real and test images were displayed with good quality according to subjective feelings. The maximum brightness in HDR mode is the same as in SDR mode, also the color gamut is not wide (see below), so HDR support is nominal, but still there.

What do they give as a gift?

When purchasing Mi TV with a diagonal of 55 inches, access to subscriptions to online cinemas and video services is provided as a gift: ivi, OKKO, KinoPoisk, MEGOGO, TVZAVR, 24chasaTV, MegaFon TV for 6 months. Gift activation period: until December 31, 2019, that is, on January 1, it will no longer be possible to activate subscriptions, but you can on December 31 and receive six months as a gift.

Screen

I got the TV with the largest screen: 55 inches, 4K HDR resolution, 60 Hz refresh rate. In fact, the TV menu works in Full HD, and 4K turns on only when there is appropriate video content. For example, expensive premium TVs always run in 4K and try to use artificial intelligence to “pull” content.

The declared brightness of the screen is 220 nits, in line with the measured. Minimum brightness. 28 nits.

It’s a clear day, the curtains are open. Good picture

The screen has no PWM (does not flicker at low brightness). The sRGB color gamut on the TV is 100%. No glare on black background.

There are options in the settings that allow you to customize the screen a little. For example, the picture can be warm, cold, or default. I, to my shame, did not see the difference. You can also change the brightness. No auto-tuning. In general, the change in brightness is not too foreseen by the manufacturer, since the screen settings are hidden on the third level of the menu and the brightness scale turns manually rather slowly. Would increase the speed in the next firmware, or something.

Some users asked questions in our telegram channel. They asked about INPUT LAG (this is the processing time of the signal from the source to the display). Since I did not have special equipment, I took the advice: I connected a laptop via HDMI and started the stopwatch. As you can see, on TV there are 239 thousandths of a second, and on a laptop screen. already 272 thousandths. It turns out that the input lag is 33 ms.

There was also a question “Do all ports support connecting a 4K 60p set-top box.” Answer: all.

There was also a question about how HDR works on PS 4 Pro. Answer: HDR works, but read the HDR section below.

The TV has declared support for HDR. I decided to add a small educational program on HDR. Initially, many manufacturers began to add HDR inscription to their devices, investing in it rather a marketing sense, since the HDR standards have not yet been determined.

Then the major manufacturers Samsung, LG, Hisense, Toshiba, Sony, Dolby, Netflix and others that are members of the UHD Alliance, having discussed the state of affairs, announced the Ultra HD Premium certificate, which includes the minimum requirements for HDR. Thus, HDR does not mean “true” HDR. But it is important to note that, for example, Sony refused to use the Ultra HD Premium logo, deciding to promote its own 4K HDR label.

However, it is important that minimum HDR standards have been established. They include a number of parameters. I will put a plus sign for those values that Xiaomi MiTV has:

  • 4K resolution
  • 10-bit color
  • Minimum 90% DCI P3 color gamut (none, see picture below)
  • There are two options for OLED and LED. For OLED, the brightness should be at least 1000 nits, but we have an LED TV, so the brightness should be more than 540 nits for white and less than 0.0005 nits for black (Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4S has a brightness of 220 nits for white and 0.6 nits for black)

Accordingly, in the case of Xiaomi TV, HDR content looks visually more interesting than normal, but this should not be confused with HDR, which is played on premium TVs.

Difference between models

Xiaomi introduced three models with different screen sizes: 55 inches, 43 inches and 32 inches.

  • The two older models have 4K resolution, the younger one has 1366 × 768 pixels.
  • Differ in sound power: 10 W, 8 W and 5 W, respectively.
  • Older models are given six months of subscriptions as a gift, the youngest. 3 months.
  • 2 GB 8 GB of memory for the older ones, 1 GB 8 GB for the younger
  • No fiber optic port on the younger model

User experience and smart features

I thought that it would be most optimal to tell in points.

  • The TV’s brightness is at the level of 5-8-year-old models, but it is quite comfortable for viewing. I have a south side and the sun shines during the day. There is glare on the screen, but you do not notice it as you concentrate on the image, not on the reflections.
  • However, dark scenes are best left for the evening.

Dark scenes are best left for the evening. Here on the TV you can clearly see me, the stool that I brought to draw the curtains, behind the stool there are scales from Xiaomi. I was too lazy to shoot films from the TV.

The TV can work perfectly as a second monitor.
