Windows 10 Doesn’t See iPad 3

If your device is not recognized when you connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to your computer using a USB cable, use the following instructions.

If the computer does not recognize the connected device, an unknown error or error code 0xE may be displayed. In this case, follow these steps, trying to connect the device after each of them.

  1. Make sure your iOS or iPadOS device is unlocked and the Home screen is displayed on it.
  2. Make sure the latest software is installed on your Mac or Windows computer. When using iTunes, make sure you have the latest version installed.
  3. Make sure the device is turned on.
  4. If the question “Trust this computer?” Appears, unlock the device and click “Trust.”
  5. Disconnect all USB accessories except the device from the computer. Try connecting the device to other USB ports. Then try using a different Apple USB cable
  6. Restart your computer and iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
  7. Try connecting the device to another computer. If you experience the same problem on another computer, contact Apple Support.

Below are additional instructions for resolving this issue on a Mac and Windows computer.

On a Mac

  1. Connect your iOS or iPadOS device and make sure it is unlocked and the Home screen is displayed on it.
  2. While holding down the Option key on your Mac, go to the Apple menu and select System Information or System Report.
  3. In the list on the left, select USB.
  4. If the iPhone, iPad, or iPod appears in the USB structure section, install the latest macOS or the latest updates. If your device does not appear, or you still need help, contact Apple Support.

On a Windows PC

Follow these steps to reinstall the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.

  1. Disconnect the device from the computer.
  2. Unlock your iOS or iPadOS device and go to the Home screen. Then reconnect the device. If iTunes opens, close it.
  3. Press and hold (or right-click) the “Start” button, and then select “Device Manager”.
  4. Locate and expand the Portable Devices section.
  5. Find your connected device (for example, Apple iPhone), right-click its name and select “Update Driver”.
  6. Select the option “Automatically search for updated drivers”.
  7. After installing the software, go to the “Settings” Updates and Security Windows Update and check for other updates available.
  8. Open iTunes.

If you downloaded iTunes from the Apple website

Follow these steps to reinstall the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.

  1. Disconnect the device from the computer.
  2. Unlock your iOS or iPadOS device and go to the Home screen. Then reconnect the device. If iTunes opens, close it.
  3. Press the Windows and R keys to open the Run window.
  4. In the Run window, enter:

  5. Click the OK button.
  6. Right-click the usbaapl64.inf or usbaapl.inf file and select the Install option. Other files starting with usbaapl64 or usbaapl may be displayed. Install the file with the extension.inf. If you are not sure which file to install, right-click on an empty area in the Explorer window, and then select “View” and “Table” in order to display the file types. You need to install a file of type “Information for installation.”
  7. Disconnect the device from the computer, then restart the computer.
  8. Reconnect the device and open iTunes.

If the device is still not recognized

Check in the device manager if the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed. To open Device Manager, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Windows and R keys to open the Run window.
  2. In the Run window, enter devmgmt.msc and click OK. The “Device Manager” window should appear.
  3. Locate and expand the “USB controllers” section.
  4. Find the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.

If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not displayed or “Unknown Device” is displayed:

  • Connect the device to the computer using a different USB cable.
  • Connect the device to another computer. If you experience the same problem on another computer, contact Apple Support.
