Why iPhone XS is more expensive than iPhone 11

Cameras

Cameras are good on two smartphones. the iPhone XS Max was one of the best camera phones of 2018. Now there is a new “iPhone” that takes better pictures, which is expected. The main sensors on phone cameras are identical, but differences in software aLGorithms and processors play an important role.

Next. a comparison of the quality of photography from the cameras of two phones. iPhone 11 Pro and XS Max.

Since the main sensors and processors are identical in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro Max models, below are the images from the iPhone 11 Pro and XS Max.

iphone, expensive

Obviously, the “eleventh” photographs better in low light. It is at night that his strong qualities are revealed. When shooting during the day, you will not notice any serious differences in quality. And one more thing: the new iPhone has a wide-angle camera, the XS has less useful telephoto optics.

Screens

The iPhone 11 is a compromise flagship for little money (by Apple’s frame), and the main compromise here is the screen. The phone has an IPS-matrix with a diagonal of 6.1 inches, the resolution is 1792 × 828, which gives a pixel density of 326 PPI. HDR10 and Dolby Vision support not declared.

The iPhone XS Max has the TOP matrix. it is a 6.5-inch OLED screen, with a resolution of 2688 × 1242, Dolby Vision and HDR10 support. Already these parameters make it clear that the screen is better on the XS Max.

Screen test results:

In all respects, the display is better on the iPhone XS Max, but the matrix on the “eleventh” is also good.

Processor and performance

The iPhone XS Max is powered by the Apple A12 Bionic processor, a powerful 6nm chip with advanced graphics and an 8-core neural processor capable of processing up to 5 trillion operations per second. However, these numbers say little.

The iPhone 11 has a new generation chip. Apple A13 Bionic with a more advanced neural processor with 8 cores, its main task is to implement Deep Fusion technology for the camera and night mode. Of course, the GPU has also been improved. it is 20% more powerful and 15% more energy efficient compared to the graphics on the Apple A12 Bionic.

Further. the results of performance testing:

iPhone 11 iPhone XS Max
GeekBench 4.1 (single core) 5477 4777
GeekBench 4.1 (multi-core) 13882 11432
GFX 3.1 Manhattan (1080p offscreen) 121 99
GFX 3.1 Car scene graphics test (1080p offscreen) 76 60
AnTuTu 7 419453 353210

Both smartphones deliver high performance and power headroom for years to come. Still, iPhone 11 is more powerful, so it wins in hardware.

iPhone 11 vs iPhone XS Max. who’s cooler?

iPhone XS Max is Apple’s top flagship of 2018. Of course, this is a cool smartphone, but is there any point in taking it when the iPhone 11 is available for sale, and for less money. Let’s figure it out.

Price comparison

Comparison of characteristics

The main differences are in screens, processors, cameras are slightly different. Further. in more detail.

Battery and autonomy

The batteries on smartphones are of approximately the same size (3110 mAh and 3174 mAh), the differences are minimal, but we are interested in the battery life:

iPhone 11 iPhone XS Max
Continuous conversations, screen off 17:45 h 16:08 h
Internet surfing, brightness 200 cd / m2 15:29 h 11:06 h
Video playback, brightness 200 cd / m2 18:43 h 13:43 h
Charging speed (5W adapter included) 18% in 30 minutes (5W adapter included) 18% in 30 minutes

In terms of autonomy, the iPhone 11 wins. This is logical, since it is equipped with a more energy efficient processor that consumes less energy. Fast and wireless charging is available on both phones, but the corresponding adapters are not included.

Conclusion, pros and cons

  • It is cheaper
  • IPS-screen (for an amateur)
  • There is a wide-angle camera
  • There is a function of shooting 4K / 60 FPS on all cameras, including front and “wide”
  • powerful processor for better night mode and Deep Fusion technology (better shooting quality)
  • Higher autonomy
  • Best OLED Screen Support HDR10, Dolby Vision
  • There is a telephoto camera
  • Steel frame

Camera. 2x anti-ultra-wide zoom

The ultra-wide-angle camera module in the iPhone 11, in my opinion, shoots averagely. During the use of the smartphone with this camera, I took the least number of photos, which, I think, speaks for itself. I don’t need super-width. Of course, such a camera opens up new possibilities in mobile photography and allows you to get interesting results, but most often it all comes down to the fact that you turn on super wide, you see that the quality of the photo does not shine, and you switch back to the main camera. especially if all this is happening in a room where the difference between modules is most noticeable.

The double zoom is another matter. Everything is clear and simple. The optional 12-megapixel module in the iPhone XS doubles the image, straightening proportions and lines, very close to 55mm. As for me, it’s just gold. Photos from this particular camera are most easily passed off as taken on a large DSLR, adding a little magic to the lightroom. The 2x zoom allows you to look at the sign across the road while standing still and take a picture of the task on the board without getting up. In general, as you understand, for me the additional camera of the iPhone XS turned out to be more useful than that in the iPhone 11.

Dimensions. XS fits comfortably in the hand

In the fall, I was lucky enough to spend a week with the iPhone 11 as my primary smartphone, which gave me some food for thought. First, I’m definitely not a fan of big smartphones. Secondly, the iPhone 11 is exactly like that. It would seem that a couple of millimeters here, a little there and just a little here, but the difference is enormous. In the hands of the iPhone XS it feels like a crumbs, easy to use, and 11 is a frank “fat man”. Of course, there are reasons for this. the iPhone 11 has a larger screen, thicker bezels and a larger battery. but I concluded that I get little pleasure from using such a device. over, even in a case, the iPhone XS remains usable with one hand, which cannot be said about 11. In general, if you, like me, are a fan of smaller smartphones, you should take a closer look at the XS.

iPhone 11 is cheaper, and it’s cool, but I still bought the iPhone XS for these 4 reasons

I updated my main smartphone a month ago. Despite the fact that everyone around me advised to take a closer look at the fiercely popular iPhone 11, I opted for last year’s XS. Why? In addition to some subjective reasons, there are also quite objective thoughts, which I have outlined below.

OLED display with thin bezels

Perhaps the main difference between smartphones, which immediately catches your eye, is their displays. While the iPhone XS has a gorgeous OLED panel with a high resolution of 1125 × 2436 pixels and an unbelievable 1,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, the iPhone 11 only boasts an HD display with a 1,400: 1 contrast ratio. Moving away from numbers, in real life, the iPhone XS has a clearer, brighter and more vibrant screen. Do not be afraid of the disadvantages typical of OLED matrices, namely oversaturated colors and deviations in green tones. Apple has done a great job calibrating this display, and therefore it is just perfect for photo editing and content viewing. Among other things, the OLED display allowed engineers to make the bezels much thinner. it not only looks attractive, but also allows you to make the smartphone trite, which I will talk about in the next paragraph.

Premium body materials. surgical steel versus aluminum

The iPhone XS is the flagship, the iPhone 11 is the cheaper version of the flagship. It is clear that the word “cheap” is in principle inappropriate here, but it is so. Apple had to economize on something. When you take XS in your hand, a certain solidity, premium quality is immediately poured over it. It is cold, weighty and. glassy. This is difficult to explain, but I personally did not experience similar emotions when using the iPhone 11. On the contrary, it seemed cheap: matte aluminum edges, thick body, frames, again. Perhaps it’s also a matter of color, as the XS is only sold in black, white and gold, while the 11 has a whole palette. The XS feels more expensive anyway.

Of course, the iPhone 11 has a number of advantages over the XS, which can be discussed in a separate article, but almost two months after the purchase, I still have not regretted it. Summing up, I will say that I can recommend the iPhone XS to those who:

Packaging, equipment and covers

The iPhone XS Max box is made in the traditional Apple style and differs from the iPhone XS box. than? That’s right, in size.

The main feature of the package is the absence of an adapter from Lightning to a minijack (3.5 mm), which the iPhone X had, but the iPhone XS lacks. All that we think about this, we expressed in the last article, but here we will find fault with another point: the charging unit for both iPhones is also identical: 5 in 1 A. It is strange that the larger Apple model does not come with a two-amp charging, like the iPad. The author of the article at home charges the iPhone X with a charger from the iPad, and it turns out much faster than using a native iPhone.

We described the situation with covers for the new generation in an article about the iPhone XS, here the situation is similar, with the only difference that covers, of course, are more expensive. So, for Folio you will have to pay 11 thousand rubles. We preferred the leather case for “only” 4500, and this is perhaps the most practical option. Silicone ones are cheaper by a thousand rubles, but they quickly lose their appearance and, of course, do not look so solid. However, as a disadvantage of the leather case, we note that the side button is pressed very tightly in it.

Cameras

The main camera of the iPhone XS Max is identical in characteristics to that of the iPhone XS. In addition, the same features are available here as in the iPhone XS. in particular, changing the depth of field in portrait mode after shooting. We will not talk about them in detail, since we have already covered this issue in the article about the iPhone XS, but we will show you photos and videos taken on the iPhone XS Max in real life. Pictures and videos were commented on by Anton Soloviev.

Despite the increased pixel area, the camera hasn’t gotten much better. And if in the previous article we noted some improvements in the iPhone XS camera compared to the iPhone X, then they were noticeable only when comparing images of two cameras per pixel. Perhaps the enlarged sensor made it possible to slightly reduce noise and increase detail, but it is still small, even smaller than that of the simplest compact cameras, so you should not expect outstanding results from it. The results cannot be attributed to the fact that the pictures taken with the main camera lacked illumination, since they were taken during the day, although not very sunny. Nevertheless, in some places small details merge even in the foregrounds, and artifacts from the noise reduction are already visible in the light shadows. That is, there are improvements, but insignificant.

With the telecom it is still sadder. For some reason, the manufacturer does not manage to achieve good detail in images, which is so important when shooting portraits. Of course, no one will look at individual cilia in front of their eyes, but when they are not separated, the overall impression of the portrait inevitably deteriorates. Yes, it’s stupid to demand such detail from a tiny camera, but it is positioned as a portrait camera, but in fact it can only be used as an optical zoom. Also, “noisy” shadows on the face spoil the impression: they will not be noticeable on the smartphone screen, but on a laptop monitor or when printing. quite.

Of course, Apple spoiled us, trying to squeeze the maximum out of a small sensor, but, unfortunately, the maximum has been reached, and the picture will not become noticeably better as long as the sensor is used approximately the same size. It seems it’s time to move at least 1 / 2.3 ″ so that, taking into account the experience gained, you can compete with compact cameras in terms of image quality. But in this case, the camera will stick out of the smartphone body even more.

The camera turned out to be good, as always, but it is still a smartphone camera, and there is no need to talk about more serious things here. We are already used to waiting for a revolution from Apple, at least a very small one.

Traditionally, everything is fine with video: high detail in 4K, smooth frames, almost complete absence of blur. But with a lack of lighting, everything changes dramatically: smears appear, and noisy ripples, and even exposition walking in places.

The other day we told you about the iPhone XS, now it’s time to talk about its “older brother”. the iPhone XS Max. True, he is older only in the sense that his size is larger, and the price is higher. Otherwise, the capabilities and characteristics of the two XS smartphones are identical. But this does not mean that the iPhone XS Max does not deserve special attention.

Our task was to find out the following: firstly, how exactly the increase in the display (and, consequently, the resolution) was realized in terms of design and software component, secondly, how convenient it is to use the screen, and thirdly, did the changes affect the quality of the display, and fourthly, what is the situation with autonomous work. At the same time, in the performance test, we decided to compare the iPhone XS Max with the main Android competitors. In general, there is something to talk about, so make yourself comfortable.

Design

Now let’s compare the looks of the iPhone XS and XS Max. Yes, of course, the first thing that catches the eye is the size of the screen. They are impressive and delightful. It would seem, well, what’s wrong with that? Well, they increased it even more. But I really want to look at the screen and enjoy how much information gets in and how comfortable it is to read it. This is the first, purely emotional impression.

But it is worth paying attention not only to this. Firstly, the width of the bezel around the screen, as well as the area of the “monobrow” of the iPhone XS Max, is exactly the same as that of the iPhone XS. Therefore, the increase in size is solely due to the usable working area of the screen. It is impossible not to note this as a plus.

The second point: the size of the side buttons for both models is identical, as well as their location relative to the top border of the screen. That is, if you hold the iPhone XS Max from the bottom, then it will be more difficult for you to reach them. And this decision is logical from the point of view of aesthetics, but, perhaps, not from the point of view of convenience.

However, if you have used any iPhone with the word Plus in the name before, then the iPhone XS Max will not seem overly large to you. We compared the dimensions and feel of the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone 8 Plus: despite the fact that the XS Max’s screen is significantly larger (6.5 versus 5.5 inches), its dimensions are not only not larger, but even slightly smaller. In general, the sensations from them are about the same. That is, yes, the iPhone XS Max has the largest screen in the entire history of the line, but not the largest body.

This brings us to the tough choice between the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XS. Many people are afraid to switch to the XS Max. it seems that the iPhone X already has a large screen, but it itself is quite compact. Should you give up the usual size? The answer will be this: if you have used iPhone Plus before and you were comfortable. feel free to take the iPhone XS Max. If, using the “plus”, you experienced at least a little discomfort due to its size and suffered this discomfort only because the screen of the “regular” iPhone seemed too small, then you better choose the iPhone X / XS. Even its 5.8-inch is still bigger than the iPhone 8 Plus.

As with the iPhone XS, the XS Max is IP68 waterproof, allowing the phone to be submerged in fresh water up to two meters deep for up to half an hour; in addition, Apple notes that glass is more durable than in previous generations, both on the front and back. And, of course, the new Gold color is also available for the Max version.

Let’s compare them with the iPhone XS in order to clearly demonstrate how the characteristics of the new product differ, as well as with key competitors that will further appear in the performance comparison. Note that instead of Asus Zenfone 5Z, this table could well be, for example, Xiaomi Mi 8 or LG G7 ThinQ. they run on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and with the same 6 GB of RAM. And the screen size and resolution are almost the same for all these models.

As for the comparison of the two iPhones, as we have already noted above, the difference is only in the size and resolution of the screen (while the number of PPIs remains unchanged), as well as in the battery capacity. Well, as a consequence of the above. in the change in size and weight. So let’s take a closer look at the iPhone XS Max itself.

Review of the flagship and most expensive smartphone Apple iPhone XS Max

Performance

The SoC specifications and storage capacity of the iPhone XS Max are exactly the same as those of the iPhone XS. The smartphone runs on the new Apple A12 Bionic platform, the amount of RAM is 4 GB. In our review of the iPhone XS, we compared its results with the iPhone X in order to understand what the performance gain is relative to the previous generation, now let’s see how the largest model compares against the background of Android competitors.

Let’s start with the browser benchmarks: SunSpider 1.0.2, Octane Benchmark, Kraken Benchmark, and JetStream. On the Apple smartphone, we used Safari, on Android models. Chrome.

Apple iPhone XS Max
(Apple A12) Samsung Galaxy Note 9
(Samsung Exynos 9810) Asus Zenfone 5Z
(Qualcomm Snapdragon 845) SunSpider 1.0.2

And here the iPhone XS Max crushes opponents to the head: the difference is at times. It is clear that it is in these benchmarks that the browser can play a big role, but the user doesn’t care. he uses the main browser, and that’s it.

Why iPhone XS Is SO Expensive. Tim Cook Explains.

Now let’s see how the iPhone XS Max performs in complex benchmarks AnTuTu and Geekbench 4.

Apple iPhone XS Max
(Apple A12) Samsung Galaxy Note 9
(Samsung Exynos 9810) Asus Zenfone 5Z
(Qualcomm Snapdragon 845) AnTuTu

4808 3708 2444
11563 9117 8819
22153 14599

There is no such clear superiority here, although the iPhone XS Max is still the winner. And if in AnTuTu he barely snatches victory from the Asus Zenfone 5Z, then in Geekbench he bypasses rivals confidently.

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to GPU performance testing. We used 3DMark and GFXBenchmark (in the case of iOS, the Metal version). GFXBenchmark Metal for iOS has two new scenes: Aztec Ruins and Car Chase (it was previously only available for Android devices in the GFXBenchmark GL version). When the Android smartphones were tested, the Aztec Ruins scene was not yet there, so there are no results in the table. Recall that Offscreen tests are displaying a picture in a fixed resolution, regardless of the actual screen resolution.

Why The iPhone XS Is Better Than The iPhone 11

What happened? Samsung’s flagship is left behind, it’s obvious. But the Asus smartphone even surpassed the iPhone in some subtests. Apparently, the fact is that the screen resolution of the Asus Zenfone 5Z is lower. it only wins in Onscreen modes. But even in Offscreen, the difference between them is not so big.

Next test: 3DMark. All results are in points.

Apple iPhone XS Max

And here’s the surprise: Asus overtakes Apple. There is an assumption that the Sling Shot Extreme subtest is different in the iOS and Android versions of the benchmark, so you need to be careful with this result.

In general, we can state that the new generation iPhone (including the iPhone XS Max) is the most productive smartphone on the market. It significantly outperforms its main competitor. Samsung Galaxy Note 9. On the other hand, models based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, including the Asus Zenfone 5Z, are stepping on its heels, especially in GPU tests.

All differences are brief

Screen. the contrast has doubled, the brightness. by 30%, but 3D Touch is gone.

The processor is more powerful, but it is needed only for video processing, in other tasks the gain will not be noticeable.

Camera. A third ultra wide-angle lens has been added, allowing you to capture a wider angle when shooting. Added several software improvements for photos and videos. Frontalka learned to shoot in 4K.

Wireless interfaces. support for Wi-Fi 6 has appeared, which may be needed at least in a year.

Dimensions. the new iPhone is slightly larger, thicker and heavier.

Case. you can drown your smartphone at a depth of 4 meters instead of 2 meters, but the warranty still does not cover flooding.

Autonomy. on paper they said 4 hours of work, in practice we will check later.

These are the changes received by the new flagships of Apple.

Camera

The most obvious differences between smartphones are in the camera module. Instead of a dual block, the iPhone received a triple camera for the first time.

The main camera has the same aperture ƒ / 1.8, “telephoto” from ƒ / 2.4 has been pumped to ƒ / 2.0, and the “super-wide” has ƒ / 2.4.

In addition to optical image stabilization, automatic correction and night shooting mode appeared.

The zoom has essentially become 4x when comparing extreme values. And in fact, when switching to a telephoto lens, a two-fold increase occurs, and when switching from a conventional to an ultra-wide lens, a two-fold decrease.

Flash is brighter and Smart HDR is smarter.

High dynamic range for video is available at up to 60fps versus 30fps for the iPhone XS. When shooting video, 2x zoom in and 2x zoom out is also possible.

Support for Audioozum and QuickTake chips is announced, which will only work after the first tests.

Front camera can now shoot in 4K at 24, 30 or 60 fps versus 1080p at 30 or 60 fps.

How the iPhone 11 Pro differs from the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

After the presentation of the new flagships from Apple, we decided to understand all the differences between the gadget and last year’s smartphone.

The iPhone XS is officially being phased out, but resellers will be selling off leftovers for a few more months. It’s time to understand whether it is worth saving for a new product or you can take a cheaper generation.

Now let’s go through all the differences between the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone XS.

Wireless interfaces

There was another significant difference under the hood of the new flagship.

iPhone 11 Pro supports Wi-Fi 802.11ax with MIMO technology. This is the so-called Wi-Fi 6.

The technology is new with a huge backlog for the future. In theory, the bandwidth of the new standard is up to 6 Gbps. Of course, you need an appropriate router to work.

According to analysts’ forecasts, the share of devices supporting Wi-Fi 802.11ax by the end of 2020 will be equal to Wi-Fi 802.11ac devices, and by 2023 it will almost completely displace them from the market.

Housing and dimensions

Despite the external similarity, there are slight differences in favor of last year’s models.

IPhone 11 Pro dimensions: 144 x 71.4 x 8.1mm and weighs 188g.
IPhone XS Dimensions: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm @ 177g.

IPhone 11 Pro Max dimensions: 158 x 77.8 x 8.1mm @ 226g.
IPhone XS Max Dimensions: 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm @ 208g.

As you can see, even the absence of a special layer that recognizes the pressure force did not allow leaving the new product in the same size.

In the specifications on the official website of Apple, the material of the case of the new models is textured frosted glass and stainless steel. The predecessor had only stainless steel combined with ordinary glass.

A new dark green color has been added to the already familiar colors (silver, “space gray” and gold).

For the iPhone XS, it is declared waterproof against water when immersed to a depth of 2 meters for up to 30 minutes, and for the new iPhone 11 Pro. up to 4 meters for up to 30 minutes.

However, both models comply with IP68 and IEC 60529 standards.

Screen

Physical dimensions, resolution and diagonal in both versions (Pro and Pro Max) remain the same.

Only the quality of the matrix differs. Last year’s flagships used Super Retina HD screen, which gave way to Super Retina XDR in new products.

The advantage is expressed in an increased contrast ratio of 2,000,000: 1 versus 1,000,000: 1 and better brightness 800 cd / m2 versus 625 cd / m2.

But the lack of 3D Touch can be called a small downgrade. The novelty screen does not recognize the force of pressing. No wonder the Cupertinians were wise with this feature in the beta versions of iOS 13.

Autonomy

At the presentation, they proudly announced that the new iPhone 11 Pro is capable of working 4 hours longer than its predecessor, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max model. 5 hours.

An excellent result, last year’s flagship was only 30 minutes ahead of its predecessor according to this criterion.

CPU

Traditionally, the new iPhone features the next generation A13 Bionic processor with 3rd generation Neural Engine.

Comparison in synthetic tests will see after the appearance of the iPhone 11 Pro on sale.

In practice, the performance gain in most tasks will not be noticeable. Last year’s flagships can cope with a serious load without any problems, there is enough power with a margin.

The only task that will require increased performance is working with video.
