Where’s the WI-FI password on the router. How to remember the WI-FI password

How to know your Wi-Fi password, or what to do if you forget your password?

In every article on setting up your router, or in the instructions on how to change passwords, I suggest writing down somewhere the password you set on your home Wi-Fi. Or set a password that you won’t forget, but it needs to be strong enough. As you understand, few people do this, I honestly do not write anything down either:) And the password, it is such a thing that if you forget it, it is very difficult to remember, you try a bunch of options and nothing fits. And here we just need to connect a new device to your Wi-Fi. In this article I will tell you what to do in such cases. How to recover the forgotten password from the Wi-Fi network, where to see it in the settings of your computer, or the router itself. I will try to write in detail about all the nuances, possible problems and not to miss anything.

How you can find out the forgotten password from your Wi-Fi:

  • Check the password in the settings of the computer, if you have already connected (or are connected) to the network, the password from which we need to know.
  • Check the password in the Wi-Fi router’s settings.
  • Reset your router, set it up again and get a new password.

We will start with the easiest, it is of course the computer. If you have a laptop (or PC with an adapter). which was already connected to your Wi-Fi, or is currently connected, then most likely we will be able to look in the settings of the password, which we have successfully forgotten.

Wi-Fi security key (PIN) and other factory information

What information can be found on the router:

  • The network name, or SSID, is the factory name of the Wi-Fi network. It may be useful to find your network among neighboring networks. It usually looks like this: “TP-LINK_3Ao8. Of course, on TP-Link devices.
  • Wi-Fi password, Wireless Password, PIN, WPS/PIN is the factory access key to the wireless network. It usually consists of 8 digits. But it could be more complicated. After entering the router‘s settings, I recommend changing the factory default password, as well as the network name.
  • Router address (IP, web address). this address is needed to enter the router settings. Can be as IP address, usually 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1, or hostname (of letters). For example: tplinkwifi.net, my.keenetic.net, miwifi.com. At the same time, the access by IP-address also works.
  • Username, Password. factory username and password, which must be specified on the login page when entering the settings of the router or modem. We usually change them while configuring the router.
  • The MAC address also comes in handy. Especially if your ISP is binding by MAC-address.
  • Router model and hardware version (Rev, H/W Ver). can be useful, for example, to find the firmware or other information.
  • F/W Ver. Firmware version installed at the factory. Not indicated on all devices.

Where on the router the WI-FI password is written

Not all users know about networking equipment and many do not know how to configure the router. That’s why every modem or router already has a number of basic settings. For example. the WI-FI network is usually already configured and you can connect your computer, laptop or smartphone to it. And now a little trick. I will tell you where the router password is written WI-FI, because without it you can not connect. Take the device in your hands and look for a sticker like this on the case:

It usually contains the manufacturer, model, serial number, IP address. Here is a written password from WI-FI, which is set from the factory. This is done so that the user can configure it not only from the computer via cable, but also from a tablet or phone. On dual-band Wi-Fi routers and access points a sticker has one WI-FI password, which is used simultaneously in both bands.

Here, the password to the Wi-Fi is written on the sticker in the “Wi-Fi Access” section.

Unfortunately, this is not the practice of all manufacturers of network equipment. For example, Asus, TP-Link, D-Link almost never indicate such information in the sticker on their routers and modems.

How to be in this case?! There is only one way out. to connect with the cable and thus already enter the web interface. This is the only place where you can see the wifi password to connect to your wireless network.

Where to see WI-FI password in Windows 10

In operating systems from Microsoft, there are two places where you can find and see the network security key.

Network Connections Press WinR on your keyboard and type the command ncpa.cpl to get into Windows 10 network connections. Here you should find the wireless adapter and right click on it to open the menu.

In the window that appears, click on “Wireless properties” to open another window. Here you have to go to the tab “Security” and check the option “Display typed characters”. In the “Network security key” field you can see the WI-FI password saved on this computer. By the way, this works not only in “Ten”, but also in Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.

Command Line The second way to find out your WIFI password in Windows. is to look it up at the command line. Right click on the Start button and select the menu item “Command Prompt (Administrator)”. In the black window that appears in the system console, type the command: netsh wlan show profiles This will show you the full list of wireless networks stored in the OS. In my example, the SSID of the desired network. rustam. Find the right one, and then type the command: netsh wlan show profiles name=rustam key=clear The command line will return the following result:

In the output we are interested in the line: “Contents of the key. This is the key phrase you are looking for.

Data encryption type

Which to choose, TKIP or AES encryption? IEEE 802 Wi-Fi standard. The 11i explicitly says: using WPA, it applies the TKIP temporary key integrity protocol, using WPA2, it applies the AES secure standard. Otherwise there may be problems with connecting devices to WI-FI wireless network.

If the Internet comes from cellular networks, and is returned via Wi-Fi, the settings will be as follows:

Change password on MTS-Connect

MTS-Connect has these characteristics by default:

To change the password, go to “Network” and “Wireless. Change the security combination in the “PSK encryption key” field in the security settings. Click on the “Change” button, the new settings are saved.

Security key and password to log in, like on other routers, is written on the back of the router. WEB-interface address in your browser. 10.0.0.1., Log in, change password and save your changes.

Megaphone.

Web interface login address. 192.168.10.1. Log in with current login and password. In the “Management” menu, go to “Key”, create a new password and save the changes.

Saved WI-FI passwords in Windows 10

If you can connect to that network from your computer or laptop with Windows 10, then to see the Wi-Fi password from it, go to Network and Internet Wi-Fi in the system settings.

There, click on the link “Configure adapter settings” to open the network connections window:

Find the wireless network there and right click on the connection. In the menu that appears, select the “Status” item. Again, the connection status window opens:

Click on the “Wireless network properties” button. In the next window, go to the tab “security” and check the box “Display typed characters”. The field “Network security key” shows the password for this WI-FI network.

If you can not connect to the network at the moment, but have previously connected to it, then you can see the WI-FI password in the saved Windows 10 profiles. To do this, open the command line with the rights of “Administrator”. In it you will need to enter a command:

netsh wlan show profile name=network_name key=clear

That is, in my case the name of the network cherdak and the command will look like this:

netsh wlan show profile name=cherdak key=clear

The result will look like this:

The command output contains a bunch of different information. We are interested in the “Contents of the key” line. this is where you can find out your WI-FI password.

Using your phone

If you have a Wi-Fi connected smartphone, running Android, you can use it to get the password. But it is important to note that this method will only help the owners of rooted devices. You can get root rights by installing rooted firmware on your smartphone, but it is much faster and easier to download and install the SuperSU program, which, incidentally, is available on Google Play.

  • After making sure that the Wi-Fi is working, open any file manager, let’s say, ES File Explorer.
  • Go to the root directory, then to the Data folder.
  • Go to the Misc directory, then go to WI-FI.
  • Find the configuration file called wpa_supplicant.conf. It can be opened with the help of any reader, including built-in ES File Manager.
  • Find the name of the network in the line ssid=”name_network” in quotes. In the next line (psk=”your_password”) is the sought password from Wi-Fi, again, in quotes.

What to do if you have changed the password, but can not access the Internet?

There are situations, when the router password has been changed, but you can not access the Internet anyway. It concerns any products equipped with Wi-Fi. For example, can not connect even via cell phone. This is caused by a problem with the old password. It is stored in the memory of the device and automatically connects using the old data.

In order to correct the problem, it is necessary to eliminate the Wi-Fi network on the device and connect to the Internet again.

If you change the password on a laptop with Windows 7 installed, the procedure is as follows:

  • Go to the “Control Panel” section.
  • After that we go to the “Network and Internet” subsection.
  • There we find “Manage wireless networks”.
  • Activate the necessary network with the right mouse button and delete it.
  • Making a new Wi-Fi network connection.

Note: If your laptop is running Windows 8 or Windows 10, you need to activate the wireless network name. There clicks on the “Forget this network” button. On your tablet or cell phone, this button may just be “Delete” instead. Once this is done, reconnect. If everything is done without errors, then the device should connect to the Internet using the newly set password to the Wi-Fi network in the D-Link router.
