Controller update

If the previous methods did not bring a positive result, the solution to the problem may be to update the port configuration. This requires:

  • Open “Device Manager” (press Win R and write the command devmgmt.msc).
  • Go to the “USB Controllers” tab and find a device with the phrase “Host Controller” in its name.
  • Click on it with the right mouse, select the item “Update hardware configuration”, and then check its performance.

The absence of such a device in the list may be the cause of the malfunction. In this case, it is worth updating the configuration of all “USB Controllers”.

Removing a controller

Another option is to remove the “host controllers”. You just need to take into account that this will stop working devices (mouse, keyboard, etc.) connected to the corresponding ports. This is done as follows:

How to Fix USB Ports Not Working in Windows 10/11

  • Open the “Device Manager” again and go to the “USB Controllers” tab.
  • Right-click and click “Remove device” (must be done for all positions with the name Host Controller).

Basically, everything will be restored after updating the hardware configuration, which can be done through the “Action” tab in the “Device Manager”. But it will be more effective to restart the computer and, perhaps, after the automatic reinstallation of the drivers, the problem will be solved.

The USB port on the laptop does not work: what to do

Reboot PC

The simplest, most popular and one of the most effective methods of troubleshooting all kinds of computer problems is to reboot the system. During this time, a reset command is given to the memory, the processor, controllers and peripherals, after which they return to their original states. Hardware, including USB ports, are rescanned by the operating system, which can make them work again.

Troubleshooting methods

You don’t have to be a computer genius to complete the steps in this article. Some of them will turn out to be quite commonplace, others will require some effort. But, in general, everything will be simple and clear.

BIOS setup

Sometimes the reason lies in the settings of the motherboard. Its input and output system (BIOS) is also capable of enabling and disabling ports. In this case, you need to enter the BIOS (Delete, F2, Esc and other keys), select the “Advanced” tab and go to the “USB Configuration” item. “Enabled” means the ports are enabled.

Checking port status

The first reason for a malfunctioning ports on a computer is their clogging. This happens quite often, since usually there are no stubs provided for them. You can clean them with a thin, long object, such as a wooden toothpick.

Most peripheral devices are not connected directly, but through a cable. It is he who can be a hindrance to data transmission and power supply. To check this, you will have to use another, obviously working cord.

Another option is the breakdown of the port itself. It should be excluded even before performing the actions described below. To do this, insert the device into a USB socket and shake it slightly in different directions. If it sits freely and moves too easily, then most likely the reason for the inoperability of the port is physical damage. And only its replacement will help here.

Windows Registry

The latter option involves making certain changes to the system registry. You can accomplish this task as follows:

  • Open the “Registry Editor” (click Win R and type regedit).
  • We pass along the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. SYSTEM. CurrentControlSet. Services. USBSTOR
  • Find the file “Start”, right-click and select “Change”.
  • If the value “4” is in the window that opens, then it must be replaced with “3”. After that, we restart the computer and check the port, now it should work.

The “Start” file may be missing at the specified address, which means that it will have to be created. This requires:

  • Being in the “USBSTOR” folder, go to the “Edit” tab, click “Create”, select the item “DWORD Parameter (32 bits)” and call it “Start”.
  • Click on the file with the right mouse button, click “Change data” and set the value to “3”. Restart your computer.

All the methods described above really work. They have been verified by users whose USB ports once stopped functioning.

USB ports not working on a Windows 10 computer or laptop. what to do?

One of the common problems on a PC or laptop with Windows 10 and previous versions of the system is the USB port does not work or all USB connectors at once. The reasons can be very different, but it can arise after installing Windows, changing PC components or without any specific preceding actions.

This manual details what you can do to fix the situation when USB ports are not working, as well as what may be causing it.

One or more USB connectors are not working

In the event that only one USB connector does not work on your computer or laptop, the first assumption is a malfunction (and it may be “inside” and a superficial examination will not reveal it), damaged, oxidized or dirty contacts of this connector.

It can also be a “burnt” port, which can sometimes be noticed by visual inspection of places inside a PC or laptop in the area where this connector is connected to the motherboard. Sometimes the USB controller chip that is not located in the immediate vicinity of the connector itself can be damaged. However, a visual inspection cannot always give a result and here it is worth contacting a workshop.

If a group of connectors does not work in your case, it can be either hardware damage to the USB controller chip, or simply the absence of original drivers for the USB controller from the manufacturer of the laptop or PC motherboard. In this case, I recommend downloading them from the manufacturer’s official website and installing them manually, and even if there are no drivers for Windows 10 on the website, feel free to install them for 7, 8 or 8.1.

Note: if you have doubts about whether the USB connector is a hardware problem or the installed system is a problem, an easy way to check it is to make any bootable USB flash drive, plug it into this connector and check if it is visible in the BIOS. If so, is it booting from it? If the drive is visible, the boot is in progress, then the hardware is in order, we are looking for a problem in the system, we install the original drivers on the chipset and, if available on the official website, on the USB controllers.

If specific devices are not connected via USB, as well as problems with cables, hubs and USB extenders

Often the user plugs in a particular USB device and, when it does not function normally, concludes that the USB port is not working. This is often not the case, and here I recommend trying:

  • Check if other flash drives, mouse, keyboard work with this USB port?
  • If you are using a hub (splitter) for the connection, try connecting the device directly to the USB connector.
  • If a cable is used to connect (for example, we connect a phone). try with a different cable. The bottom line: some USB cables do not serve for data transmission, but only for charging: for example, you can find these in a set with wireless headphones or some toys.
  • When connecting a device, check if a new device appears in the device manager with an error (exclamation mark)? If it appears, open its properties, look at the error code and search for it to solve the problem (including on this site), for example, the following are common: Device descriptor request failed (Code 43), Windows has stopped this device (Code 43), The driver is damaged or missing (Code 39), The device does not work correctly (Code 31).
  • The problem may also be in the USB connector on the device itself: malfunction, dirt or oxidation of the contacts can lead to the fact that it will not be visible in Windows (sometimes while continuing to charge or glow).

As a result, if we are talking about a specific device, I recommend looking for solutions specifically for this device: this will narrow the available set of options for the problem and the appropriate actions to fix it.

What to do if USB on the front of the PC does not work

Another common situation is that all connectors are working properly, but connecting to USB on the front panel of the computer does not lead to anything. Almost always the reason for this is that these connectors are not cabled to the “internal” USB connector (pictured below) on the motherboard.

About this in detail and with photos in the second part of the instruction How to connect the connectors on the front of the computer to the motherboard.

If USB ports do not work after installing Windows

Most often, the problem with not working USB ports after installing the OS occurs for those users who install clean Windows 7 on a computer or laptop that only has USB 3.0 ports. The reason is the lack of appropriate drivers by default in 7-ka. However, similar problems can arise in Windows 10, especially when it comes to some unique hardware.

The general solution is to check if there are separate chipset and USB drivers on the official website of the laptop or PC motherboard manufacturer. If so, install them. For Windows 7, in the absence of an official driver, you can find generic USB 3.0 drivers on the Internet.

Additional manifestations of the problem and methods of correction

Finally, some additional possible ways to fix the problem:

  • If the problem appears after shutting down Windows 10, and if you run “Start”. “Restart”, USB works again, try disabling Fast Startup.
  • Check if the BIOS / UEFI of your computer or laptop has USB fast initialization, fast boot options. If so, try disabling them.
  • In Device Manager, under “USB Controllers”, check the properties of all USB hub devices and on the Power Management tab uncheck “Allow this device to be turned off to save power”.
  • If the problem appeared recently for no apparent reason, check if there are system restore points as of the date when everything worked, if any, use them.

In a situation where none of the proposed options turned out to be useful in your case, describe the details in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев: perhaps I will be able to give a hint.

USB port does not work when a device is connected

If you have done the above methods and are sure that the USB port (s) on the computer or laptop itself are working, as well as the connected device itself is working, then below there will be methods that can solve a software or system problem.

Conflict with old drivers

Older drivers may conflict with current ones. You will not see the old drivers as they are hidden, but we will remove them. For this:

  • Click WinX and select “Device Manager”.
  • Click on the “View” tab at the top and select “Show hidden devices”.
  • If you connected a keyboard and the USB connection does not work, then expand the “Keyboards” column and delete everything that has a translucent look.
  • Also, expand the “USB controllers” column and also delete everything that has a translucent look.
  • Restart your computer or laptop and check if the USB port is working.

Editing filters for USB

Before performing this step, I recommend creating a system restore point. Click WinR and type regedit to open the Registry Editor. In the registry, go along the path:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \
  • On the right, if there are two parameters UpperFilter and LowerFilters, then remove them.
  • Reboot the PC and the USB ports should work.

Power supply for USB controller and device

Click WinX and select “Device Manager”. If you connect a device to the USB port of your computer as Bluetooth, then double-click on it to open the properties and go to the “Power Management” tab. Uncheck the box next to “Allow this device to be turned off to save energy”.

Next, expand the “USB Controllers” column and double-click on all controllers in turn, and uncheck the power off checkbox.

Third party software

Some software, especially security software, may block USB device connections. If a third-party antivirus, firewall, firewall, or flash drive software is installed, remove them. Also, I recommend scanning the system for viruses with a scanner. like Zemana or DrWeb.

Reinstall driver

  • Click WinX and select “Device Manager”.
  • In the device manager, select the plug-in as a USB flash drive, keyboard or mouse.
  • Right-click on it and select “Remove device”.
  • Next, click on the “Action” tab and “Update hardware configuration”.

Power management

Windows 10 system turns off power to the port to conserve power in laptop batteries. In some situations, this setting might not be configured correctly for desktops as well. Let’s check.

Click WinR and enter control.exe powercfg.cpl ,, 3. to quickly open Power Options. Find and expand the “USB Settings” column and set the value to “Forbidden” to temporarily disable the USB port.

USB may be disconnected due to system settings

Laptop power management can be configured so that the system automatically disconnects the USB connector to conserve battery power after a certain period of inactivity. No repairs are required here. In order for the laptop to stop disconnecting the USB input, it is enough to prevent Windows from changing the controller’s power settings, for which:

  • In the manager, open the branch of the serial bus controllers, select the line of the root USB hub.
  • Double click open the device, select power management.
  • Uncheck the box next to the line allowing the system to disable the connector to save power.

Repeat the described steps for each of the USB-hubs registered in the device manager.

Checking BIOS configuration

When such a problem occurs, the first thing to check is whether the USB controllers on the motherboard have turned off. They can also turn off on their own, and repair of the connector is not required. When the controller suddenly stopped working, you can activate it in the BIOS:

  • Immediately after starting the boot, frequently press Del, F2 or another function key provided for entering the BIOS on your device.
  • Find Integrated Peripherals or Advanced (depending on BIOS version).
  • Select USB Configuration. Here, opposite the USB Controller lines, the Enabled parameter should be set. If not, set the desired value yourself and save the current configuration.

The problem can also sometimes occur due to some USB device that needs repair. To determine it, disconnect all devices using this port. mouse, USB keyboard, etc. Try plugging in a working flash drive. If problems stop appearing, look for a non-working peripheral device.

Fixing USB ports on a laptop

The reasons why the USB ports on a laptop do not work can be both software and hardware. Sometimes all ports do not function at once, and sometimes only one or two. Below we will consider why such malfunctions appear, and also tell you what to do to fix them on your own, if you do not need to repair the connector itself.

We work with the device manager

Through the “Start” or in another way, go to the device manager. Perhaps one of the USB controllers group here is marked with a yellow exclamation mark icon, why the device is not functioning.

How To Fix USB Ports Not Working on Laptop Windows 10

You can try to fix the situation in the following way:

  • Remove the controller marked with yellow from the dispatcher;
  • Reboot your laptop.

At the next start, the system will reinstall all the necessary software, after which the failed controllers can work again. Sometimes it helps to rollback the OS to a previous state when all the equipment was functioning normally.

Problems with the driver on the motherboard

Sometimes USB not working problems can be caused by an outdated motherboard chipset driver. The problem is solved by downloading it from a reliable source and then installing it. For this:

  • Find out your board and chipset model. If the documentation for the laptop is not preserved, install a diagnostic utility such as AIDA64. When you have a chipset from Intel (in most cases this is the case), then all the necessary information can be obtained at http://www.intel.com/support/ru/siu.htm, having downloaded there a proprietary utility from Intel for hardware identification.
  • The required driver can also be found on the motherboard manufacturer’s website. However, even here it may not be the freshest. Its latest version is guaranteed to be found only on the website of the chipset manufacturer.
  • Next, it remains to unzip the driver, for example, using the 7-Zip utility and install it as a normal application.

If you don’t want to bother looking for the latest version of the driver you need, you can simply use the DriverPack Solution application, which automatically detects devices with outdated drivers and updates them.

When Windows is to blame

Sometimes OS crashes are the cause of non-functioning controllers, so repairs are required by Windows itself. In this case, you need to reinstall. But to be sure of the cause of the malfunction and not to do unnecessary work, check the functionality of the USB ports without loading Windows.

To do this, you can, for example, boot the system from any Live CD. If the ports work as expected in this disk OS, then the problem is definitely in Windows. you can safely reinstall it. If the devices did not work when booting from the Live CD, then the problem should be looked for in the hardware, it may need to be repaired.

So, most often software malfunctions with non-working USB controllers are solved by updating the driver for the chipset or the motherboard itself (which is essentially the same thing after the north and south bridges on the motherboard have been replaced with a single chip). Also, the problem often goes away after reinstalling the OS. Otherwise, the controllers, connected USB-devices may be faulty, or repairs must be done on the motherboard itself.

Fix 1. Restart your laptop

Sometimes a simple reboot can fix an unrecognized USB device. Plug in your USB device, wait a few minutes, then restart your laptop. Reconnect the USB device to see if it works.

Fortunately, this will solve your problem right away and you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

If not, you need to move, let’s move on to the next fix.

Fix 4: Update USB Drivers

If the above steps did not solve your problem, you are most likely using the wrong or outdated USB driver. Your USB drivers need updating. If you are not sure if you are manually playing with the drivers, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running on, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about an installation error.

You can update your drivers automatically with the FREE or Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version, it only takes 2 clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money-back guarantee):

1) Download and install the driver Easily.

2) Launch Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Then Driver Easy will scan your computer and detect any problematic drivers.

3) Click Update next to the checked USB driver. to automatically download the correct version of this driver, after which you can manually install it (this can be done with the FREE version).

Or click Update All. to automatically download and install the correct version of any missing or outdated drivers. on your system (this requires the Pro version. you will be prompted to update when you click Update All).

4) Restart your laptop for the changes to take effect.

After following the steps above, your USB drivers should be updated. Check if the USB ports on your laptop are working properly.

Fix 2: adjust power management

To conserve energy, Windows turns off USB controllers when not in use, and turns them back on when needed. Unfortunately sometimes Windows is unable to switch your USB controllers again.

To rule it out as a cause, you need to configure its Power Management. by following these steps. below:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke Run. Then enter devmgmt. msc in the box and click OK.

2) In the Device Manager window, double-click Universal Serial Bus Controllers. to expand the dropdown.

ports, working, laptop

3) Right click USB Root Hub in the list and select Properties

4) Click Power Management. tab. Then uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click OK.

5) Repeat steps 3-4 for each USB root hub in your list of Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

By following the above steps, you can check if your USB ports are working again. If everything works fine, then congratulations! If not, you can try the following method.

Before starting work

Before you start, you can try some simple tests first. It can save you a lot of hassle.

Physical damage to USB ports?

Take a close look at your USB ports to see if anything is stuck inside. Remove it carefully if you see something down there.

If the USB port physically looks normal and there are no obstructions inside. You can plug a USB device into the port and try to gently wiggle it up and down. If it wiggles easily, it is a sign that the port is damaged.

[Solved] USB ports not working on laptop

USB device not recognized appears message or nothing happens after connecting devices? When your USB ports go on strike for no reason, it can be annoying. But don’t panic. You can fix this easily. This guide should solve your problem.

Fix 3: reinstall USB drivers

You can also try removing all USB devices from your system using Device Manager. Windows will automatically reinstall USB drivers after reboot.

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R. at the same time to bring up the Run window. Then enter devmgmt.msc in the box and click OK.

2) Double click Universal Serial Bus Controllers. to expand the dropdown.

3) Right click USB Root Hub in the list. and select Remove device.

4) Repeat steps 3-4 for each USB root hub in your list of universal serial bus controllers.

5) Restart your laptop for the changes to take effect. Check if the USB ports are working again.

Problems with the device?

If you have another computer or laptop, try connecting a USB device to it. If it starts working, then you should know that this is a problem with the USB port.

If it still doesn’t work, then you know it’s a problem with the device.

If you do not have a spare computer, but have an additional USB device, try plugging it in to rule out a problem with the device.

Downloading drivers for USB ports

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is the most versatile port available today. Using this connector, you can connect not only a USB flash drive, keyboard or mouse to your computer, but also a lot of other devices. In the case of USB, as with any other computer component, there are several ways to find and download the necessary drivers. Let’s analyze them in detail in order.

From the motherboard manufacturer’s website

First, we need to find out the manufacturer and model of the motherboard. To do this, you need to follow a few simple steps.

On the “Start” button, right-click and select “Command line” or “Command line (administrator)”.

In both the first and second cases, the “Command Line” window will appear on the screen. Next, we need to enter the following commands in this window in order to find out the manufacturer and model of the motherboard.

wmic baseboard get Manufacturer. find out the manufacturer of the board wmic baseboard get product. motherboard model

Pressing the “Enter” button will take you to the search results page. Find your motherboard or laptop in the list. Click on the link by clicking on the title.

In most cases, on top you will see several sub-items for the mother card or laptop. We need the “Support” line. Click on it.

On the next page we need to find the item “Drivers and Utilities”.

ports, working, laptop
  • Opening the USB tree, you will see one or more links to download the driver. In our case, select the first one and press the “Global” button.
  • The download of the archive with the installation files will start instantly. After the download process is complete, you need to unpack the entire contents of the archive. In this case, it contains 3 files. Run the file “Setup”.
  • The process of unpacking the installation files will begin, after which the installation program will start. In the first window, to continue, you must click “Next”.

The next item will be familiarization with the license agreement. We do this at will, after which we put a check in front of the line “I accept the terms in the license agreement” and click the “Next” button.

The driver installation process begins. You can see the progress in the next window.

Upon completion of the installation, you will see a message about the successful completion of the operation. To complete, you just need to click the “Finish” button.

This completes the installation of the USB driver from the manufacturer’s website.

    Using automatic driver update programs

If you do not want to bother with finding the manufacturer and model of the motherboard, downloading archives, etc., then you should use this method. For this method, you will need any utility to automatically scan the system and download the necessary drivers.

For example, you can use DriverScanner or Auslogics Driver Updater. In any case, you will have plenty to choose from. There are a large number of similar programs on the network today. Take, for example, the same DriverPack Solution. You can learn about the detailed installation of drivers using this program from our special lesson.

    Via device manager

Go to Device Manager. To do this, you need to do the following.

    • Press the “WinR” key combination and enter devmgmt.msc in the window that appears. Press the “Enter” key.
    • In Device Manager, see if there are any USB errors. Typically, these errors are accompanied by yellow triangles or exclamation marks next to the device name.
    • If there is a similar line, right-click on the name of such a device and select “Update drivers”.

In the next window, select the item “Automatic search for updated drivers”.

  • The USB driver search and update program will start. It will take some time. If the program finds the necessary drivers, it will immediately install them on its own. As a result, you will see a message about the successful or unsuccessful completion of the search and installation process.
  • Please note that this method is the least effective of all three. But in some cases, it really helps the system at least recognize the USB ports. After such an installation, it is necessary to search for drivers in one of the two above ways in order for the data transfer rate through the port to be as high as possible.

As we previously advised, for any force majeure situations, always save the most important and necessary drivers and utilities on a separate medium. If necessary, it can save you a lot of time, which will be spent on re-searching the software. In addition, there may be situations when you simply will not have access to the Internet, and you will need to install drivers.

Problems with USB ports are caused by errors in the system or BIOS. The reason may also be hardware malfunctions, including damage to the connector and failure of a part of the motherboard.

Why the USB port does not see the device?

Why the computer does not see the USB device

Usually, the suspects in this case are software malfunctions, incorrect operating system settings, outdated drivers, malfunctions of computer USB ports, adapters or the drives themselves.

Installing drivers while removing the previous ones

If just installing new drivers did not help, then it makes sense to try the “clean version” of the procedure. To do this, press WinR and enter the devmgmt.msc command in the Run window, which will open the device manager.

In the list of available devices, find the item “USB Controllers” and delete all items in it with Host Controller in the name, and then install the drivers. Then restart your computer and check the result.

What to do if USB ports on an HP laptop do not work after installing Windows 7

Problems in the operation of USB connectors after installing Windows 7 are most likely related to the lack of necessary drivers. Modern laptops work with USB 3.0, and the G7 does not support this standard.

The most obvious way out is to install chipset drivers compatible with the installed OS version and supporting USB 3.0. You can find these on the HP support site using the model number of your laptop. Then download the chipset drivers and install them. After rebooting, the connectors should work. An alternative option is a special utility HP Support Assistant or the official website of the chipset manufacturer.

Disable Selective Ports Power Suspend in the System Registry

There may be an entry in the system registry that instructs to stop powering the USB ports to save power. Its value needs to be changed. To do this, click WinR and use the regedit command.

In the registry editor window, press CtrlF and enter DisableSelectiveSuspend in the search bar.

After a few minutes of searching, the editor will show the found entry (or will not show it if it is not there). It should be located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services USB. On the found entry, you need to right-click and select “Change”, then set the value to 1 and save the change. Then close the editor and restart the computer.

    Incorrect BIOS settings

To reinstall, you need to change the parameters of the low-level operating system. In the process, you can accidentally turn off the USB controller. This can happen arbitrarily. To return the settings to the required state, you should:

    • Restart your computer and, before starting to boot, press Esc and then F
    • Find tab
    • In the USB Configuration section, set the Enabled parameter to all USB Functions and Cotroller items.
    • Sometimes the inclusion is hidden in the Port Options item, in which you will need to check the USB Port option.

After the completion of the manipulations, it remains only to press F10 and exit the BIOS with saving the settings.

    Least favorable option

There is a small chance that the south bridge, one of the chipset components, has broken down during the installation process. As a rule, the same USB controller is built into it, which is responsible for the operation of the corresponding ports.

It will not work to replace the chip at home. this requires a special infrared soldering table and skills in working with it. That is, you have to contact the service center.
