Hvorfor skal man være påpasselig med billige Lightning kabler?

Vores anbefaling er, at man bør udvise forsigtighed, når det kommer til brug af billige Lightning kabler. Årsagen skyldes, at de ofte bruger billige chips og andre komponenter, som hverken overholder de krav Apple har til kabler og som følge deraf leverer en dårligere opladning end certificerede kabler.

I værste tilfælde kan det også skade din iPhone eller iPad, hvis du bruger et Lightning kabel, som ikke overholder Apples sikkerhedsstandarder. For at imødekomme dette, har Apple en streng godkendelsesproces, som ny producenter af kabler skal bestå for at blive godkendt. Disse kabler kaldes MFi certificerede.

Hvad betyder MFi?

MFi står for Made for iPhone. Det betyder i grove træk, at det er et stykke tilbehør, som indeholder en såkaldt MFi-chip, der er certificeret af Apple. Det indebærer, at den overholder deres standarder for kvalitet, sikkerhed og ydeevne. Hvilke forskellige lightning kabler er der?

Angående chips kan du enten købe kabler med MFi chips, dem der er lavet af Apple certificeret fabrikker også er der de uoriginale chips. MFi chips er rigtigt gode, uanset hvilken fabrik du får dem fra, de virker bare og de virker i årevis. De uoriginale chips kommer i rigtigt mange kvaliteter fra dem der holder 1-2 uger til dem der virker næsten ligeså godt som dem fra Apple selv. Vi har ikke nogen dårlige uoriginale chips, men der er helt sikkert forskel på de dårlige og de gode, hvis du vil være sikker så vælg altid et kabel med MFi chips i.

Der er også andre ting med kabler der gør dem gode, kablerne kan være andre stik så de kan oplade andre smartphones eller tablets, disse er som regel dårligere end resten, men vi har et enkelt så er rigtigt godt som også er på listen her.

De forskellige version af vores eget kabel

Vi har testet meget med forskellige typer lightning kabler igennem årene, fx er vores eget MFi i version 6 lige nu. Første version var dem vi fik i 2014, næste version havde en lidt anderledes chip, 3. version gik tilbage til den første chip men blev forstærket, i 4. version blev vi nød til at ændre designet lidt fordi vores fabrik mistede deres MFi certificering og her ved 5. version har vi fået den nye MFi 2 chip ved navn C89 i dem.

Vores billige kabel er der blevet testet endnu mere på, de er endelig nu i en så god kvalitet at de giver mening for alle at eje.

Vi laver vores egne MFi kabler, og vi har lavet dem så godt vi kan, de er lavet så de er billigere end Apples, men de er stadig bygget både bedre og hårdere så de holder bedre, vi har selv testet dem og lavet statistik på de første 5000 solgte her var der kun meget få der var ødelagt efter 6 måneder, kun 10 stk ca. Og af dem var der kun 2 1m kabler dvs 2 promille.

Vi har også solgt en masse af Apples lightning kabler, og dem har vi også statistik på, dog ikke med så mange kabler, vi har kun solgt ca. ~400 af dem, men her er 6 af dem i stykker efter 6 måneder eller omkring 6 procent ødelagte, det er noget af en forskel, det er fordi Apple bygger deres til at være bløde og vi bygger dem lidt hårdere så de bedre kan håndtere at blive trukket lidt i og de bedre kan tåle UV lyset fra solen.

Hvad er det svageste led i lightning kabler?

Det der går i stykker på kabler er en af 2 ting, det er chippen, fordi de enten bare gå i stykker eller den bliver sløv over tiden og begynder at give mere tab hvilket til sidst betyder at din iPhone skriver at kablet er uoriginalt og skal udskiftes.

Det andet er stikkene, særligt i den ende der går ind i din iPhone’s lightning stik, her er det som regel kablet der bliver hevet af lodninggerne på chippen, fordi kablet bliver hevet for meget i, i kablet i stedet for stikhovedet. Ellers går plastikken/gummiet af kablet og der kommer en kortslutning i starten af kablet, pga det samme med at hive i kabelet i stedet for stikhovedet.

Så husk altid at hive i stikhovedet ikke kablet.

Which Power Bank capacity (mAh) should I choose?

The Capacity (mAh) is also related to the size and weight of the Power Bank, so bigger capcacity also means bigger size and weight.

How many times you can charge your devices depends partly of the PowerBank capacity (mAh), set against the battery capacity (mAh) of the devices you want to charge. Smartphone batteries typically have between 2000-4000mAh capacity. powerful devices such as iPad / Tablets are normally between 6000-10000mAh. You can usually find the battery capacity (mAh) ratings on your various devices, in the product manual / documentation.

For example the iPhone 12 has a 2815mAh battery, so divided up with a 10000mAh Power Bank, will theoretically give you 3,55 full recharges.

However it also consumes energy to actually transfer / convert the power. both in the Power Bank and the recipient device. Secondly, there is also a natural loss in the cables and factors such as temperature, humidity, and not least wear on both ends come in to play.

In other words, you can not just divide the PowerBank capacity with the devices battery capacity. A rule of thumb says that about 20% goes to the above.

Finally, one should also remember that if the device is ON while being charged, it also means up to double power consumption. In this case the Power Bank both have to charge the battery and keep the device operated at the same time.

A cheap / inferior / standard Power Bank will typically have a significantly poorer energy efficiency than a good Power Bank. Secondly fake rated PowerBanks are very common in the market. All Chill Power Bank is specified with real capacity indication.

I tried a Power Bank in a different brand with fairly poor performance. Is Chill’s any different / better?

The two most expensive parts in a Power Bank is the battery cells and the Microchip (optimization and safety). The battery cells constitute up to 80% of the production cost. If a manufacturer will sell cheap power bank, then it is here to save!

So the majority of cheap standard Power Bank on the market are therefore either equipped with cheap battery cells, poor security / energy optimization and / or even with fake rated capacity (mAh). It’s incredibly easy for a manufacturer to make a nice design, put 5000-8000mAh cheap / low cells in it, and indicate and sell it as 10000mAh. How will you confirm you’ve got the listed capacity?

Will Chill’s PowerBanks support my devices?

Chill’s PowerBanks works with all equipment capable og being charged via USB. Virtually all modern Smartphones and iPad / Tablets, cameras, GPS devices, Bluetooth devices etc. is using one of the various USB connectors for charging. If you already use a USB charger / power supply with your devices, then you can also fit your regular USB cable in the Power Bank instead.

The PowerBank itself is also being recharged via USB. Just connect it to your ordinary USB charger / power supply which came included with your Smarthpone / Tablet, a USB port in your computer or any other USB charging source / power supply (sold separately).

The capacity estimation seems a bit inaccurate?

The capacity calculation in a Power Bank works by measuring the internal battery voltage (high capacity = higher voltage and vice versa).

So for optimal capacity usage, the electronics need to know the battery cells current full and empty levels. This is normally measured continuously during full charge/discharge cycles (Full cycles are not required for daily use with a decent Powerbank)

For the same reason, maximum capacity usage is only achieved after 3-5 full cycles when new! Also Actual capacity is gradually affected over time when used etc.

If you experience the capacity estimation seem a bit imprecise, it is basically just a matter of during a full cycle for calibration. You can follow this approach:

Manual Calibration:- Discharge the Power Bank completely- Fully recharge the Power Bank (until LED / LCD Display does not blink)- Disconnect the charging cable for a few seconds and reconnect it to charge again. After a moment the LED / LCD will again be fully lit

The Power Bank is now calibrated and can be used normally again.

How long is the lifespan of a Power Bank?

A Power Bank is basically a Li-ion or Li-Polymer based battery wrapped in electronics, which then enables use via USB standard.

The lifespan of the batteries themselves depends largely on the cell quality, but also on the operating conditions.

Cheap / standard Power Bank also have cheaper cells inside, and usually the capacity will drop rapidly after just a few months.

Better Power Banks are designed to theoretically deliver 300-500 charges / cycles and will typically still have 50% capacity remaining after this. Depending on the use and conditions a lifespan of 1-3 years is usually to be expected. however this is also a huge interval!

Operating conditions have a crucial effect on battery cells lifespan, so you must follow these guidelines to maximize the life:

USB-C vs. Lightning: Which is the Future?

For over a decade, Apple has been hailed as the world’s most innovative brand. There are, however, dissenting voices about Apple’s innovation, for example, its proprietary Lightning connector on iPhones and some other devices.

Right now, two types of charging cables dominate the market: USB-C and Lightning, which still causes an inconvenience for customers. EU lawmakers are currently pushing once again to make all mobile devices use a universal charging cable. What do you think of a universal cable and which do you think it will be?

Cost

With the so-called “security chip” made by Apple, a certified Lightning cable usually costs more than most other charging cables, including the newest type of USB cables, Type-C that has a minimum current of 3A. The chip inside every Lightning cable is the identifier that tells us whether the cable is certified or not. And the chip is not free, of course. Those MFi certified ones are expected to be more costly due to its higher quality level and license from Apple. If you find some very cheap Lightning cables, the chances are that they are not certified. Does it mean that everything has to be MFi certified? Maybe not.

Put simply, a USB-C cable costs less than a Lightning cable, MFi or not. But does it suggest that you should use USB-C cables because it’s cheaper, or should you avoid it because “you get what you pay for”?

Not everything has to be either this or that. So, let’s forget about the price and discuss which one, in their best form, works better.

Reliability

The chip used in the Lightning cable is used by Apple only. Its purpose, according to Apple is to ensure the safety and quality of the cable, which is a basic security requirement for any cable, and guarantee compatibility between the accessories and the Apple devices. Does the chip actually make the cable safer? Yes, if you compared it with a non-MFi Lightning cable; but, no, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s more reliable than a USB-C cable.

The full-featured USB-C cable is required to be packed with an E-Marker chip which runs CC (Configuration Channel) to identify and monitor data between USB devices, thus controlling the power supply. It’s extremely vital to protect USB devices, particularly during fast charging, because it can help stabilize the current and data transfer.

As the USB-C needs to handle fast charging, it features more protection precautions. A 3A (USB-C) cable has a higher specification on internal resistance than the 2.4A (Lightning) cable. That said, if you use any cable and charger under its maximum specification, it should be safe.

Data Transfer

It’s known to all that Lightning cables transfer data at USB 2.0 speed, which is 480Mbps/60MBps while USB-C can handle USB 3.0 speed, with transfer speeds as fast as 5Gbps/640MBps (USB 3.1 Gen 1), or 10Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen2), and Thunderbolt 3, the superset of USB-C, is capable of 40Gbps. Although there were reports that the newer model of the Lightning connector supports a USB 3.0 host, you can only find it on some iPads. No one really knows exactly what speed Lightning can handle as Apple doesn’t release all specifications. In fact, an update on the standards of Lightning cables has not been seen in over eight years.

Clearly, USB-C is much faster than Lightning, although some believe that Lightning is not necessarily worse simply because it’s slower. It’s not usual to transfer big data files via mobile phones or other devices. Furthermore, you don’t have to use a cable to transfer data. Wireless transfers or access to data through Cloud servers is more common nowadays.

Power Delivery

Another big difference lies in the power delivery rate. The maximum current the Lightning cable carries is 2.4A while the USB-C cable is 3A and can be up to 5A. That means Lightning cables allow less power to deliver to the powered device under the same voltage. In this case, Lightning cables are not suitable to fast charge because its current is limited in 2.4A. On the other hand, USB-C connectors and cables can be adapted to fast charge basically under any type of high-voltage charging standard, for example, QC, PE, FCP, VOOC, or PE 3.0, just to name a few.

One of the most common fast charging standards is USB Power Delivery. Despite iPhone 8 and later models supporting USB PD fast charging, you have to purchase the USB-C to Lightning cable to deliver increased levels of power to your iPhone that features the proprietary Lightning connector. Fast charge your phone up to 50% in just 30 minutes. Who doesn’t want that?

In terms of power delivery, USB-C dwarfs that of Lightning.

Durability

This is probably the trickiest topic to discuss when comparing USB-C cables and Lightning cables. Many people claim that Lightning cables break easily while USB-C cables last longer. The reason could relate to the size of the cable since Lightning cables are thinner compared with USB-C ones. USB-C cable is also rated for 10,000 connect-disconnect cycles while there is no official data for the Lightning cable. Some argue, however, that Lightning is more durable than USB-C because the Lightning connecting tabs are on the cable itself and the connector fits tighter to the Lightning port. The cable never feels loose when the Lightning connector is plugged in.

People are worlds apart on which one is more robust. There will always be a clear disparity here, to some extent, because the result highly depends on how you use or maintain the cable. Some people are just good at keeping things.

USB-C vs. Lightning: When will the universal cable happen?

Based on the comparison above, USB-C seems to be the winner. Not surprisingly, most mobile device and accessory makers choose USB-C over Lightning. USB-C is becoming more and more universal, which is a good sign for many people. This is particularly the case for EU lawmakers who have been trying to make all mobile devices use the same cable to reduce electronic waste.

The trend is clear, but as Apple continues to use Lightning on iPhones, USB-C will never be fully universal. Switching from Lightning to USB-C may cause more e-waste since all iPhones (iPhone 5 and later) are using Lightning make up a large percentage of mobile phones in the world. Apple will probably keep Lightning or eventually move to wireless. Reportedly Apple will make the completely wireless iPhone in one or two years.
