Sony A95K: A Revolutionary dream TV

Last year’s CES 2021 introduced many new technological solutions in the high-tech TV segment, but miniLED screens can be considered the main innovation in LCD TVs. It would seem that such a productive technology will not be squeezed out of the market soon. But everything turned out to be a little different. Opening CES 2022, the Sony Bravia XR Master Series A95K TV with advanced QD-OLED technology entered the arena.

The innovation boom is accompanied by the emergence of a large number of new names, acronyms and abbreviations. In this case, the name of the hybrid QD-OLED technology, which has been developed by Samsung for several years, means a combination of Quantum Dot (QD) and OLED technologies. In this review, Sony XR-65A95K 4K HDR TV, we will describe the features of the new product.

Sony A95K Preview

QD-OLED technology

As you know, QD displays and OLED panels represent two main directions of TV development. Quantum dot technology has been successfully used in LCD TVs competing with OLED models for several years. There are pros and cons to each of them, of course. Therefore, the idea of creating a hybrid with a combination of their merits has long been of interest to many companies.

OLED technology uses organic carbon based film. The electric current causes the diodes on its surface to glow. Virtually every pixel on an OLED screen is part of the image and does not require backlighting. In the absence of a control signal, it is disabled and provides perfect contrast due to absolute black, without affecting neighboring pixels.

In addition, the absence of an LCD panel reduces panel thickness and prevents scattering deterioration in viewing angles. But the tiny pixel size of OLEDs limits their brightness. To increase it, LG Display adds a white subpixel (RGBW panel) to the matrix. Unfortunately, this reduces the number of color subpixels, lowering the resolution, and distorts the color of adjacent pixels, reducing color fidelity. On top of that, increasing the brightness decreases the lifespan of the organic material.

QLED technology uses LED backlighting (blue LEDs) and a layer of quantum dots (nanoparticles) on a film that is sized to match the wavelengths of green and red. Nanoparticles on a film absorb blue and re-emit green and red, depending on their size. But blue also partially passes through the film.

High brightness, wide color gamut and high color accuracy are the main advantages. But this technology requires constant backlighting. As a result, light is partially filtered through the RGB filter and creates grayscale on the screen, reducing the overall contrast of the image.

Hybrid QD-OLED technology uses a stack of blue OLED material to illuminate red and green quantum dots. As a result, the pixel of this matrix contains the blue subpixel of the original blue OLED material, as well as the green and red subpixels, which are generated using the “quantum dot” filter.

Design

Sony defines the multipurpose design of the Sony A95K TV as Dual Style. It is realized using an original stand, which has two installation options. The first is Front position with One Slate design. The stand “goes” out of sight, helping to maximize immersion in what is happening on the screen.

The second option is the rear location. At the same time, Sony A95K approaches the wall as much as possible, merging with the interior of the room as much as possible. It is important to note that the cable holders help keep the 65A95K TV’s back completely flat without getting in the way of it really close to the wall. The screen itself has extremely narrow premium metal bezels that also contribute to better immersiveness.

Image quality

The Bravia XR Master series has always had excellent image quality. The new QD-OLED panel and XR Triluminos Max system make colors even more vibrant and vivid. The unique Cognitive Processor XR chip reproduces natural hues by understanding how the human eye is focused. It cross-analyzes the image to squeeze the most realistic depth and extraordinary contrast out of it.

Combined with a QD-OLED panel and XR OLED Contrast Pro, the Sony 65A95K TV is up to 200% brighter than conventional TVs, bringing scenes to life with crisp, deep blacks. The detail of the picture is very high both in bright areas and in deep shadows of the frame.

With XR 4K Upscaling technology, you can enjoy near 4K quality images regardless of content or source. This is again the credit for the XR Cognitive Processor. It accesses a wealth of data, intelligently recreating lost textures and details to represent the real world.

Glare and reflections make it difficult to see what is happening on the screen clearly, especially in dark scenes where depth and detail are often hidden. Due to the extremely low reflectivity of street light, Sony’s QD-OLED panel reduces this effect, providing decent brightness, color and contrast in almost all lighting conditions.

Motion processing and game mode

The Sony A95K’s XR OLED Motion system combats blur by detecting and cross-analyzing key visual elements in successive frames. To eliminate blur, she creates additional frames and inserts them between the original ones, providing smooth and clear action in dynamic scenes.

Bravia XR A95K automatically adjusts and optimizes the picture for the best setting for your Playstation console, whether you’re playing a game or watching a movie. Auto Genre Picture Mode automatically switches the TV to Game Mode to minimize output lag, or to Standard Mode when watching movies via streaming service (or Ultra HD Blu-ray disc).

With HDMI 2.1, you can get frame rates up to 120 fps in compatible games, so you have the edge in shooting, sports and fast-paced games with near-instant on-screen action. You will also enjoy super-smooth gaming with reduced output lag (no more than 8.5ms at 4K / 120fps and dedicated game mode).

Smart TV

The Smart functions of the A95K series TVs are based on the Google TV operating system. With a Google account, you can watch over 700,000 movies and TV shows in one place. Google TV OS collects your favorite content from your apps and subscriptions and organizes them just for you. And easy access to all content and services is carried out hands-free (Hands Free Voice Search system).

There is even a dedicated Kids Profile to help guide kids to age-appropriate content so they never watch what they shouldn’t. You can set your favorite children’s themes, limit TV watching, and even set sleep times.

Voice can also be used to control Smart home devices. Adjusting room temperature, lighting, and more is easy – just ask Google. Videos, photos, games and much more are easily cast on the Sony A95K screen from iOS or Android devices using Google Cast or Apple AirPlay.

The remote control has been completely redesigned. The premium remote is now easy to use, with simplified buttons and backlighting so you can see everything clearly, even in the dark. This compact aluminum remote control has an exquisite appearance and is comfortable to hold in your hand.

Bravia CAM adds a host of exciting new TV experiences. This is a camera included with the TV and is easy to attach and detach. For added privacy, the camera has a regular plastic cover. What can the camera do?

By detecting viewing distance, Bravia CAM can automatically adjust the voice volume so that dialogue can be heard clearly. The camera also tracks your position and then adjusts the left and right balance for optimal sound. That is, wherever you are in the room, you will enjoy the same sound quality as if you were sitting right in front of the TV.

The camera provides gesture control, allowing you to change channels, adjust the volume, and more. It can also alert you when a child is approaching the A95K TV and dim the screen if it detects that there is no one in the room.

Sound

Sound comes straight from the TV screen with Acoustic Surface Audio The vibration of large drivers (actuators) uniquely transforms the entire screen into a speaker. This creates a powerful acoustic scene that moves with the picture, so you hear a more realistic soundtrack with exceptionally clear and natural dialogues.

Left and right subwoofers boost bass for truly immersive cinematic sound. All audio entertainment is enhanced to 3D surround sound. XR Surround effectively creates side and vertical surround sound using only TV speakers, eliminating the need for overhead or upward-facing speakers. The Bravia A95K TV is Dolby Atmos compatible.

Connections

The Sony A95K TV switching specification includes 4 HDMI ports (2 of them are version 2.1) and three USB ports (one of them is version 3.0). HDMI 2.1 delivers 48Gbps transfer rate in 4K 120p mode. The third HDMI port supports the eARC channel. There is also a LAN port, digital audio output and antenna jacks. There is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Price of A95K At the moment (January 2022) the price of the Sony XR-65A95K TV has not yet been announced. So is the price of the Sony XR-55A95K TV. According to unconfirmed reports, the A95K series QD-OLED TVs will not go on sale until mid-summer 2022.

Conclusion

Of course, an adequate analysis of the new QD-OLED TV is impossible without price, specs and testing. But some conclusions are already possible. The TV market is expanding with promising hybrid QD-OLED technology. It combines the excellent contrast and viewing angles of OLED panels with the high brightness and wide color gamut of quantum dot displays.

Curiously, Sony took the lead. As you know, the South Korean giant has been actively working in this direction for several years and even invested more than 11 billion in factories for the production of QD-OLED panels. There were rumors that Samsung Electronics would be announcing its 4K TV with this technology at CES 2022, but they did not materialize.

Perhaps Samsung QD-OLED will appear in the summer of 2022. To be fair, the Japanese company is using Samsung Display’s QD-OLED display. In general, QD-OLED technology is a colossal development breakthrough that opens up great prospects for improving image quality without increasing prices. So, to see firsthand the revolutionary nature of the Sony A95K TV is the dream of any TV viewer today.

Sony Bravia XR A95K OLED TV review: The best 4K TV ever

A quantum-dot OLED panel, Sony’s awesome image processing and audio tech, and the Google TV user interface make for a best-in-breed TV. Be prepared for sticker shock.

Our Verdict

Sony’s Bravia XR A95K-series TV delivers fantastic color, brightness, black, processing, and sound. It’s arguably the best Smart TV on the market–and it’s priced to support that theory.

This Sony Bravia XR A95K-series is the second TV we’ve seen based on Samsung Display’s new RGB OLED technology. It’s also arguably the best (by a slim margin) thanks to Sony’s processing and audio expertise and a superior Smart TV user interface (Google TV). We like it. A lot.

Buying the best OLED TV, however, will cost you: At the time of this review, the 65-inch model we tested was on sale for between 2,879 and 3,000–about 1,200 more than Samsung’s very competitive S95B (1,800 on sale), and almost 900 more than LG’s still excellent C2/G2 OLEDs (2,000 on sale).

This review is part of TechHive’s in-depth coverage of the best Smart TVs.

Bravia XR A95K-series features and design

By far the most notable feature of the Sony’s A95K-series is its 120Hz, 3840 x 2160, pure RGB OLED display. If you’re not familiar, the LG OLEDS that have held sway over this market segment for the last few years are WRGB. That is, they use a fourth white sub-pixel to increase peak brightness when needed. WRGB works very well, but tends to reduce color saturation in bright spots. In spite of this, LG OLEDs have very good color accuracy the vast majority of the time.

The pure RGB technology in the A95K-series uses only red, green, and blue sub-pixels, so it maintains color saturation when highlights get brighter. In our testing, it seems Sony plays up this advantage and over-saturates at some points. I say “over,” but the effect is extremely pleasing to the eye.

The A95K’s other outstanding feature is its use of the display glass as a planar speaker. The rear-mounted impellers, driven by 60 watts of total power, vibrate the panel to very good effect, making it one of the few TVs whose sound you won’t feel an immediate need to augment.

Back to the more mundane aspects: The 65-inch unit Sony sent us is very thin: 1.75-inches at the caboose used to house its electronics and those sound impellers. It sits on a rather massive stand, bolted to two L-brackets that themselves bolt to the stands. The whole deal with its extremely thin bezel is very attractive, as you can see in the image below.

The 65-inch Bravia XR A95K weighs just under 60 pounds, with the stand contributing another 30 or so pounds. It was a bit of a bear to wrestle myself, but doable. I suggest help from a friend, which wasn’t available to me at the time. The VESA mount point is a 300mm x 300mm pattern.

Port selection is top notch: Four HDMI ports, two of which support 120Hz refresh rates, variable refresh rate (VRR), and auto low-latency mode (ALLM). One HDMI port also supports eARC. You’ll also find a coax connection for an over-the-air TV antenna or cable/satellite set-top box, ethernet, composite audio with a center speaker input, optical S/PDIF) audio out, RS-232, and two USB-A ports (one at the side of the TV, the other near the bottom).

There’s a Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) adapter on board, and the Bluetooth radio features latency compensation. There’s support for HDR10 (but not DR10), Dolby Vision, HLG, Calman auto calibration, DTS Digital Surround, Dolby Atmos (and precursors). There are a number of sound modes (EQ) as well as faux 3D audio upscaling. The TV automatically adjusts its audio for room conditions during setup.

I stream movies across my local network, and the onboard media player (which also supports USB mass storage) has matured into a top-notch entity with exceptionally wide codec support.

In short, there’s little state-of-the-art missing from this TV.

Sony Bravia XR A95-series’ Smart TV interface and remote control

Sony uses the Google TV interface here, which has matured into a reasonably efficient and navigable creation. I quite liked that the home row is occupied by the input and main settings icons rather than content Sony is selling.

The voice remote, which supports Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, is the vastly improved, smaller, more focused model Sony started shipping last year. It’s backlit for use in dark environs and sports dedicated buttons for settings, input, and transport control. I like its balance of minimalism and functionality quite a bit more than Samsung’s austere remotes that force you onscreen for almost every task.

I will also say that the Sony remote feels nice in the hand. While I appreciate Samsung’s solar-rechargeable One Remote from an environmental point of view, the slightly greater heft of Sony’s battery-powered remote provides more substantial tactile feedback. That said, you still need to use onscreen selectors to enter numbers and the like. Sigh.

As far as user interface/remote synergy is concerned, you can change settings and see the effect in real time, which can make all the difference if you’re tailoring the picture for specific content. There are a host of options for that task–far more than the non-videophile likely wants or needs. I was fine with the template settings Sony provides: Standard, Cinema, IMAX, and so on.

All in all, I found using Sony’s A95K significantly more efficient than Samsung’s Tizen-based S95B.

The Sony Bravia XR A95K-series’ picture and sound quality

While the A95K’s image isn’t perfect, it’s darn close. The color is rich and spot on to the naked eye, there’s plenty of peak brightness (without blowing out color, thanks to the panel being pure RGB rather than RGBW), and the blacks are; well, this is an OLED TV, so the blacks are great.

I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t inform you that Sony’s A95K is not quite as bright as Samsung’s S95B. It’s not really noticeable in real life, but there is a slight drop-off, likely on purpose, as both TVs use the same basic panel technology.

If I were to be picky, the gradients in the dark end of the spectrum weren’t as accurate as they are with LG’s WRGB panel, but it’s a worthwhile trade-off most users will never notice.

Screen uniformity is awesome, viewing angles are superbly wide, there’s no blooming around bright objects and the overall picture is in a word: lush. That’s standard for OLED, though, and I did notice a bit of glare from some steep viewing angles, but only when the test room’s harsh and bright lighting was at full blast.

The A95K features a heat dissipation layer that’s absent from Samsung’s and LG’s OLEDs. This allows the TV to remain bright if you have a constant highlight present on-screen. As for how Sony handles burn-in (elements that remain visible, as with old CRTs if you left a static image in place too long) under such circumstances, I don’t know, and I didn’t want to find out on Sony’s dime. Suffice it to say that OLED panels are not the best technology for static image display.

Processing defects were exceedingly rare and minor. There was a touch of shimmer and moiré, but not on the scale you’ll see with LED-backlit LCD TVs. The same can be said for rendering fine lines and jaggies.

Note that Sony’s Motionflow smoothing setting didn’t cure the A95K’s judder issues, only increasing the CineMotion value tamed it–and tamed it well. Motion was very smooth.

The sound, thanks to Sony’s planar drivers, is spectacular for a flat-screen TV. It won’t replace top-tier outboard gear, but lay off purchasing a soundbar until you hear it–you might just decide you don’t need one. Most notably, the TV actually produces bass. And not a minuscule amount either.

Additionally, the A95K also supports Sony’s 3D audio devices such as the the SRS-NS7 neckband speakers we reviewed recently.

The Sony Bravia XR A95K-series is fantastic, but pricey

So, the Sony Bravia XR A95K is likely the best 4K UHD TV we’ve ever seen. But its primary competition–the 65-inch Samsung S95B–was selling for 1,200 less at the time of this review, and Samsung’s picture-processing prowess is just a gnat’s eyebrow behind Sony’s. During everyday use, you’ll be hard-pressed to tell the difference. LG offers even cheaper OLED TVs, some of which are still among our favorites.

If you want the absolute best Smart TV, you want one from the Sony Bravia XR A95K-series. If you don’t care about the two to five percent improvement you might never notice, a more efficient user interface (LG’s WebOS is also far better than Samsung’s Tizen), or superior onboard sound quality, then the competition offers the better bottom-line value.

Customer Reviews

I bought the TV but still waiting for it to delivered, but from what i saw ohh my god the TV has a beautiful stunning picture quality and colors as will, cannot to to try living with it.

sony, a95k, revolutionary, dream

Very good excellent viewing and excellent sounding

I bought the A95K 65″ in the UK about a month back, got it wall mounted through an installer. I noticed very obvious marks on the left part of the screen (my room is well-lit and the spots were very noticeable in the bright light). There was definitely something wrong with the screen panel, which the retailer’s technical team confirmed as well.

I had the TV exchanged for a new unit through my retailer, they sent a new one and I hired another installer to wall mount it. Just three days into using this particular unit, I switched on the TV in the morning but it didn’t turn on, with red light flashing 5 times on the panel (no picture and no audio at all). Did a bit of research and apparently there was some issue with the electric circuit board. Had this unit returned again as well.

It goes without saying that when I actually enjoyed the TV for a couple of days, the picture quality was outstanding! Probably the best I have ever seen! I already own a Sony 5.1 surround system, a PS5, Sony wireless headphones etc., so I wanted to buy the Sony TV as well to stick with the ecosystem. But with these technical issues, eventually, I lost confidence on a 3.2k TV on which I had also spent 200 additionally just to wall mount and take off.

Proabably I was extremely unlucky with the TV units I got (probably the retailer gave me the refurbished units), but I would suggest not buying this TV right now and wait for the technology to mature enough before you go with this.

I read a lot of reviews before spending this much on a TV and do not regret it at all. Even 720p sources are handled admirably by the internal processing, especially old black and white films where the contrast far exceeds my previous plasma. My criticisms are, when the stand is in front of the TV, the screen is still slightly inclined backwards and does not sit flush with the wall. Also the Google TV interface lacks customisation and you have to put up with whatever it decides to promote rather than have contents under my own control. I do own the TV after all and am not renting the homepage!
