Learn how to set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Switch to a new device

If you want to transfer data from another device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, follow these steps:

Make sure you back up your previous iOS device. This is necessary to transfer content to the new device.

Set up your first iOS device

If the new device is already configured, but you want to start from scratch, see the instructions for erasing data on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Otherwise, follow these steps.

Turn on the device

Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. A greeting appears in several languages. Follow the onscreen instructions. Visually impaired users have the option to enable VoiceOver or Zoom in directly on the welcome screen.

When prompted, select your language. Then select a country or region. From this choice depends on how the device will display information (date, time, contacts and much more). At this point, you can click the blue universal access button to configure the appropriate settings that will help you configure and use the new device.

Set up using the Quick Start feature on another device with iOS 11 or later

A new device can be configured automatically using the Quick Start feature on another iOS device 11 or later. Place the two devices next to each other, and then follow the instructions in this article.

If you do not have another device with iOS 11 or later, click “Configure manually” to continue.

Device activation

To activate and continue to configure the device, you must connect to a Wi-Fi network, cellular network, or iTunes.

Click the name of the desired Wi-Fi network or select another option. When setting up your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi Cellular), you may need to first insert a SIM card.

Set up Face ID or Touch ID and create a password

On some devices, you can set up Face ID or Touch ID. Using these features, you can use face or fingerprint recognition to unlock your device and make purchases. Click “Continue” and follow the on-screen instructions or click “Configure later in Settings.”

Then set a six-digit password to protect the data. A password is required to use features such as Face ID, Touch ID, and Apple Pay. If you want to set a four-digit password, user password, or do not want to use a password, click “Password Parameters”.

Recovery or transfer of information and data

If you have a backup of iCloud or iTunes or an Android device, you can restore or transfer data from the old device to the new one.

If there is no backup or other device, select “Configure as new [device]”.

Sign in with your Apple ID

Enter your Apple ID and password or click “Forgot your password or not Apple ID?” At this point, you can restore your Apple ID or password, create an Apple ID, or configure it later. If you have multiple Apple IDs, click “Use different Apple IDs for iCloud and iTunes?”

When you log in using your Apple ID, you can request a verification code from a previous device.

Turn on automatic updates and configure other features

Next, you can decide whether to share information with program developers and whether or not iOS is allowed to automatically install updates.

Configuring Siri and other services

Next, you will be asked to configure or enable various services and functions, for example Siri. On some devices, you will be asked to say a few phrases so that the Siri function remembers your voice.

If you are logged in using your Apple ID, follow the instructions to set up Apple Pay and the iCloud Keychain feature.

Setting the “Screen Time” function and other display parameters

Using the Screen Time function, you can track how much time you and your children use the device. In addition, using this function you can set restrictions on the use of programs during the day. By setting “Screen Time”, you can enable the True Tone function, if supported, and change the size of the icons and text on the “Home” screen using the “Zoom” function.
