Samsung Galaxy tab 2 slows down

Platform and performance

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active LTE modification is based on the popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 platform, with four 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 cores and Adreno 305 graphics. We have already described this SoC in the review of another tablet, Wexler Mobi 7 LTE.

By the standards of the modern market, the Snapdragon 400 belongs to budget systems, which is one step below the Snapdragon 200, which is already installed in the cheapest devices. Interesting is the amount of RAM Tab Active. not two, not one, but one and a half gigabytes, which we have not yet come across in tablets.

The tested competitors have more powerful stuffing installed, but it also needs to work in a higher resolution.

In browser benchmarks, the difference in resolution does not play any role, and the Tab Active lags far behind all competitors. Note the difference between the two Samsung: in both benchmarks, the Snapdragon 800 is slightly more than twice as fast as the Snapdragon 400.

The roughly two-fold lag behind the Tab Pro is consistently maintained in complex benchmarks. The UX mode of MobileXPRT can be ignored, very few fail here, the bulk of the results vary around a hundred points.

Tab Active’s low CPU clock makes the Geekbench even wider than the competition.

The graphics are the weak point of the already low-powered Snapdragon 400: even the old quad-core Mali-450 is a worthy competitor to the Adreno 305. But we still have a Samsung tablet, so we can well count on stable gaming.

Modern Combat 5: Eclipse works fine
Call of Duty: Strike Team works fine
Asphalt 8: Airborne works fine
N.O.V.A. 3 works fine
Dead trigger 2 works fine, medium settings
GTA: San Andreas very slow, minimal settings
Need for Speed: No Limits works fine
Assassin’s Creed: Pirates works fine
Deux Ex: The Fall works fine
World of Tanks: Blitz works fine

Dead Trigger 2 did not allow setting the graphics settings above average, but at this level it worked perfectly. The same cannot be said about GTA: San Andreas, which remained practically unplayable with any settings. Overall, we rate the Galaxy Tab Active’s gaming compatibility as very good.

Below is a thermal image of the rear surface (top in the photo. right), obtained after 10 minutes of running the battery test in the GFXBenchmark program:

It can be seen that the heating is localized in the upper part of the device, which, apparently, corresponds to the location of the SoC microcircuit. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was only 32 degrees, which is quite a bit. If you remove the back cover, you can detect heating already up to 35 degrees, and a dark section of the card slot becomes visible, which, due to the mirrored metal surface, reflects the IR radiation of external (and relatively cold) objects:

Equipment

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active comes in a wood-like cardboard box, just like the rest of the manufacturer’s tablets. The box contains information about the presence of a protective case and a C Pen stylus in the kit.

BDRip 1080p MKV, H.264, 1920 × 1080, 8000 Kbps, AC3 reproduced normally played without sound

Instead of MX Player, we use VLC for Android as a third-party player, since it plays AC3 audio without any extra wisdom. Its Tab Active does not process without assistance. But VLC fails to display subtitles correctly. The standard player, on the other hand, not only sees the subtitles, but also displays them as expected.

We did not find the MHL interface, like Mobility DisplayPort, in this tablet, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Testing techniques for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)”). Screenshots with an exposure of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In our tests we used the MX Player video player in the “Hardware” mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

File Uniformity Skips
1080 / 60p fine not
1080 / 50p well not
1080 / 30p fine not
1080 / 25p fine not
1080 / 24p fine not
720 / 60p fine not
720 / 50p fine not
720 / 30p well not
720 / 25p fine not
720 / 24p fine not

Note: If green marks are set in both the Uniformity and Gaps columns, it means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven interleaving and skipping of frames will not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the comfort viewing. Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video playback on the screen of the tablet itself is high, since frames (or groups of frames) can be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels (720p) on the tablet screen, the image, in fact, of the video file is displayed exactly along the wide border of the screen, one to one pixel by pixel, that is, in the original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen actually corresponds to the standard range of 16-235. in the shadows only a couple of shades merge with black, but all the shades are displayed in the highlights.

Design

First, let’s examine the Galaxy Tab Active without a case. Among all Samsung tablets, it has the most differences from colleagues, who are sometimes difficult to identify at all. The front panel is surrounded by a silver frame, which rises slightly above the glass and thus somehow protects the screen.

The three standard Android buttons are mechanical, suitable for extreme conditions of use. The markings on them are made of silver plastic inserts. so it will not be erased for sure. The keys themselves are clearly separated, grooved and short, crisp travel.

Above the display is the grill of the additional, earpiece speaker, light sensor and camera lens.

Prominent corners, embossed gussets, and a protective gray-green color. all of these features successfully support the style of the tablet for extreme working conditions. Particularly interesting are the plastic corrugated mugs in the corners. They rise slightly above the body and help protect the device from flat falls. In this case, the inserts can easily leave scratches on the surface of the mirror table, so you need to be careful.

A camera with a flash rises above the rear panel in the center, and the main speaker is brought out below. The volume headroom and sound quality are very good by tablet standards, although two small slots do not give any external prerequisites for this.

How to make your Galaxy tab 2 10.1 faster

The unspoken fashion for curled corners Tab Active rotates 180 degrees: here the corners of the tablet are convex. Ribs are cut at right angles and textured for a more secure grip.

The dock connector is aligned in the middle of the left edge, providing faster charging compared to the Micro-USB port. This is convenient for use in work scenarios where a large number of devices need to be charged frequently. No wonder Galaxy Tab Active is positioned as a tablet “for business”.

There is only one small hole on the top edge. Judging by the fact that the tablet shoots video with stereo sound, this is the second microphone. The main microphone is at the bottom, here we see Micro-USB and a 3.5 mm jack for connecting a headset.

What to do if Galaxy Tab A runs slow | fix slow performance

The back cover of the tablet is removable. To dismantle it, you need to pry it over the slot in the corner. The cover is fixed with many latches, and when you remove it, you are constantly afraid of breaking them. Although during testing, no problems arose with this. When you return the cover to its place, you need to make sure that all latches are closed, feel the perimeter. the operating system constantly gives a hint about this.

The battery is easy to pick up and remove. It was made not in China, but in Vietnam, and the cells. and in general in the homeland of Samsung.

Above the battery there is a combined slot for two cards, and microSD can be installed without removing the battery, and Micro-SIM is no longer.

Let’s put the battery back in place, the back cover and pull the complete rubber cover over the tablet. We’ll pull it like a galosh, which will require some skill.

The case significantly increases the dimensions and weight of the tablet. It is designed so that all functional elements remain accessible. Even above the second microphone, there is a small slot, although this is usually hidden under the stylus anyway.

The stylus is nothing special, it’s just a plastic stick with a rubber tip. It is securely fixed in the groove of the cover with an inconspicuous latch. Pen input in this case does not offer such wide possibilities as in the Galaxy Note series, but the presence of this tool can help out, for example, during prolonged work in the cold.

The case does not fit snugly on the tablet from all sides, there is a slight backlash on the left. The mechanical buttons both on the case and on the tablet itself have a short and crisp stroke. But they require very little effort to push. Because of this, there is a high chance of accidental activation when you pick up the Galaxy Tab Active from the table.

The build quality of the tablet does not deserve any claims, the protected device fully meets the increased requirements imposed by the label “for business”. Unfortunately, the tablet is not designed for general consumers. Samsung Galaxy Tab Active is intended exclusively for the B2B segment. The design of the device is thought out for non-standard conditions of use, when you cannot rely on touch buttons, and in case of a categorical hang-up, you can take and simply remove the battery. Such an opportunity is often provided in specific devices, we recently encountered it in DEPO tablets. But, unlike that couple, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active is attractive from an aesthetic point of view. It is IP67 certified (dustproof and short-term immersion up to 1m). Protection is guaranteed when the tablet is in the case, otherwise the device may stop working quickly. In addition, the case provides protection against mechanical shock according to MIL-STD-810G (dropped from a height of 1.2 m onto a plywood surface).

Screen

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the brightness of the reflected objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are not worse than that of Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens of both tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab Active is on the left, then they can be distinguished by size, since it has a larger screen, and in all the following comparative photos the tested tablet is located below the Nexus 7) :

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active is slightly lighter. the brightness in the photo is 99 versus 94 for the Nexus 7. The tripling of reflected objects in the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active screen is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the outer glass and the matrix surface (screen type OGS. One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with greatly different refractive indices, all other things being equal, such screens look better under strong ambient light, but their repair in case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, better than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear at a slower speed than in the case of regular glass.

With manual brightness control, its maximum value was about 390 cd / m², and the minimum was 5 cd / m². The maximum value is quite high, and given the good anti-glare properties, the image on the screen should be clearly visible in bright daylight. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. Automatic brightness control works according to the light sensor (it is located to the right of the slot of the front speaker). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. You can make adjustments to how this function works by moving the setting slider from.5 to 5 units. Further, for three conditions, we give the screen brightness values for three values of this setting. for −5, 0 and 5. In complete darkness in automatic mode, the brightness decreases to 4.3, 7.2 and 10 cd / m2, respectively (the first two are dark, the third is normal), in an office illuminated with artificial light (approximately 400 lx), the brightness is set at 75, 160 and 310 cd / m2 (darkish. just right. lightish, which corresponds to the specified correction), in a brightly lit environment (corresponds to clear lighting during the day outdoors, but without direct sunlight. 20,000 lux or slightly more). increases to 214, 390 and 390 cd / m². In general, the result of the automatic brightness control function is as expected. Significant modulation of the backlight appears only at the lowest brightness levels, but its frequency is very high, on the order of 12 kHz, so there is virtually no screen flickering.

This tablet uses an IPS type matrix. The micrographs show the typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of micrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without inverting tints and without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen. For comparison, we present photographs in which identical images are displayed on the screens of the Nexus 7 and the tested tablet, with the brightness of both screens set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera forcibly switched to 6500 K. The white field is perpendicular to the plane of the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone. And the test picture:

Color reproduction is good, but the colors on the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active’s screen are pale and color balance varies slightly between the tablets. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but the contrast at an angle in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active decreased to a large extent due to the strong increase in the brightness of the black field. And white box:

The brightness at an angle for both tablets has noticeably decreased (at least 4 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of Samsung, the drop in brightness is less. The black field, when deviated along the diagonal, lightens very strongly and acquires a violet or red-violet tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is about the same for the screens!):

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field, albeit imperfect, but definitely very good:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is quite high. about 890: 1. Black-white-black response time is 21 ms (12 ms on 9 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 33 ms in total. Constructed from 32 points with equal intervals by the numerical value of the shade of gray, the gamma curve did not reveal a blockage in either highlights or shadows, and the exponent of the approximating power function turned out to be 2.16, which is close to the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma the curve practically does not deviate from the power-law dependence:

Apparently, the matrix light filters mix the components to each other to a large extent. The spectra confirm this:

As a result, the colors of images. drawings, photographs and films. oriented to the sRGB space (and there are the overwhelming majority of them) have a reduced saturation. The balance of shades on the scale is somewhat of a compromise, since the color temperature is higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of a black body (ΔE) is on average more than 10, which is considered not a very good indicator even for a consumer device. However, the variation in color temperature and ΔE is not very small, which has a positive effect on the visual perception of color balance. (The dark areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since there the color balance does not really matter, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let’s summarize. The screen has a sufficiently high maximum brightness and has good anti-reflective properties, so the device, most likely, can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. It is also permissible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, no flicker and no air gap in the layers of the screen, excellent uniformity of the black field, as well as an acceptable color balance. Significant disadvantages. low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the surface of the screen and narrowed color gamut. However, overall screen quality is high.

Operating system

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active is powered by the outdated version of Android 4.4.4, and this, of course, is an omission for the well-known brand. All tests were carried out after a firmware update, on version T365XXU1AOA1. In it, the user has approximately 11.97 of 16 GB of permanent memory available.

Apparently Samsung has decided not to install Magazine UX on tablets anymore. Indeed, the usefulness of this log interface has been found to be quite low. The good old TouchWiz has been returned to the Galaxy Tab Active with nice additions. For example, in the form of quick access to the file manager through the icon in the lower left corner.

The list of icons in the Android pull-down menu is customizable. Active buttons are those that are visible when scrolling through the row, available are those that will additionally open by clicking the button in the upper right corner.

This menu has a Toolbar icon that adds an ellipsis button to the screen. When pressed, it brings up a menu where you can put five shortcuts on any installed applications.

It is possible to encrypt the contents of the device and memory card through the settings (Samsung KNOX 2.0 technology, 256-bit AES encryption). Business features also include support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, MDM remote management technology, and VPN connections. In addition, two gestures are supported. turning off active sound signals (put your palm on the screen) and taking a screenshot (swiping with the edge of your palm).

Offsetting from the right edge causes multi-window mode. From the list, you can select two applications that will split the screen along the movable border. Long press the left button below the display to navigate to recent apps and task manager.

The operating system of the tablet works smoothly, turning on takes about 28 seconds. But something is still annoying. Firstly, after each switch-on, the user is shown a reminder to close the lid tightly, and this reminder cannot be turned off. Secondly, without drivers, the contents of the device on the computer will not open at all. By the way, you can download them without unnecessary software on the Samsung developer portal. And thirdly, which is strange, even with the removed SIM-card, the device still for some reason shows an icon of the active mobile network in the tray.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Active has a 4,450mAh battery and can be removed from the tablet without the need for additional tools.

There is a power saving mode in the tablet settings, which cuts off the functionality, so we did not use it in the tests.

In terms of battery life, the tablet effortlessly bypasses all competitors. Low-frequency Cortex-A7 cores allow you to take the Galaxy Tab Active, for example, on a hike for several days. And if you also get an additional battery, then this partner becomes almost ideal for field conditions.

Full charge recovery using a standard adapter (5 V, 2 A) takes about three and a half hours; for this indicator, the device does not stand out.

I bring to your attention my recipe for reviving an old, braking tablet and bringing its software up to date.

It was the turn of the garage cleaning, where I found the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 “P3110 (without a SIM card slot). For fun I turned it on, he blinked the screen and loaded Android 4.1.

It’s great, I thought, a reliable piece of hardware if, after a couple of years in an unheated room, it started up and loaded. Perhaps I’ll take it under my book. Actually, this is how I got the opportunity to re-read the contents of the page several times, while the text scrolls to the next, and step by step watch my favorite TV shows. So, the tablet configuration:

Firstly, with the latest firmware, a bunch of services arrived, namely “update”, “debugging” and “from the manufacturer”, which cannot be disabled, but if you stop them, the performance increases significantly.

Secondly, an outdated version, when trying to deliver 50% of the software from the Play Market, told me that “the software may not be optimized for your OS version”.

After examining the search results, and stumbling upon the mention of the custom firmware Lineage-OS, it was decided to mock the device, since there is still no practical use.

The firmware process is described in a myriad of manuals, but still finding the way took time, publishing my recipe.
UPD: Official site lineage-OS
From here we take custom firmware, an alternative TWRP bootloader, USB cable, Samsung USB drivers (for flooding TWRP firmware), ODIN software of the latest version, Open Gapps. Play Market for the selected version of Android, 8GB microSD card, desktop computer under Windows 10.

deploy Odin from the archive (does not require installation) to disk, install Samsung USB drivers.

2.1. Downloading TWRP. As it turned out, ODIN sews from a special tar or tar.md5 format. And on the TWRP website there is an img file with a fresh bootloader. Android from the 7th version changed the format of the boot image, the bootloader 2.8 does not accept this format. Therefore, paragraph 2.2

2.2. Download the utility for creating a tar file that will accept ODIN. Rename the downloaded TWRP file to “recovery.img” and drop it into the “parts” directory of the utility. We launch the BAT file and after a couple of seconds we take the twrp-3.1-p3110.tar file from the “packaged” directory, having previously answered the question of what we are doing (step 1. the tar file) and the “Y” button.

Downloading Gapps, in my case the processor type is ARM, OS 7.1, piko Gapps (the minimum set for the Play Market to function)

Fill on MicroSD OS, Gapps. We insert into the tablet.

With the tablet turned off, press and hold the power button and the volume down button. We get to the bootloader firmware menu and press “Confirm”. the sound increase button. the screen drivers are not loaded in the bootloader firmware mode.

We connect the tablet and the computer with a cable, a certain Com port should appear in ODIN (in my case, COM6). Select the “AP” item and specify the TWRP firmware file (twrp-3.1-p3110.tar) in it. Reboot the tablet as ODIN completes the firmware.

Hold the power button and add sound until the screen turns off and the tablet model appears again. Next, the TWRP bootloader window will open.

You need to do three things: make a backup of the current firmware for rollback, clear the boot, cashe and data sections, fill in the OS and Gapps.

We backup the partitions, tick the System, Cache, Data, Boot box (Internal Storage can also be specified if you have previously saved important data from there. this is the internal memory of the tablet). Swipe to perform backup, we are waiting.

Gently erase (Wipe) using the Advanced Wipe section. checkboxes opposite System, Cache, Data and swipe.

Let’s start installing the OS: Install, select the lineage-OS archive, add the gapps archive button. execute.

When finished, select Reboot. At this stage, I do not recommend experimenting with the bootloader’s suggestion to install Super SU. my OS did not take off, click Do Not Install.

From errors:
There is not enough RAM to install the OS and Gapps. we select a smaller Gapps archive.
The OS boots (the logo looks like a very sad smile) and nothing happens. remove the microSD and try to boot again
There is no Play Market in the OS. not the same version of Gapps
I still do not have landscape mode for my desktop, although applications are launched in landscape. I am looking for a solution, maybe it will be in the comments.

P.S.: I apologize for the quality of the photo, it didn’t work out better.

Samsung, Galaxy, down

UPD2: Gapps need not be installed, there will be no Google services, Play Market. I am very lazy to keep track of the updates of the applications I use, I put. I noticed that without Gapps, the tablet is much faster. If I used this device as a multimedia device in a car or a TV set-top box, I probably would not install Gapps.
Or organize parental control over apps for kids. completely manual installation of dad-approved apps (and mom).
