How to get remote access to the desktop in Windows 10 through the Quick Help application

Microsoft is improving the Windows 10 operating system, not only fixing various problems, but also adding new features. With the Anniversary update of the operating system (version above 1607), a new application was added. Quick Help. It allows you to quickly and easily provide a remote user access to your computer if it also uses Windows 10 of the required version.

Why do I need Quick Help on Windows 10

The Quick Help program is a built-in analogue of many other applications that offer approximately similar functionality, namely, providing Internet access to a computer for another user. The most famous program with similar features is TeamViewer. However, it is not preinstalled in the operating system, and it needs to be configured, whereas for the operation of “Quick Help” a simple Internet connection is sufficient.

The Quick Help utility can be useful for a computer user:

  • When contacting the support system of the operating system. Microsoft employees, if the user is poorly versed in Windows 10, will be able to remotely connect to his computer and take the necessary actions to fix the error, diagnose or configure the PC;
  • To transfer computer control to another user. For example, if an employee has remained at home, but he needs working materials, another person can turn on his computer and activate the remote access mode through the Quick Help application, which allows you to not only view files, but also transfer them in both directions.

You can think of dozens of situations when you need to get remote access to a computer, and the Quick Help application allows you to do this in a few clicks.

How to get remote access to a computer through Quick Help

Since this utility is built into the Windows 10 operating system, you do not need to download anything to start working with it. Simply start it by clicking “Start”. “Accessories”. “Windows”. “Quick Help” or by starting to type “Quick Help” in the search (“Quick Assist” for a non-localized version of the system).

When the program starts, you will need to do the following:

  1. On the computer of the user who will be connecting to the remote desktop, you need to click “Help”. At this moment, a security code will appear on the screen and the counter will “tick”, during which it will act. For the designated time, you need to have time to make a connection between computers. The security code shown is required to inform the user who opens remote access to his computer;
  2. On the computer of the user who provides access to his desktop, you need to click “Get Help” and in the window that opens, enter the 6-digit security code received from the user who will be connected remotely. After that, you must click “Submit”. A confirmation window appears with the name of the user who is granted access. You need to click “Allow” to start the broadcast.

How to use Quick Help in Windows 10

When the remote user allows access to his computer, another user will open a “work area”. In the middle of the Quick Help utility window, an image that is now displayed on the remote computer will be displayed. A number of tools and service information will appear on top, including:

  • Access Level Information. If the user is authorized under the administrator account of the computer, then “Administrator” will be indicated on the top of “User Mode”. Depending on the account, the set of functions and options that are available to both the user and the remote assistant varies;
  • Felt-tip pen. A useful tool that will allow the user to remotely draw on the broadcast image. The images shown are visible to both users;
  • Full screen. A button that allows you to open the remote access screen to the entire diagonal of the display;
  • Update. If the signal is unstable or there are suspicions of disconnection, the connection update button will allow you to reconnect to the remote computer;
  • Task Manager. Many problems of a remote user can be solved through the “Task Manager”, so a separate button has been created to call him;
  • Pause and stop. Buttons to pause or stop the broadcast.

In addition to the indicated and obvious functions, it is also worth noting the ability to transfer files. The user who has received remote access can copy the file on his computer, after that switch to the remote PC screen and paste the previously copied file into the necessary directory.

It is important to note that at any time, a user who provides remote access to his computer can close the Quick Help application to disable broadcasting.

Quick Help Feature for Remote Access to a Computer in Windows 10

Windows 10 allows you to remotely control other computers with the same version of the operating system. This feature is built into the system and is easier to use than in previous versions of Windows. Without the need to install additional programs, we can control someone else’s computer or ask someone to remotely restore our operating system via the Internet.

Built-in remote control in Windows 10

Remote control of other computers is useful in many situations. For example, if you have problems with the operating system and you cannot solve them yourself, you can contact a friend or friend who also does not have to come to your home. It is enough to give him remote access to your desktop so that he can connect and manage it via the Internet.

Usually, TeamViewer is used for such purposes, which allows you to control a remote PC. But for users who have Windows 10 installed with the Anniversary Update, it will be much easier to get remote access without installing additional programs. The remote desktop function is built into the OS, and in Windows 10 it is much easier to use than it used to be in the form of the so-called “Quick Help”.

Setting up remote access in Windows 10

But before you start, pay attention to the following. This feature requires both users to have the Anniversary Update installed.

Connection in Windows 10 works a little differently than with programs like TeamViewer. TeamViewer has the principle that the user who provides access to his computer must register and receive an identifier and password for it. Then he sends the received data to a friend whom he wants to provide remote access.

In Windows 10, everything is back-to-back — a user who wants to connect to a remote computer takes the first step by registering as a person providing assistance. Gets in this way a unique 6-digit code, which is valid for 10 minutes. Then the one who needs remote support enters the code at home, thereby initiating a connection between the two computers. Let’s take a look at the connection process step by step.

Step 1. Actions of a user who wants to control a remote computer

A user who needs access to a remote PC needs to go to the Start menu. Accessories and select the “Quick Help” option. After enabling this function, you need to select the “Assist” option and log in using your Microsoft account. After entering, a 6-digit code will be displayed.

The code is valid for 10 minutes and acts as the user ID required to connect to another computer. The code needs to be sent to anyone who wants to provide remote access to their device.

Step 2. Actions of the user who provides access to his PC

A user who wants to provide access to his computer needs to receive and copy a 6-digit code. Then go to the Start menu. Accessories and select the option “Quick Help”. After enabling this option, select the “Get Help” item.

A window will be displayed where you will need to enter the identifier of the user to whom we want to provide remote access. After entering the 6-digit code, the connection process will begin. When a message appears stating whether we want to allow other users to connect to their computer, select “Allow”.

Providing assistance in Windows 10

If 10 minutes have not passed and the code is still relevant, then the connection between the computers will be established and the user from the first step will see on his screen the desktop of the person from the second step. Now you can control the mouse and keyboard and perform any operations on the remote PC.

As noted above, this function is primarily intended to receive / provide quick assistance. If your friend has problems, for example, with viruses, Windows or something doesn’t work, instead of explaining it to him in Skype or another messenger, you just need to ask him to provide remote access and perform the appropriate actions for him.

The easiest way to connect to a remote computer

If you or a friend of yours has a different version of Windows or has problems installing the Anniversary Update, you will have to consider other connection options.

There are many applications and programs for managing remote desktop. Some require fine tuning and are not very clear to novice users. However, there is one program that is very simple and amazingly effective.

It will be about AnyDesk, which is very popular and stands out among similar programs. First of all, it is very easy to use, and the connection between computers resembles calling someone on Skype. The program does not require any settings (just dial the unique number of the user whose computer you want to connect to). In addition, the program is portable, which means that it can be run on any PC without installation, for example, from a USB flash drive.

After starting AnyDesk, the main window opens, divided into two parts. One concerns your computer, the second serves to intercept control over another PC.

In the “This workplace” section is your AnyDesk address. It allows other users to connect to your computer. That is, so that someone can get remote access to your PC, pass him this address. This address may also be required if you need to connect to your home computer, for example, from work.

The “Other workstation” section is designed to establish communication with a remote PC. To establish a connection, just enter the address (identifier) of the remote computer and click on the “Connect” button. A window appears on the remote PC with information that someone is trying to establish a connection with him. The user must enable the connection by clicking on the “Accept” button.

Remote Desktop appears in the AnyDesk window. Now you can run programs on it, view files and perform any operations.

Connect to a home computer

For remote access to your home PC, you need to enable the uncontrolled access function. This feature allows you to make a connection without accepting the call by the receiving party.

On your home computer, go to the program’s settings and then to the “Security” tab. In the section “Access during absence”, check the box “Allow uncontrolled access” and enter a strong password in the field.

Now, when you try to connect to the desktop of your home PC from your workstation, a screen will ask you to enter a password. After entering it, get full access over your home PC.

How to enable remote access to administrative balls in Windows 10

Faced that I can’t remotely connect to the default administrative balls (which are with the dollar) on a Windows 10 computer under a user who is a member of the local administrators group. Over, under the built-in local administrator account (by default it is disabled), such access works.

The problem looks a little more detailed. I am trying from a remote computer to access the built-in administrative resources of a Windows 10 computer, which consists of a workgroup (with the firewall disabled) in this way:

  • \\ win10_pc \ C
  • \\ win10_pc \ D
  • \\ win10_pc \ IPC
  • \\ win10_pc \ Admin

In the authorization window I enter the name and password of an account that is in the group of local Windows 10 administrators, which causes an access error (Access is denied). At the same time, access to shared network directories and printers on Windows 10 works fine. Access under the built-in administrator account to administrative resources also works. If this computer is included in the Active Directory domain, then under domain accounts with administrator rights access to admin balls is also not blocked.

The point is another aspect of the security policy that appeared in UAC. The so-called Remote UAC (User Account Control for Remote Connections), which filters access tokens of local records and Microsoft accounts, blocking remote administrative access to such accounts. When accessing under a domain account, such a restriction is not imposed.

You can disable Remote UAC by creating the LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy parameter in the system registry

Tip. This operation slightly reduces the security level of the system.

  1. Open Registry Editor (regedit.Exe)
  2. Go to the registry branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System
  3. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) parameter named LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
  4. Set the LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy parameter to 1
  5. You must restart your computer to apply the changes.

After downloading, try remotely opening the C administrative directory on your Windows 10 computer. Log in using an account in the local administrators group. A browser window should open with the contents of the C: \ drive.

So, we figured out how to use the LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy parameter to allow remote access to hidden admin resources for all local administrators of a Windows computer. These instructions also apply to Windows 8.X, 7, and Vista.

How to set up Windows 10 Remote Desktop

Not every user knows how to properly connect a remote desktop and start working with it. Setting up such a useful tool greatly facilitates the work at the computer. It is possible not to be in the location of the machine, but to manage all the important functions from a distance. This is especially true in large organizations and complex home network structures.

Therefore, we consider the issue more closely in the article below. Of course, you can use special programs that implement the remote desktop, but still you need to know about the standard tools of Windows 10. After all, additional software is an extra load on the axis resources, and the use of native utilities has already been optimized. Setting up the desktop is not very complex and very similar to organizing the desktop in Windows 8. This is natural, because the 10th generation draws on many positive aspects from previous versions.

Training

To implement this functionality, it is important to carry out preliminary training. It is important to configure computers for successful interaction. Connection within the desktop is carried out via the RDP protocol through one local network. Homes are a single router for all devices. It is also possible to implement a single table through a global network. To connect directly, you only need to find out the address of the computer (its IP). It is known that at home this address is constantly amenable to change, so it’s worth it to get to be static for a start:

  • You should go to the control panel.
  • Open the Network and Sharing Center item.
  • Right-click on a local area network connection and select Details in the context menu.
  • Here we look at the IP address data.
  • We leave the window and open the Properties.

  • A list of components that the selected connection operates on appears. Select Internet Protocol Version 4.
  • Click on the Properties button.
  • Click OK, then OK again.

All static address assigned to the computer. If this is not done, then every time you reset the IP connection will be disconnected.

You can try to do this through a router. Almost all models allow you to fix a specific address for the equipment. Naturally, this topic is only for those people who are able to cope with such equipment. You can search for articles on the global network that will answer the question of how IP fixing is implemented in a particular router.

Resolution

On its own, the remote desktop does not start on the Windows 10 operating system, it still needs to allow RDP connection:

  • We go into the control panel and click on the System item.
  • On the left there will be a list in which you need to select Remote Access Settings.

The Settings window opens, in which click on the Allow remote connections to this computer and Allow remote assistance connections to this computer item. It is better to specifically prescribe those users who will connect to the machine. It is also possible to specifically create a user for whom desktop customization will be relevant.

Connection

Now you do not need to install additional software to use the remote desktop. Just go to search for Windows 10 or any other operating system to find the control. Remote desktop. After that, the utility for connecting is launched.

Next, a window appears in which you need to register the IP address of the machine to connect. Next, the computer will require you to enter credentials.

Mac OS Connection

There is also the option to connect the remote desktop via Apple computers. For mobile technology, there is a recipe below. As a clipboard, you will need to download a special utility from the App Store. Most often, it is called Microsoft Remote Desktop. Install it and begin to configure:

  • We click on the button with a plus sign after starting the program.
  • Add the remote desktop by entering the computer IP and username.

See also: Installing Windows 10 on a GPT Disk

  • If required, there is a customization of the screen and other interface elements of a single table.
  • Close the window.

To activate the function, you need to double-click on the created desktop. If all the manipulations were carried out correctly, then the desktop of the Windows 10 operating system will appear.

Connection via mobile axes

Now you can transfer functionality to mobile devices: there is the possibility of connecting via Android and iOS. To do this, you also need to download a special application called Microsoft Remote Desktop. This is on Apple devices. On the basis of Android, another application was created. Microsoft Remote Desktop.

To activate Windows 10 Remote Desktop:

  • Click on the Add button.
  • Enter the connection parameters.
  • Enter the IP address and credentials of Windows 10.

Now you can work.

Work through the global network

It requires sweating. Microsoft developers write that it is necessary to forward port 3389 to the IP address of the computer on Windows 10. Then you need to connect to the router with this port. But this is not the safest setting for a single Windows desktop. It’s better to organize everything through a VPN.

These settings are easy to find on the global network, unfortunately, they are already beyond the scope of this article.
