By Manas Tiwari: Xiaomi may be pushing for a greater share in the premium market with the Mi smartphones, a lot of its success in India can be credited to the Redmi devices, most notably the Redmi Note series. The company had introduced three Redmi Note 10 smartphones earlier this year in March Redmi Note 10, Redmi Note 10 Pro and Redmi Note 10 Pro Max covering different price points between Rs 12,000 and Rs 22,000.

Somehow, it has found enough space in between to add a fourth smartphone to the line-up Redmi Note 10S. It is priced at Rs 14,999 for the base variant, Rs 500 more than the top variant of the Redmi Note 10 and Rs 2,000 less than the base variant of the Redmi Note 10 Pro. The tight positioning is what goes against the Redmi Note 10S, which otherwise, makes for a good value for money smartphone.

For the said price, you get MediaTek Helio G85 processor, 64-megapixel main camera and is also the first Xiaomi smartphone to come with MIUI 12.5, among other features. Is that enough? Should you spend on the Redmi Note 10S? Time to find out.

Redmi Note 10S review: Design

The Redmi Note 10S carries the same Evol design language we saw on the earlier Redmi Note 10 line-up. The phone is more compact than the Pro models and that’s something I instantly liked. It has the same plastic back as the Redmi Note 10. The smartphone is sleek, compact, comfortable to hold and catches fingerprint smudges but, doesn’t show them easily. There is a triple rear camera module in the top-left corner and Redmi branding at the bottom.

There is no doubt that the Redmi Note 10S is a good-looking smartphone. However, you need to consider the fact that the Redmi Note 10 Pro comes with a better looking and more premium glass back for just Rs 2,000 extra. In fact, the price difference between the top end variant of the Redmi Note 10S and base variant of the Redmi Note 10 Pro is just Rs 1,000. And, that’s not the only upgrade you get. We will talk about others later in the review.

Coming to the other design elements, Xiaomi has used a side mounted fingerprint scanner on top of the power button. The right side houses both the volume controls and power buttons. The type-C USB charging port, speaker and 3.5mm headphone jack are at the bottom. The second speaker and IR blaster are on the top.

The smartphone is good for single hand use and will be liked by those who prefer compact form factors. It weighs just 178 grams which further adds to the ease of usage. Xiaomi has used a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which is easily reachable as well. The phone has a dual-SIM tray with a dedicated microSD card slot which means that the storage can be expanded.

The Redmi Note 10S comes in three colour options. Deep Sea Blue, Shadow Black, and Frost White. I got the blue colour variant for review and it looks good. But again, the Mystic Bronze variant Xiaomi had for the Redmi Note 10 Pro looks far better.

Redmi Note 10S review: Display

Xiaomi took a big leap earlier this year when it equipped all the Redmi Note 10 series smartphones with AMOLED displays and the Note 10S has been given a similar treatment. It comes with a 6.43-inch Full HD AMOLED display with 60Hz refresh rate, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The display supports HDR 10 and comes with a peak brightness of 1100 nits.

On paper, the Note 10 Pro has superior specifications again. It comes 120Hz refresh rate, higher peak brightness of 1200 nits and a tinnier hole punch cut out to house the selfie shooter.

The Redmi Note 10S still has a pretty good display. The colours look good on screen, the touch response rate is satisfactory and even the bezels have been kept quite thin. There is also support for WideVine L1 certification, so you will be able to stream high quality content on OTT platforms.

Redmi Note 10S review: Camera

Xiaomi has differentiated the Redmi Note 10S from the Redmi Note 10 by using a better 64-megapixel main camera. By doing so, it has taken this smartphone closer to the Redmi Note 10 Pro which comes with the same lens. Overall, the Redmi Note 10S comes with a quad rear camera setup which consists of a 64-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 2-megapixel macro sensor, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Up front, the Redmi Note 10S features a 13-megapixel selfie shooter.

The camera app is the usual that you get on Xiaomi phones. It has different modes including Photo, Video, Portrait and Pro modes. The other options include Night Mode and 64MP.

The main camera does a good job for the price. The images come out well, have good sharpness and the colours are also true. You can see in the image samples that the main camera also adds blur to the background. However, the bokeh effect is more aggressive on the portrait mode.

The images clicked using the portrait mode are equally impressive, but colour accuracy goes for a toss. As you can see in the samples, the portrait shots are more saturated than the normal images, and it’s up to you to decide if it’s good or bad. Personally, I prefer natural colour tones.

The lowlight shots taken from close up are well lit and sharp. The dynamic range is poor though and if there is no external light source, images in night are below average.

The images taken from the ultra-wide angle sensor has good dynamic range and retains a lot of details. However, you can clearly see a lot of noise once you zoom into these images. But, that’s the case with most affordable smartphones. The macro lens takes more time to FOCUS than on the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max we had reviewed earlier but manages to deliver decent images eventually.

The selfie shooter disappoints. The images from the front camera are passable but over saturate colours. You can see in the image samples that my t-shirt is almost burnt in the day selfies. The lowlight selfies are bright but lack sharpness.

The Redmi Note 10S can shoot 1080p videos in 30 and 60fps, and 4K footage in 30fps as well. The video quality is good but the stabilisation could have been better.

Redmi Note 10S quick review: Performance

One thing that totally separates the Redmi Note 10S from other Redmi Note 10 series smartphones is its chipset. The smartphone comes with MediaTek’s Helio G95 SoC. This was MediaTek’s 2020 chip for affordable smartphones. It is a decent chip that handles your daily tasks with ease. You don’t face much issue while swiping through apps, browsing the internet or watching YouTube videos.

I did notice that apps usually take that extra second to load. The gaming performance wasn’t also that great. Call of Duty Mobile ran well on low graphics pre-set but struggled beyond that. It could feel few lags while running Asphalt 9 as well. So, if you are looking for a phone for gaming, I think you will be served better by the Redmi Note 10 Pro or Redmi Note 10 Pro Max.

The phone comes in two configurations 6GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage priced at Rs 14,999 and 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage priced at Rs 15,999.

Redmi Note 10S quick review: Software

The Redmi Note 10S is our first look at MIUI 12.5 in India. The new software brings a lot of updates including the ability to remove pre-installed apps from the phone. I got the option to remove Mi Store and Mi Credit, but not Mi Pay or Get Apps. Xiaomi has told India Today Tech that there are total nine apps that can’t be removed. The number has been brought down from over 20 apps. A welcome move.

A new update has also been added on the camera where you can now open a tray that shows different options with animated icons. The volume controller has been also been changed and the new one is kind of good. I now have two new icons under the volume bar first to put the phone on silent while second to put notifications and calls on silent. I hope smartphone manufacturers start giving out option to put just notifications on silent.

There is no doubt that the MIUI 12.5 feels more refined than the previous versions. It’s still far from you giving you an Oxygen OS-like experience but, is surely a step in the right direction.

Redmi Note 10S quick review: Battery

Redmi Note 10S packs a big enough 5000mAh pack and comes with a 33W fast charger inside the box. The battery is good enough to last for a day and the charger also juices it up quite quickly.

Redmi Note 10S quick review: Final Verdict

Rahul Dravid would have been the greatest Indian batsman, if Sachin Tendulkar didn’t exist. Valtteri Bottas would have won a F1 title, if Lewis Hamilton wasn’t a Mercedes driver. Similarly, the Redmi Note 10S would have been an obvious choice around the Rs 15,000 mark, if the Redmi Note 10 Pro wasn’t launched. For only a few extra bucks, Xiaomi’s Pro smartphone offers a glass back, a more reliable processor, a 120Hz panel, same camera system and a more premium feel.

This makes me wonder if the Redmi Note 10S is a good smartphone that probably wasn’t needed! Anyway, if you can push your budget by Rs 1,000-Rs 2,000, you should definitely go for the Redmi Note 10 Pro. Else, the Redmi Note 10S isn’t a bad option either.

While the Redmi Note 10S impresses with superlative battery life and strong performance while gaming, it is not the all-rounder that the Note 10 Pro is given its average camera and inferior display. It remains a solid 4G only option for someone on a tight budget

Our Verdict

In typical Xiaomi style, the Redmi Note 10S represents excellent value for money, but this time around doubles down on battery life and graphical performance. It lets down with camera quality and an inferior panel to its Redmi Note 10 brethren.

What Nokia used to be in India and most parts of Europe in the mid-2000s, Xiaomi has established that level of dominance in India in the last 7 years. Most of that success has been on the bedrock of its Redmi line of affordable smartphones which have often provided impressive and cutting edge hardware specifications and its crude yet effective Mi UI which has been subsidised by ads.

After launching the superb Redmi Note 10 series of phones, it decided to launch yet another one called the Redmi Note 10S which slots between the entry-level Redmi Note 10 and Redmi Note 10 Pro. It is a strange phone by Xiaomi which clutters its portfolio, though it has a FOCUS on gaming which may attract the ravenous Call Of Duty Mobile and PUBG crowd.

Design Build

The Redmi Note 10S more or less reuses the design language used in the Redmi Note 10 line that was launched earlier in the year. It’s quite a standard look, however, it has this cool blue (ocean blue) gradient colour which also gets a matte finish that makes it nice to hold in the palm.

It is not much of a smudge magnet as well and it also gets IP53 splash and dust resistance like most Xiaomi phones. It incorporates even a 3.5mm headphone jack and also an IR blaster which is a signature feature that Xiaomi’s phones provide.

The rear of the phone houses the camera array which provides a bit of bump but also provides a neat aesthetic that reminds one of a vintage camera. This bump, though, also annoyingly ensures that the phone never lays flat on a table. There are also stereo speakers which are pretty loud but average in clarity, though should be adequate for anyone on the go.

Interestingly, it is lighter than the Redmi Note 10 Pro at 178g, however, it is slightly thicker at 8.3mm. It remains a pretty easy phone to hold by modern standards, though considering the 6.43in screen size, it is undeniably large.

Xiaomi provides a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which makes things quite easy to unlock the phone since it is embedded in the power button — it is Rapid and very effective.

Largely, it is a nicely designed phone with a unique colour that’s not too dissimilar from its Redmi cousins from 2021. It also helps that the build quality of the phone is on point for the price.

Screen

Xiaomi has been outfitting its Redmi phones with really impressive displays and the Redmi Note 10S is no different. However, it misses out on the fluidity yielded by the 120Hz refresh rate that its brethren comes with. It doesn’t even have 90Hz like the Note 10 5G as a compromise.

It’s a bit disappointing considering the gaming credentials of the MediaTek chip but that aside, it presents saturated and vivid colours, good viewing angles and decent levels of luminosity. It gets 1100 nits of peak brightness which is adequate even in bright outdoor conditions, coupled with Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

It is a nice screen for watching videos on Netflix or reading text. Generally, it hits the spot, though considering you can get a Redmi Note 10 Pro with a high refresh rate screen, that’s where things become a little confusing. And undeniably, the “pro” model has the better panel.

Like the other Redmi Note 10 series phones it also doesn’t get HDR10 support which weakens its content consumption credentials somewhat.

But in terms of looks, it is excellent — you’re mostly looking at all screens and barely any bezel, though there is a bit of it on the lip of the phone. The hole punch camera is on the top left and is basically a glorified dot so it also doesn’t get in the way.

Specs Performance

Perhaps the most curious thing about the Redmi Note 10S is the fact it runs on the MediaTek Helio G95 processor which was there also in the Redmi Note 8 Pro. It is a 12nm chip with an octa-core architecture and a Mali G76 MC4 graphics processing unit (GPU), coupled with 6GB RAM and up to 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage with support for microSD card memory expansion.

Why this is a curious spec is because Xiaomi has used Qualcomm Snapdragon chip in most of the other models. MediaTek has made quite a big deal about the gaming potential of this chip which is backed up with some decently fast memory and copious amounts of DDR4x RAM.

Day to day performance was smooth with it handling multitasking as well pretty decently. Multitasking was a breeze with even 20 apps open at the same time and even while I was constantly switching between tabs on chrome.

Even while gaming, playing graphically intensive games like Call of Duty Mobile, I managed to run it in medium settings without any perceptible frame rate drops and the experience was impressive.

Benchmark results were also quite decent, though GFXBench failed to run. Geekbench scores averaged out to around 500 for the single-core benchmark, with it scoring upwards of 500 twice and being stuck on 499 the first time I ran it. In the multi-core result it the lowest it scored was 1625.

These results are pretty competitive and you can see how the 10S compares to rivals including the Xiaomi Poco M3 Pro 5G, Realme 7 and Oppo A9 in the chart above.

Cameras

Xiaomi will tell you that it gets a quad-camera system, but honestly, this is more of a dual-camera phone which is decidedly average and is not in the same league as the Redmi Note 10 Pro. It officially has a primary 64Mp camera, an 8Mp ultra-wide sensor and twin 2Mp macro and depth sensors. There is a 13Mp front-facing camera that hides in the hole punch of the screen.

The main 64Mp camera does well when you’re trying to take a close up photo or even a shot in portrait mode, but the moment you try to take wide landscapes, the image quality becomes average as there is a great loss of detail. The images are slightly saturated which is a signature Xiaomi trait which is not a big issue for me but what peeves me is the over-sharpening.

Portrait shots are the highlight of this phone as they get good edge detection when given good lighting, but considering the price of the phone, the moon shouldn’t be expected.

Low light photography isn’t the strongest suit of the 10S. Images, even when using the night mode, come out very grainy and also you need a really steady hand to get something usable considering there is no OIS (optical image stabilistaion).

The low-resolution macro camera can at times push out a usable shot but it will be utterly pointless when given poor lighting. The ultra-wide lens come in handy for landscape shots but again, it shouldn’t be used in low-light situations. It is a bit of hit or miss and the low resolution of 8Mp doesn’t help it get a lot of detail.

The front-facing camera is decent for selfies and Instagram stories but it isn’t going to be blowing anyone’s mind.

The camera app also comes with an assortment of modes like a full 64Mp resolution mode which again isn’t very handy for most people. The UI is a bit complex as if you want to use something like a macro or night mode it is hidden in a different menu, though you can turn the AI mode on and it will do a bit of scene detection and trigger the appropriate mode.

For video recording, Xiaomi offers up to 4K video recording at 30 frames per second from the main camera. But this isn’t stabilised. When you drop the resolution down to 1080p then electronic stabilisation does kick in and is quite usable, but should still be used mostly when there is good lighting.

Battery Life

In the battery mark test by PCMark, the Redmi 10S scored an impressive 13 hours and 19 minutes on the work 3.0 test which is longer than many phones.

In real-world testing, I managed to never fully drain this phone during the day. It would always be left with more than 30% juice. Of course, it helped that it gets a similar 5,000mAh battery that is found in the Redmi Note 10 Pro but since the display here is limited to 60Hz, its battery life was prodigious.

My use involved using WhatsApp, playing some games to test the phone, zoom video calls, web browsing, taking a lot of pictures with its quad-camera array and using boatloads of and Instagram. I also used photo editing software like VSCO and Snapseed apart from Simple Note, Google docs and Gmail apart from making phone calls. For content consumption, I YouTubed a lot and also watched shows on Netflix apart from listening to music via Apple Music.

I didn’t need Google Maps for navigation but even with high usage, I managed to never get less than 6 hours of screen on time on this phone.

This is a true one-day battery life phone but if your consumption is lighter than mine then you can even potentially expend the battery life of this phone to two days on a single charge which is impressive but expected because that’s what the Redmi Note Series is known for.

Charging the phone wasn’t the quickest process even with a 33W fast charger as its humongous battery does take some time to get fully juiced up. It would take more than an hour for the phone to reach 0-100 per cent took more than an hour.

Software

The Redmi Note 10S was the first phone Xiaomi launched in India with MiUI 12.5 which is based on Android 11.

It is a decent improvement over MiUI 11 as now it is increasingly becoming close to stock Android, but there are many Xiaomi customisations that are still intact. The interface itself is quite smooth but it gets a little convoluted because of the number of pre-loaded apps and bloatware plus the fact that Xiaomi beams unsolicited ads inside the interface.

The notification and lock screen in particular are notorious for slipping in ads which even from a daily use perspective is irritating. There is a duplication of even app stores as the Xiaomi Getapps store is glorified bloatware.

Price

The Redmi Note 10S has been launched in the UK is available via Amazon and Mi.com. In the US, the global variant of the same can be had via Amazon.com.

It joins some of the other models in the Redmi Note 10 line of phones like the Redmi Note 10 Pro. It starts at £159 for the 6/64GB variant and £229 pounds or (unofficially) US278 for the 6/128GB variant. In the US, the base level 64GB model isn’t available.

Those in India can purchase the Note 10S from Amazon, Mi.com and Reliance Digital.

Considering what’s available in the UK, especially the Redmi Note 10 Pro, which offers a better camera system, a high refresh rate screen, for most people the small extra cost shouldn’t make a huge difference.

Users who want 5G would be better off opting for the Redmi Note 10 5G model or can also pay a little higher and opt for the OnePlus Nord CE 5G. The Redmi Note 10S is best suited for someone looking for epic battery life.

Verdict

This is the first Redmi Note phone that is just good enough. At times one needs to question the reason for its existence since there are other great Redmi Note 10 models that can provide everything this phone can in a more capable package.

That being said it comes with its own set of strengths — its battery life is definitely superior to its other Redmi Note 10 cousins and its new blue colour is very attractive.

But at a budget price, it just about makes the cut, as spending slightly more will get you a better screen and camera combination in a knockout package that too from the house Xiaomi.

Por segundo año consecutivo, una de las familias clave de Xiaomi, la Redmi Note, acoge a cuatro modelos distintos con diferencias clave entre Gad uno de sus miembros.

El nuevo Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S es el modelo más ambicioso de los tres que quedan justo por detrás del Redmi Note 10 Pro que ya analizamos en Xataka. Sobre la mesa nos encontramos los argumentos ya habituales de esta familia: ficha técnica y diseño a un precio reducido. Veamos si la fórmula les sigue funcionando.

La seña de identidad de Xiaomi

Hablar de terminales grandes es complicado cuando es muy difícil encontrar smartphones que no estén alrededor de las 6-6.5 pulgadas de pantalla. Si escoges el Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S como tu próximo teléfono, ya sabes que te llevas un modelo generoso en altura pero que nos ha resultado bastante cómodo y agradable en mano.

El peso y grosor, de alrededor de 180 gramos y 8 mm respectivamente, convierten al Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S es un teléfono que no cansa y que admite un agarre seguro. Además, ofrece un perfil IP53 de protección contra polvo y salpicaduras.

La personalidad de la familia Redmi Note 10 la encontramos en la parte posterior, donde la trasera se curva ligeramente y lo hace con un brillo y tono que le sienta muy bien al terminal. Eso sí, ese acabado hace que la suciedad y especialmente las huellas, sean un elemento más del terminal.

Aunque la parte trasera del Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S es prácticamente idéntica en apariencia a la de su hermano mayor, el Note 10 Pro, hay una diferencia sustancial en el módulo de cámara, el cual solo dispone de “una altura”.

Si bien a nivel estético no vamos a notar la diferencia, en la práctica resulta un terminal que acusa menos la posición tendida sobre la mesa, cojeando solamente cuando tocamos la zona superior izquierda del terminal.

Lector de huellas lateral y puerto de auriculares

El marco metálico, bien engarzado con la trasera y frontal con protección Gorilla Glass 3, aloja los principales elementos físicos del Redmi Note 10S.

En la parte inferior encontramos el puerto USB-C, un puerto de auriculares y uno de los altavoces principales. He aquí una de las buenas noticias de este Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S, que no es otra que el sistema de altavoces estéreo, encontrando el segundo miembro en el marco superior y sin compartir espacio con el auricular del teléfono.

El resto de elementos físicos se reparten en lateral izquierdo, con la bandeja triple para una microSD y dos SIM (es DualSIM), así como en el derecho, donde está situado el control de volumen y el botón de encendido. Éste hace las veces de lector de huellas, con un funcionamiento correcto tanto en precisión como en velocidad de acción. También se incluye identificación de rostros.

AMOLED básica de 60 Hz

Al final, con un smartphone actual, donde más tiempo pasamos es frente a su pantalla. En este Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S nos encontramos con un panel de tipo AMOLED de 6.43 pulgadas y resolución de 2400×1080 píxeles, resultando en una densidad de 409 ppp. Buen equilibrio para mantener una imagen nítida y entrar en los estándares de la gama media asequible.

El panel AMOLED que monta este Redmi Note 10S ofrece un contraste alto de 4500000:1, con un brillo de 700 nits y modo de color de 8 bits. La gran ausencia, como habréis deducido, es una tasa de refresco mayor de 60 Hz. Aquí no hay opción a darle un extra de fluidez, algo que echamos de menos para este nivel de terminal y que, queramos o no, penaliza la experiencia en el día a día con el teléfono.

Los datos técnicos de la pantalla del Redmi Note 10S se trasladan de manera fiel a nuestra experiencia con él. La pantalla se nota que es AMOLED por el contraste e intensidad de los colores. Está además bien calibrada de fábrica, contando con tres modos de color: automático (el recomendado), saturado y estándar. En todos ellos podemos ajustar de manera fina la temperatura de color.

Otros modos con los que cuenta la pantalla de este nuevo teléfono Xiaomi son el modo lectura (que podemos programar o activar directamente), el modo antiparpadeo y el de pantalla siempre activa, con una buena dosis de personalización como es habitual en los terminales de Xiaomi con capa MIUI.

El modo de notificaciones, a falta de un LED estándar, se basa en el uso de la pantalla bloqueada, donde podemos escoger si queremos que ésta se ilumine o lo hagan solo los marcos (con diferentes efectos disponibles).

Si bien en interiores la pantalla AMOLED, tanto por brillo como por resolución, es agradable de usar y más que suficiente, en exteriores resulta algo más complicado poder disfrutarla. El panel, pese a ser AMOLED, necesita un contraste más alto y un brillo extra (además de reducir reflejos) para que con luz solar intensa la experiencia sea plena.

Además del justo nivel de la pantalla AMOLED de este Redmi Note 10S, hay detalles que no acaban de casarme con el precio del equipo.

El más evidente es la asimetría en los marcos del terminal (que no son muy reducidos tampoco), con el inferior siendo claramente más grande y desentonando demasiado en la sensación global con el smartphone en mano.

En cuanto al agujero en la pantalla para colocar la cámara secundaria, está centrado en la parte superior de la pantalla y no resulta especialmente invasor en la experiencia multimedia con el terminal.

Altavoces estéreo para disfrutar

Sin que podamos decir que el sonido del Redmi Note 10S es un alarde de fidelidad ni mucho menos, hay que alabar que Xiaomi no descuide en exceso un apartado en el que si que tenemos que indicar que el nuevo Xiaomi destaca.

El sonido me ha resultado algo plano, sin presencia especialmente destacada de graves, pero que resulta muy disfrutare por su potencia global y la sensación especial que dan los dos altavoces estéreo tanto en juegos como con vídeos. Minipunto para Xiaomi, el cual acoge los ajustes básicos de sonido que uno espera de su capa cuando le conectamos auriculares de la marca porque, ¿hemos dicho ya que no deja de lado el puerto de 3.5 mm? Por cierto, colocado en la parte inferior, por si es lo que preferís.

Potencia para juegos pero sin 5G

Una de las peculiaridades del Redmi Note 10S de Xiaomi es su apuesta por el procesador MediaTek Helio G95, evolución del G90T del curso pasado y centrado plenamente en el rendimiento con juegos.

Este SoC incluye ocho núcleos, dos de ellos Cortex A75 a 2,05 GHz, y otros seis Cortex A55 a 2 GHz. Lo más significativo es que por su elección perdemos la conectividad 5G. Tampoco añade conectividad Wi-Fi 6, teniendo que conformarnos con Wi-Fi 5, eso sí, de doble banda.

El objetivo del mismo es claramente destacar en benchmarks, especialmente en lo que respecta a juegos. Y no queda mal posicionado en ello, destacando además por el poco calentamiento que sufre incluso jugando.
