No Sound On Windows 10 Computer Speakers

Good day.

This article, based on personal experience, is a kind of collection of reasons why a sound may not be lost on a computer. Most of the reasons, by the way, can be easily eliminated by yourself! To begin with, it should be distinguished that sound may be lost for software and hardware reasons. For example, you can check the performance of the speakers on another computer or audio / equipment. If they are working and there is sound, then most likely there are questions to the software part of the computer (but more on that).

And so, let’s get started

6 reasons why there is no sound. 1. Non-working speakers (cords are often bent and broken)

This is the first thing to do when setting up the sound and speakers on your computer! And sometimes, you know, there are such incidents: you come to help a person solve a problem with sound, but he turns out to forget about the wires

In addition, perhaps you connected them to the wrong input. The fact is that there are several outputs on the sound card of a computer: for a microphone, for speakers (headphones). Typically, for a microphone, the output is pink, for speakers it is green. Pay attention to it! Also, here is a short article about connecting headphones, where this issue was discussed in more detail.

Fig. 1. Cord for connecting speakers.

Sometimes it happens that the inputs are very worn out, and they just need to be slightly corrected: remove and reinsert. You can also clean your computer from dust, at the same time.
Also pay attention to whether the columns themselves are included. On the front side of many devices, you can notice a small LED that signals that the speakers are connected to the computer.

Fig. 2. These speakers are turned on because the green LED on the device is lit.

By the way, if you turn up the volume to the maximum in the columns, you can hear a characteristic “hiss”. Pay all this attention. Despite the elementary nature, in most cases there are problems with just this

2. The sound is reduced in the settings

The second thing to do is to check whether everything is in order with the computer settings; it is possible that in Windows programmatically the sound is minimized or turned off in the control panel of sound devices. Perhaps, if it is simply reduced to the minimum, there is sound. it plays very weakly and is simply not heard.

Let’s show the setup using the example of Windows 10 (in Windows 7, 8 everything will be the same).

1) Open the control panel, then go to the “equipment and sounds” section.

2) Next, open the “sounds” tab (see. Fig. 3).

Fig. 3. Equipment and sound

3) In your “sound” tab you should see audio devices (including speakers, headphones) connected to the computer. Select the desired speakers and click on their properties (see. Fig. 4).

Fig. 4. Speaker Properties (Sound)

4) In the first tab that opens before you (“general”) you need to look carefully at two things:

  • – whether the device was determined ?, if not, you need drivers for it. If they are not there, use one of the utilities to determine the characteristics of the computer; the utility will also recommend where to download the necessary driver;
  • – Look at the bottom of the window, and whether the device is turned on. If not, be sure to turn it on.

5) Without closing the window, go to the “levels” masonry. Look at the volume level, should be more than 80-90%. At least until you get a sound, and then adjust it (see Fig. 6).

Fig. 6. Volume Levels

6) In the “additional” tab there is a special button for checking the sound. when you press it, you should play a short melody (5-6 seconds). If you don’t hear it, go to the next step, saving the settings.

7) You can, by the way, again go to the “control panel / equipment and sounds” and open the “volume settings”, as shown in Fig. 8.

Fig. 8. Volume setting

Here we are interested in whether the sound is reduced to a minimum. By the way, in this tab you can even reduce the sound of a certain type, for example, all that is heard in the Firefox browser.

Fig. 9. Volume in programs

In the lower right corner (next to the clock) there are also volume settings. Check if the normal volume level is there and the speaker is not muted, as in the picture below. If all is well, you can go to step 3.

Fig. 10. Adjust the volume on the computer.

Important! In addition to the Windows settings, be sure to pay attention to the volume of the speakers themselves. Perhaps the regulator is at a minimum!

3. No driver for sound card

Most often, there are problems with drivers for and sound cards on the computer That is why, the third step in restoring sound is to check the drivers. Perhaps you could already identify this problem in the previous step

To determine if everything is OK with them, go to the device manager. To do this, open the control panel, then open the “Hardware and Sound” tab, and then start the device manager. This is the fastest way (see Figure 11).

Fig. 11. Equipment and sound

In the device manager, we are interested in the tab “Sound, gaming and devices.” If you have a sound card and it is connected: here it should be displayed.

1) If the device is displayed and an exclamation point (or red) is lit in front of it, it means the driver is not working correctly, or not installed at all. In this case, you need to download the driver version you need. By the way, I like to use the Everest program. it will not only show the device model of your card, but also tell you where to download the necessary drivers for it.

A great way to update and check drivers is to use utilities for auto-updating and searching for drivers for any equipment in your PC: https://pcpro100.info/obnovleniya-drayverov/. Highly recommend!

2) If there is a sound card, but Windows does not see it Anything can be here. It is possible that the device is not working properly, or you connected it poorly. I recommend first to clean the computer from dust, blow out the slot if you do not have a sound card. In general, in this case, the problem is most likely with the hardware of the computer (or that the device is turned off in BIOS, about Bos, see a little later in the article).

Fig. 12. Device Manager

It also makes sense to update your drivers or install drivers of a different version: older, or newer. It often happens that developers are not able to foresee all possible computer configurations and it is possible that some drivers conflict between your system.

4. No codecs on audio /

If when you turn on the computer you have sound (you hear, for example, Windows greeting), and when you turn on some (AVI, MP4, Divx, WMV, etc.), the problem is either in the player, or in the codecs, or in the file itself (it may be corrupted, try opening another file).

1) If there is a problem with the player. I recommend that you install another and try. For example, the KMP player gives excellent results. It already has codecs built-in and optimized for its operation, thanks to which it can open most files.

2) If the problem is with codecs. I will advise you to do two things. The first is to remove your old codecs from the system completely.

And secondly, install the full set of codecs. K-Lite Codec Pack. Firstly, this package has an excellent and fast Media Player, and secondly, all the most popular codecs that open all the most popular and audio formats will be installed.

By the way, it is important not only to install them, but to install them correctly, i.e. full set. To do this, download the full set and during installation select the “Lots of Stuff” mode (for more details, see the article on codecs in the link a little higher).

5. Misconfigured BIOS

If you have a built-in sound card, check the BIOS settings. If the sound device is turned off in the settings, then it is unlikely that you can make it work in Windows. Frankly, usually this problem is rare, because By default, in the BIOS settings, the sound card is turned on.

To enter these settings, press the F2 or Del button (depending on the PC) when you turn on the computer. If you can’t get in, try looking at the computer’s boot screen as soon as you turn it on, take a closer look. Usually on it is always written a button to enter the BIOS.

For example, the ACER computer turns on. the DEL button is written below. to enter the BIOS (see Fig. 14).

If you have any difficulties, I recommend that you read my article on how to enter the BIOS: https://pcpro100.info/kak-voyti-v-bios-klavishi-vhoda/

Fig. 14. Button to enter the BIOS

In BIOS, you need to look for a string containing the word “Integrated”.

Fig. 15. Integrated Peripherals

In the list you need to find your audio device and see if it is turned on. In Figure 16 (below) it is turned on, if you have Disabled opposite, change it to Enabled or Auto.

Fig. 16. Turning on AC97 Audio

After that, you can exit the BIOS, saving the settings.

6. Viruses and adware

Where are we without viruses over, there are so many of them that it is not known what they can even present.

First, pay attention to the operation of the computer as a whole. If there are frequent freezes, antivirus operations, “brakes” out of the blue. Perhaps you really got the virus, and not one.

The best option would be to check your computer for viruses with some modern antivirus with updated databases. In one of the articles earlier, I cited the best at the beginning of 2016: https://pcpro100.info/luchshie-antivirusyi-2016/

By the way, DrWeb CureIt antivirus shows good results, it is not even necessary to install it. Just download and check.

Secondly, I recommend checking your computer using an emergency boot disk or flash drive (the so-called Live CD). Whoever has never encountered one, I’ll say: it’s as if you are loading a ready-made operating system from a CD (flash drive) that has an antivirus. By the way, it is possible that you will have a sound in it. If so, then most likely you have problems with Windows and may have to reinstall it

7. Sound recovery if all else fails

Here I will give some tips, maybe they will help you.

1) If you had a sound before, but not now. maybe you installed some programs or drivers that caused a hardware conflict. With this option, it makes sense to try to restore the system.

2) If there is another sound card or other speakers, try connecting them to the computer and reinstalling the drivers on them again (while removing the drivers from the system to old devices that you disabled).

3) If all the previous points did not help, you can take a chance and reinstall Windows 7. Then install the sound drivers immediately and if a sound suddenly appears, look carefully after each installed program. Most likely you will immediately notice the culprit: a driver or a program that previously conflicted

4) Alternatively, connect headphones instead of speakers (speakers instead of headphones). Maybe you should contact a specialist
