LG uses WebOS as its Smart TV operating system, which provides efficient and simple operation of the TV, network, and internet streaming features, including access to an abundant list of streaming channels, and full web browsing similar to a PC.

Enter LG Channels

To make the WebOS platform even more efficient, LG has partnered with Xumo to include an additional streaming app feature called LG Channels (formerly LG Channel Plus).

Although the Xumo App is an option for some other brands, LG includes it as part of the WebOS core experience for select FHD and UHD 2012-2018 LG LED/LCD or OLED Smart TV models running or updated to WebOS 4.0 as well as select 2019 models running WebOS 4.5.

What Is LG Channels?

LG Channels provides direct access, via an onscreen app icon, to more than 100 streaming channels without having to download and install each one. All the channels are free to view but may contain ads.

The channels offer news, sports, and entertainment from a variety of sources.

Some of the featured channels include:

  • CBS News
  • Funny or Die
  • PBS Digital Studios
  • Sports Illustrated
  • Young Hollywood
  • TMZ

How to Activate LG Channels

If the LG Channels app icon isn’t already showing your LG TV’s menu bar, or the icon isn’t active, here is how to activate it.

  • Press Home on your TV Remote.

Depending on the model of your LG TV, the remote control may look different than the one shown, with the buttons arranged differently. However, the appearance of the home button and other button icons is the same.

On the TV’s home screen, select Settings.

If your remote control has a Settings button, you can click on that instead of having to hit the home button first.

After selecting the Settings Icon on your remote or home page, the Settings Menu will display on either the left or right side of the TV screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the settings menu and select All Settings.

Select Channels

Make sure that LGChannels is set to ON.

If you receive a notice that a new version or update is available, select the update. The update may periodically provide new channels.

Upon turning on LG Channels, you might see a Viewing Restriction Disclaimer. Select OK to continue.

Select the LGChannels icon on LG TV’s WebOS Menu Bar.

Start watching LG Channels.

LG Channels Content Navigation

Once activated, you can access LG Channels directly from the icon located on the main menu bar that runs along the bottom of the TV screen.

When you click on the LG Channels icon, it takes you to a full-page channel navigation menu.

As you scroll through the menu, a brief description of each channel you highlight will display in the top portion of the screen. You will also notice that each channel also has an assigned number, which you can also use to access the channel if you don’t want to scroll.

You can tag your favorite channels with a star so that they are easier to find later, as well.

In all cases, when you find what you want, select it to watch.

LG Channels Listing Combined with Antenna TV Listings

If you receive over-the-air TV broadcasts via antenna and have also activated LG Channels, you can access both via the Live TV icon on the LG TV menu bar.

Upon selecting the Live TV icon, you will have access to a combined list of over-the-air and LG channels. The LG channel offerings are mixed right in with a TV’s OTA channel listings, so you don’t have to choose one or the other. You can browse everything at once.

Unlike cable/satellite and streaming services, over-the-air TV viewers don’t have to leave the main channel selection menu to access the new internet streaming channels that LG Channels offers.

For OTA TV viewers, LG Channels provides more seamless content access and navigation, making finding that favorite show or niche content more accessible and faster.

OTA TV channels start with a number or letter, whereas LG Channels always begin with the letters IP.

LG Channels By Other Names

XUMO has also expanded the LG Channels concept to other TV brands, including:

  • Hisense/Sharp: 60 channels are available through the virtual input selection feature.
  • Magnavox, Sanyo, and Philips Roku TVs and Roku Media Streamers: The XUMO App can be added on Roku media streamers and Roku TVs via the Roku Channel Store.
  • Samsung: The Xumo App is available via the Samsung App Store.
  • Vizio: Available through Vizio TVs featuring Internet Apps Plus. Vizio also offers an additional alternative in partnership with Pluto TV that it refers to as WatchFree on 2018 models going forward.

The Bottom Line

LG’s partnership with XUMO is part of a continuing trend that blurs the steps usually needed to access broadcast, cable, satellite, and internet streaming content.

Instead of the consumer having to figure out which menu holds a specific content provider or app, it can all be in one integrated list similar to a channel guide you might find for cable or satellite TV.

Where your programming comes from isn’t the main concern – your TV should be able to access and deliver it to you without you having to find it.

android, smart, here, best, apps

For best access speed and performance, LG/XUMO suggests an internet speed of at least 5mbps.

First, connect an antenna or cable directly to the LG TV. Then, depending on your TV, click Settings/Home on the remote control. Go to Channels, and select Auto Tuning. If prompted to check your antenna connection, select Yes/OK. The TV will scan for all types of channels, including local antenna channels.

To add more LG channels/apps, go to the LG app store: On the TV remote, click Start/Home, choose Apps, and open the LG Content Store. Select Premium, choose a channel to add, and Install.

Turn to a channel you want to watch, then click Home on the remote My Programs. Next, choose the plus sign on the screen to select the channel you are currently watching. Then, change channels and click the plus sign to add the second channel. Select Multi-view. From the two channels you’ve selected, choose the one to add as the smaller picture-in-picture channel. The other channel will display larger.

You can control your TV with the LG TV Plus Smart TV remote app for iOS and Android. Download the LG TV Plus app for iOS from the App Store, or download the app for Android from Google Play.

Got a new LG Smart TV? Here are the best apps you need to download

If you picked up a brand-new LG Smart TV this year, you have to get your money’s worth. Sure, you can sit down and watch cable TV all night long, but that’s not why you bought a Smart TV — we’re here to talk TV apps. Before you download anything and everything, we have some recommendations. Here are the best LG Smart TV apps you can download right now.

Before we get started, it’s important to remember that LG’s Smart TVs run on WebOS. It’s not the same as Android TV so you won’t find the same list of apps. We’ve tried to hit the major players on our list to show you how much LG Smart TVs can do. Even if you don’t see your favorite streaming service mentioned, there’s a good chance you’ll find it in LG’s Content Store.

Spotify (and other music services)

Price: Free / Premium service varies

We’ll tackle one of the easiest categories first — music. Plenty of people are turning to apps like Spotify and Pandora to blast their favorite songs, so why not add one to your TV? The LG Smart TV version of each app functions much like your mobile version, just blown up to fit the television. Right now, Spotify is by far the top-rated music service on LG’s Content Store, but Pandora is available as well, and each option packs an extensive library of songs to choose from. You can tap into Sirius XM as well if you prefer the feel of live radio.

Of course, you’ll have to spend a little cash if you want to escape from ads.

Movies Anywhere

Price: Free

There are too many video services to count, and it’s even worse when you have to switch between apps to access your favorite flicks. Movies Anywhere challenges that notion by bringing all of your downloads into one handy app. You’ll have to connect all of your accounts to this LG Smart TV app, but then you’ll be able to watch all of your favorites with ease. Movies Anywhere is similar to Plex, which is also available in LG’s Content Store. Best of all, Movies Anywhere is entirely free, and it can help you discover new deals on content from your other services.

YouTube TV

Price: 72.99 per month

Maybe you’re looking at your new LG Smart TV as a way to ditch your cable box entirely. If so, there are a few live TV apps to consider. Chief among them is YouTube TV, though Sling TV and Hulu TV are also available. YouTube TV might be the most expensive app on this list of LG Smart TV must-haves, but it offers over 85 channels and a few premium bundle options. No matter which live TV app you choose, it should provide a new, cost-effective way to beat back boredom.

Netflix (and other video services)

Price: Premium service varies

Your apps should reflect your personal needs, and video services are no exception. Just like with music services, you have the pick of the litter when it comes to LG Smart TVs. Thanks to Stranger Things and a laundry list of movies, Netflix is one of the most popular — and top-rated — apps right now. You can also turn to Hulu, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Apple TV, but each comes with its own subscription fees, so be careful.

Price: Free / Prime Gaming with your Prime membership

Gamers, rejoice! Twitch is another popular app on LG Smart TVs, though it’s not for everyone. If you’re not interested in streams or the NWSL, you may not find much need for Twitch, but your kids may want to try it out. You can tap into streams from your favorite creators, sort by different featured games, and more as you explore the app. Twitch has also introduced a feature that lets you enjoy content with family and friends even when you can’t be together. There aren’t really any alternatives to Twitch, unlike most other apps on this list.

Price: Free

At first glance, Plex looks like most other streaming services. It packs movies and shows of all genres, but there’s one big difference — Plex is free. It blends a mix of free content with the ability to log into your other streaming services to aggregate everything you have access to into one convenient menu. Plex even sprinkles in over 200 channels of live TV in case you want to feel like you still have access to cable.

Price: 5.99 / 7.99 per month

Even though Funimation is a video streaming service like the others, its dedication to animation deserves its own mention. Premium costs just 5.99 per month, and it’s an easy way to get rid of those pesky ads. The service offers over 36 pages of top anime shows, and you can control them all right from your LG Smart TV. You can also view ratings for each show before you dive in to make sure that you’re picking some of the best of the best anime around.

We will mention that in 2022, Funimation merged with another popular anime streaming service, Crunchyroll, and may be shut down completely in the near future. Unfortunately, Crunchyroll does not yet have an LG TV app in the store.

Price: Free trial / 6.99 per month

BritBox is another video service with a unique angle — this time dedicated to the glory of British television. This LG Smart TV app is a joint effort between the BBC and ITV, with a healthy dose of BritBox originals mixed in. It’s one of the easiest ways to enjoy Rowan Atkinson hits like Blackadder or keep up with weekly shows like Mock the Week. You can access BritBox in the United States, Canada, the UK, and more.

LG Channels

Price: Free

In a world where just about every streaming service costs 8 or more per month, LG Channels is a breath of fresh air. It’s an entirely free TV setup directly from LG, and it packs nearly 200 channels to choose from. There’s a channel for just about any genre — from horror to comedy, and plenty of news channels. You can also tap into niche favorites like a Just For Laughs channel and special content from Funny or Die. LG offers a free version of Channels Plus, which includes more content to choose from.

There are other apps in the LG Content Store that offer free ad-based streaming movies and shows, such as Pluto TV and Tubi.

3 stars: Hi. The app has been working for a long time. Until today. 30th April at 11am. It doesn’t pick my TV up anymore. What’s going on. I have the latest version of the LG TV app. a Huawei p30 lite and a LG Smart TV. PLEASE HELP 3 stars: App is bricked with Android 10. We expect more from LG. Android 10 beta has been out for several months. The company that makes Android phones should be able to fix their TV apps on latest version of Android 10, or so we think. Update: fixed, but can be much better 3 stars: LG TV plus is not detecting the TV anymore. Seems like this is a common issue for most of the LG TVs. Especially WebOS TVs. Please verify. 4 stars: Sometimes is a bit tricky to use the virtual pad to move the pointer around and the mobile content sharing doesn’t recognize some exotic video formats like rmvb. The rest works just fine. 5 stars: Works pretty much all the time and is useful because my TV from 2008 uses the same remote as my TV from 2019 and they change each other around which doesn’t help. 5 stars: Works A. Use It ALL the time, doesn’t require your phones personal info. Keep this app alive and you keep my business! 4 stars: Generally good. Had some weird issues with the TV turning on automatically when I wasn’t in the room. think it was due to the cast option in YouTube. I don’t think an app like YouTube should have ability to turn on the TV. Also had a few times when starting the app and TV not being found so couldn’t connect
