The screen resolution of all new models is crappy, for better or worse
The price of the XR is in no way budget. Why did they skimp on the screen?? Budget option here iPhone 7. And it’s price-performance-wise the best.

The iPhone XR has a thicker frame around the screen. 5.88 mm on each side. The iPhone XS has 4.25 mm, t.е. less by 1.55 mm. This makes the iPhone XR look a bit peculiar. No one else has such thick side bezels.
But the iPhone XR has a non-flickering IPS screen. And the iPhone XS, like its predecessor has an AMOLED screen from Samsung. Which flickers at low brightness. Personally I have this flicker causes visual stress and headaches, so now I avoid buying smartphones with OLED/AMOLED matrices. Only on the IPS.

@hexegg. I have both iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 at home. I personally measured with a ruler. The width of the frames is easy to measure knowing the ppi of the screen, the pixel resolution and the width of the smartphone. All the data is on Apple’s website. For example iPhone 7 has 326 ppi t.е. 326 pixels at 25.4 mm for a width of 67.1 mm and a resolution of 750 pixels in width we get 2.30 inches. a total screen width of 58.42 mm. Subtract 58.42mm of 67.1 mm of the body width and you get 8.68 mm. Divide by 2 (two sides) and the result is 4.34 mm is the thickness of the frame on the left or right. A ruler check of my iPhone 7 confirms the theoretical calculations.

@Alexid. I had this problem when I bought a Samsung Note (3 or something). We had to urgently change to an iPhone with IPS. With the Samsung Galaxy S8 this problem is not particularly observed, although the IPS screen is still more comfortable to look at.
