On my own
In order to get to the Home / Touch ID unit yourself, prepare the following tools: a pentalob 0.8 mm screwdriver, a 1.2 mm Phillips screwdriver, a hair dryer or a special thermal strap, a suction cup for removing a screen, tweezers, a flat (but not sharp) tool for opening the case and removing the connectors. At the end of the article, we posted with all the described actions for removing the part.
Step 1. Unscrew the bottom (end) pentalob screws on both sides of the charging connector.
Step 2. We heat the edge of the screen for one to two minutes to soften the special waterproof glue.
Step 3. Attach the suction cup to the screen just above the Home sensor, gently pry the case and pull with an even force without jerking. Use a flat tool to carefully walk around the perimeter of the display, separating it from the back cover. The parts of the case are connected by loops, do not tear them.
Step 4. Remove the four screws that secure the protective cover for the battery connector and the two display cables. Remove the cover and pull out the battery connector first, and then both display cables.
Step 5. Now turn off the touchscreen cable (at the top of the smartphone). To do this, unscrew the three screws of the hold-down plate and then disconnect the connector from the motherboard. Set the back of the lid aside.
Step 6. Remove the Home button cover strip (secured with four screws) and disconnect the right connector of the block by gently lifting it up.
Step 7. Heat the connector strap slightly to soften the adhesive that holds it to the front cover. Gently pick up the cable with a mediator, gradually detaching it from the body. Now you can pull out the button.
Features of the Home key on iPhone 7
Starting with the seventh iPhone model, smartphones began to install a new type of Home button. The mechanical key has given way to a touch simulation. The new key is a touch panel equipped with a fingerprint scanner and a special vibration mechanism that creates the illusion of a physical response.
Solutions to the problem
Unfortunately, it is impossible to completely replace the Home key with a new one (even the original one) while maintaining fingerprint recognition. Touch ID will not work. If done correctly, the key will only perform the navigation function of returning to the home screen. However, if the problem is contamination or oxidation of the contacts, then such cleaning is not difficult to do with your own hands. To do this, remove the button module.
The list of reasons for the failure of the key is standard and does not differ much from the list given for other malfunctions of Apple smartphones. The sensor block can be broken:
- The phone is severely bumped or dropped on a hard surface.
- Ingress of moisture into the case (leads to oxidation of the loop contacts).
- Pressing too hard on the sensor.
- Dirt and dust getting inside the case.
- Natural wear and tear of contacts from long use.

Reading time: 4 minutes
Using an iPhone with a broken Home button is uncomfortable, because many control functions are tied to it. Our article on what to do if you need to replace the home button on an iphone 7 and what are the possible consequences of the repair.
The Home control key is used in the iPhone for many purposes. These features include unlocking, scanning a fingerprint, returning to the home screen, launching the Siri voice assistant, enabling various modes (for example, Easy Access). No wonder that daily use can break it. Let’s figure out what to do in this situation, is it possible to replace the home button on an iphone 7, and how to do it yourself.
Contacting the service center
Due to the fact that the Home button is hardwired to the processor, replacing it completely will disable the Touch ID function. However, depending on the nature of the malfunction, you can try to fix the native key. It is impossible to replace a special membrane or restore a damaged sensor module cable without special tools. Therefore, we advise you to contact an Apple Licensed Service Center that offers the appropriate service. With the help of certified equipment, the master will conduct a full diagnosis, figure out the reasons for the breakdown and qualitatively restore the smartphone. An important plus is that all the work of such centers is provided with a long-term guarantee.

How to get iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus into DFU Mode and Recovery Mode
On iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the physical Home button has been replaced by a touch button with next-generation Taptic Engine technology.
The Taptic Engine now performs a vibration feedback from the device based on the actions you take and how you press the button. Due to this, the method used to put your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus into DFU mode and recovery mode is now different from previous models.
In this tutorial, we will show you how to enter DFU mode and recovery mode on new flagship iPhone models.
Putting iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus into Recovery Mode
- Turn off the iPhone 7 as usual by pressing the side button
- We are waiting for a while, for a complete shutdown
- Hold down the Volume Down button
- Then press and hold the Side button while continuing to hold the volume button.
- Keep holding until you see the recovery screen and iTunes icon.
If the iTunes icon appears, then the iPhone has entered recovery mode. Now you can open iTunes.
Although the new method requires a little more effort than older iPhones, it is still a matter of time and you will quickly get used to it. Write in the comments if you already had to transfer the device to DFU or Recovery Mode?
How to restore the home button flex cable with Touch ID
Personal data security, convenience in daily use, high-speed performance. All these characteristics are united by the Home button in iPhone 5S. 5 years have passed since the introduction of this legendary device, and with it Touch ID: the technology that gave the green light to the widespread use of fingerprint sensors in smartphones. This technology turned out to be so convenient and practical in everyday use that now even in unnamed Chinese state employees with a price of 100, a fingerprint scanner is the standard. In contrast to the PIN-code and pattern, the user gets a mechanism that makes it possible to more reliably protect personal information (the probability of a match is 1 in 64 billion), as well as to quickly and conveniently access it (the fingerprint reading speed is now measured in tenths of a second). With all of the above advantages, there are naturally also disadvantages. The reverse side of the coin, in the case of Apple devices, is the part associated with the repair and replacement of this technological miracle in unofficial service centers. It was the flat cable of the Home button with the fingerprint scanner in the iPhone 5s that became the first element in Apple products that is programmatically tied to the central processor. Each specific Touch ID scanner is tied to each specific processor. This means that simply replacing one scanner with another (even the most original of all the original ones) will give absolutely nothing. This is done, as usual with Apple, for our own safety and good. The fact is that the mathematical image of the fingerprint is stored only in the so-called Secure Enclave (a special area of the central processor), to which only the Touch ID scanner has access. over, Apple claims that users’ fingerprint images are not downloaded from the phone, are not stored on the company’s servers, and in general, supposedly, no one except the user has access to this data.
LET’S GO TO REPAIR:
As you know, elements exposed to mechanical stress sooner or later fail. The fingerprint scanner in iPhones of different generations is no exception. There are three main reasons for a Touch ID scanner failure:
In the first case, repair or replacement of the motherboard is necessary, in the second case, an unconditional replacement of the cable is necessary, in the third case, you can try to restore the native cable, thus preserving the functionality of Touch ID. However, we hasten to upset you: this method requires a certain level of straightness of hands, perseverance, concentration, as well as a lot of free time and a lot of things that are in short supply in our hectic age.
So, first of all, we will examine the train for damage.
Next, we unsolder the lower metal plate and cut off the damaged section of the loop with a scalpel
With a sharp scalpel, gradually clean off the insulation coating of the loop. At this stage, you should exercise the utmost care and caution, because conductive tracks are not highly durable. Rather, on the contrary, they tend to break. After removing the insulating coating, apply flux and tin the tracks.
In the next step, we need one more button (not necessarily workable), which will act as a donor for the loop. We cut off the intact train from it, leave a small tolerance in length. For greater convenience, we fix the donor loop on a piece of double-sided tape and clean off the insulating coating. As in the case of the button, we adhere to the utmost care, so as not to do everything all over again.
We apply flux, tinker the conductors, cut off the excess as smoothly as possible. Our donor is ready for transplant
We take out the tambourine, start dancing. We position the trains as evenly as nerves, hands and the laws of physics allow. Apply flux and solder stubs.
With trembling hands, we toss the button on the device, test it. Touch ID drum roll is functioning. With the cries of It’s alive we remove the button. In order to avoid the repeated death of the button, we glue a patch on the junction from a piece of a loop of the appropriate size.
We mount it in place and solder the bottom plate, after which we additionally fix it with a drop of glue.
Putting the device together, testing the Touch ID. We can conclude that this method of restoring the functionality of Touch ID will not help you earn mountains of gold, and in general is not particularly digestible in conditions of conveyor repairs. During the time spent on such repairs, it is quite possible to perform several modular repairs and remain in a greater plus. However, what if not the qualifications of the foreman and the level of complexity of the work performed by him ultimately affect his earnings? As usual, we hope that we were able to provide interesting information that will be useful to our clients.

New features of the Home touch button
Perfect things are perfect in the little things, especially at Apple. The iPhone 7, a novelty in 2016, pleasantly delighted its fans not only at first sight. First of all, it concerns the improved home button, it has become touch-sensitive. On a monolithic display, it has the same location (under the screen), visually retaining the familiar ring. The home key (Force Touch ID) simulates the responsiveness of a light vibration and audible click, creating the illusion of being pressed. This is done by a connected vibration motor (Tapic Engine), originally used by the developers in the Apple Watch.
In addition to the well-known and all used functions in previous models, there are new features:
- It easily recognizes the force of pressing (the user, depending on his preferences, can set easy, medium or coarse mode)
- Home does not click, but plausibly simulates a click. You can quickly determine if your smartphone is on or not. When the phone is turned off, the usual vibration will not occur when the key is pressed, while when the button is turned on, it will vibrate;
- Hom is no longer used when the smartphone is forced to restart (the power button and the volume down rocker are pressed simultaneously);
- It cannot be operated with a fingernail or a gloved finger, the sensor only responds to the touch of the skin of the finger (static charge of the human body is recognized).
Useful and unknown features of the home button
With the updated operating system to iOs 9 and higher, new key capabilities appear. First of all, we are talking about the Easy Access feature, which has become relevant for the iPhone 7 due to the enlargement of the screen. The initial idea of using the phone with one finger is impossible at this size. Double-tapping the home key will move the home screen down for a few seconds and easily open even the most remote icon.
Some functions in a smartphone require double or triple presses of the home button. By default, these clicks must be performed as quickly as possible, which is not convenient for all users. Depending on the age, the rhythm of life and the simple everyday needs of people, the designers of Apple have put three pressing speeds in the phone’s memory: fast, slow and very slow. Now every user will be satisfied by customizing the smartphone for himself.
The smartphone also provides the ability to assign any of the actions offered in the menu to triple pressing of the home button. This is especially convenient for people with disabilities. This allows them to call the required function as quickly as possible without moving through many menu items, but by pressing one button.
Clearing RAM is a simple but little-known feature in iPhone (especially true for the upgraded iPhone seven). This function allows you to significantly speed up the work and increase the performance of the smartphone, because the phone’s memory gets clogged over time and significantly slows down the gadget. In order to carry out this operation, you must hold the on / off button until the Disable appears on the screen. Without releasing it, hold down the home button for 10 seconds, and you will automatically go to the desktop. If you have switched the system is cleaned and ready to go!
Another important feature is the ability to disable Siri. Often a user (especially a beginner) activates the voice assistant by mistake by taking a screenshot, using the Easy Access mode, or others. It takes a lot of time and effort to close it. In order to completely close this function, you need to go to the Siri section in the settings menu and deactivate it with the switch to the gray position.
The Print Screen function familiar to users of modern smartphones (screenshot) has not only been preserved, but has also been supplemented with new features. At first, not all users manage to get used to simultaneously pressing the power and home keys to get a screenshot. For the convenience of users, the developers put it in the Accessibility menu of the Assistive Touch application. After activating it, a small gray dot appears on the screen, clicking on which a picture is taken. The pictures you take are stored in the Photos app. Screenshots.
Another additional, but not insignificant, improvement was the refinement of the fingerprint reading function when unlocking the smartphone. The system scans more thoroughly, which makes it very problematic to unlock it. For a thief or a lucky one who accidentally finds him, only an experienced hacker can cope with this task.
Home button advantages and disadvantages
Like any technological innovation, the home button has advantages and disadvantages. A big plus is the reduced risk of breaking the button at times, this is due to the change from the mechanical version to the touch one. The same cannot be said for previous models, as the iPhone 7 has the most used home button. The second big plus is the pressure control. This allows any user, including people with disabilities, to customize the smartphone for themselves.
The disadvantages of the home button include its interaction exclusively with the skin of the fingers without gloves and other barriers between the finger and the sensor. This is extremely inconvenient for people living in the northern regions. Also, its response, which does not always work adequately at the beginning of using the gadget (not the pressure force that causes the Siri voice assistant).
In case, for some reason, the “home” button does not work or the system freezes, then you can use one of two options for reviving it:
- If the smartphone is frozen, you need to restart it, otherwise the “home” button will not be activated;
- If time is short, and you need to reanimate quickly, then you need to go to the multitasking menu. To do this, you need to forcefully press and stretch the left side of the screen. Home health can be easily restored in the Settings section by activating Assistive Touch.
Apple hasn’t just refined the home key, it has done so with all its capabilities (both physical and functional) in mind. Thus, they provided a simple user with the opportunity to enjoy the convenience and comfort of its use. The smartphone has easily adjusted to the dynamic rhythm of modern life, and fully meets the most versatile needs of all categories of people.
