Xiaomi Mi TV 4S 43 “Russian Edition: viewing and setting up terrestrial and Internet channels

Xiaomi Mi TV 4S 43 finally, it’s time to customize it, or rather one of its main functions. watching television channels. But even here it was not without pleasant surprises, since Mi TV is a smart thing and designed for convenient and comfortable use.!

image, setting, xiaomi

So, first things first. The entire line of Xiaomi Mi TV, officially presented on the Russian market, has a built-in tuner that supports the two most popular broadcasting standards: DVB-T2 (terrestrial) and DVB-C (cable). This means that to watch your favorite channels (digital and analog), you just need to plug into the tuner the cable coming from your antenna or from your cable TV provider, make settings and enjoy watching. In the case of cable TV, you may need a CAM module with a decoding card that plugs into the CI slot on the back of the TV (CI version). At my disposal was only an ordinary outdoor antenna for receiving digital (DVB-T2) and analog broadcasting.

TV channel control and navigation system.

If the number of channels in your list is so large that it will take a long time to flip through them in the way above, then you can use the second, more suitable method for this. To do this, simply click on the right arrow of the same ring-shaped joystick to bring up the on-screen keyboard, on which you can dial the channel number you need:

volume control is carried out by pressing the rocker-shaped button with icons and. at the bottom of the remote control. The MUTE function has not yet been implemented, but they promise to add it in one of the next updates, by programming one of the buttons on the remote.

Internet broadcasting or forget about antennas and extra wires! There are situations when you simply do not have an antenna cable or the antenna itself at home, or it is not on a particular wall, on which you decided to hang the TV after renovation, and you simply cannot live without your favorite TV channels. And in this case, Xiaomi took care of its potential customers by implementing the ability to watch television over the Internet. Those inside the proprietary PatchWall shell already have a separate tab, which is called that. TV Channels, where a huge number of channels are collected that can be watched, either for free (a standard set of familiar channels) or paid (by subscription), and all this splendor in good quality will become available to you immediately after connecting your Smart TV to the Internet.

This scenario has a number of significant advantages: you don’t need extra wires;. you don’t need to buy any additional set-top boxes and satellite dishes;. you don’t need to pay separately for cable TV, because you get access to channels via the Internet;. you need only one remote control to work, and the functionality and quality that you will get much more thought-out (quality and quantity of content, the possibility of deferred viewing.)

All this, it seems to me, is the main ideology of Xiaomi. give your client the maximum amount of convenience and functionality for a moderate price tag. That’s all, thank you all for your attention and respect to those who got to these words.!

Delivery set and appearance

The TV comes in a huge box, which, in addition to the device itself, contains two stands, screws, a remote control and a user manual.

To install the TV on a horizontal surface, you need to fasten the stands with the complete screws. they are metal, quite strong and can easily withstand the relatively low weight of the device (12.45 kg). True, if you make a little effort, then the TV sways slightly back and forth on its legs. The thickness of the stands is 26.4 cm, and the distance between them is 98 cm, so you need a large cabinet or a table with a length of at least 113 mm. The TV can also be wall-hung using the VESA bracket 300x300mm.

The appearance of the Mi TV 4S is definitely strict. This is facilitated by the black color scheme and the dark metal frame of the screen. By the way, the frame is relatively thin. 7 mm. In the middle of the bottom panel there is only the manufacturer’s logo and a status indicator, and the only power button is hidden at the bottom. On the rear panel, made of plastic, in two separate niches are located: three HDMI inputs (one with support for the ARC protocol), a connector for cable and terrestrial antennas, a composite input, a slot for a CI module, an optical output, an Ethernet port, three USB ports 2.0 and mini jack for headphone connection. The distance between the interfaces is sufficient so that you can connect several wires at once or, say, external drives without obstacles, the main thing is not to use flash drives with a thick case.

According to the information on a sticker on the back of the case, the TV was assembled in Kaliningrad. We did not find any obvious defects in the assembly, the only thing is that the plastic back panel bends when pressed.

The remote is compact, lightweight (60 g), powered by a pair of AA batteries. Fingerprints do not remain on the matte plastic case, however, over time, slightly noticeable abrasions appear from active use. There are a minimum of buttons on the remote control: turning on, activating voice input, a four-position navigation ring with a central selection button, back button, volume control, calling the main Android TV screen and the proprietary PatchWall shell. The remote transmits control signals via Bluetooth, so you don’t need to aim at the TV itself. Among the shortcomings, we note the too loud navigation ring and a slightly fidgeting center key.

Testing

To get started, the TV needs to be powered from the AC mains and brought to the Internet, if necessary, update the firmware. We used firmware version 1508.

From a cold state, the TV turns on in approximately 45 seconds. It takes the same amount of time to restart. The screen is activated in 2 seconds. These actions are selected by long pressing the power button on the remote control.

Despite the fact that the declared resolution is 4K, the real resolution of the PatchWall interface and Android TV is lower. approximately equal to Full HD. On first acquaintance, this is somewhat disappointing. The detail of the posters of films and series displayed in the selections is also low. On the other hand, if you watch content from the recommended distance for a 4K TV, then these features do not hurt the eyes. Background color changes in PatchWall. it is smooth and not annoying.

In the test, we used reference images from Burosch. Format, Brightness, Contrast, Color and Focus were all correct. A positive result was also in the test for displaying single-pixel lines.

In the “Default” picture mode, the brightness is low, however, even in bright ambient light it does not interfere with comfortable viewing of video content. Contrast is generally acceptable. Wide viewing angles were confirmed. At an angle, the color rendition barely changes, which is typical for the matrix used. The rest of the picture modes are different color temperature settings and subjectively give the worst result. the picture looks less natural. With medium and strong noise reduction, characteristic trails remain behind moving objects on the screen, disabling the function allows you to reduce this visually unpleasant effect. The black color is deep enough for a matrix of this class. Backlight uniform.

The TV is capable of receiving a signal using the Miracast standard; for this, the smartphone / tablet and the TV must be in the same Wi-Fi network. Wireless transmission works, but sometimes video lags behind sound.

We did not have the opportunity to connect to cable and terrestrial TV, so we used applications for online cinemas and pay TV services. The video stream is transmitted smoothly over the network, it does not suffer from excessively frequent buffering. YouTube plays videos in 4K, including 60fps.

Video in 4K format is played smoothly from external drives, but for some files it is advisable to use a third-party program, for example MX Player or VLC Player, since the standard player is not entirely universal and has basic functions. But for decoding high-bitrate 4K video (250 Mbps), the hardware power is no longer enough. I would like to note that the potential of the TV is fully revealed when watching ultra-high definition content.

The content from the network media player connected via HDMI was displayed on the TV normally, we did not notice the desynchronization between the picture and sound.

External devices. a wired mouse with a keyboard, as well as Bluetooth headphones. were connected and functioned correctly.

The built-in speakers are located under the cabinet and are directed downward. Diffusers are protected by plastic grilles. To create a stereo effect, the speakers are spaced a sufficient distance from each other. The total power is 20 W (2 × 10 W), a phase inverter is used. An obvious plus of the built-in speakers is a large volume reserve, if you wish, you can listen to music, as they say, together with your neighbors. An obvious disadvantage is that sound distortions begin already at 40% of the maximum volume. Uncompressed audio formats sound nice. In general, for a TV of this class, the sound quality is good.

Hardware filling

The TV is based on a quad-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor, a Mali-470 graphics accelerator, 2 GB of DDR RAM and 8 GB of eMMC permanent memory. As a software platform, as for all smart TVs Mi TV, Android acts with a license for Google TV services (on the core of the ninth version).

In addition to the local network port, there are built-in modules Bluetooth 4.2 and dual-band Wi-Fi 5. The possibility of hardware video decoding using H.265 / HEVC, support for Dolby Audio and DTS-HD standards is declared. According to AIDA64 utility, H.264 (AVC) and VP9 standards, AAC format, FLAC codec, OGG container are also supported.

Interface and software

The TV uses two software shells: the standard Android TV and the proprietary PatchWall from Xiaomi. The main page of the PatchWall consists of horizontal ribbons that can be navigated using the up-down and left-right keys. The localized version of PatchWall offers a selection of content specifically for the Russian viewer. There are several sections that do not require explanation: “Films”, “Series”, “Children”, “TV Channels”, “TV Shows”. Libraries of online cinemas are connected, there is content of pay TV services, TV channels can be watched live and in the archive. The buyer of the Mi TV 4S TV is offered a free 6-month subscription to ivi, Megogo, Okko, Tvzavr, 24chasaTV, Kinopoisk and MegaFon TV video services. A discount subscription can be activated separately for each service, but no later than December 31, 2019. There are thematic selections of films, serials and TV programs. The default mode can be set to “Child” or “For adults”. In the first case, the appearance and content feeds will be focused on a family audience, in the second. on an adult viewer. From the main page of PatchWall, you can select a video input source, a theme (dark or light), call up a list of all installed applications. PatchWall does not allow you to sort, add or remove content feeds.

КАК ПРОКАЧАТЬ XIAOMI MI TV 4S?

The Android TV shell, on the other hand, allows you to customize channels. you can move, add and delete them. In it, you can also add applications to your favorites list, move them. The preinstalled “Player” is designed to play media content. videos, photos, music. “TV Manager” allows you to monitor the state of the system, optimize its operation, uninstall applications and install them from an external storage using APK packages.

Otherwise, the capabilities of the shells are the same.

Display and picture settings

Mi TV 4S uses a panel with homeotropic orientation of liquid crystals, i.e. VA type. The main characteristics are shown in the table. The declared viewing angles are 178 °, the brightness is 220 cd / m² and compliance with the HDR10 standard. It uses a Direct LED backlight and an 8-bit matrix with interframe control (Frame Rate Control), which receives intermediate color tones due to the frame interleaving of the primary colors. The screen coating is glossy.

Through the Android menu, you can select a picture mode (Default, Vivid, Sports, Movie, Custom), adjust the backlight intensity, select a color temperature (Cool, Default, Warm “), Adjust the aspect ratio (” Automatic “,” 4: 3 “,” 14: 9 “,” 16: 9 “,” Full screen “,” Scaling “). In advanced video settings, you can adjust noise reduction (Off, Weak, Medium, Strong), adaptive backlight (Off, On), and local contrast (Off, On). Of the features, we note the presence of two brightness parameters. Firstly, this is done in the menu in any mode by adjusting the backlight intensity, and secondly, in the custom setting mode.

The audio settings are as follows: enable / disable system sounds, audio mode (“Default”, “Movie”, “News”, “Games”, “Custom”). The sound is output through the built-in speakers (their power is indicated in the table), to wired and wireless headphones, or to an external speaker system through the optical S / PDIF output.

Mi TV 4S TV Review: Ultra HD for Beginners

Mi TV 4S is a solid budget TV, with a high-quality picture for this class, good speakers and a fast interface. If you are choosing your first Smart TV for watching ultra-high definition content, then this is a really tempting and profitable purchase, because the recommended by the manufacturer

Screen, matrix quality

This model Xiaomi Mi TV 4S has a 55-inch diagonal, a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. I will not indicate all the characteristics, you can read them in the review.

The maximum brightness of white here is about 270 cd / m2, the minimum is about 10 cd / m2.

The PWM value was measured using the Radex Lupin device. So: At 100% brightness the PWM is about 1%, at 90% brightness the PWM is 20%, at 80% brightness the PWM is 40%. The maximum PWM level is around 77% at 0% brightness.

Have I noticed PWM on this TV? likely no than yes. But he noted that the first week with this TV, my eyes were very tired. Perhaps due to the fact that the brightness level was chosen in the region of 70%. Now I am using 100%.

As far as I understand, the 55-inch Xiaomi Mi TV 4S uses a VA screen matrix. The viewing angles are small. How does it manifest? If you look at the display at an angle greater than 10 degrees, the image loses its saturation. This is especially noticeable in red.

However, at a right angle, everything is just fine: the picture is rich, bright and pleasant. Any image looks very rich and colorful. Turning on my LG TV, I realized that it just had an awful color reproduction. I had a similar impression when I installed a new LOC with an IPS matrix next to the old BenQ monitor with a TN matrix. As they say, heaven and earth.

For a whole month I was looking at the PatchWall screen and only now I read in the reviews that FullHD resolution is used there. I was very surprised, since until now I was confident in 4K. Came closer. really, loose letters and an image.

The distance from which you consume the content is important here. In my case, the TV stood at a distance of two meters from the eyes. At this distance, many details are already barely distinguishable. Especially when there is no direct comparison. FullHD and 4K in one image.

Therefore, color rendition is more important: how the picture looks as a whole. And here with this complete order.

For myself, I noted the following: 4K-picture is important, but not in the first place when watching video. Content (FHD / 4K) on a 55-inch diagonal at 2 meters is perceived equally well. Therefore, when watching films and TV series, I still preferred FulHD.

The display surface is semi-matt. With glare and reflection on the screen of Mi TV 4S, everything is fine: the spotlights in the room are almost invisible, the light from the window does not interfere with viewing. But movies and TV shows with dark scenes are best left for the evening.

As for HDR, Vladimir described a lot in his review, and I was even more convinced that the HDR technology on this TV is weak.

On the other hand, last year I was at the presentation of a huge, very expensive 8K TV with all possible technologies, and even on such an innovative TV, I did not really notice HDR. Of course, when you are shown beautiful HDR ON / HDR OFF demos on the same screen, there is a difference. However, in regular movies, where HDR is on by default, all of this is nullified. At least on Mi TV 4S.

A couple of words about updates. For a month of use, there were about four of them. Chinese fix information. But the recurring words in English. Bugs. were understandable 🙂 Frankly speaking, all the firmware did not introduce anything new, and the bugs were not fixed.

Remote Control

It seems to be such a trifle, but I took the control panel to a separate point. From the point of view of functions, there are no complaints about it: there are enough buttons, nothing superfluous. But the sounds that he makes when pressing the buttons are something!

The round navigation button clicks so loudly that you can hear it from another room even when the TV is running at medium volume. And when silence falls in the evening, my gatherings near the TV turn into “trills” of the control panel. In addition, the center OK button also emits a rattling sound.

In short, if during the day the clatter and clatter of the remote control are leveled by the sounds of a neighbor’s puncher, then at night the remote control reveals its abilities in all its glory 🙂

Considering that I got the TV already slightly second-hand, the remote control turned out to be in excellent condition. Most likely, Vladimir Nimin carefully kept the device in a bag.

The remote has a voice assistant button. It doesn’t work: the function is triggered in 6 cases out of 10. It is not very clear what this is connected with. Nothing happens when pressed.

Introduction

Last summer, Xiaomi held a large-scale presentation of its devices in Russia. Shown the Mi 9T smartphone, Mi Band bracelet, Mi True Wireless headphones and a series of Mi TVs. You can read more about the presentation and the products themselves at the link below.

Since today’s material is about TV, I will allow myself to quote Vladimir Fokin:

“And now about the main news that was announced at the presentation of the company, Xiaomi Mi TVs will be on sale in Russia since June 25. The manufacturer has completely localized all the menus and has agreed with domestic video services to integrate them into their devices. This is what the list of partner services looks like on Xiaomi TVs: ivi, Okko, KinoPoisk, MeGoGo, 24 hours TV, TVZavr, MegaFon TV, Rutube, CTC, Amediateka, SPB TV, Neverthink and Red Bull TV.

Three models of Xiaomi TVs with different diagonals and delicious Mi TV 4S 43 ”will be presented in Russia. 22,990 rubles and Mi TV 4S 55 ”. 33 990 rubles “.

A year has passed, but for Xiaomi TVs have not dropped. Although, in fairness, it should be noted that from time to time they “rolled out” discounts of 3,000. 5,000 rubles. For example, a 55-inch Mi TV could be taken for about 28,000 rubles.

For those who want to read the review, and not the experience of using the 4S TV (55 inches), please take a look at the link below.

When I asked Xiaomi for a 4K TV, I took into account a few main points of interest to me. And here it is worth noting that these points have a common parameter. an affordable price. So:

  • How 4K TV behaves
  • How 4K console games behave
  • How big is the difference in movies and games between 4K and FullHD
  • Is the HDR effect noticeable

The 55-inch Mi TV 4S lasted for about a month. During this time, I got quite a lot of experience in using. Therefore, I can tell you about all the intricacies of working with TV in the usual home conditions of self-isolation. Those who like to receive information from YouTube can watch a long but detailed video recorded the other day.

Design, dimensions, ease of location

In terms of appearance, the Xiaomi TV is nothing original. However, modern TVs, probably, like smartphones, are similar to each other due to the tendency to reduce the bezels of the screens. Therefore, you have a huge display with bezels on the top, right and left of less than 10 mm, and below. less than 20 mm. Most importantly, there are no “flashy” skins, logos or stickers like “4K Super Ultra HDR Google Premium” here. At the very bottom, on the edge of the case, only the volumetric Mi is visible.

The TV frame is made of metal, as well as a part of the back side. There is also plastic. the central and lower parts. Under the video about the experience of use, they asked a question about heating during operation. It is almost absent: the screen itself is slightly warm, and the back cover is at room temperature. Therefore, such a large TV will not act as a heater.

Vladimir Nimin in his review talked about adventures with legs for this TV: they say, I had to look for a screwdriver in the car, since it was not in the house. Everything was fine with me, so I put the massive legs in place quickly enough.

Of course, I was also embarrassed by a similar installation of the TV on a horizontal surface: the TV is wide, heavy, and the legs are short. Nevertheless, TV stands rooted to the spot.

Since my child of four is constantly in a room with Mi TV 4S, I checked all possible rollover options. The only thing you can think of is to hang on the top frame. In this case, of course, the TV set will crash to the floor.

Accommodation is another issue. In my case, an old 47-inch LG TV was squeezed into a niche between two cabinets. But Xiaomi Mi TV 4S 55 inches did not fit there. I had to put forward the curbstone and only then place the TV. If you are interested, the width of this model is 1230 mm, and the opening between the cabinets is 1210 mm. That is, quite a bit was not enough. You cannot move the cabinets away, since they are also fastened together by a shelf.

So if I decide to buy a TV with a similar or larger diagonal, then something will have to be done with cabinets that are almost firmly installed against the wall. In general, pay attention to the dimensions of the future TV and calculate the place of its installation.

The next point is the length of the power cable. Its length is only 150 cm. And here I was again unlucky: the socket is located to the upper left of the TV behind the cabinet, and the cable runs from the lower right corner of the TV. As a result, the network cable did not reach the outlet. Had to use an extension cord.

After connecting the power supply, the TV from Xiaomi shows no signs of life. That is, in standby mode, the operation indicator does not light up. Well, from some side it is even good: for example, if the TV is installed in the bedroom, then during sleep, any light indication of the TV can be annoying. As soon as you turn on the device using the remote control, the LED below lights up in red. Brightness is low.

Another important point is the location of the connectors. They are all on the back center. Some “look” to the left, others. down. From the top of the TV to the nearest connector is about 40 cm, and to the farthest one. about 55 cm. I mean, reaching the slots you need is not easy enough. At least without tipping the TV, connecting the cable is still a hassle. And if it hangs on the wall, then the task becomes overwhelming.

Probably, in the case of such large devices, the block with connectors should be taken out separately. But here is the question of the price: for 30,000 rubles, my “Wishlist” is too big.

Experience of using Xiaomi Mi TV 4S at 55 inches

Xbox One X connection

I have already told the story of how I bought the console and was satisfied. You can read the material below the link.

After gaining experience on TV from Xiaomi, it was interesting to know how things are with games in 4K resolution. By the way, it turned out that not all HDMI connectors on Mi TV 4S transmit sound (1 and 2 connectors without sound).

Then came the epic thinking about why the set-top box does not “give” 4K to TV. Before I figured out the problem, they began to write to me on the Web about the lousy quality of the complete HDMI cable, about fake 4K on Xiaomi, and so on.

It turned out that first you need to select a special mode of HDMI 2.0. “Enhanced HDMI”:

“Optimizes picture quality for HDMI UHD connection. Supports HDMI 2.0, accepting UHD signal (50p / 60p 4: 4: 4 and 4: 2: 2) “.

Then, on the console, select the 4K UHD resolution in the settings. If the first condition is not met, then the prefix will write about the error and return back to 1080p.

It should also be understood that not all games on the Xbox One X are in high definition. Nevertheless, the list is impressive and can be viewed at this link. Note that HDR is not available everywhere either.

The funny thing is that the new Doom Eternal, judging by the description, does not support 4K, but is output with HDR. But the old Doom 3 shows 4K, but without HDR.

Actually, that’s why I appreciated all the charms of graphics on Red Dead Redemption 2. Here you have both 4K and HDR support in all its charms. You can also watch Forza Horizon 4.

The first RDR 2 game on the Xiaomi Mi 4S TV looks stunning. The image is clear, crisp, the detail is excellent. You can see the HDR mode working in moments when the sun’s rays shimmer on the white snow without bleaching the texture. Information is saved in shadows and highlights. Surely it would look even cooler on an OLED display.

Everything is impressive in Forza Horizon 4: the elaboration of details on car models, high-quality texture of the ground, asphalt and soil, a storm of colors, wildlife and much more. However, Microsoft created both the console and the game. one hundred percent compatibility.

Doom 3 is interesting for its constant movement. But there you notice less details and play of light.

You need to try other games, there is simply no time to scrupulously study all the nuances.

  • Xiaomi TVs: the difference between the global version and the Chinese

The manufacturer Xiaomi produces products not only for the whole world, but also for the domestic consumer in China. Televisions that go on sale in many countries are different from those sold strictly in the Chinese market. Let’s figure out how to distinguish a TV made for the Russian market from the Chinese.

    • Appearance

The TV is shipped in a regular box, inside it is protected by foam. On one side, the box lists all the features: 4K Ultra HD Android TV, HDR, Chromecast built-in, and so on. In the official version, there are no inscriptions on the box in Chinese. The TV model is written with the letter ending RU.

You can check the TV for authenticity through the official resource “Product Authentication”, where you need to enter the serial number of the device, and with the global version you will receive the following answer:

In the Chinese version, when you turn on the TV for the first time, you need to spend several hours to configure the system, disable Chinese and connect English-language services (there is no Russian language). Such difficulties will not arise when buying a version for the Russian market, which, of course, supports Russian out of the box.

The remote control is connected in the English-language menu, further configuration takes place in the Russian-language menu. “Quick setup” from Google means easy voice setup in Russian via your smartphone.

In Chinese versions of Xiaomi TVs, Russian frequencies do not work, but only Chinese frequencies in the DTMB broadcasting system. This means that you will not be able to connect a conventional analog antenna or cable TV to them, at best the image will be black and white. Also, Russian digital TV frequencies are not supported. Therefore, due to this drawback, it is necessary to buy an additional external T2 tuner.

The Russian version has a built-in digital tuner that supports the two most popular broadcasting standards: DVB-T2 (terrestrial) and DVB-C (cable). This means that to watch your favorite channels (digital and analog), you just need to insert a cable from your antenna or cable TV provider into the tuner, make settings and enjoy watching.

    • Remote control with voice search and commands

Both the international version and the Chinese TV have voice commands that really help out and compensate for the absence of the “Menu” button on the Mi TV remote. However, in the Chinese version, voice control is either in Chinese or in English. In this case, TV remotes look the same:

    • IMPORTANT. There are models of the Chinese version of TVs on the market, flashed with Russian firmware. But this does not negate all the disadvantages listed above, namely: the lack of a digital tuner, the lack of voice search, the lack of complete Russification, and, of course, an official guarantee. We do not recommend such TV models for purchase.
