HP announced three new and refreshed mobile workstations based on Intel’s “Alder Lake” processor silicon. The top model, the ZBook Fury 16 G9, uses Intel’s new HX-class 55-watt chips, and all offer Nvidia or AMD graphics silicon.

HP ZBook Fury 16 G9

The flagship model, the ZBook Fury 16 G9 replaces – or rather, merges – the previous 15.6 and 17.3-inch ZBook Fury models. This laptop is one of the first to feature Intel’s recently announced 55-watt HX-class processors, which are more powerful than the 45-watt H-class chips normally found in notebooks like this. The HX-class chips are part of Intel’s 12th generation Core line otherwise known as Alder Lake. (See our Core i9-12900K review for an in-depth look at the architecture.) ECC memory is available with select processors.

Another major change since the previous ZBook Fury model (see our ZBook Fury 17 G8 review) is the switch to a taller, more productive 16:10 aspect ratio screen with up to a 3840×2400 resolution. An HP DreamColor professional display supporting 100% DCI-P3 color is optional. A 120Hz 3840×2400 screen (non-DreamColor) is also offered.

Other highlights for this laptop include up to 16TB of NVMe storage (four M.2 PCIe Gen4 drives), 128GB of DDR5-4800 memory (four SODIMM slots), Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, and top-shelf Nvidia RTX or AMD Radeon RX graphics cards. (Specific models of the latter haven’t been announced.) HP is also upping the ante with a customizable per-key RGB backlit keyboard and a 5MP IR webcam.

The ZBook Fury 16 G9’s expected availability is June; pricing hasn’t been announced. Its basic specifications are as follows:

Operating Systems Windows 11, Ubuntu 20.04, FreeDos 3.0
Processor Family 12 th Generation Intel Core i5, i7, i9; HX-class (55-watt)
Chipset Intel WM690
Maximum Memory 128GB DDR5-4800 (ECC or non-ECC)

Display Size 15.6” (1920×1080 or 3840×2160), 16” (1920×1200 or 3840×2400); DreamColor available
Available Graphics Nvidia RTX or AMD Radeon RX (models TBA)
Battery 8-cell 95Wh li-polymer
Dimensions 14.3 by 9.9 by 1.14 inches (with WWAN)
Weight Starting at 5.4 pounds (non-touch)

HP ZBook Studio 16 G9

Thin and light yet powerful, the ZBook Studio 16 G9 (see our review of the previous model, the ZBook Studio G8) offers Intel H-class Alder Lake processors, up to 64GB of DDR5-4800 memory, 8TB of NVMe storage (two PCIe Gen4 drives), and Nvidia graphics up to the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti or professional-grade RTX A5500.

HP is emphasizing enhanced cooling with this generation, of which the ZBook Studio 16 G9 will need a lot since it’s only 0.71 inches thin. It now has curved metal fan blades and uses vapor chamber heatsinks. It also features a customizable per-key RGB backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 6E, and Thunderbolt 4, and an available HP DreamColor or OLED screen, which is now 16″ and 16:10 aspect ratio.

The ZBook Studio 16 G9’s availability is expected in June via HP.com; pricing hasn’t been announced. See below for basic specifications.

HP ZBook Fury G9 and HP ZBook Studio G9 launch

HP has launched two new 16-inch ZBook mobile workstations, the HP ZBook Fury G9 and HP ZBook Studio G9, along with a 280W Thunderbolt Dock that can ‘fully charge any laptop or mobile workstation’.

launches, zbook, workstation, laptops

HP ZBook Fury G9

The ZBook Fury G9 is powered by the new 12th Gen Intel Core HX-Series processors. With up to 8 P-cores and 8 E-cores, these ‘Alder Lake’ chips should offer a significant performance boost in multithreaded workflows, especially ray trace rendering, when compared to mobile workstations with 11th Gen Intel Core processors.

Graphics options include the Nvidia RTX A5500 with a max Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 145W, and AMD Radeon Pro GPUs, although HP has not detailed which ones.

The machine supports up to 128 GB of DDR5 memory across 4 DIMMs and up to 16 TB of NVMe storage across four M.2 SSDs.

There are no Hard Disk Drive (HDD) options, a first for an HP ZBook of this class.

With a new 16-inch form factor, the HP ZBook Fury G9 comes with a choice of 16:10 aspect ratio displays, up to the 120Hz 4K DreamColor model for colour-critical workflows.

Lighting on the full sized keyboard with numeric keypad can also be customised, with RGB per-key LED backlighting. This isn’t just for gamers, says HP, with the Z Light Space software allowing users to create custom configs for specific apps to highlight keyboard hotkeys and shortcuts.

HP has also concentrated on improving the experience of video conferencing. With HP Auto Frame, the 5-megapixel IR camera and audio will automatically follow the presenter (or multiple presenters) as they move within the camera’s frame.

DNN Noise Suppression will also suppress background noise for ‘crisp, clear calls.’

The HP ZBook Fury G9 measures 363 x 251 x 2.78mm and starts at 2.44 kg.

It is expected to be available in June with yet to be announced.

HP ZBook Studio G9

The ZBook Studio G9 is significantly slimmer and lighter than the ZBook Fury G9, so offers the slightly less powerful 12th Gen Intel Core H-Series processors with up to 6 P-cores and 8 E-cores.

launches, zbook, workstation, laptops

It offers similar graphics options up to the Nvidia RTX A5000, with a max Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 110W. Meanwhile, HP Vaporforce Thermals feature new curved metal blades to help keep the machine running cool and operating at peak processing power.

With up to 64 GB of DDR5 memory, spread across 2 DIMMs, the HP ZBook Studio G9 offers less memory than the HP ZBook Fury G9. However, this is still a big improvement over the HP ZBook Studio G8 with 32 GB, which some customers found limiting. Other specs include up to 4 TB of NVMe M.2 storage. It also comes with RGB per-key LED backlighting but has a lower res 720p IR camera.

The HP ZBook Studio G9 measures 356 x 242 x 180mm and starts at 1.73 kg.

It is expected to be available in June with yet to be announced.

HP Thunderbolt G4 Dock

The HP Thunderbolt G4 Dock offers up to 280W of power, the ability to fully charge any laptop or mobile workstation with Thunderbolt 4 technology, and double the ethernet speed than previous generations. There is also a 120W version for lower-powered laptops. With HP SureStart, HP claims it is the world’s most secure dock.

The HP Thunderbolt G4 Dock 120W and 280W are expected to be available in May starting at 329 and 439, respectively.

HP ZBook Studio and ZBook Fury G9 mobile workstations pack desktop-class power into compact designs

HP’s latest mobile workstations have the power you’d expect from a desktop replacement, with the new HP ZBook Fury G9 sporting a 55-watt Intel Alder Lake-HX processor, support for NVIDIA or AMD discrete graphics, and up to 128GB of DDR5 memory. Measuring 1.1 inches thick and weighing 5.4 pounds or more, it’s not the most portable notebook around, but with a 95 Wh battery the 16 inch notebook is a lot easier to take on the go than a true desktop.

If you’re willing to sacrifice a little horsepower for improved portability, the new ZBook Studio G9 also has a 16 inch display, but this model starts at 3.8 pounds and features a 45-watt Intel Alder Lake-H processor and support for up to 64GB of RAM and NVIDIA RTX A5500 or GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics.

Both laptops are expected to hit the streets in June, 2022. Here’s an overview of some key specs for the latest members of the HP ZBook Studio family:

A laptop with a big black Z on the lid. https://cdn.statically.io/img/www.windowscentral.com//sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/large/public/field/image/2020/04/HP-zbook-2.jpg? Yeah that’s not going to sell well, especially in Ukraine. It might be popular in Russia, if there weren’t a bunch of trade embargoes. Shipping direct from Communist China to Russia is a likely work-around, especially since the laptop is probably made in China to begin with.

You know, as much as annoys me how you just HAD to bring that up like that, that is kind of a stupid logo regardless of current events. I mean, okay, fine, someone looking up “Z laptop” is still going to find HP’s website thanks to HP shoveling gobs of money at search engines. But it still, at a glance, reminds me of a cheap brand using the Xtreme Kool LetterZ instead of Hewlett-Packard which, given how old it is, just seems like it might carry a bit more prestige. I have a better idea, stick the italicized letters HP in front of, superimposed over, the giant Z. The Z and the HP should be contrasting colors/shades.

@Some Guy said: “You know, as much as annoys me how you just HAD to bring that up like that…” What annoys you? Of course I had to bring up the big black italic “Z” on the laptop lid. It’s offensive to me after watching the atrocities being committed by Russia in Ukraine under that moniker! What if HP put a big Swastika on the laptop, would that be OK with you too?

Yeah, I would, if it was a letter used as parts of words and had a dedicated button to type it on your keyboard. HP has been using Z to refer to their workstation products for years. Nissan isn’t changing the name of the Z, the sports car, over it. They shouldn’t change it just because a bunch of hypersensitive people get reminded of bad news that they can’t realistically do anything about, especially not when no one really has any moral high ground to stand on. You’re not a better person for getting offended, you know. Isn’t it exhausting caring so much about whatever crisis the TV is talking about? Isn’t it stressful? But you have to, because you’re afraid of losing whatever friends you have. You HAVE to show them you are doing ALL YOU CAN to condemn whatever everyone who’s still allowed to talk are complaining about. I bet you’re thinking of something awful to call me right now, “Russia-apologist”, “atrocity denier”, “FSB agent”, “messed up deranged loser with no friends”. How dare you try and downplay the destruction and bloodshed, you ignorant piece of trash! They should go back and delete everything you ever wrote because it was tainted by a selfish, unempathetic mind! Of course it’s offensive, after you watch it. But that’s because you watched it, and you didn’t watch what other countries have done, and the pain they inflicted, no, as far at the TV was concerned they were heroes! Removing dictators! Fostering democracy! Totally didn’t destroy all the infrastructure, kill millions of people, destabilize regions, leaving terrorists in control, they couldn’t have been bad, because someone living in those countries would bear part of that guilt and be well deserving of serious punishment for it! THEY VOTED FOR IT! I’m just tired. Tired of caring about things I can’t change. Changing a logo won’t bring those people back to life. Keeping the logo the same won’t kill more people. The logo won’t cause people in power to listen to their constituents instead of their sponsors any more or less. Under these circumstances, changing the logo is just a sign of submission, going along with whatever a bunch of racist hypocrites on TV want. And that is what is so annoying about it.
