The screen of the Redmi 9 is noticeably darker (the brightness in the photos is 103 versus 114 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the Redmi 9 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen. The maximum brightness is not high, but given the excellent anti-glare properties, the readability of the screen even on a sunny day outdoors should be at an acceptable level. The minimum brightness value is 1.6 cd / m², so in complete darkness the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located to the right of the front speaker grill, very close to the top edge of the front panel). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider: with it, the user can try to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions. If you do not intervene, in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 6 cd / m2 (a bit dark), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 550 lx) it sets it to 140-170 cd / m2 (normal), and conditionally in direct sunlight the brightness reaches 380 cd / m² (maximum, this is what you need). We slightly increased the brightness in complete darkness and for the above three conditions we got 15, 150 and 380 cd / m², this result was fine for us. It turns out that the automatic brightness control function works adequately and allows the user to customize his work for individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker either.

This device has a dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness with an unobvious dependence on time and on the nature of the displayed image. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on the hue (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of gray shades on almost the entire screen. For this reason, a number of tests. determining the contrast and response time, comparing the black illumination at angles. we carried out (however, as always) when displaying special templates with a constant average brightness, and not single-color fields across the entire screen. In general, such a non-switchable brightness correction does nothing but harm, since a constant change in screen brightness can at least cause some discomfort.

The default color temperature is high. However, in this device, when the Auto profile is selected, it is possible to correct the color balance by adjusting the hue by a dot on the color wheel or by choosing preset options.
The result after manual correction is good (see graphs below), as the color temperature decreases and the deviation from Spectra in blackbody (ΔE) remains below 3 for most of the gray scale, which is considered excellent for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade. this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

In principle, bright light can disrupt the circadian rhythm (see the article about the iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display), but everything is solved by adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, and there is absolutely no distortion of the color balance, reducing the contribution of blue meaning.
To summarize: the screen does not have a very high maximum brightness (380 cd / m²), but it has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can somehow be used outdoors even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level (down to 1.6 cd / m²). It is also acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include the presence of an effective oleophobic coating, no air gap in the layers of the screen and no visible flicker, high contrast and excellent uniformity of the black field, as well as close to sRGB color gamut and good color balance (after slight correction). The disadvantages are low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered good. The lack of a margin of brightness does not allow to put a higher mark.
Appearance and usability
It was the second path that the Chinese manufacturer took, preparing a new budget smartphone Redmi 9: its body is not glass and slippery, but plastic and rough, it practically does not show fingerprints and dirt. Smartphone doesn’t look expensive, but always tidy.
However, this did not solve another problem: hard plastic still slips briskly out of the hand. This is facilitated by the strongly rounded and narrowed sidewalls, which are also devoid of the corrugated coating, which is only on the rear wall. And this despite the fact that as such there is no frame around the perimeter of the case, it is simply “drawn” on a single plastic trough that completely covers the inside of the smartphone along with the sidewalls. So no one bothered to make the sides rough and not slippery either.

As for the rest, we can say that the camera shoots well in good lighting, and even very well taking into account the cost of the smartphone. Detail and clarity are quite decent, as well as adequate color reproduction without visible distortion. On the edges of the frame, areas of confusion appear, in the corners there are outright smears, but this is normal for budget optics. The pictures are clean, there is practically no noise on them. When the lighting deteriorates, the quality does not drop to completely obscene, but the degradation is significant. In general, if you have no illusions about the quality of cameras in budget smartphones, Redmi 9 will not disappoint you.
A good phone with its own nuances, comparison with Xiaomi Mi 5 and Xiaomi Redmi NOTE 8 PRO
My old Mi 5 started to get really bad with charging, so it’s time to choose a new phone. What a disappointment I have, from the fact that there are no more phones of my usual size. All huge shovels. I started looking and eventually found a cool phone that was both normal in price and seemingly with good (excellent) characteristics. Redmi laptop 8 pro.
In the end, my choice fell on Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, only without the Pro prefix. Having used it for a month now, I can say what I like and don’t, compare with the previous MI 5, and also say why I decided to save a little and not take the Pro:

Phone size. My 8 with a diagonal of 6.21 fell into my hand very well and I got used to it quickly, although I still can’t work with it with one hand, but in 8 pro with 6.53 it was impossible to work at all.
The camera in comparison did not make any difference at all, although in the latter there are as many as 4 cameras and 64 megapixels, instead of 48 megapixels. In fact, these ranges are expressed only in the size of the file and image.
So due to the fact that there was no difference, I decided not to overpay and just took Redmi 8. My phone is in blue. And now I will write the main characteristics for the average user and what I don’t really like:
Screen. The screen, in comparison with MI 5, differs as for me only in size and lack of frames, to be honest, I’m still more used to it when there is at least one button on the panel. I really miss her. The screen is more and more information, for example, if you climb the sites, you can immediately see it. I like it)) Otherwise, the image quality seems to be the same. In general, working with such a phone is visually more pleasant if you set the brightness to maximum. Otherwise, approximately the same impressions remain.
Multitasking. Multitasking and RAM work great. Open at least twenty applications. everything will work well and smartly, but in MI 5 everything worked exactly the same with RAM 3, and I don’t really see the difference.
Battery. The battery holds up well like all new smartphones. I can compare it with what was originally with mi 5, since now it is already completely dead. Charging drops slowly, with passive use (lazy viewing of messages, whatsapp, a little music during the day, the phone lasted for about a day and a half. If you actively climb sites at normal brightness, charging takes about 5% every 25 minutes. ) A plus. that the phone does not sit down in the cold, MI5 was discharged instantly from the moment of purchase.
Sound. The sound pumped up. It is much louder than in MI 5, but in fact, if you make this sound at a volume level that overlaps my old smartphone, then the sound becomes shitty. Phonit and listening to music is not pleasant. So there is really no difference either.!
Sensors. Interesting head and fingerprint sensors. BUT! In an experiment, three out of 10 people had a sensor mistaking their heads for mine! Opa on. So I turned off this feature.
