Smartphone as Bluetooth modem

Another wireless way to connect a laptop to the network via a smartphone is to use it as a Bluetooth modem. This option is convenient when there is no USB cable at hand and high data transfer speed is not required. At the same time, battery consumption is noticeably reduced, which allows you to use the Internet for a long time.

To activate this type of connection, you must turn on the Bluetooth function in your phone and in the settings allow visibility to other devices. Next, in the smartphone settings, you need to activate the “Bluetooth modem” mode. After that, on the laptop, you need to start a search for devices in the visibility range. From the list that appears, you need to select a smartphone that works as a modem.

To pair the two devices, you will need to enter a numerical confirmation code, which will appear on the laptop monitor. After synchronizing the devices, the drivers will be automatically installed on the laptop PC. Then a new available network will appear in the list of wireless connections, through which the Internet will be accessed. It should be noted that the data transfer speed when using this method will be approximately 10 times less than when using a smartphone as a router.

How to use your smartphone as a router

Not everyone knows that a modern smartphone can act not only as a client of a wireless network, but also be a full-fledged router. In this case, it is able to replace the adapter and become an access point at the same time for several devices with a Wi-Fi module. In this case, the phone does not need to be connected to a laptop with a cable and you can use the Internet throughout the entire range.

To activate this function, you need to enable data transmission via the mobile network in the system notification curtain of your smartphone. In the same place, in the Wi-Fi menu, you need to activate the access point by performing the following settings:

  • set the name of the network;
  • select the data transmission frequency (from the list of available ones);
  • set a password (or disable it).

If these icons are missing in the smartphone notification curtain, then they can be found in the android settings menu. After completing these simple steps, a new access point with the specified name will appear in the laptop’s Wireless & networks menu. By connecting to it and entering a password if necessary, you can freely use the Internet.

Ways to connect a smartphone as a modem

A modem is a compact mobile device that allows you to create an Internet access point within a network coverage area. But with the development of technology, these devices have ceased to be relevant, since any smartphone can be used as a modem. It is very convenient and you do not need to spend money to buy a separate gadget. Let’s consider the main ways to connect a smartphone like a laptop modem:

  • using a smartphone as a Wi-Fi router;
  • connecting a smartphone as a modem via USB output;
  • smartphone operation in Bluetooth modem mode.

How to use your smartphone as a laptop modem

In the era of universal computerization and the development of the Internet, this issue is of interest to many users. After all, a Wi-Fi signal, and even more so a wired network, is not always available. While the mobile Internet can be used anywhere. The main thing is to have a high-quality cellular network coverage of your mobile operator. over, the speed of data transmission in the 3G and 4G networks allows you to comfortably use the Internet.

Connecting a smartphone as a modem via USB output

Using a smartphone as a wireless modem for a laptop computer has one significant drawback. the limited battery power of the phone. The following method can solve this problem. It consists in connecting a smartphone as a USB modem. This feature is present in all smartphones, starting with version 4 of Android OS.

To do this, you need to connect the phone to the laptop with a cable. Then, in the settings of wireless networks, activate the item “Modem mode”. After that, Android will work in the mode of a virtual network card, which does not require the installation of special software. A smartphone, like a USB modem for a laptop, will provide your device with a stable Internet.

We’ve looked at ways to connect an Android smartphone as a modem for Windows laptops. At the same time, there are no options available that would guarantee a successful connection of the android to the MacBook. To do this, you need to use an iPhone, which is very easy to sync with a laptop from Apple.

When the quality of pixels is determined, and among them it was possible to find “burnt out”, you can start looking for applications that will correct the situation:

  • JScreenFix is easy to use, you need to use the Fix Stuck Pixels button to get started. The developer promises 30 minutes to complete this operation, but the service center masters recommend leaving the devices. Not less than 10-12 hours for a more complete check;
  • Pixel Fixer: Another program similar to JScreenFix. To restore pixels, you also need to click on the green button;
  • Dead Pixel Treatment: The platform does more than test a mobile phone for dead pixels. And then “heals” them, but at the same time reveals other defects in the display.

When using applications, it is recommended that during the “treatment” the device does not disconnect it from the chargers. The smartphone is always on during pixel processing, so the charging may not be enough.

Microcracks of the screen are fraught with a break in the power circuit. If this happens, then you will have to change the screen. Fortunately, in China, they are several times cheaper.

It happens, and the malfunction lies in the incorrect installation of the SIM card or flash drive. Try to take them out and check what will happen.

A map with problems can be repaired by restoring broken clusters using a PC.

If shaken, a poorly positioned plug from the display may fall out. What will entail the disconnection of the image transmission module, or partial disconnection.

Remove the cover of the device, and plug the ribbon cable into the socket. If it is inserted, take it out and insert it. In this case, do not forget to disconnect the power cable from the battery.

You bought yourself a phone, and you installed a SIM card from an old phone. In this situation, the SIM card is most likely to blame. Since it is simply outdated, and therefore not supported in the new smartphone. You have spent all the funds from your personal account, so it is worth checking the balance. The fact is that almost all mobile operators restrict access to the Internet with a negative balance. The update is installed on the phone. Upgrade failures occur for almost all phone users, and in fact, this happens not so rarely.

Without much hype and fanfare, the Chinese manufacturer updated its line of budget smartphones Redmi to version 9, launching the Redmi 9 model on the Russian market first, and then its simplified version Redmi 9A. Budget smartphones, in general, have always sold better than expensive ones, and in the current conditions of the protracted financial crisis and the collapse of the ruble, affordable devices turned out to be even more in demand. And now the “people’s” brand produces a cheap smartphone with interesting technical capabilities. What is good about the new Redmi 9 and is it worth buying. we will tell you in a detailed review.

Review of the budget smartphone Redmi 9

Screen

The Redmi 9 smartphone is equipped with an IPS display with a diagonal of 6.53 inches and a resolution of 1080 × 2340, covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The physical dimensions of the screen are 70 × 151 mm, the aspect ratio is 19.5: 9, and the dot density is 395 ppi. The width of the frame around the screen is 3.5 mm from the sides, 5 mm from the top and 8 mm from the bottom. The frame is wide by modern standards. The screen does not support an increased refresh rate (90 Hz or more), the choice of screen resolution is also not offered.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are better than that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left. Nexus 7, on the right. Redmi 9, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the Redmi 9 is noticeably darker (the brightness in the photos is 103 versus 114 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the Redmi 9 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen. One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense ambient light, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (much better in efficiency than Nexus 7), so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear at a slower speed than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with a full-screen white field, the maximum brightness value was about 380 cd / m². The maximum brightness is not high, but given the excellent anti-glare properties, the readability of the screen even on a sunny day outdoors should be at an acceptable level. The minimum brightness value is 1.6 cd / m², so in complete darkness the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located to the right of the front speaker grill, very close to the top edge of the front panel). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider: with it, the user can try to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions. If you do not intervene, in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 6 cd / m2 (a bit dark), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 550 lx) it sets it to 140-170 cd / m2 (normal), and conditionally in direct sunlight the brightness reaches 380 cd / m² (maximum, this is what you need). We slightly increased the brightness in complete darkness and for the above three conditions we got 15, 150 and 380 cd / m², this result was fine for us. It turns out that the automatic brightness control function works adequately and allows the user to customize his work for individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker either.

This smartphone uses an IPS-type matrix. The micrographs show the typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of micrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen and without tint inversion. For comparison, here are the photos in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Redmi 9 and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K.

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field.

The colors on the Redmi 9’s screen have natural saturation, the color balance of the Nexus 7 and the tested screen is different. The photo was taken in the case of the Auto profile in the screen settings:

In the case of the Saturated profile, there are no noticeable differences from the Auto profile with the default settings, and when the Standard profile is selected, the color balance changes slightly and the color contrast increases. The second leads to a terrible result, it remains a mystery why the developers did this:

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but in the Redmi 9 the contrast decreased to a greater extent due to the strong highlighting of black and a greater decrease in brightness.

The brightness at the angle of the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of the Redmi 9, the brightness decreased more. The black field is strongly lightened when deviated along the diagonal, but remains conditionally neutral gray. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same!):

When viewed from a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is excellent:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high. about 1400: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 20 ms (10 ms on 10 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 35 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.26, which is close to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve in places deviates from the power dependence:

This device has a dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness with an unobvious dependence on time and on the nature of the displayed image. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on the hue (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of gray shades on almost the entire screen. For this reason, a number of tests. determining the contrast and response time, comparing the black illumination at angles. we carried out (however, as always) when displaying special templates with a constant average brightness, and not single-color fields across the entire screen. In general, such a non-switchable brightness correction does nothing but harm, since a constant change in screen brightness can at least cause some discomfort.

The color gamut in the case of the Auto profile is close to sRGB:

When choosing a profile, Standard coverage is slightly adjusted:

The spectra show (Auto profile) that the matrix filters moderately mix the components together:

The default color temperature is high. However, in this device, when the Auto profile is selected, it is possible to correct the color balance by adjusting the hue by a dot on the color wheel or by choosing preset options.

The result after manual correction is good (see graphs below), as the color temperature decreases and the deviation from Spectra in blackbody (ΔE) remains below 3 for most of the gray scale, which is considered excellent for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade. this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

In the settings, you can reduce the intensity of the blue component:

In principle, bright light can disrupt the circadian rhythm (see the article about the iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display), but everything is solved by adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, and there is absolutely no distortion of the color balance, reducing the contribution of blue meaning.

To summarize: the screen does not have a very high maximum brightness (380 cd / m²), but it has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can somehow be used outdoors even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level (down to 1.6 cd / m²). It is also acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include the presence of an effective oleophobic coating, no air gap in the layers of the screen and no visible flicker, high contrast and excellent uniformity of the black field, as well as close to sRGB color gamut and good color balance (after slight correction). The disadvantages are low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. Taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered good. The lack of a margin of brightness does not allow to put a higher mark.

Appearance and usability

It was the second path that the Chinese manufacturer took, preparing a new budget smartphone Redmi 9: its body is not glass and slippery, but plastic and rough, it practically does not show fingerprints and dirt. Smartphone doesn’t look expensive, but always tidy.

However, this did not solve another problem: hard plastic still slips briskly out of the hand. This is facilitated by the strongly rounded and narrowed sidewalls, which are also devoid of the corrugated coating, which is only on the rear wall. And this despite the fact that as such there is no frame around the perimeter of the case, it is simply “drawn” on a single plastic trough that completely covers the inside of the smartphone along with the sidewalls. So no one bothered to make the sides rough and not slippery either.

How To Factory Reset & Configure Xiaomi Redmi 8

The block with cameras was installed right in the middle, so even modules that stick out a little from the case still make the smartphone unstable on a hard surface. Yes, and a supporting finger always blocks one of the cameras when shooting.

A large teardrop-shaped cutout was made for the front camera. One camera, no LED indicator on the front panel.

The side buttons are installed on one side, which is good. The buttons are large, easily groped blindly, have a clear response, there are no complaints about them.

Fingerprint scanner. classic, capacitive. It works quickly and clearly, the arrangement is also classic, right under the index finger, although visually it is not separated from the lens unit, but combined with them.

The card slot is triple: it is designed for two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD memory card at the same time. Hot swappable cards supported.

On the top there is an infrared port and an auxiliary microphone.

At the bottom there is a speaker, a conversational microphone, a USB Type-C connector, and a 3.5 mm audio output for headphones.

The smartphone is available in three colors. dark gray, blue-purple and green. The smartphone case did not receive full protection from dust and moisture.

Camera

The Redmi 9 has 4 lenses on the back, but there is no telephoto lens among them. Of the four modules, only two fully “shoot”. the main and ultra-wide, and the other two with minimum parameters (2 and 5 megapixels, f / 2.4) work as a depth-of-field sensor and a macro lens with a low resolution. The smartphone camera does not have a special night mode.

  • 13 MP, 1 / 3.1 ″, 1.12 μm, f / 2.2, 28 mm, PDAF (main)
  • 8 MP, 1 / 4.0 ″, 1.12 μm, f / 2.2, 118 ° (ultra wide)
  • 5 MP, f / 2.4 (macro)
  • 2 MP, f / 2.4 (scene depth measurement)

The main module has a 1 / 3.1 ″ sensor (pixel size 1.12 µm). Its PDAF lens focuses more or less briskly, but still not lightning fast. There is no stabilizer. The matrix is not happy with the width of the dynamic range: in bright daylight, either the sky is whitewashed, or there are blockages in the shadows. Shooting contrasting scenes on such a smartphone will be difficult. at least until the installation of Google Camera with HDR mode.

As for the rest, we can say that the camera shoots well in good lighting, and even very well taking into account the cost of the smartphone. Detail and clarity are quite decent, as well as adequate color reproduction without visible distortion. On the edges of the frame, areas of confusion appear, in the corners there are outright smears, but this is normal for budget optics. The pictures are clean, there is practically no noise on them. When the lighting deteriorates, the quality does not drop to completely obscene, but the degradation is significant. In general, if you have no illusions about the quality of cameras in budget smartphones, Redmi 9 will not disappoint you.

your, redmi, phone

A good phone with its own nuances, comparison with Xiaomi Mi 5 and Xiaomi Redmi NOTE 8 PRO

My old Mi 5 started to get really bad with charging, so it’s time to choose a new phone. What a disappointment I have, from the fact that there are no more phones of my usual size. All huge shovels. I started looking and eventually found a cool phone that was both normal in price and seemingly with good (excellent) characteristics. Redmi laptop 8 pro.

In the end, my choice fell on Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, only without the Pro prefix. Having used it for a month now, I can say what I like and don’t, compare with the previous MI 5, and also say why I decided to save a little and not take the Pro:

Just because there was practically no difference in them, except for:

Phone size. My 8 with a diagonal of 6.21 fell into my hand very well and I got used to it quickly, although I still can’t work with it with one hand, but in 8 pro with 6.53 it was impossible to work at all.

The camera in comparison did not make any difference at all, although in the latter there are as many as 4 cameras and 64 megapixels, instead of 48 megapixels. In fact, these ranges are expressed only in the size of the file and image.

So due to the fact that there was no difference, I decided not to overpay and just took Redmi 8. My phone is in blue. And now I will write the main characteristics for the average user and what I don’t really like:

Screen. The screen, in comparison with MI 5, differs as for me only in size and lack of frames, to be honest, I’m still more used to it when there is at least one button on the panel. I really miss her. The screen is more and more information, for example, if you climb the sites, you can immediately see it. I like it)) Otherwise, the image quality seems to be the same. In general, working with such a phone is visually more pleasant if you set the brightness to maximum. Otherwise, approximately the same impressions remain.

Multitasking. Multitasking and RAM work great. Open at least twenty applications. everything will work well and smartly, but in MI 5 everything worked exactly the same with RAM 3, and I don’t really see the difference.

Battery. The battery holds up well like all new smartphones. I can compare it with what was originally with mi 5, since now it is already completely dead. Charging drops slowly, with passive use (lazy viewing of messages, whatsapp, a little music during the day, the phone lasted for about a day and a half. If you actively climb sites at normal brightness, charging takes about 5% every 25 minutes. ) A plus. that the phone does not sit down in the cold, MI5 was discharged instantly from the moment of purchase.

Sound. The sound pumped up. It is much louder than in MI 5, but in fact, if you make this sound at a volume level that overlaps my old smartphone, then the sound becomes shitty. Phonit and listening to music is not pleasant. So there is really no difference either.!

Sensors. Interesting head and fingerprint sensors. BUT! In an experiment, three out of 10 people had a sensor mistaking their heads for mine! Opa on. So I turned off this feature. The fingerprint did not disappoint anyone, so I left it, after all, it takes longer to enter the pattern key than just put your finger on. On the other hand, if you put the unlocking on the head purely for convenience. outside in winter. this is a great option.

The camera also upset me, I thought it would be better than my MI 5, but everything is about the same: if the lighting is good, then the photos are good. There is no light. and the photo is not good. I think you saw the appearance, so I’ll just show you photos taken with this phone:

The flashlight is very weak, light compared to MI 5 by 30%. Why it was necessary to stick in a bunch of useless cameras and not make a normal flashlight?

Settings. For me, some kind of complicated. And all because absolutely all programs are configured to work with the Internet. All themes, calls, viewing files, music. all through Google programs on the Internet. Topic download for the word, none failed. everything does not fit my model. Remained with the one that was originally. Well, all the settings with some kind of such nuances and cockroaches. I can’t say that I’m a noob in technology, but I wanted some kind of simplicity.

Calls. Audibility is good, but the microphone’s mute button is constantly triggered by pressing the ear, as a result, people just don’t hear me all the time, which is terribly annoying. In MI 5, this was not the case.

In general, what to say: if we compare Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 with Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, then there is no difference except in size in general, so does it make sense to overpay?

I really didn’t want to change the phone, it was completely fine with me, if not for the charging, and the fact that the senser started to junk. in general, taking this phone, changing it from MI5, for example, or similar models, you are unlikely to experience a sea of happiness, rather just a little pleasure from the big screen and the fact that the phone no longer glitches and does not discharge (from time, not from technical characteristics).

The model as a whole is worth its money, because it came out to me as much as my first phone, especially considering inflation. I think for this one), if you increase the budget for one phone to 20-21 thousand, then the level of the smartphone can be better and the quality is higher.
