Push notifications and Android

First, let’s understand the types of push messages that come to the phone. Conventionally they can be divided into two types: push from the application and from the site.

  • Notifications (notifications) from applications installed on the Android device, the user can independently enable or disable in the system settings. Notifications can be set up only for those applications that are compatible with push-technology (such as Gmail, etc.).
  • Push-notifications can also come to the phone from websites through the browser (web push) without the need to install a mobile application. To do this, the visitor of the web resource must subscribe to receive messages from the site that is useful for him.

Let’s go into more detail on the principles of push technology for websites. After installing the push notification service, a subscription window will be displayed for each visitor to the web resource. In December 2017, the subscription widget for Chrome Mobile on Android changed, leading to a dramatic increase in mobile push subscriptions (300%).

Push messaging for both Android and PC devices shows high conversion rates. Up to 15% of visitors become subscribers to push notifications, and CTR of push notifications sometimes reaches 20-30% (clickability rate depends on the mailing settings). Using the technology provides an increase in daily website traffic up to 25%.

On the Gravitec service.net developed a tool to calculate the effectiveness of the mailing for each specific site. Calculator allows you to calculate the forecast for growth in attendance and revenue for 3 months after push-notifications are connected.

How Ajax push notifications work

Ajax uses Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) service and our own software solution to deliver event push notifications to the mobile app. FCM may not work properly on some Android devices. Ajax software solution increases the reliability of push message delivery, but requires extra smartphone battery resources.

For more reliable notifications delivery, enable the Ajax services. go to the app settings (tap on the 3 horizontal bars in the upper left corner, select the App Settings menu) and activate the Background Connection and Re-run the app.

When you enable background connection, the Ajax app regularly checks the delivery of notifications via the Ajax Cloud service. If for some reason one or more notifications were not delivered to the Ajax application. the service resends them.

In smartphones with Android 8.0 and higher there are two push notification delivery channels. Alarm Channel, which is used to deliver alarms and Main Channel. for all other events. In order not to miss notifications, channels need to be assigned a high priority.

How to do it:

Go to menu: Smartphone Settings → Apps → App Details.

To avoid missing notifications in Do Not Disturb mode (when Only Important Notifications are activated), turn on the Priority Interruptions Only option.

Change notification sounds

If you’re used to and can’t live without audible notifications, there’s an easy way to optimize the way you receive them. Set a specific sound for important notification categories, so you can instantly know when something needs your attention, and when it’s safe to ignore incoming notifications.

This time we should again go to the notification categories, as described in the first point and click on “Sound. Now select any ringtone that you have previously saved or create your own by clicking on the plus sign at the end of the list with the ringtones. Over time you’ll learn to identify types of notifications by their sound alone, and if you like the concept you can apply the same settings to incoming calls in Contacts.
