How to remove login password on Windows 11. HP laptop Windows 11
How to remove login password on Windows 11
If you want to log in automatically on Windows 11, in this guide, we’ll show you how to remove your account password.
- To remove password on Windows 11, open Settings Accounts Sign-in options, click on “Change” for the “Password” settings, leave the fields blank, and click on “Next.” This only works for local accounts.
- If you have a Microsoft account, open netplwiz, select the account, and clear the “User must enter a user name and password to use this computer” option. This process will sign you in automatically, mimicking an account without a password.
- Alternatively, you can also remove the password from Computer Management System Tools Local Users and Groups Users, right-clicking the user and choosing “Properties,” leaving the password fields blank, and clicking “OK.”
On Windows 11, you can remove the login password from an account in at least three ways, and in this guide, you will learn how. Using a password on your account helps to protect your computer and files from unauthorized access from the internet or locally. However, in some situations, a password may not be as necessary as speeding up the process of accessing the desktop.
If security isn’t a concern, Windows 11 has at least several ways to remove the account password for an automatic sign-in experience.
In this guide, you will learn the steps to sign in automatically by removing the login password on Windows 11. (See also this video tutorial to complete this task.)
Disable password login on Windows 11
A Windows 11 setup with a Microsoft account doesn’t allow you to remove the password entirely because the authentication is integrated with the online service. However, configure the device to sign in automatically to give you the experience of an account without a password.
To remove the login password on Windows 11, use these steps:
- Open Start on Windows 11.
- Search for netplwiz and click the top result to open the Control Panel applet.
- Under the “Users for this computer” section, select the account to remove its password.
- Clear the “User must enter a user name and password to use this computer” option.
Quick tip: If the option is missing, open Settings Accounts Sign-in options and turn off the “For improved security, only allow Windows Hellow sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device” option and reopen the netplwiz applet.

Once you complete the steps, the password won’t be removed from the account, but the computer will sign in automatically every time you start the device.
Remove password login on Windows 11
If you want to remove the Windows 11 account password entirely, you need to switch the Microsoft account to a local account type.
Remove password for Microsoft account
To switch account types to remove the Windows 11 password, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Accounts.
- Click the Your info tab.
- Under the Account settings section, click the “Sign in with a local account instead” option.
- Click the Next button.
- Confirm your current password.
- Click the Next button.
- Create a username for the account.
- Use blank for the “Password” and “Reenter password” options to remove the password entirely.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the “Sign out and finish” button.
After you complete the steps, the laptop will no longer connect with a Microsoft account and will log you in automatically every time you start the system.
Remove password for local account
Removing the password is a lot easier if the device already has a local account on your computer.
To remove the password from a local account on Windows 11, use these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Click on Accounts.
- Click the Sign-in options tab.
- Under the “Ways to sign in” section, select the “Password” option.
- Click the Change button.
- Confirm your current account password.
- Click the Next button.
- Use blank for the “Password” and “Reenter password” options to remove the password entirely.
- Click the Next button.
- Click the Finish button.
Once you complete the steps, Windows 11 will sign in automatically moving forward.
If you want to remove a password because it is inconvenient, consider setting up Windows Hello with a fingerprint reader or camera to sign in with your face.
Remove login password from Command Prompt
To remove the Windows 11 account password with commands, use these steps:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
- Type the following command to view all the accounts and press Enter:
In the command, change USERNAME with the standard or administrator account name you want to update.
After you complete the steps, the account will be accessible without a password.
If you want to revert the changes, you can use the same steps outlined above, but on step No. 5, specify a new password.
Remove login password from Computer Management
Alternatively, you can remove the password for an existing local account through the Computer Management console, and here’s how:
- Open Start.
- Search for Computer Management and click the top result to open the console.
- Open System Tools Local Users and Groups Users.
- Right-click the Windows 11 account and select the Set password option.
- Click the Proceed button.
- Leave the fields blank to remove the account password.
- Click the OK button.

Over time, all lithium-ion batteries tend to lose their ability to hold their charge. This goes double for your laptop, which requires high-power output and often becomes hot in a poorly ventilated environment, which causes faster degradation. So, what can you do to increase your laptop battery lifespan?
While there are plenty of general battery health tips, a practical solution is to set a battery charge limit on your laptop to reduce unnecessary degradation and improve the battery lifespan. You can achieve this by using your computer’s built-in battery charge limiter. Here we show you how.
Setting a Battery Charge Threshold to Help Improve Laptop Battery Longevity
Modern laptop batteries don’t overcharge, so keeping your laptop plugged in doesn’t negatively impact your PC. However, if your battery charge remains at 100% all the time, it can cause abnormal swelling, eventually reducing the battery’s longevity.
Laptop manufacturers like Lenovo, HP, MSI, Dell, and Asus ship their computers with a built-in battery charge limiter to maximize the battery run time. Useful if you use your system plugged in all the time at 100% charge.
For systems that are always connected, laptop manufacturers recommend setting the max charge limit at 80%. So, when your battery reaches 80% capacity, it will stop charging automatically.
Depending on the laptop manufacturer, you can set your battery’s maximum power of RSOC (Relative State of Charge) from BIOS or the proprietary system companion app such as Lenovo Vantage.
How to Set Battery Charge Threshold for HP Laptops
On HP laptops, you can enable or disable the Adaptive Battery Optimizer to allow your system to optimize the battery pack for longevity. According to HP, this feature is currently only available for its business series notebooks.
If you are using an HP laptop, follow these steps to enable Adaptive Battery Optimizer, and configure battery health settings:
- Power off your HP laptop if it is On.
- Next, press the Power button to restart your PC. While the computer starts up, start pressing the F10 key to enter the HP BIOS Setup Utility.
- Once in BIOS, use the right arrow key to open the Configuration tab. If not, open the Advanced tab.
- Next, use the down arrow key and select Adaptive Battery Optimizer. If not available, select Power Management Options.
- Press Enter and select Enabled to turn on Adaptive Battery Optimizer.
- If your system has Power Management Options, then select the drop-down for Battery Health Manager and select Maximize my battery health. This setting maximizes the battery health by lowering the maximum battery charge level to 80%.
- Next, press the F10 key to save the changes and exit.
If you don’t have the Adaptive Battery Optimizer or Battery Health Management option in BIOS, try updating your BIOS. You can scan for a new BIOS update for your laptop on the HP Software and Driver Download page. Then, click on Let HP detect your product and follow the on-screen instructions to find the available updates for your system.
You can use the HP BIOS update and recovery utility to install the update. You can also perform a manual update by accessing the system diagnostic.
If the power management option doesn’t show up even after performing a BIOS update, it is safe to assume that your system does not support the feature yet.
How to Set the Battery Charge Threshold for Lenovo Laptops
You can use the Lenovo Vantage companion app to set a battery charge threshold for your Lenovo laptop. And unlike HP, Lenovo Vantage is compatible with almost all modern Lenovo portable computers.
To enable the battery charge limiter in Lenovo Vantage:
- First, launch the Lenovo Vantage app. If you don’t have the app installed, go to the Lenovo Vantage download page and download the program. Then, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
- In the Lenovo Vantage app, click the Device drop-down.
- Under Device Settings, click on Power.
- Next, scroll down to the Battery Settings section.
- Toggle the switch for Battery Charge Threshold to turn on the battery charge limiter option.
- Click on Start Charging When Below and select 50%.
- Next, click Stop Charging At and select 80%.
That’s it. Your Lenovo laptop will now stop charging when the battery charge level reaches 80% and run on AC power when plugged in. Once the battery charge level drops to 50%, it will start charging again.
How to Set Battery Charge Limiter in Asus Laptops
Asus laptops come equipped with the Asus Battery Health Charging feature. You can use it to set your battery’s maximum power of RSOC to extend its battery life. You can configure the Battery Health Charging option using the MyAsus app. Here’s how to enable it for your Asus laptop.
- Launch the MyAsus app on your PC. If you don’t have it installed, you can download MyAsus from Microsoft Store.
- Open the Customization tab in the left pane.
- In the Power Performance tab, you will see the Battery Health Charging option.
- Here, select Maximum lifespan mode. Once enabled, your Asus laptop will only charge up to 60% and charge again when the battery level is at 58% or below.
- Click OK to save the changes.
If you don’t find the Battery Health Charging option in the MyAsus app, check if your laptop supports the feature from the Asus website.
How to Set Battery Charge Threshold for MSI Laptop
You can configure your battery health option using MSI Dragon Center software on MSI laptops. Here’s how to do it.
- Launch the MSI Dragon Center software. It comes pre-installed on MSI devices, but if you don’t have one, you can download it from the Drag Center page.
- Click the Battery icon in the bottom toolbar to open Battery Health Option.
- Here, select the Balanced or Best for Battery option. The Balanced option will charge the battery up to 80%, while the Best for Battery option stops at 60%.
MSI also recommends performing battery calibration every three months to maintain battery life. The Battery Calibration option is available in the Battery Health Option section of the app.
How to Set Battery Charge Threshold for Dell Laptops
Dell laptops come equipped with the company’s Power Manager utility. It lets you manage your system’s power management capabilities, including configuring your PC primarily for AC use.
Follow these steps to set the battery charge threshold for your Dell laptop.
- Go to the Dell Power Manager Service page and download the service package. Once the installation is complete, install the Dell Power Manager utility from Microsoft Store.
- Launch the app and open the Battery Information tab in the left pane.
- Click on the Settings button in the top right corner.
- Select the Primarily AC Use option on the Settings page. This setting will help you extend your battery’s lifespan by lowering the charge threshold.
- Click OK to save the changes.
While the Dell Power Manager Utility is compatible with all Dell computers, the Primarily AC Use feature may not be available for all devices.
How to Set Battery Charge Threshold for Microsoft Surface Laptops
One of the premium offerings from Microsoft, Surface devices, also comes with a few battery optimization options. For example, Battery Limit Mode is a UEFI setting that lets you set a max charge limit of 50% for the battery to prolong its longevity.
Surface devices also feature a Battery Smart Charging feature. It is enabled by default and limits battery charge to 80% when it detects your device is plugged in for a long time or operating at a high temperature.
Both Battery Smart Charging and Battery Limit Mode are available on almost all surface devices except for a few. For example, the Surface 3 device misses out on the Battery Smart Charging feature, whereas Surface Laptop SE misses out on Battery Limit Mode.
To enable Battery Limit Mode on Surface Pro 4 and above:
- First, boot into Surface UEFI using the Power VolumeUp button.
- Select the Boot configuration tab in the left pane.
- Next, toggle the switch for Enable Battery Limit Mode.
- Save and exit to apply the changes.
To enable the Battery Smart Charging feature:
Note that the Battery Smart Charging feature is enabled by default. However, you can also manually configure it in the Surface app settings.
- Press the Win key and type Surface app.
- Open the Surface app from the search result.
- Expand the Smart Charging section and make sure it is not paused.
Was Your Laptop Not Listed?
If we didn’t get around to listing your brand or model of laptop, don’t fret. There are plenty of ways to extend laptop battery life with Windows power plans, which should work on any Windows laptop. And while they may not be as in-depth as the above tricks, they should still help extend your battery’s life considerably.
Set a Battery Charge Threshold to Prolong Your Laptop’s Battery Life
By setting a battery charge threshold for your laptop, you can ensure the battery never charges to its 100% capacity. Useful if you primarily use your system as a desktop with an external monitor while plugged in.
Other tips to increase your battery lifespan include using the system in optimal thermal condition (50 C° idle temperature and 78 C° under load) to prevent swelling issues. Additionally, you can use third-party battery analyzer tools to keep a tab on your laptop’s battery health.
HP Pavilion 14 (2022) Review: Build Your Own Budget Laptop
With lots of configuration options and a nice-looking, lightweight design, the HP Pavilion 14 is a bargain.
Managing Editor Josh Goldman is a laptop expert and has been writing about and reviewing them since built-in Wi-Fi was an optional feature. He also covers almost anything connected to a PC, including keyboards, mice, USB-C docks and PC gaming accessories. In addition, he writes about cameras, including action cams and drones. And while he doesn’t consider himself a gamer, he spends entirely too much time playing them.
Expertise Laptops, desktops and computer and PC gaming accessories including keyboards, mice and controllers, cameras, action cameras and drones Credentials than two decades experience writing about PCs and accessories, and 15 years writing about cameras of all kinds.
The HP Pavilion 14 is a budget laptop that looks and performs above its price. At 3.2 pounds (1.4 kilograms), the laptop can easily be a daily carry for school or work. It could also be a good home office laptop that can be easily connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse at a desk, but also has a screen that’s comfortably large enough for full-time use. It’s just a solid everyday laptop with a clean design.
The 14-inch laptop is available preconfigured or can be customized with starting at 650. HP offers a variety of options including AMD and Intel processors, discrete graphics and even a choice of four body colors. It gives you a lot of room to find a balance between your budget and performance needs. But even maxed out, the Pavilion 14 is 1,340. And that’s before any discounts to sweeten the deal. (Read on for more pricing details, including international prices.)
HP Pavilion Laptop 14 (2022)
Like
- Many configuration options including discrete graphics
- Attractive, lightweight design with a good port assortment
Don’t Like
The preconfigured model I tested is normally 800, which isn’t bad for a 14-inch 1080p laptop with a 12th-gen Intel Core i5 CPU, 16GB of memory and a 256GB SSD. But at the time of this review, this combination is only 550. The HP Pavilion 14 is also available in the UK and Australia with AMD processors with starting at £630 and AU1,499.- those are marked down also, to £400 and AU1,199.
It’s not unusual for certain models and configurations to cycle on and off sale. So if you can afford to wait for a discount, it’s definitely worth it because it can be significant. HP will also discounts on the Intel and AMD customizable versions on occasion, so you can choose the exact specs you want.
HP also offers a choice of three displays. All of them are Full HD (1,920×1,080 pixels). My review laptop had the base display, which, like the rest of the configuration, is fine for general use. It’s not especially bright.- it’s rated at 250 nits.- and the glossy coating isn’t ideal if you regularly work near bright Windows or lights. From this display, you can step up to a touchscreen. The top option has a rated brightness of 400 nits and a 100% sRGB color range, making it the best choice if you’ll be editing photos or videos or want better color in general.
One of the few things that can’t be upgraded is the webcam. It’s a 720p HD camera that was standard before everyone started spending more time on video calls and it really requires plenty of light for a decent picture. It would be nice if an upgrade to HP’s 5-megapixel webcam were available. HP does include its Enhanced Lighting app that turns part of your display into a ring light to help you look a little better on camera.
If the webcam is important to you, consider the Pavilion 14 Plus. It’s a little more expensive but adds the 5-megapixel webcam for sharper, more detailed videos, a second USB-C port and a microSD card slot, a fingerprint reader, higher-performance processors and graphics and an OLED display option.
Overall, HP put together a solid budget-friendly laptop with the Pavilion 14. There are a couple of relatively minor shortcomings. Battery life isn’t great. It hit 6 hours, 51 minutes on our streaming video rundown test with the display at 50% brightness and volume through earbuds at 50%. Also, there is flex in the lid and keyboard deck. It’s particularly noticeable in the center of the keyboard and when you press on the touchpad. It just makes this nice-looking laptop feel cheaper.
Otherwise, given its price, the HP Pavilion 14 is a highly likable laptop. If longer battery life is important and you don’t mind going smaller, strongly consider the Pavilion Aero 13. It’s also well priced and lasted for more than 10 hours in our tests, plus it only weighs 2 pounds. Outside of HP, consider the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i. This two-in-one is slightly more expensive but outperformed the Pavilion 14, has longer battery life and has features like a Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port, an SD card reader, a 1080p webcam with a privacy shutter and a fingerprint reader.
How we test computers
The review process for laptops, desktops, tablets and other computer-like devices consists of two parts: performance testing under controlled conditions in the CNET Labs and extensive hands-on use by our expert reviewers. This includes evaluating a device’s aesthetics, ergonomics and features. A final review verdict is a combination of both objective and subjective judgments.
The list of benchmarking software we use changes over time as the devices we test evolve. The most important core tests we’re currently running on every compatible computer include: Primate Labs Geekbench 5, Cinebench R23, PCMark 10 and 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra.
A more detailed description of each benchmark and how we use it can be found in our How We Test Computers page.
