Today, Huawei officially introduced two new smartphones. the P20 and P20 Pro. In this article, I will introduce you to the first model.
All previous years, the P series was the flagship, but this time the company decided to remove the Plus prefix and instead began to use the Pro prefix, although, as we know from mathematics, the sum does not change from changing the places of the terms. That is, the younger and older models with different parameters will go on sale. However, in fairness it should be noted that the Pro version is primarily distinguished by the third main camera module.
As expected, the Huawei P20 equipped with the latest generation HiSilicon Kirin processor, installed 128 GB of internal memory (without microSD support) and two main cameras with fast lenses, used the modern 19: 9 aspect ratio and updated the operating system to Android 8.1. Of course, the appearance has changed: the manufacturer abandoned the metal in favor of glass.
The gadget will be of interest to those who have recently chosen compact devices from Huawei or simply interested in technological solutions.
It is worth noting that the acquaintance was not held with the final version of the smartphone, so the article will not have screenshots and photos from the device. In addition, at the time of writing, the detailed technical specifications were not known, since the material was prepared a few days before the presentation. However, this format made it possible to quickly announce the material at a glance.
The price was also not known. I can assume that it will be about 45,000 rubles.
Of course, the main emphasis in the design was made on an elongated display with an original aspect ratio of 19: 9. That is, Huawei “stepped over” 18: 9 in order to make the display even longer with minimizing the screen frame at the top. Theoretically, the manufacturer could remove the fingerprint scanner in the front panel, and then the “chin” would disappear, and the frame on top could be made even. However, it seems to me that Huawei decided to go the simpler way. copy the “bollock” from the Apple iPhone X, because this device is now the most recognizable thanks to this way of allocating space from above on the front panel.
The edging is made of metal. It is glossy, the edges are as sloping as possible, and the corners are smooth. Again, the P20 in this regard looks like Apple’s X. The front and back panels are made of glass, the surfaces are even.
The dimensions of the Huawei P10 are 145.3 x 69.3 x 7 mm, and the dimensions of the Huawei P20 are 149.1 x 70.8 x 7.65 mm. That is, the novelty has almost not changed in width, but the height and thickness have slightly increased. Interestingly, the screen is 5.1 inches in the P10 and 5.8 inches in the P20. So there is still a breakthrough.
Huawei developers could make the screen less than 5.5 inches, then the device would be more compact: there is still a small category of people who need small dimensions of smartphones. It is this category that is currently choosing the Apple iPhone SE.
As for the colors, there will be such: black (The new deep black), blue (Midnight blue) and twilight (Ultra violet). the color of 2018. Pantone Color annually selects the main color of the year, setting a specific trend in design.
“Pantone’s color means a lot more than just a trend in the design world, it truly reflects our needs in today’s world.”. Lori Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Institute.
About the color itself: “Sensational, provocative and deep shade of purple, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultraviolet expresses originality, extraordinary and promising thinking that carries us towards the future”.
At the presentation, they said that Huawei P20 / P20 Pro are the first smartphones in the world with a gradient color of the glass cover. In general, not everything is so simple :).
Due to the adequate width (about 70 mm), the gadget is convenient to hold and use with one hand. Despite the use of glass, the P20 is not slippery.
Arrangement of elements: on the front panel on top. a selfie camera and a speaker; bottom. speaker, microphone and USB Type-C; on the right are the power and volume buttons; on the left is a slot for two nanoSIM; additional microphone. on top; on the back there are two lenses of the main cameras and a flash.
In general, Huawei P20 turned out to be cute, durable, created from quality materials.

The new generation of devices is equipped with elongated screens with an aspect ratio of 19: 9. This happened thanks to the additional space from above: the developers have allocated an “island” for the earpiece and front camera.
The diagonal of the Huawei P20 display is 5.8 inches, the resolution is 2240 × 1080 pixels, that is, a little more than FullHD. The matrix is most likely IPS. At the time of writing, there was no accurate information. The test sample had exactly the IPS screen. There is no point in evaluating quality so far.
As far as I know, the device supports face recognition to unlock the phone.
The Huawei P20 is equipped with a 3400 mAh built-in battery. Of course, we do not have data on the time of work. I suppose that with an IPS matrix of the screen, a smartphone can work all day under average load without any problems.
There is a fast charge Huawei SuperCharge.
Iron and software
As befits the flagship model, the Huawei P20 smartphone runs on a HiSilicon Kirin 970 proprietary processor: 8 cores (4xCortex-A73 2.36 GHz 4xCortex-A53 1.8 GHz), plus there is an i7 coprocessor and a Mali-G72 MP12 graphics accelerator. The same chipset is used in the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.
RAM is only 4 GB, and the internal memory did not spare. 128 GB. However, you must understand that the gadget does not have a slot for a memory card.
The software is Google Android OS version 8.1 with a proprietary shell EMUI 8.1. In view of the “crude” firmware, I will not describe the subtleties of the software.
The youngest model of Huawei P20 received two main camera modules: color at 12 MP (f / 1.6 aperture) and black and white at 20 MP (f / 1.8 aperture). Again we see a partnership with LEICA. Most likely, the P20 uses exactly the same lenses and camera modules as in the Mate 10 Pro. In this case, the Huawei P20 should produce very good photos with a wide dynamic range. Since at the presentation of the devices I basically “played” with the P20 Pro cameras, then, accordingly, in that material I talked about them a little more in detail.
I used the Huawei P10 Plus smartphone for about a year and I can say that it was one of the best devices for all the time that I tested different devices. It was easy to use, thin and relatively compact, with an excellent screen matrix and cool cameras, which I compared with top-end smartphones.
I am sure that the P20 will be no worse than its predecessor. The materials became nicer (my personal opinion), the case from the point of view of ergonomics became even more convenient, the screen received an aspect ratio of 19: 9. unusual and impressive. The cameras need to be tested, but if they are the same as the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, then this is great. The remaining parameters do not raise questions.
