The actions that must be performed for this vary depending on whether the computer is working autonomously, is part of a work group of two or more computers, or is a member of a domain. Choose the appropriate option to try to log in as an administrator to reset your password.
Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition

To log in as an administrator to reset your password, try the following:
Log in with an administrator account.
Reboot the computer.
Press CTRLALTDELETE twice, then type the username with administrator privileges.

Note. If you do not know another account with administrator privileges, try entering the Administrator value in the Username field.
In the Password field, enter the administrator password and click OK.

Note. If the administrator password is unknown, leave it blank and click OK.
Password reset.
From the Start menu, select Run.
Type control userpasswords2 and then click OK.
On the Users tab, click the name of the account for which you want to reset the password, then click Change Password.
Type a new password in the New Password window, then retype the password in the Confirm window, then click OK.
Restart your computer, then try logging in to Windows XP again.

Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition in a workgroup

To log in with an administrator account to reset your password when the computer is a member of a workgroup of two or more computers, follow these steps:
Log in with an administrator account.
Reboot the computer. Press and hold the F8 key until the Menu for Advanced Windows Boot Options screen appears.
Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode in the Windows Advanced Startup Menu, and then press ENTER.
Select Microsoft Windows XP edition, then press ENTER.

Note. At this step, edition means the version of Windows.
On the To get started page, click the username, select the Administrator account, and type the administrator password.
Press Enter and then Yes to confirm.
Password reset.
Click the Start button and select Run from the menu.
Type control userpasswords2 and then click OK.
Click the name of the account for which you want to change the password.
Click the Change Password button, then enter the new password.

Note. If you do not want to use a password, click Delete Password and go to step “e”.
Click the Change Password button.
Restart your computer, then try logging in to Windows XP again.

Windows XP Professional Edition in a domain

To log in with an administrator account to reset your password when the computer is a member of a domain, follow these steps:
Log in with an administrator account.
In the Windows Operating System dialog box, press CTRLALTDELETE, then enter the user name with administrator privileges.
In the Password field, enter the administrator password and click OK.

Note. If an administrator password is set to a blank password, do not enter it until you click OK.
Password reset.
Click the Start button and select Run from the menu.
Type the compmgmt.msc command and click OK.
In the Computer Management (Local) window, expand the Local Users and Groups component.
Select the Users folder, then right-click the account for which you want to reset the password.
Select Set Password, and then Continue.
Enter the new password in the New password field, then retype the password in the Confirm field, then click OK.
Restart your computer, then try logging in to Windows XP again.

Method 2: Use a password reset disk

To log in using a password reset disk, do the following: If the computer was previously part of the domain or is part of it now, go to the “Windows XP Professional in the Domain” section and follow these steps.
Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition

Reboot the computer.
On the Windows XP login screen, select the username on behalf of which you want to log on, and then press ENTER.

Note. The following error message appears:
Forgot your password? You can click the “?” Button to see a password hint, or you can use a password reset disk. Re-enter the password. Make sure that uppercase and lowercase letters are used correctly.
Select Use Password Reset Disk. The Password Reset Wizard starts. Using it, you need to create a new password for the account.
In the Password Reset Wizard dialog box, click Next.
Insert a disc into the drive to reset passwords into the CD-ROM drive, and then click Next.
In the Enter new password field, enter the new password, then enter it again in the Enter it again field to confirm.
In the Enter a hint for a new password field, enter a hint for the password and click Next.
Click Finish and try logging in to Windows XP again.

Windows XP Professional Edition in a domain

To log in using a password reset disk when the computer is a member of a domain or disconnected from a domain, follow these steps:
Reboot the computer.
When the Windows Operating System window appears, press CTRLALTDELETE.
In the Windows Logon window that appears, in the Password field, enter the incorrect password and click OK.
In the Logon Failure window, click Reset. The Password Reset Wizard launches, allowing you to create a new password for the local account.
When the message “Password Reset Wizard” appears, click Next.

In the Enter new password field, enter the new password, then enter it again in the Enter it again field to confirm.
