Learning English

My esteemed representative of the Internet media, the Gadget website, asked me for an expert opinion. My colleagues were faced with the question of life and death: they had to decide whether to call the iPad an iPad or an iPad. It is a reasonable question, moreover, this example shows the approximate logic which is used by a translator when he translates into Russian words which are not yet fixed in the dictionary.

Borrowings from foreign languages, which have only just entered Russian and have not yet been recorded in the relevant dictionaries, are usually learned by analogy with words of similar words that have already entered the norm. One recent example is the word blogger, which lost its second letter g on its way to the Russian oographic dictionary, similar to the words rapper, traffic, office, corridor, volleyball, gallery. But that was a duel between the English model of word formation and the Russian pronunciation norm: it is not the most thankful task to stretch out in Russian “of-f-f-f-f-ice” or “blog-g-g-g-ger”.

The case of “iPad” is much simpler: it does not require going into the word-formation of the original language. The only question here is whether to transliterate the word (that is, carry it into Russian letter by letter) or transcribe it (in other words, write it as it sounds). The modern norm suggests that it is the pronunciation that carries over: e-mail is incorrect, correct: email; it would be a mistake to write Tom Hanks, correct: Tom Hanks. Hence, the iped is closer to the Russian nature of borrowing.

I did not just bring up the example of the blogger. The point is that the rules of borrowing change from time to time. Often, the actual principle of translation plays a decisive role. At the beginning of the 20th century, perhaps right up to the Second World War, the era of formal translation reigned supreme: one had to break the Russian language, just to make sure that the number of syllables in a line matched the number of words in it Words like trigger, stopper, or allergy appeared in those days. After those times, however, we lived through two other eras: the quality Soviet dialectical translation (when you could put even other words, just to convey the right spirit) and the decadence of the 1990s-2000s (when velvet began to be translated as velvet and satin, respectively, despite the fact that the former is velvet and the latter is satin). Our days are marked by a new wave of culture: we, translators, have begun to listen to the nature of the Russian language. We borrowed the best from the Soviet era and incorporated the mistakes that came before and after that time.

A hundred years ago we could have said iPad, and that would have been the norm. The same as hauz (in Ilf and Petrov) instead of haus (e.g. townhouse), Child Harold (in Pushkin) instead of Childe Harold (now). No matter how you spin it, today we say Hampshire, not Hampshire, as the Brockhaus and Efron encyclopedia demanded at the beginning of the last century.

Jury’s unanimous verdict: iPad.

As a final remark, I will make a lyrical digression, useful for students of English pronunciation. I’ve been telling several of my acquaintances who live abroad, mostly in the iPad’s homeland, the United States, about the problem solved in Gadget. Apple Watch Series 7

Next in line is the Apple Watch. The main change here is the new screen. It became larger. again, due to the reduction of the frame, and in addition. The image now goes on the curved edges, which of course looks especially spectacular.

Specifications at the time of writing have not yet been published, so we can’t give exact numbers (what screen resolution and display diagonal are now). But Apple suggests assessing everything visually, demonstrating the following picture.

I must say, the Apple Watch was the last stronghold of USB Type-A chargers, and in order to charge it, you had to hold or, even more frustrating, take a charger with such a connector on it. Now you can take, for example, a MacBook and a charger to it and use the same charger unit to recharge your watch.

All other features listed in the presentation are related to watchOS 8 and, therefore, will be available when updating older devices.

And, as always, there are new colors of both the watches and the straps, but we’ll come back to that when the watch arrives for testing. It will be simultaneously with the start of sales in Russia (or a little earlier), but this date has not yet been announced. Like the iPad mini, all models of the Series 7 watch will be available in Russia “later this fall.

It is likely that this will be somehow synchronized with the launch of Fitness, to which Apple paid a lot of attention at the presentation.
