How to properly adjust the colors LG TV

TV tuning tips

For starters, what is “proper tuning.”. If you’ve been to an electronics store at least once, you’ve probably noticed that all the televisions on display show differently. What it has to do with? Which one is better?? Let’s get this straight.

I think you will agree that a TV should not only show a picture, but it should also present the least amount of distortion of the original content. The content is always created based on industry standards and recommendations, and the main purpose of any TV is to bring you the exact image you want to see. Everything matters: the tone of the actor’s skin, and the color of the sky at sunset, and what details of the image should be visible and what is hidden. There are international standards that describe how the picture on your TV screen should look. You’ve all probably met the abbreviations PAL, NTSC, or HDTV, but behind these letters and hide the properties of the video signal and the different parameters of the image. With the arrival of HDTV into our lives, most of the standards immediately became obsolete, and, in fact, the most relevant now is the REC709 standard, which is used in high definition television (HD) and in Blu-ray video. The general parameters of a proper picture are:. 6500K color temperature (D65). gamma is linear, with a recommended value of 2.22, for darkened room 2.4. recommended brightness ~120 cd/m2. REC709 color gamut (similar to sRGB gamut).

The only sure way to get the correct picture on your TV is to do a hardware calibration. It consists in that the reference images are fed to the input of the TV set and the measurements are taken from the screen. Then you adjust the TV settings until the picture is as close to the required standard as possible. But this setup is quite time consuming, requires knowledge, and above all equipment.

Is it possible to get a truer picture on your TV without having to do a hardware calibration?? Here are some tips based on my experience of tuning different TVs.

Which picture mode to choose (standard/dynamic/cinema)? On the vast majority of TVs, the most correct mode is Cinema/Cinema. Do not use Dynamic mode for viewing: because of the non-linear gamma the image is always wrong, and because of the greatly increased brightness of this mode strains the eyes, especially if you watch TV in dim light or in the dark.

Which color temperature mode to choose (cool/standard/warm)? On the vast majority of televisions the Warm mode is the closest to standard color temperature (6500K). If you have a choice of Warm1/Warm2 (on Samsung TVs), determine for yourself which one is best. Usually it is Warm2, but there may be exceptions.

Which settings are recommended to turn off to get the best image? It is necessary to disable all settings that adjust the brightness/contrast at the discretion of the TV. That is, you should turn off “dynamic contrast”, “power saving mode”, “light sensor”, “dynamic backlighting” and not use the “Dynamic” image mode.

How to set the “contrast” parameter correctly? In fact, this parameter is incorrectly called “contrast”, since the contrast is the ratio of the maximum brightness of the white field (white level) to the black level (the minimum luminosity level of the panel). So, the parameter “contrast” in the menu of the TV changes the white level, that is, the level of maximum brightness of the image.

For plasma:. it is better to adjust the parameter “contrast” in the dark;. to display an image with a white level window (100IRE) (links at the end of the article);. set the “contrast” parameter to a value close to the maximum (90-95);. reduce the “contrast” parameter, until the picture with white level (100IRE) will not “cut eyes”.

Samsung plasma TVs have a parameter “cell brightness” (cell light), which has a large impact on the overall picture brightness. You can immediately set it to a value close to the maximum (18-20), and then follow the recommendations.

LCD TVs are constructed in a slightly different way. they have a parameter “backlighting brightness” (sometimes called “backlight contrast”) which has the greatest value for the overall image brightness.

For LCD/LED:. better adjust in the dark;. set the “contrast” parameter close to maximum value (90-95);. display the image with the white level window (100IRE) (links at the end of the article);. set the “backlight brightness” parameter to maximum or obviously higher value than it is necessary;. decrease the “backlight brightness” parameter until the image with white level (100IRE) stops “cutting the eyes.

I do not recommend using the maximum values of the “contrast” parameter, because some TV sets have non-linear color temperatures when set to the maximum value. Excessively bright picture (and for the real brightness in the TV responsible “contrast” / “brightness of the backlight”) strains your eyes and leads to eye fatigue, remember this when you adjust these parameters.

How to set the “brightness” parameter correctly? The “brightness” parameter determines the black level. You can use the special image “Pluge pattern” to set it to the right position. In this picture the leftmost vertical line is black. To adjust the Brightness setting as needed, first increase the setting until you can see all the bars clearly, then decrease the Brightness setting until the left-most vertical bar fades into the background. You can also use special setup CDs, such as AVSHD (link at the end of the article), where in “Basic Settings” you will find the necessary images to configure the basic TV parameters.

How to adjust the picture on any LG TV

One of the main points of the initial adjustment of the TV, are the image parameters, such as brightness, sharpness and others. So you can set the values that suit the particular owner, which will fully enjoy watching TV channels. In addition to manually changing the setting modes, there is a whole list of preset parameters, which were originally set by the manufacturer. We’ve devoted this article entirely to this topic.

All you need is a TV remote control and a few minutes of your time. Adjusting the picture itself will not cause any difficulties. On the P/C press “setting” or “menu” button, depending on the model of the device. Then go to the tab “picture” and here adjust the required parameter: brightness, sharpness, color intensity, color combination, as well as the contrast. Thus, you can adjust the TV for your personal viewing comfort.

Image settings from the manufacturer

On each LG TV set, initially provides a choice of preset image settings, for this purpose, the remote control has a special button. This button allows you to switch between presets, without any additional action. Minimum number of available modes is three to five, this is enough for any program or movie.

“Dynamic”, “Standard”, “Cinema”, “User”, “Soft”. The list of available picture modes looks like this, although depending on models it can differ a little. Naturally, all these modes will differ in all parameters, brightness, color saturation, sharpness and so on, so each user can choose the most suitable for a particular movie, clip or TV show.

The custom mode requires a separate consideration, it switches the device from the factory settings to those that you set yourself. In essence, this is all that the owners of LG TV sets need to know about adjusting the image, these tips are sure to help you cope with the task yourself.

You can ask a question the masters of our service center by calling or writing your question on the feedback form.

Is it difficult to set up the TV properly? I’ll need the help of a wizard?

To achieve a proper display of the picture, is no more difficult than to perform the settings of the channels. It takes no more than 20 minutes of your time. To make your TV set a joy to the eye, you only need to adjust the image settings so that the test pictures are correctly displayed on the screen. How exactly it should be “right” you will see below. The test pictures have been chosen by experts so that you can enjoy any scene in terms of brightness, color, clarity, and contrast after adjusting.

Each single picture is used to configure one parameter. The Burosch test includes:

  • Pictures for adjusting five basic parameters: Format, Brightness, Contrast, Color and Focus.
  • Test pictures for simultaneous adjustment of several parameters
  • Pictures for professional calibration
  • Here are some real pictures to test

Unfortunately, modern manufacturers adjust their products frankly bad, because they are not interested in the fact that their displays conform to existing color standards, but in increasing sales of these displays. In an effort to sell more TVs, manufacturers are constantly trying to present “brighter blues” and “vibrant reds” than their competitors. They purposely intensify the brightness of certain colors to make products look more enticing on store shelves compared to their counterparts from other firms. At counters with seemingly identical products, the buyer will choose the brightest TV, or the one with colors that seem “deeper”. If manufacturers paid enough attention to the proper tuning of their products, all the televisions on the shelves would show a very similar picture.

The only sure way to get the right picture on the TV screen. hardware calibration. It consists in feeding reference images to the input of the TV and taking measurements from the screen. Is it possible to make the picture on your TV more faithful without resorting to hardware adjustments? Here are some tips based on my experience of tuning different TVs.

What picture mode to choose (standard/dynamic/cinema)? On the absolute majority of TV sets the most correct mode is Cinema/Cinema. Don’t use the “Dynamic” viewing mode, it always gives a false image because of the non-linear gamma, and the brightness is too high, making it hard on the eyes, especially if you watch TV in a dimly lit or dark place.

Which color temperature mode to choose (cool/standard/warm)? On the vast majority of TV sets the Warmest mode is the closest to the standard color temperature (6500K). If there is a choice of Warm1/Warm2 (on Samsung TVs), determine for yourself which one is better. Usually it is Warm2, but there can be exceptions.

What settings are recommended to turn off to get the best picture? You must disable all settings that adjust brightness/contrast at the discretion of the TV. That is, you should turn off “dynamic contrast”, “power saving mode”, “light sensor”, “dynamic backlighting” and not use “Dynamic” image mode.

How to set the “contrast” parameter correctly? In fact, it is not correct to call this parameter “contrast”, because the contrast. is the ratio of the maximum brightness of the white field (white level) to the black level (the minimum luminance level of the panel). So, the parameter “contrast” in the TV menu changes exactly the white level, that is, the level of maximum brightness of the image.

For plasmas:. It is best to adjust the “contrast” setting in the dark;

Samsung plasma TVs have a parameter “cell brightness” (cell light), which has a great influence on the overall picture brightness. You can immediately set it to a value close to the maximum (18-20), and then follow the recommendations.

LCD TVs are set up a little differently. They have a “backlight brightness” parameter (sometimes called “backlight contrast”), which has the greatest impact on overall picture brightness.

I do not recommend using the maximum values of the “contrast” parameter, because some TV sets have non-linear color temperatures when set to the maximum value. Excessively bright picture (and for the real brightness in the TV are responsible “contrast” / “brightness of the backlight”) strains your vision and leads to eye fatigue, remember this when you adjust these parameters.

How to set the Brightness setting correctly? The parameter “brightness” defines the black level. To set it in the right position you can use the special image “Pluge pattern”. In the image the leftmost vertical line corresponds to black. To adjust the “brightness” parameter to the desired position, first increase it until you see all the bars clearly, then decrease the “brightness” parameter until the leftmost vertical bar fades into the background. In addition, you can use special setup disks, such as AVSHD (link at the end of this article), where in the “Basic Settings” section you will find the necessary images to set the basic TV parameters ( ).
