A new way to turn on your Samsung phone’s screen: when you lift.

It is nice to have a reliable friend who understands you in half a word.

It turns out that smartphones, having a full range of all kinds of sensors in their arsenal, in some cases have begun to “understand” their owner. For example, the phone activates its screen as soon as you take it in your hands, or does not allow the display to go out for as long as you look at it. And such obliging innovations with the release of new series of smartphones becomes more and more.

Design and usability

Galaxy A70 is designed for users who want a smartphone with a very large display. It is a large device, difficult to operate with one hand, and it is not very comfortable to carry in a jeans But thanks to the rounded back cover, the smartphone is relatively comfortable in the hand, it’s graspable, and thanks to the use of plastic as the main body material, it’s not slippery.

The plastic case has both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, in a gadget for almost 500 one would like to see metal or glass, but the device does not look cheap. You can distinguish Samsung 3D Glasstic from the glass only tactilely, visually the materials are very similar, and since the smartphone immediately after purchase most people hide it in a case, there is virtually no difference. The advantage of plastic is that in the unfortunate fall of the smartphone you will not get to the expensive repair of the cracked back cover. Minus. the case is a real necessity, since the body, especially in black, very quickly gets noticeable scratches and scuffs.

For colors: the device is offered in four colors. black, white, blue and coral, but the last one is not officially available in Russia. All colors are made with the effect of gradient, in our case black is like an oil slick, shimmering in the light of all the shades of the rainbow.

The entire front panel is occupied by a huge 6.7-inch display with a teardrop-shaped cutout for the front. The frames around the screen, including the chin, are thin, in this parameter A70 surpasses even most of the Chinese flagships. Over the front camera is a speaker, next to it. proximity and light sensors. As in all models of the A-series in the 70th does not have the LED-notification indicator, its function is taken over by Always On Display.

The vertically arranged main camera array holds three modules, under which is the LED flash, it protrudes only slightly beyond the body and does not interfere with the use of lying on the table phone.

Samsung Galaxy A70 does not differ from its counterparts in the placement of buttons and ports. At the top there is a hole for the noise cancelling microphone, and at the bottom there is a headphone jack, Type-C port, loudspeaker and talking microphone.

On the left end we find a card slot, and not a stingy hybrid tray, but a full-fledged one that can accommodate 2 sim cards and a separate MiscroSD card. The power and volume keys are on the right side. The smartphone is perfectly assembled, the back cover does not sag, the body does not make any noise when you squeeze it.

Samsung Galaxy A70 smartphone review

Having revised its policy regarding the budget smartphone lines and putting them in order, the Korean company Samsung gave the market a slender and logical series of smartphones Galaxy A, which clearly shows an increase in the level of features with each successive serial number. On the market, these models are introduced slowly, in the order of their technical advancement. Only when the Galaxy A10, A20, A30, A40 and A50 were already on sale, they were followed by even more interesting Galaxy A70 and A80. Looks and usability

Samsung Galaxy A70 is a huge-sized smartphone, at first there was even a special name for them, tablets (phablets), but then all the smartphones were so big that the specific term disappeared by itself. And yet, even by today’s standards, the Galaxy A70 is a giant: it’s hard to grasp because of its large width, your finger can only reach the middle of the screen, so it’s quite a tablet.

The current fashion for framelessness (or rather for a thin frame around the screen, which, of course, has not disappeared completely) allowed to fit here a huge display with a diagonal of 6.7 inches, and modern technology made it possible to thin the body to the point that even such a giant began to look, in general, graceful and attractive.

The cameras on the back almost do not protrude beyond the surface, the smartphone lies on the table steadily, does not wiggle when you touch the screen. The back is made of glossy plastic under glass and has a mirrored backing that reflects the rays of light, but has no gradient color transitions.

And it’s even better: the frivolity of multicolored smartphones like Huawei is leaving, to be replaced by a serious, impressive beauty and maturity. The device looks strict and solid, it’s not ashamed to take it out of the of an expensive jacket, and in general, Galaxy A70 looks more expensive than its price, and it’s great.

However, in terms of practicality there are certain claims. The rear wall here is not slippery and is not instantly covered with fingerprints, but the side frame, which is also not made of metal, turned out to be quite slippery. It would be good to put such a smartphone in a protective case, but you don’t want to make it look even bigger with such a huge size

At the top of the screen is present drop-shaped cutout for a camera, at a minimum taking space away from the display, and this is the most successful option today. With it and the very thin bezel, the display takes up about 86% of the entire front surface area.

The hardware buttons are large, smooth, no difference in texture. It’s quite deep and has an excellent tactile response. Taking into account the fact that both keys are competently placed, on one side, and on the second side there is no third key to call the virtual assistant, there are no complaints about the hardware buttons at all.

The fingerprint scanner here, unfortunately, is new-fangled, under-screen, and it’s a real pain. Not only is it slow, but it has more false positives than the others. The device does not have a finger of the hand holding the smartphone, it is difficult to reach it: the thumb does not bend, and if it does, the smartphone is not securely held, you constantly have to free your other hand for manipulation. If you carry a bag or hold on to the handrail on the subway, you start having problems.

Two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card can be inserted simultaneously in the side tray. Given the built-in storage capacity of 128 GB, you will not have to save memory.

The bottom end has a speaker, a microphone, a USB Type-C connector and a 3.5mm audio output for headphones. On the top end there is only an additional microphone.

Samsung Galaxy A70 on our market is available in three colors: blue, black and white. Full protection against dust and moisture smartphone does not have.

Screen

Samsung Galaxy A70 is equipped with an AMOLED-display with a diagonal of 6.67 inches and a resolution of 2400×1080, covered by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Physical size is 70×155 mm, the screen is huge. The aspect ratio is 20:9, the dot density is 393 ppi. The width of the frame around the screen is: 3 mm on the sides and top, 5 mm at the bottom. With such a huge area of the display itself, the frame really seems insignificant.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-reflective properties of the screen are slightly better than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereafter simply Nexus 7). For illustration, here is a photo of the white surface reflected in the turned off screens (Nexus 7 on the left, Samsung Galaxy A70 on the right, you can distinguish them further by their size):

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy A70 is slightly darker (luminance in the photo is 113 compared to 115 on the Nexus 7) and has no distinctive tint. Doubling of reflected objects in the Samsung Galaxy A70 screen is very weak, indicating that there is no air gap between the screen layers. Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, screens without an air gap look better in conditions of intense external light, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, as it is necessary to change the entire screen. The outer surface of the Samsung Galaxy A70 screen has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, much better than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear with less speed than in the case of conventional glass.

When displaying the white field throughout the screen and with manual brightness control its maximum value was only 350 cd/m² in normal conditions, but in very bright light it goes up to 550 cd/m². Also we should take into account the fact that in this case the less white area on the screen, the brighter it is, i.e. the actual maximum brightness of the white areas will almost always be higher than the specified value. As a result, daytime readability of the screen in sunlight should be good. The minimum value is 1.8 cd/m², That is, the reduced brightness level without problems allows you to use the device even in complete darkness. Automatic brightness adjustment by light sensor (located under the plane of the screen to the right of the front camera) works. In automatic mode, the brightness of the screen both increases and decreases as ambient light conditions change. This function depends on the position of the brightness control slider: it allows the user to try to set the desired brightness level in the current environment. If you leave it set to default, then in total darkness the Auto Brightness function reduces the brightness to 8 cd/m² (a little dark), under artificial light in the office (about 550 lux) sets it to 140 cd/m² (normal), and conventionally under direct sunlight increases to 550 cd/m². We weren’t quite satisfied with the result, so in total darkness we slightly increased the brightness and ended up with the following values for the three conditions above: 25, 125 and 550 cd/m² (the ideal combination). It turns out that the brightness auto-adjustment function works adequately and to some extent allows the user to adjust its performance to individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is significant modulation with a frequency of 60 or 240 Hz. The figure below shows the luminance (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) for several values of the luminance setting:

You can see that at maximum (as 100% we designated the mode with additional illumination of the brightness sensor) and medium brightness the amplitude of modulation is not very large, as a result there is no visible flickering. However, with a strong decrease in brightness appears modulation with a large relative amplitude, its presence can already be seen in the test for the presence of the stroboscopic effect or simply with the rapid movement of the eyes. Depending on individual sensitivity, such flicker can cause increased fatigue. However, the phase of the modulation varies by zone, so the negative effect of flicker is reduced.

This screen uses an AMOLED (Dynamic AMOLED) active matrix on organic LEDs. A full color image is created using subpixels of three colors red (R), green (G) and blue (B), but the red and blue subpixels are halved, which can be designated as RGBG. This is confirmed by a fragment of the microphotograph:

For comparison, you can see a gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

In the fragment above you can see 4 green sub-pixels, 2 red sub-pixels (4 halves) and 2 blue sub-pixels (1 whole and 4 quarters) and by repeating these fragments you can lay out the whole screen without breaking or overlapping. For such matrices, Samsung has introduced the name PenTile RGBG. The manufacturer counts the resolution of the screen on green sub-pixels, on the other two it will be half as much. There is some unevenness of contrast lines and other artifacts, but because of the high resolution they only minimally affect the image quality.

The screen is characterized by excellent viewing angles. To tell the truth, white color acquires alternately light blue-green or pinkish tint when deflected even on small angles, but black color stays simply black at any angles. It is so black that the contrast parameter does not apply in this case. Let’s compare these pictures which show the same images on the screens of Samsung Galaxy A70 (Color saturated profile) and the second participant of the comparison, the brightness of the screens on the white field was initially set to approximately 200 cd/m², and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K.

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field (except for the barely visible darkening and the change of hue towards the bent edges).

And a test picture (Natural color profile):

Color rendering is good, colors are moderately saturated, the color balance of the screens slightly different. Remember that a picture cannot be a reliable source of information about color rendering quality and is only shown for illustrative purposes. In particular, the pronounced reddish tint of the white and gray fields, present in the photos of the Samsung Galaxy A70 screen, is visually absent when viewed perpendicularly, as confirmed by hardware tests using a spectrophotometer. The reason is that the spectral sensitivity of the camera matrix does not exactly match this characteristic of human vision.

The photo above was obtained after selecting the Natural colors profile in the screen settings, there are two of them in total:

The first thing to do is to turn on the Natural colors profile and forget about the existence of the second one. But let’s see what happens if we choose the Rich Colors profile:

The saturation is greatly increased, it looks terrible.

Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen (Color Saturation profile).

The brightness decreased markedly at an angle on both screens (the shutter speed was slower in comparison to the previous pictures to avoid too much darkening), but in case of Samsung the drop of brightness is less pronounced. As a result, with formally the same brightness Samsung Galaxy A70 screen visually looks brighter (compared to LCD screens), because you often have to look at the mobile device screen at least at a small angle.

You can see that the colors have not changed much in both screens and the brightness of the Samsung smartphone is noticeably higher at an angle.

Matrix elements switch almost instantly, but there may be a step of about 17 ms at the turn-on front (which corresponds to the screen refresh rate of 60 Hz). For example, the dependence of brightness on time during the transition from black to white and vice versa looks like this:

In some conditions the presence of such a step can (and does) lead to plumes stretching behind moving objects. However, the dynamic scenes in the movies on OLED screens still have high definition and even some jerkiness of movements.

Constructed on 32 points at regular intervals by the numerical value of grayscale gamma curve showed that there is no significant dip neither in light nor in shade. The index of the approximating power function is 2.05, which is slightly less than the standard value of 2.2, and the real gamma curve slightly deviates from the power dependence:

Recall that in the case of OLED screens, the brightness of image fragments dynamically changes in accordance with the nature of the displayed image decreases for light in general images. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma-curve), most likely, does not correspond to the gamma-curve of a static image, because measurements were carried out with consecutive output of grayscale almost all over the screen.

The color gamut of the saturated color profile is very wide in blue and green, wider than DCI-P3:

If you select the Natural colors profile, the coverage is compressed to the sRGB boundaries:

Without correction (the saturated colors profile), the component spectra are very well separated:

In the case of the Natural colors profile, the color components are already noticeably blended in with each other:

Note that on screens with a wide color gamut (without the appropriate correction), the colors of ordinary images optimized for sRGB devices look unnaturally saturated. So here’s a recommendation: in most cases you should look at movies, photos and everything natural with the Natural colors profile, and only if your picture or video material is shot with DCI digital grayscale, it makes sense to switch to the Rich colors profile.

Tone balance on the grayscale is acceptable. The color temperature after selecting the Natural Color profile is close to 6500K, with not much change in grayscale in a significant area, improving the visual perception of color balance. Deviation from Spectra perfectly black body (ΔE) on most of the grayscale remains below 10 units, which for a consumer device is considered a good indicator:

(In most cases, you can ignore the darkest grayscale areas, because the color balance is not very important there, and the measurement error of the color characteristics at low brightness is big.)

For some reason, it is only with the Rich colors profile that you can adjust the color balance by adjusting color temperature and three intensities of primary colors, but because of too wide color gamut it makes no sense to adjust the balance in this profile.

There is a trendy Blue Light Filter function, for which there is even a more or less correct description in the settings:

Why such correction can be useful, told in the article about the iPad Pro 9.7″. In any case, when entertaining with the tablet or smartphone at night, it is better to reduce the brightness of the screen to a minimum, but still comfortable level. There is no point in yellowing the screen with the Blue Light Filter setting.

Let’s summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-reflective properties, so you can use the device without much trouble outdoors even on a summer sunny day. In complete darkness, you can lower the brightness to a comfortable value. It is possible to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen should include an effective oleophobic coating, as well as close to sRGB color gamut (when choosing the correct profile) and acceptable color balance. At the same time let’s remind about the general advantages of OLED-screens: a true black color (if the screen is not reflected), significantly less than in the LCD, the brightness drop when you look at an angle. The disadvantages can include a modulation of brightness of the screen. Users, who are particularly sensitive to flicker, this can cause increased fatigue. Nevertheless, the overall quality of the screen is very high.

Camera

The front camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels and a lens aperture of f/2.0. The default it shoots 21 megapixels (how to enable 32 megapixels is another guess), and this, honestly, greatly overstated resolution, lack of detail in the face (especially hair) is noticeable even in the daytime under the sun, and certainly indoors you can safely take pictures of a maximum size of 8 megapixels. Nevertheless, if you do not pick on the detail, the selfies camera gives the correct color reproduction, the dynamic range is also not a complaint. When blurring the background, the program can miss and cut off the top of the hair or, on the contrary, leave a part of the complex multicolored background sharp, but this is typical and probably forgivable for today. In general, on the screen of the smartphone pictures look decent.

open, samsung

Rear camera consists of three modules. The main one here is the 32 megapixel module with a lens with an aperture of f/1.7. It has PDAF phase autofocus and a pretty bright flash. Next to it is a wide-angle (123 degree) module with an 8 megapixel sensor with a lens aperture of f/2.2, as well as a depth sensor (5 megapixel sensor, lens aperture of f/2.2). There’s a dedicated button on the viewfinder screen for switching between the main and wide-angle cameras, which is handy.

The wide angle module is surprisingly good: you shouldn’t expect miracles from it, but it won’t ruin the picture you need such an angle for, and that, even in comparison with the current flagships, is not a small thing. Of course, there are complaints about the details of the module (especially closer to the edges of the picture), and the perspective distortion, and the night shots on it get very weak. And yet it does the job.

Awkwardly realized switching resolution: quite difficult to guess that you need to click on one of several small icons above the viewfinder, then select from a number of exactly 3:4H, to suddenly start shooting at 32 megapixels. Why can’t you display a visual resolution selection in the general settings list, called by clicking on the gear icon, as it was always done before?

32-megapixel shots are expectedly not striking clarity, but they are still more detailed and less ruined by processing. For example, the 12-megapixel images in comparison show an increase in contour sharpness, which is still not enough to make the frames come out sharp The image is constantly sooty, fuzzy. So if your priority is quality, it makes sense to shoot at 32 megapixels here.
