Basic actions

Phone setup is divided into two stages. The most important cannot be missed. it is performed when the device is first turned on and after each reset to factory settings. The following actions are usually performed here:

  • Language is selected;
  • Wi-Fi network is selected;
  • Turns on or off mobile data transmission;
  • Data from a Google account is entered;
  • The current date and time is confirmed.

Sometimes this whole thing is complemented by the input of data from other accounts. Samsung, Cyanogenmod and others. So let’s take a closer look at the initial setup process:

Usually, setting up a phone starts with choosing a language, which is logical. You will be offered a list of languages supported by this version of the operating system, from which you need to choose the one that you understand. In our case, it will be Russian. After selecting it, click the “Next” button, which in this case is depicted as an arrow.

Usually the next step is to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Choose the one that is home to you. You can also skip this step by clicking the Next button. But this is recommended only if a SIM card is inserted into the smartphone with a connected mobile Internet.

Enter the password for your home Wi-Fi network and click the “Connect” button.

It is quite possible that the connection check will start next. It is possible that the device will also provide an opportunity to update the firmware. Also, the smartphone may offer to transfer data from another device running Android. This is done using an NFC chip. If you do not need this, click the “Skip” button.

Full use of your smartphone is impossible without creating a Google account. It is most logical to enter data from the account that you used on your previous device. If you do not have such an account yet, then click on “Or create a new account”. It is not recommended to skip this step, as otherwise the Play Market will not work for you.

Enter your Gmail e-mail address, click the “Next” button, after which all you have to do is enter your password, then click the aforementioned button again.

Click the Accept button. By doing so, you agree to Google’s privacy policy.

Next, the system will offer you to download the applications that were installed on your previous smartphone. To do this, select the brand of the device you used, mark the programs you need (you can leave a checkmark next to the “All applications” item) and click the “Next” button.

The system will prompt you to activate Google services. It is recommended to leave ticks next to all items and click the “Next” button.

Then the system can acquaint you with the main elements of the interface. Just press the “OK” button.

Wait for the download and installation of all applications that were used on the previous smartphone. This can be a lengthy process.

This completes the initial setup. It should be noted that the completeness of your actions will differ depending on the manufacturer of the device. Our example only deals with the bare version of the operating system. If you have a device from Samsung, LG or some other company, then you may be offered additional actions. For example, you may need to set the time and date, create an account in additional services, and activate a place in Dropbox or other cloud hosting.

Second phase

In fact, we have come to the point where the smartphone can already be used. But if you want to achieve maximum comfort, then it is better to continue tuning. In particular, you’re not going to manually type in all the contacts, are you? It is much easier to transfer them from your previous smartphone using the corresponding function from Google. How this is done is described in full detail in a separate article. If you repeated all the steps described above, then the entries should have already appeared in the contact book. if you, of course, have access to the global web.

Next, you can set up your email. The Gmail email address itself will already be hammered into the settings of the corresponding application. But you may have other email addresses, including those from Yandex and. They can also be added to the Gmail app. To do this, run the program and do the following:

Pull out the curtain with the main menu from the left edge. Or just click on the three horizontal bars in the upper right corner.

Management and self-maintenance

Modern smartphones on Android, for the most part, are delivered to the market with internal memory up to 16 gigabytes. In this case, the user, as a rule, has about 10 gigabytes available. It would seem a very solid volume.

But many Android device owners love to install a variety of applications, so in the end, the internal memory of the smartphone is completely clogged. You can remove some unnecessary programs, but the rest of the most necessary, for example, social networks, maps and navigators, will still take up a lot of space. The solution to the problem can be installing applications on a memory card that is placed in an Android phone.

How to install applications on a memory card Android 6.0-7.0

The ability to install or save an application to a memory card appeared only in the sixth version of Android. Marshmallow. The developers have created a feature called Adoptable storage that helps make friends between a reliable internal storage and an unreliable external card.

The adaptive storage feature allows you to format your memory card so that Android sees it as part of a single system partition. This happens using the Ext4 file system and 128-bit AES encryption. Smartphone memory becomes more capacious, and you can use absolutely any memory card.

Experts recommend using high-speed cards labeled Class 10 and UHS-I Speed Class 3. Adapting memory cards has one significant pitfall. The map becomes part of one system, in fact, part of Android itself. Accordingly, if you delete it, there is a risk of losing all applications and data that are stored on it.

If you installed a card from an old one on your new phone, be sure to check it for malware using a special anti-virus utility. You can choose the most reliable one for yourself using our article about the best antivirus program on Android.

Fly’s training course: Become your Android smartphone guru in 6 steps. How do I install applications on an Android memory stick? What you need to know when installing applications on a memory card

It is easy to see that practically all Android applications are installed into the smartphone’s memory after downloading. This is explained by the fact that the memory card is a very unreliable place to install and save programs on it. And that’s why:

  • Data on the memory card is stored without encryption
  • A poor-quality card can disrupt the operation of not only an individual application, but the entire system.
  • Removing a memory card can result in losing all applications installed on it.
  • A breakdown of the memory card also leads to the fact that the user loses data.

Removing an application can be as troublesome as installing it. The fact is that during standard deletion, so-called junk or temporary files remain in the smartphone’s memory. Accumulated traces of old applets clog the smartphone’s memory and reduce its performance. To solve this problem, read our material on how to remove a program from Android once and for all.

Features of older versions of Android when using an SD card

Throughout the history of the Android operating system, three large periods of deciding how to install applications on an Android memory card can be traced:

  • Android 1.1. Android 2.2 Froyo
  • Android 2.2 Froyo. Android 4.2 KitKat
  • Android 4.2 KitKat. Android 6.0

Prior to Android 2.2 Froyo, there was no way to install, save or transfer applications to a memory card at all. On technical forums, one could find several purely hacker methods, but only advanced users could use them.

Starting with Android 2.2, developers have allowed installation and transfer of applications, as well as saving to a memory card. To do this, it was enough to find the Applications item in the operating system settings and set the storage location.

At the same time, various programs appeared that could be downloaded for free on Google Play, allowing you to transfer already installed applications to a memory card. But such utilities required the assignment of root rights, so not all users could cope with this task.

When developing an update for Android 4.4 KitKat, Google specialists took serious care of data security and rewrote the protection algorithm. The function of installing, saving and transferring installed applications to the card, in general, was blocked. SD-memory card on Android has become exclusively a place for storing photos, videos and other content.

Developers could make updates to one or another program to bypass Android security systems and save programs to the card. Until the end, this did not solve the problem of installing, transferring and storing applications.

How Adoptable storage works

In order to understand the principle of the adaptive storage function, we will analyze step by step all the main steps:

  • Insert a memory card into your phone
  • A dialog box for configuring the memory card will appear. Here the system will offer to choose one of two settings: portable memory or internal memory
  • Choosing internal memory for storing data (applications, files, and so on)
  • The card must be formatted to protect data. If there are important files on the card, you will need to back them up
  • Go to Android settings and select the “Storage and USB drives” section. If all the previous steps were performed correctly, you will see your card in the list of drives.

The adaptive storage feature is just one of the few features that are out of sight. To find out what your smartphone is really capable of, read our article Hidden features of Android.

Please note that from the very beginning you will not be able to install the application on the memory card by downloading it from Google Play. By default, it will automatically install to the internal memory of your Android smartphone. However, by setting up the memory card as internal storage, you can transfer and save programs on it. To do this, you need to perform a number of simple steps:

  • Enter Android settings and select Applications
  • Select the application you want to transfer to the memory card
  • In the program settings, click on the Storage item
  • Here click on the Change button
  • Select SD card and click Move

After a few seconds, the selected program will be transferred to the memory card. Please note that if you remove the card from your phone, you will lose access to the application. If you still need to remove the card, follow all the steps above and assign the storage location to the internal drive. Now you know how to install applications directly to a memory card. And you can tell about your successes in the comments to this article.

Wherever you install applications, on a card or phone memory, over time, the system starts to slow down due to the large amount of accumulated files in system folders. To keep your device running fast, read our guide on how to improve the performance of your Android phone.
