How to connect your phone to a WI-FI router

The phone doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi. The Internet does not work. Why and what to do?

On modern phones, the ability to make calls on a cell phone, it’s just one of the functions. And for many, this function is not the most popular. What we mostly do on a smartphone? We watch videos, sit on social networks, chat in messengers, browse the sites, play, etc. д., And for that we need an internet connection. And when the phone doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi, and mobile Internet is very slow, expensive or not available at all, it’s a real tragedy. Phone without Internet, as well as the computer is not clear why we need it

I may be exaggerating a bit, but that’s pretty much it. All phones that run on Android (Samsung, Lenovo, Huawei, Xiaomi, Sony, Asus, Meizu and others) and iOS (Apple iPhone) require an Internet connection. At least for settings, software and system updates, syncing, etc. д. I don’t have a problem with that right now. Almost every house has a Wi-Fi router, which gives out a wireless network. There are open neighborhood Wi-Fi networks, and plenty of open networks from shopping malls, cafes, stores, and other establishments. Even the subway, trains, buses and planes have Wi-Fi. It is possible to remain always online even without mobile internet.

But very often the phone just does not want to connect to Wi-Fi. Such problems don’t just occur with open, public networks (where, as a rule, the problem is on the side of the network itself). But also with home Wi-Fi. Usually there is a problem with connection to one specific network. And sometimes the smartphone just works with the router, then disconnects from it and never connects again. Or it refuses to connect after replacing the router, some settings, installing programs, etc. д.

We will be looking at solutions for Android phones. If you have an iPhone, see the article iPhone or iPad can not connect to Wi-Fi and what to do if the iPhone (iPad) does not see Wi-Fi.

How to connect a cell phone to WI-FI and the Internet

You have a phone or tablet with the Android operating system and a modem with WI-FI? You want to connect to WI-FI on your phone and surf the Internet, but the phone can not connect to the network? Getting IP address is always on when trying to connect? The phone says that WI-FI network is connected, but the Internet cannot be accessed?

Let’s see how you can solve this problem. Most of today’s smartphones, communicators and tablets run the Android operating system. We will be dealing with Android 4.0.3.

By default in the wireless network settings, getting the settings is automatic, but this option is not always suitable. For such cases, it is possible to manually specify the IP address, DNS and gateway.

Go to the settings of the phone as indicated by the arrow in the picture. For tablets and cell phones with another Android version the process of entering the settings may be slightly different, but I think it is not difficult to understand.

Once clicked, you will see the tabs: Wallpaper, Apps and Settings. Go to Settings.

As you can notice in the picture below. WI-FI is on. Press on the place indicated with a red arrow to display the available access points (modems with Wi-Fi) to which you can connect. Among them, we will see your network.

To register the DNS servers, IP address and gateway it is necessary to disconnect from the WI-FI. To do this, click on the name of the WI-FI network, in my case it is Dlink.

Next, enter all the necessary data and only then connect to the WI-FI.

After clicking on the network, the network settings will open. Here you can see the signal strength, connection speed, network security and a field for entering the password.

The picture below shows the steps from the first to the fourth point to complete.

  • Maintain WI-FI password. This is the key you enter in the settings of your modem or router when configuring WI-FI. If you have an open network, you will not have to enter the password.
  • To open advanced network settings, put a checkmark in front of the word Advanced, as shown in the picture below. After checking the box, you will see the following items: Proxy Settings and IP Settings, DHCP.
  • Next, click on DHCP.
  • This will bring up an additional tab, click on Advanced.

In the IP address field: 192.168.1.7 or 192.168.0.7.

The last digit of the IP-address (in my case I wrote a seven) may be different, and the other digits should match those used to access your router.

If you enter this data on two or more devices, the last digit of the IP address must be different for each device.

If you want to take care of your safety, fast and stable speed or just set up the phone for a child, it is better to specify safe Yandex DNS.

How to connect Wi-Fi on an Android phone

In order to connect Wi-Fi on your Android phone, you need to open the settings and turn on the Wi-Fi module. This is done using the blue switch that is located in front of the Wi-Fi section. If you already have Wi-Fi turned on, just skip this step.

Once Wi-Fi is enabled, you need to open the list of available Wi-Fi networks. To do this, simply click on the Wi-Fi label to the left of the switch you just turned on. After the list of available Wi-Fi networks opens, click on the network you need.

If the network you have selected is not password-protected, the connection will occur immediately after selecting the network. If the network is secured, you will see a small window where you will need to enter.

If the password you entered is correct, your phone will connect to Wi-Fi.

Turning on Wi-Fi on your Android

To set up the wireless internet, you must first start the Wi-Fi module. This is done by clicking on the wireless connection icon in the notification bar in the status bar. Swipe the screen from top to bottom, select the icon in the right corner, among the icons that will appear, find the Wi-Fi icon and press on it.

If for some reason you cannot use this scheme, enable access in the settings menu. Go to Settings → Wireless Networks → Wi-Fi → Enable.

If you enabled access through the settings menu, go to the Wi-Fi menu opposite the enable slider, and then you will see the possible connections. Perform the above operations.

Follow these steps to set up your phone to connect to the new network. If you are within range of a remembered connection, the device will be able to connect you automatically.

If you use Wi-Fi mostly at home you can set up the Internet directly through your router. There is a button of secure communication WPS, which allows you to connect any device via an encrypted signal. To use this feature you need

  • Go to Settings → Wireless Networks → Wi-Fi, click on the icon in the form of two circular arrows.
  • The system prompts you to press the WPS button on the router. Make this requirement.
  • After a while the connection will be established.

This method is relevant only at home, because you do not have to enter the password every time. Of course you will not use it in a cafe or a store.

If phone does not see network

In many cases, when connected to a router, your mobile device cannot see the network. To fix it you first need to restart your router. Next you need to go to the phone settings and perform the actions that directly depend on the age of the smartphone. If your device is old then you need to open the wireless networks section, otherwise you can use the express panel and click on the corresponding icon.

The next step is to manually search for a wireless network (if the system does not automatically detect it). To do this, you will need to add a network using the appropriate button and enter the name of the network in the field that appears. Eventually the smartphone will connect to an invisible wireless network.

When a Wi-Fi hotspot is active, you can connect other Wi-Fi enabled devices to it by entering the hotspot’s SSID, choosing a security type, and entering the correct password.

No professional skills are required. If you are too lazy to do all these manipulations yourself, ask any schoolboy who will be at hand. He probably knows how to handle your question.

And you should start getting a better understanding of your own smartphone. You didn’t buy it just to make calls, did you?? Otherwise you would have bought a basic phone instead of a smartphone. Yeah, it’s a different device. Would you like an article on the subject? Write your answers in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев.

Your Android phone can’t connect to Wi-Fi: Causes and solutions

Trivial, but still sometimes it happens: check whether the router is off, whether the WI-FI icon is lit on it, whether all the cables are tightly in their sockets, whether the phone is not switched to air mode. If everything is ok, check exactly what kind of connection problem you are having.

Wi-Fi is connected, but says “no internet access”

  • The router is really not connected to the network or is malfunctioning. It needs to be restarted. you can ask the staff to do it, if it’s a restaurant or cafe. Or do it yourself: it is recommended to disconnect the power cord for 2-3 minutes, checking at the same time if the Internet and Ethernet cables are tightly plugged into their s.
  • You are too far away from the router, and it simply “does not reach” your device. Try to move. If you are at home, put the router somewhere else. perhaps there is an obstacle to the signal.
  • You have not finished connecting to the network. In many public networks, a mandatory requirement is the authentication of the user on a special page that comes out after you press the “connect” button. You may not have allowed the page to open. If so, find the network in the list of available networks, click on it and select “Delete”. Reconnect and wait for the start page to open, where you will need to enter your phone number and the password that comes with it. If the page does not open automatically, access the default web browser on the phone and try any page. you should see a login window.
  • Date and time settings on your phone are incorrect. Check the settings, enter the correct data.
  • There is a problem with the IP address. Go to the list of networks and click on the one you need with a long press. Select “Change Network” then “Advanced Settings”. Here set the IP setting to “custom” and enter 192.168.1.X (where X1) (make sure these details fit you by looking at the label on your router. The IP address of the user is listed there. The phone address will be the same numbers except for the last one. choose it to your liking.)
  • It is possible that in spite of the free network, the Internet is only distributed to certain administrator IP / MAC addresses of devices, ie.е. You will not be able to connect without knowing the administrator.
  • It is possible that your connection is blocked by a “security software”: firewall or antivirus. Try to turn them off.

Phone does not connect to Wi-Fi, but computer is connected

This tells us that the problem is not with the router or ISP, but with the device itself. Although, it may be that the connection channel is clogged and the router just can not pull a large number of devices. Try to switch off Internet on your computer or laptop and connect only from your phone.

The easiest way to solve the problem: Reboot your phone. If that does not help remove your network. To do this, go to the list of available WI-FI, by long pressing on the screen next to the name of your network, bring up a list that opens and click “delete this network” (optional: “forget network”). Together with it all settings will be deleted: remembered IP-address, DNS and other settings. Then find again the network you need and connect to it by entering the password.

If this does not help, find item “Reset mobile internet, WI-FI, Bluetooth settings” in “Settings” of your phone. It can be located in section “System” or in “Additional functions”. Reset your settings, reboot your phone and try to connect again.

All in vain? Download an antivirus app on your phone and check it. Malware can intentionally block internet access or break access due to certain settings.

It says “saved” but no connection, authentication error

If you’re trying to connect to a public network in a restaurant or airport, for example, the explanation could be very simple and frustrating for you: the router’s connection limit is simply exhausted, it can’t handle the number of devices attacking it, eager to get online. This often happens in crowded places: at parties, concerts. Any channel has a limit, and to feed the phones of thousands of insatiable users can be difficult. Or an old router is installed and the phone simply does not support its settings. To solve the problem in this case is difficult, you have to wait or look for another network.

Also, the public network may be password-protected and you do not know it or enter it incorrectly. Try to talk to local employees, maybe they will tell you the secret, even if it is not a public network for all customers.

If it is a home network, this error could mean that the router is freezing. In this case, it can be resuscitated by simply pressing the Reset button or by unplugging it for a couple of minutes.

If the error repeats, enter the router settings through the computer (entering the IP address of the device in the address bar of the browser), check that the encryption type WPA-2 is selected, DHCP server is enabled. And yes, make sure the password is correct. on the router and on the phone. Even if you think you remember it by heart, and that can’t be a problem. Sometimes, during the dialing process an error can occur and you will not even know which character is in it: just change the password and try to log in again.

Check also the date, time and region settings on the phone and router. If they do not match, they can cause devices to block each other.

Says “getting an ip-address, ip-configuration error”

This problem, which occurs not infrequently, indicates that your router does not communicate with the mobile device. The problem may be in your router or in your phone.

First of all, without any cunning, simply restart the router: take out the network cable for 2-3 minutes, then turn it on again.

If that does not help, then manually write the IP on the phone. It is easy to know what to write: look at the label on your router, it’s there. To enter the settings, go to the list of networks, delete the existing connection. Click again on the connection, but do not enter a password, and select “advanced settings”. Click on “IP settings” and select the sub-item custom.
