Setting up a picture on a TV from a PC in Windows 10

For your computer, the connected TV is just a second monitor, respectively, and all settings are made in the monitor parameters. In Windows 10, you can make the necessary settings as follows:

  • Go to Settings (Start. gear icon or WinI keys).
  • Select the options “System”. “Display”. Here you will see two connected monitors. To find out the number of each of the connected screens (they may not correspond to how you placed them and in what order you connected them) press the “Define” button (as a result, the corresponding numbers will appear on the monitor and TV).

  • If the location does not match the actual location, you can drag one of the monitors to the right or left in the options (i.e. change their order to match the actual location). This is relevant only if you use the “Expand screens” mode, about which later.
  • An important parameter item is located just below and is entitled “Multiple Displays”. Here you can set how exactly two screens work in a pair: Duplicate these screens (identical images with an important limitation: both can only have the same resolution), Extend the desktop (two screens will have a different image, one will be a continuation of the other, the pointer the mouse will move from the edge of one screen to the other, when positioned correctly), Display on one screen only.

In general, the setting can be considered complete at this point, unless you need to make sure that the correct resolution is set for the TV (i.e. the physical resolution of the TV screen), the resolution is adjusted after selecting a specific screen in the display settings of Windows 10. How to connect a TV to a computer

The idea of connecting a computer or laptop to a TV can be quite reasonable if, for example, you often watch movies stored on your hard drive, play games, want to use the TV as a second monitor, and in many other cases. By and large, connecting TV as a second monitor of a computer or laptop (or as the main one) for most modern TV models is not a problem.

In this article, I will talk in detail about how to connect a computer to a TV via HDMI, VGA or DVI, about the different types of inputs and outputs that are most often used when connecting a TV, what cables or adapters may be required, as well as about the settings. Windows 10, 8.1 and Windows 7, with which you can adjust the various picture modes from your computer to your TV. Below are the options for a wired connection, if you need it without wires, then the instruction is here: How to connect a TV to a computer via Wi-Fi. Connect your computer to your TV

I want to warn you that this action is best done by completely turning off the TV and computer (including unplugging it from the outlet), otherwise, although not very likely, damage to the equipment due to electrical discharges is possible. Connect the required connectors on the computer and TV, and then turn on both. On the TV, select the appropriate video input signal. HDMI, VGA, PC, AV. If necessary, read the instructions for the TV.

Note: If you are connecting the TV to a PC with a discrete graphics card, then you may notice that there are two locations of video output connectors on the back of the computer. on the video card and on the motherboard. I recommend connecting the TV in the same location where the monitor is connected.

If everything was done correctly, then, most likely, the TV screen will start showing the same as the computer monitor (it may not start, but this can be solved). If the monitor is not connected, it will only show TV.

Despite the fact that the TV is already connected, you will most likely encounter the fact that the image on one of the screens (if there are two of them. a monitor and a TV) will be distorted. Also, you might want the TV and monitor to show different images (mirroring is set by default. the same on both screens). Let’s move on to setting up the TV-PC bundle, first on Windows 10, and then on Windows 7 and 8.1.

Step-by-step instructions for connecting a TV to a PC or laptop

Let’s start directly with connecting TV and computer. To begin with, it is advisable to find out which connection method will be optimal, least expensive and will provide the best image quality.

Connectors such as Display Port or USB-C / Thunderbolt are not listed below, because such inputs are currently missing on most TVs (but I do not exclude that they will appear in the future).

How to customize the image on a TV from a computer and laptop in Windows 7 and Windows 8 (8.1)

In order to configure the display mode on two screens (or on one, if you are going to use only the TV as a monitor), right-click in an empty space on the desktop and select “Screen Resolution”. The following window will open.

If you have both a computer monitor and a connected TV running at the same time, but you do not know which of them corresponds to which number (1 or 2), you can click the “Define” button to find out. You will also need to clarify the physical resolution of your TV, as a rule, on modern models it is Full HD. 1920 by 1080 pixels. Information to be found in the operating instructions.

DisplayPort

Most desktop PCs with dedicated graphics cards have at least one DisplayPort, while this is less common on laptops. Some laptops are equipped with a modified mini-DisplayPort adapter. Sadly, TVs usually don’t have DisplayPort connectors. they’re primarily designed for desktop monitors.

In this case, a DisplayPort male to HDMI male cable is required, or you will need a DisplayPort male to HDMI male adapter. In both cases, the computer connects to the TV in the same way as via HDMI.

Windows 10 should recognize the TV as an external screen and offer it as extended or dubbed depending on your preference.

Modern computers without HDMI or DisplayPort often have an alternative USB-C connection. Keep in mind that not all USB-C ports support video output. it’s just an interface that doesn’t promise anything other than USB 3.2 connectivity. Check your computer’s specifications before assuming your USB-C port supports HDMI and DisplayPort output.

In this case, a male-to-male cable with USB-C on one end and HDMI on the other is required. A USB-C adapter with a USB-C male to HDMI jack will also work.

As with a standard HDMI connection, Windows 10 must detect the TV as an external display.

This port was never really intended for video transmission. Unlike DisplayPort and HDMI, it requires third-party DisplayLink drivers. This method works best with the blue USB ports (USB 3.0, USB 3.1) shown in the image above because of their speed. However, DisplayLink’s system requirements also specify older non-blue USB 2.0 connections that are slower.

This method requires an adapter or dock with an HDMI port as shown in the image above on Mokai Start. Most of them will automatically install DisplayLink drivers when they are plugged into a computer’s USB-A port. However, these drivers may be out of date, so you need to download and install the latest version directly from DisplayLink.

After you plug in the adapter or dock and install the driver, Windows 10 should detect the TV. Please be aware that video quality may vary as PC relies on third party software.

VGA and DVI

VGA, short for Video Graphics Adapter, first appeared in 1987 and only supports analog video signals. It cannot boast of versatility, but in some it will be useful. Use a male to male cable with VGA on one end and HDMI on the other, or use a VGA male to HDMI female adapter. Mini-VGA is the smaller option.

Digital Visual Interface, abbr. DVI. (digital video interface) is a later development and is still used in some exceptional cases. There are seven options for this interface: DVI-I Single Link, DVI-I Dual Link, DVI-A, DVI-D Single Link, DVI-D Dual Link, Mini-DVI, and Micro-DVI. This variety makes it difficult to find the right adapter, so check your PC’s specs before purchasing to determine the right cable or adapter.

Windows 10

All modern desktop monitors and TVs are equipped with HDMI ports. Often there are multiple ports on the back or side panel. Most desktops and many laptops also offer this connection option, making it one of the easiest ways to connect a computer to a TV, especially considering that both video and audio signals are transmitted using just one cable.

Two smaller versions of this interface are also in use today. Mini HDMI and Micro HDMI.

To connect two devices, connect one end of an HDMI male to male cable to a port on your TV and the other end to your computer. Windows 10 recognizes the TV as an external screen, which can be verified by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing Display Settings from the pop-up menu.

To display the Windows 10 desktop on your TV, grab your remote and cycle through connections until your PC’s desktop appears.

If the image is distorted, do the following:

Right-click on the desktop and choose Display Options from the pop-up menu.

Select your TV on the diagram. The main screen should show “1”, and the TV should show “2” or more if more than two displays are connected.

Here you can change the screen resolution, orientation and scaling. You can change the refresh rate if necessary. Here’s how to do it:
