Here’s a detailed look at how to complete the connection process, and which devices you can use for your Honor smartwatch.

In appearance, the Honor Band 5 is not much different from its predecessors. Similar size, same control button below the screen. Looks like a classic fitness tracker.

The differences are noticeable if you look closely at the device. No physical buttons on the case. From below of the display is a number key, marked with a golden circle.

The tracker is controlled with it or by swiping the screen. It can be activated in one of two ways. by pressing the numeric button or by wrist gesture.

The physical buttons are not needed, although at first it is unusual without them. After switching from the Samsung Galaxy Fit unwittingly constantly fumbling for the button on the side edge to turn on the screen. But it’s a matter of habit.

Giving up the buttons for a reason. Body is water resistant up to 5 ATM. In practice, this allows you to use the tracker under the spray. For example, in the rain or in the shower. And dive into fresh water.

Comes with silicone straps. Trainor one. Its location changes so that the strap does not dangle. The straps are removable. If you do not like the color from the box, you can choose another to your liking.

Honor Band 5 fitness bracelet review

The Honor brand is rapidly updating its Honor Band fitness bracelet. A year ago we tested the third version, in March 2019 the fourth version was released, and at the end of the summer the fifth version came. And the first batch of Band 5 sold out almost instantly. But we had to wait a little bit and now in our country you can easily buy the novelty, and even at a very attractive price: 3000. Previously, for that kind of money, you could only count on a minimal set of features. What about now??

We must admit that in terms of features Honor Band 5 is not much gone from its predecessor this is quite logical, because for a few months it was hardly possible to radically update the product. And the main feature of the Honor Band color AMOLED screen debuted in the fourth version. True, the new model claims an AMOLED True Color display probably improved. There was also water resistance, swim mode and other workouts (but the new bracelet has more of them).

Meanwhile, the Russian version of the Honor Band 5 did not receive NFC-module, which, however, in our country is practically useless, to pay with it all the same will not work.

Overall, the real differences from the Honor Band 4 here are minimal. However, even at the start of sales Band 5 is cheaper than its predecessor. And since we didn’t have an article about the Band 4, let’s take a look at what the device is capable of and how competitive it is on its own, without linking to the previous model.

Honor Band 5 specifications

  • Screen: AMOLED, touchscreen, color, 0.95″, 240×120
  • Water resistance: yes (5 atm)
  • Strap: removable
  • Compatibility: Android 4 devices.4 and newer / iOS 8.0 and newer
  • Connection: Bluetooth 4.2
  • Sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate sensor
  • The camera: no
  • Internet: no
  • Microphone: no
  • Speaker: no
  • Indication: vibration alarm
  • Battery: 100mA·ч
  • Dimensions: 43×17×11.5 mm
  • Weight 23g

Well, everything is quite standard. But, as we know, the specifications in the case of fitness bracelets is half the battle. No less important are the capabilities of the software and the behavior of the gadget in real operation. This is what we’ll talk about next.

Design

The bracelet comes with a small cable USBMicro-USB and a charging element. The last one here is the same as in the previous generations is attached to the back side so that the contacts match, and then we connect the Micro-USB cable to it.

It must be said that the design of the bracelet itself has remained virtually unchanged for three generations. It’s still a soft silicone strap with the halves attached to the main unit.

This unit has no mechanical buttons and controls other than the touch screen. The screen only responds to touch when it is already on. And to wake it up, you need to touch the circle marked touch area under the screen.

The surface has a slight bulge (2.5D, as the manufacturer calls it). We have not disassembled the device and therefore can not say with certainty whether there is a similar bend in the matrix itself. Most likely, the display is flat after all. Either way, and the glass bend is minimal.

On the back surface of the main unit is only a heart rate sensor and the aforementioned contacts for charging.

Like the Honor Band 4, the Band 5 strap has a standard watch-type clasp, not with pins like the Band 3. You can’t say one is better than the other, it’s just two different variants.

In general, the design of the bracelet is still functional, the device sits comfortably on the hand, it is possible to swim and do sports in it. But the desire to admire yourself, even in the first days after the purchase, the gadget does not cause.

Regarding usability: perhaps what’s missing is at least one button that could switch the screen on and off.

The screen

As already mentioned, the bracelet has a 0.95 diagonal color touchscreen display″ and 240 resolution×120. The display of the bracelet uses an OLED matrix. Microphotography shows that the matrix is composed of red, green and blue subpixels in equal amounts.

In the test for strobe effect reveals the presence of zone modulation brightness, and hardware test shows that its frequency is about 230 Hz. The overall quality of the screen is good: it’s quite bright, has good anti-reflective properties and has high definition. Colors are clearly more saturated than sRGB coverage colors, but in this case this is not a disadvantage.

Software and features

Let’s see what the bracelet can do. To work, it has to be connected to the Huawei Health mobile application, which is well known to us from other devices of this manufacturer.

There are no surprises here, so we will not dwell on general descriptions, but go straight to the most interesting training and sleep.

Workout

Honor Band 5 has 10 workout modes.

  • outdoor running
  • Running on a treadmill
  • indoor walking
  • bike
  • cycling
  • swimming in a pool
  • free workout
  • indoor walking
  • rowing machine
  • ellipse

Most of these can track heart rate, including setting thresholds that the bracelet should signal when it reaches.

Since we didn’t test the Honor Band 4, we were most interested in exploring the swimming mode. The well-known problem with many fitness bracelets: even with 5 atm protection, allowing the device to dive to depth, they do not give any valuable statistics on the swims at best record the time and total distance traveled. Fortunately, the Honor Band 5 isn’t one of them. Although it’s not all smooth sailing either.

In the screenshots above and below is the report of one workout, during which a 25-meter pool was overcome in one direction in breaststroke and in the other on the back. It is obvious, that the bracelet is not always correct in determining the style (you can check the number of strokes to see if it was wrong, not the author). But even the number of strokes is often wrong too. Because of this, all the statistics turn out to be inaccurate. The author is not an athlete, but swims much more steadily than the bracelet reports. SWOLF and stroke rate can’t vary that much.

But, however, the big plus is that the 3000 bracelet can in principle collect such extensive statistics. And accuracy can be corrected in future firmware (which hopefully will be done).

From the list of workouts that appeared only in Honor Band 5, we checked Cycling a bike ride outside the gym (in Honor Band 4 only Cycling was available).

Bracelet, connected to a smartphone with GPS, allows you to build a route on the map, it captures the speed, measures heart rate, counts calories and, of course, shows the total duration and range of travel.

The disadvantages: the bracelet does not understand stops. Because of this the overall statistics suffers. That is, if you just stop and stand there for, say, five minutes, the bracelet apparently thinks you’re just driving very slowly. As a result, the average speed is lower. Simply put, if you stand for five minutes and drive for five minutes at 15 km/h, the bracelet thinks that your average speed for 10 minutes was 7.5 km/h. In a purely physical sense this is correct, but the use of such information for fitness?

If you pause when you stop and then start again when you start moving, the data will be more revealing. But, for example, when really walking, it is, to put it mildly, not very convenient.

This complaint, however, is not the bracelet itself, but the application. Many sports programs have an auto-pause mode, which excludes breaks from the race statistics.

Another interesting feature of the bracelet is sleep quality analysis. Importantly, the Honor Band 5 relies here not only on the ratio of sleep phases (bad, for example, when deep sleep is quite low), but also on the quality of your breathing (t. е. its stability).

The detailed sleep analysis function is called Huawei TruSleep, and, according to the disclaimer, it is supported only when you rest for three hours or more. True, if you have a brief daytime nap, the bracelet will also record that.

Overall, there doesn’t seem to be anything revolutionary in terms of sleep tracking, but you get a deeper analysis of the same data that any similar devices collect, and there is also help for each item (for example, you can click on the Deep Sleep line in the app and read what it is and what values are considered the norm).

The bracelet also has an alarm clock function, both regular and smart. In the latter case, the device will try to select the optimal moment for a gentle awakening in a small interval relative to the set time.

Of course, like any other fitness gadget, the Honor Band 5 also tracks just steps, outside of any workouts. But here we noticed one oddity. Look at the screenshots below.

It seems okay, but do you think it is realistic to take almost 30,000 steps in two days and not once climb at least one floor level? In fact, on both the first and second day there was a lot of climbing. Let’s say more: on the day in which 7,333 steps were taken, there was a climb up a fairly high mountain. But for some reason the bracelet did not track this. Basically, it’s further confirmation that the inaccurate swim determinations weren’t an accident or the inaccuracy of a particular mode. We can only hope that the manufacturer will solve this problem by software means.

Of the other features of the Honor Band 5, we note the display of notification text (without smiley faces) and eight watch faces (there were fewer before).

And also a timer, stopwatch, activity reminders, smartphone search and smartphone camera control mode (the latter only with Android).

Measuring blood oxygen levels

In August, the bracelet went on sale in Russia (incidentally, our country was the second in the world after China) without one of the interesting features discussed during the global announcement of measuring blood oxygen saturation. As first reported by iXBT.com, Band 5 hardware supported this feature, but it was disabled programmatically for the time it took to get permission to collect this kind of data in our country. Oddly enough, it took barely more than a month, and in late September a firmware update came out, bringing back the promised.

Another item appeared in the menu: SpO2. Before the measurement, the bracelet warns not to move. In fact, it says the same thing before you measure your heart rate, but in this case it is no longer a recommendation, but a requirement if you do not put your hand on the surface and do not measure, then Band 5 will not give you the result, but will only repeat the instruction.

And the result is a number from 0 to 100 percent. precisely, you are unlikely to see 0 and other small numbers, since levels of 85% and below require urgent medical intervention. A saturation of 95 to 100 percent is considered normal.

In the appendix, the history of measurements is not saved, so you can’t see the dynamics. At least this is the case with the current version of Huawei Health.

We didn’t have a reference medical oximeter to compare results, but the index changed as expected: if you went out into the fresh air or did quick deep breathing, it went up to 98%-100%, and in a stuffy room or at the beginning of the exercise, when the heart had not yet had time to respond to the load, it went down to 93%-95%.

Honor notes that Band 5 is not a medical device, the bracelet is not intended for diagnosis, treatment or prevention of disease, and the results of measurements can only be used for personal reference purposes.

Music control

This is the second feature that Band 5 didn’t have originally, and which came to the bracelet after installing the September update. Remote control playback moved into another screen first if you swipe from the top down from the main (dial). You can play or pause music, switch tracks, and change volume.

autonomous operation

We tested the bracelet by turning everything to the max except the screen (through the settings you can make it so that it will not turn off at all). So the use was very active, and in this mode the bracelet quite lived the claimed six days. With a color screen and constant heart rate measurement this is a great result. Training, understandably, reduces this time, and if you turn off heart rate measurement, on the contrary, we get a significant increase in battery life.

Honor Band 5 is a great device, especially at this price. And, perhaps, we could finish the article with the well-known meme Shut up and take my money, but still we have to add a fly in the ointment.

As our tests showed, either the bracelet does not quite accurately work sensors, or it is not flawless in interpreting the data, but we noticed some inaccuracies in the statistics both in simple walking and swimming mode. We want to believe that these are software defects, which can be corrected remotely by updating the firmware. But one way or another, we can’t close our eyes to them. The second comment is already on the part of the picks: the design still seems a bit dull, and for three generations it could have been changed.

But even despite the problems noted, in terms of price to functionality Honor Band 5 now has few competitors.

Honor Band 5 fitness tracker review

This review will focus on the Huawei Band 5 fitness bracelet. Let’s take a closer look at the accessory and compare it to the previous version.

Where to Buy?

Specifications

The main features remained at the same level as the Honor Band 4. To be sure, let’s compare:

Honor Band 4 Honor Band 5
Screen 0.95″ 120×240 pixels 0.95″ 120×240 pixels
Weatherproof 50 м 50 м
Bluetooth version Bluetooth 4.2 Bluetooth 4.2
Battery 100 mA-h 100 mA-h

Strange that Huawei has not upgraded the Bluetooth version, increasing the range of the new fitness bracelet.

Packages

If you compare it with the Honor Band 4, the packaging is nicer, and the package is the same. With the tracker includes: instructions, cradle, cable USB. microUSB (about 17 cm) and warranty card.

Appearance and features

Externally the new tracker remained the same. For clarity, let’s compare the Honor Band 5 with the Honor Band 4:

The strap remained unchanged, which means that it is still securely attached to the body with a plastic retainer, so it will be impossible to lose. To remove the strap, simply remove the plastic clip, then you can remove the strap. After a while, in the place where the strap is attached, dirt collects, but this is a trifle, which moreover is not visible.

At the bottom of the tracker installed heart rate sensors and charging contacts. Attaches the cradle to the contacts very clearly. In the pictures below you can see how the clock looks like from both sides. I would like to note the weight of the watch, as the tracker almost does not feel on the hand. In the new version it is also possible to know the exact percentage on the bracelet. The previous version did not have such a possibility. The fitness tracker charges in 90 minutes.

Connecting the fitness tracker to a smartphone

To connect you need to download a suitable application, in our case it is:

Next we open “Huawei Health” “devices” “ADD” “Smart Bracelet” “Honor Band 4/5” “HONOR Band 5-08E” pairing occurs, and at this point the fitness tracker screen:

Watch functions and features

There are many more dials in the new tracker, you can change to the one you like in the Huawei Health app. The dials are much more colorful and some are more informative. Here’s what the dials look like on your arm:

Owners of the previous version will immediately notice the difference in the interface, as it has become very colorful and modern.

After clicking on the home page, the screen will display:

  • Connecting to a device. You can see in the photo below that the watch is not connected to the phone, as the Bluetooth icon is not active.
  • Charge percentage. Previous version did not have this feature.
  • Unread notifications and weather

There are still 7 additional sections on the tracker:

  • Today’s activity.
  • Heart rate
  • Sleep
  • Workout
  • Tuning songs
  • SpO2, not pictured
  • Messages, no picture
  • Extras (settings, timer and stopwatch)

Pressing the sneaker. information of the day. Data Types in this section:

Next section “Heart rate”. You cannot see detailed information on the bracelet, only on your smartphone. The fitness tracker measures your heart rate accurately, as it has been compared several times to a blood pressure monitor.

Next is the “Sleep” section, which shows the time spent sleeping. Shows quite accurately, but there are bugs, such as happened today. A fitness tracker with “heart rate and sleep tracking” turned on lives about seven days.

Next section “workout”. There are ten types of workouts here:

  • outdoor running
  • treadmill
  • Walking outdoors
  • indoor walking
  • bike
  • exercise bike
  • elliptical
  • rowing machine
  • swimming in a pool
  • free workout

In training you can set a goal for yourself and, if necessary, set intermediate signals. During the workout, the tracker displays information, it is also possible to pause, resume and stop the workout.

The next section is “Music Setup.”. This feature was not on the Honor Band 4, which was sorely missed. If you are a music lover like me, this fitness tracker will definitely make your life easier. In this section you can:

Next section “”. Where the main settings are:

  • Timer
  • Stopwatch
  • Dials
  • Phone Search
  • Brightness
  • The screen is on
  • Battery
  • System

When you turn on the timer, the screen goes out after a few seconds, but not during the stopwatch. Pressing the “Find Smartphone” function will start yelling “I am here, I am here,” and it doesn’t matter if the sound on the phone is on. The brightness of the screen is 5 levels, you can feel the difference at each level. There’s also a “decrease brightness at night” feature that I’ve been using forever.

When a call comes in, the tracker screen displays the caller’s name. It is possible to reject a call through the clock. Incoming messages can be read, but if there are a lot of characters, you’ll have to reach for your smartphone. Sorry for these pics of the “Messages” section.

If the camera is running on the phone, the “camera” icon appears on the tracker. You can use this feature to start/finish videos and snapshots. This function works only with Huawei and Honor smartphones.

Huawei Health” application

Let’s talk about the app itself. Demonstrating the primary screen:

Monitoring Mode. You can set up to five alarms. There is a “smart alarm clock” feature. Notifications from applications can be set up by yourself in “Huawei Health”. If “Do Not Disturb” is enabled, no notifications will be displayed on the watch. The functions “Activation by lifting the device” and “Rotate to switch” I do not use, but they work correctly. By the way, with the “Do Not Disturb” mode enabled, the screen will not turn on when you raise your wrist, if of course this feature is enabled. On the “Setup Features” page, you can change the layout of the sections.

The app contains a bunch of data blocks. Each block is clickable, once clicked, the user gets more detailed information. Types of data:

I do not use the “constant heart rate monitoring” function, so the heart rate stats are blank. Now you will see what kind of athlete I am. Running workout can be customized.

Honor Band 5 surpasses previous versions in terms of features. I think it’s a great fitness tracker for the money. By the way, the tests showed non-critical inaccuracies in the bracelet in monitoring steps in simple walking, and in swimming mode. I think this will be fixed with the update. Updates are still coming out, so no need to worry. This tracker has few competitors in terms of price to functionality.
