Using iPhone to set up AirPods

If you are setting up AirPods for the first time, make sure that the latest software is installed on your device. Then follow these steps.

  1. Go to the Home screen.
  2. Open the case where the AirPods are located and place it next to the iPhone.
  3. An animated splash screen of the setup program is displayed on the iPhone.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. If you have AirPods Pro headphones, read the on-screen instructions.
  6. If you have AirPods Pro or AirPods (2nd generation) headphones and you have already set up “Hi Siri” on your iPhone, you can use it with AirPods. If the “Hi Siri” function is not configured yet and you have AirPods Pro or AirPods (2nd generation) headphones, the setup wizard will open.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. If you are logged into iCloud, AirPods are automatically configured to work with any of the supported devices connected to iCloud using the same Apple ID.

Listening to audio with AirPods

The AirPods removed from the case are already included and ready to use. And playback from the device will start automatically as soon as you insert them into your ears. If you remove one AirPods earphone, playback will pause, and if both will stop. If you use one AirPod and remove it, playback will pause, but if you insert it back within 15 seconds, playback will automatically resume.

AirPods are connected to the iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time. Sound switching between them occurs automatically.

Store your AirPods and AirPods Pro in the charging case when not in use. Keeping your AirPods in your pocket or bag may damage your headphones.

To play audio from another device through AirPods or switch sound to other headphones or speakers, follow these steps:

On an iOS device

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Press and hold the sound control card in the upper right corner of the Control Center to change the audio settings.
  3. Click the icon and select the desired device from the list. 1

On a Mac

Click the volume control in the menu bar and select AirPods Pro 2 Headphones or other speakers in the Output Device section.

Playback Control with AirPods Pro

  • To play or pause audio, tap the touch sensor on the AirPod. To resume playback, touch the sensor again.
  • To skip to the next song, double-tap the pressure sensor on the AirPod.
  • To skip to the previous song, tap the sensor three times.
  • To change the volume, say “Hi Siri,” and then say, for example, “Be quiet.” Or move the volume slider in the application in which you are listening to music, to the lock screen or to the Control Center. You can also open the Running screen on the Apple Watch, and then turn the Digital Crown to change the volume.

With AirPods Pro, you can control the level of audibility of the surrounding sounds. Press and hold the touch sensor to switch between Active Noise Canceling and Open Headphones. To configure an action that is activated by pressing and holding, go to the Settings menu Bluetooth AirPods Pro “Press and hold AirPods.”

Playback control with AirPods (1st or 2nd generation)

With AirPods, you can activate Siri and control audio playback.

When using AirPods (2nd generation) headphones, the phrase “Hello Siri” is used by default to activate Siri. By double-tapping the AirPod, you can start playing the current audio track or skip to the next.

On AirPods (1st generation), double-tapping by default activates Siri.

Regardless of your AirPods model, you can do one of the following when you double-tap any headphone.

  • Using Siri3
  • Play and pause audio content
  • Skip to the next track
  • Return to previous track
  • Disabling audio content

Using Siri

  • If you use AirPods Pro and AirPods (2nd generation), the phrase “Hello Siri” is used to activate Siri.
  • If you are using AirPods Pro, you can press and hold the touch sensor to activate Siri using your AirPod.
  • If you use AirPods (1st and 2nd generation), double-tap is used to activate Siri.

Siri can be used with AirPods to ask questions and make phone calls. Siri can also control music playback and check the status of AirPods. Below are some sample Siri requests.

  • “Play my favorites playlist.”
  • “Turn up the volume.”
  • “How to get home from here?”
  • “Go to the next song.”
  • “Pause the music.”
  • “What is the battery level in my AirPods?”

Using your phone and receiving messages

If someone calls you when one of the AirPods is inserted in your ear, Siri may report the call. To answer, tap the touch sensor if you have AirPods Pro, and double-tap the earphone if you have AirPods (1st or 2nd generation). Repeat these steps to end the call or switch to another.

Charging AirPods and Case

To charge your AirPods, put them in the case and close the cover. 4 AirPods are turned off and charged when they are placed in the case.

AirPods Pro headphones can be charged in the charging case with Qi wireless charging devices. When the case is charging wirelessly, tap the status indicator to view the charging status. A green indicator light means that the case and headphones (if they are inside) are more than 80% charged. You can also charge the case using Apple’s Lightning-USB cable with a USB-C or USB-A connector.

AirPods (1st and 2nd generation) can be charged in the wireless charging case or in the AirPods charging case. If you have a wireless charging case, you can use the Qi standard charger for charging. Any case can be recharged by connecting to the Apple Lightning-USB cable.
