How to change vpn on iPhone

VPN in iPhone: what is it and what is it for, how to enable and configure it for free?

Hello everyone! Let’s start with the question. what is a VPN in the iPhone and what is it for?. VPN (or deployed “Virtual Private Network”) is a technology that allows you to get complete privacy on the Internet. This happens due to the fact that you connect to a dedicated VPN server, and, as it were, use the Internet through it.

In this case, your IP address changes to another, and the communication channel is fully encrypted. Thus, you can have access to blocked sites. Also, if data is intercepted, attackers, special services or your ISP will not be able to read them, since they will be encrypted. The bottom line is this:

  • You become anonymous on the Internet.
  • Your IP address changes to another, because of this, the virtual location changes (USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, etc.), it all depends on the server to which you connected.
  • Data packets are encrypted.

NOTE! At the same time, the Internet speed drops slightly, all due to the principle of technology.

I will not describe all the subtleties of the technology, I think you have already understood the principle itself. But if you are interested, you can read more about VPN here.

Next, I’ll tell you how to set up and add a VPN connection on your iPhone and use it for free. Most likely you have already read other articles on this topic and have come across a lot of paid services. I managed to find free VPN. If you also have some options, then you can suggest them in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев. After verification, they will be added to the article.

NOTE! The instructions also work for iPad and all iPhone models: 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 5C, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max and later.

To connect, we will use the free OpenVPN program and a special configuration file.

  • Download and install “OpenVPN Connect” from “AppStore”.
  • After launch, click “Allow” and agree to the license agreement. click “AGREE”.
  • Go to the official website of the project. Now we only need to leave the “OpenVPN” checkbox and click on the filter button. After that, in any server in the “OpenVPN” column, click on “Config file”.

What is a VPN for iPhone for

Everyone loves free Wi-Fi hotspots, but rarely thinks that hackers can wield them, intercepting outgoing traffic. Including VPN, the user cuts off all possibilities of unauthorized access.

Avid travelers may find themselves in a country where many of their favorite services and sites are inaccessible. Using a VPN even helps Chinese users bypass the Great Firewall of China, not to mention the attempts of other countries to block unwanted resources. Since 1998, the Chinese have implemented the “Golden Shield”, which closes most of the external sites that the PRC party considers undesirable for citizens. The system is complex, so VPN systems are in high demand in China.

A less honest way to use VPN is to bypass the restrictions set by system administrators in offices. Often, firms block access to various services and this method successfully copes with bypassing restrictions.

Connect VPN directly to iPhone

In some circumstances, the user may need to directly connect their iPhone to the VPN server. This can be a public point and even a local network of some organization or a user’s home.

  • Go to the “Settings” application.
  • Open “General”.
  • Click on “VPN”.
  • Click on “Add VPN Configuration”.
  • Here you need to select the “L2TP” tab and then enter the following information:
  • “Description”. any name for the created connection will do;
  • “Server”. enter only the white IP address or domain name of the registered VPN server;
  • “Account” and “Password”. authorization data specified on the remote router.
  • “Proxy”. it is better to choose Auto, if you are not personally instructed to use another option.

Now we return to the main menu of the “Settings” application, where a new “VPN” slider has already appeared under the “Modem mode” item. It remains to turn on the slider in the active mode, and use another server to connect.

Choosing a VPN for iPhone

To begin with, VPN on iPhone can be installed with a separate application or manually configured. There are several types of VPNs. They differ in different technologies, capabilities and security levels.

  • PPTP is the underlying technology. A fairly fast standard with the ability to change only geolocation, but a low degree of protection.
  • L2TP. low data transfer rate, but good protection and the ability to change geolocation.
  • OpenVPN is the best option for reliability and high data transfer speeds. Also makes it possible to change geolocation.
change, iphone

As you can see, changing geolocation is not the only VPN task. The security and reputation of the service is very important if the user is worried about the safety of personal data.

In fact, the entire stream of information from the iPhone is passed through the service’s servers. Responsible firms do not decipher them, but only forward them from point “A” to point “B”. Basement VPNs can easily spy on what a user is sending from a smartphone or tablet.

Here is an important fact. only paid services, moreover subscription services, are considered really safe. It is very expensive to maintain a VPN infrastructure, so hardly anyone will become altruistic and distribute access for free without getting anything in return.

Most Popular VPN App

Contrary to the previous statement, the most popular iOS app is VPN Master. You can download it here. It has no restrictions and is free, but is monetized by displaying ads. Optionally, you can cancel advertising by purchasing a subscription.

The service is easy to use. The main screen immediately shows a large “Connect” power button. The application does not require additional settings. If you click on the “Optimal Location” field, you will be able to select the desired country where the company’s servers are located.

When the app is running, a new VPN icon appears in the top tray.

How to set up a VPN on iPhone

It is quite common for users to need a VPN service on their iPhone and iPad. In this guide, we will tell you about applications and manual VPN setup on Apple mobile devices.

The VPN system has become an excellent tool for maintaining freedom on the Internet and for the active activity of hackers. It is a virtual network spread over the standard Internet. Let’s say right away that such networks have really useful applications, and not just bad news stories.

Many users need access to these networks from iPhones and iPads, so iOS provides several options for configuring them. We want to share the easiest ways to get a working VPN connection on an Apple mobile device.

Caution about using VPN on iPhone

Direct use of VPN in any country in the world is not punishable by law. Please note that countries or individual organizations may prohibit the use of some sites or services.

Conventionally, the company can fine employees for using social networks during working hours. That is, for turning on the VPN, the user is not in danger, but for logging into your favorite social network through it, you will have to say goodbye to part of the salary.

The situation is similar with countries, but sometimes the rules are even stricter. Fines are higher, and visiting some services on the territory of the state is punishable by a criminal term.

VPN is great technology, but only in good hands. You should not do anything that can lead to the loss of personal data or a fine. Assess the risks based on the situation and the place of access to the network, and also do not forget that you can always contact the iLab service center for help.

Finding your.ovpn file

To set up your first server, the fastest way. is to download the.ovpn file from your provider’s website and then send it by email. Then you can open the file in your iPhone email app to start.

If you care about security, there are better alternatives like using a cloud storage like Dropbox or Google Drive. If you are on Mac, you can use Airdrop. However, we’ll go with a simple option to demonstrate how it’s done.

Create OpenVPN Connection on iPhone

  • Log in to your VPN provider’s website on the Internet.
  • Find your settings for manual configuration using OpenVPN. If you’re using ExpressVPN, for example, you’ll find them by signing in, clicking Set up ExpressVPN, then clicking Manual setup at the bottom of the list.
  • On the right side of the screen, you will see a list of server locations. Select a continent and then click a server to download the.ovpn profile.
  • Attach a profile to an email and send it to yourself or save it as a draft message.

Leave this browser window open; you will need username and password in a minute.

  • Open the app you use to check your email and find the email you sent yourself. Open it and click on the attached file.
  • The email application shows a selection of applications that you can use to open the file. Search for OpenVPN and click to open.
  • OpenVPN confirms that the file is ready to be imported. Click the green plus icon.
  • Click Let me set up a VPN connection. You need to confirm this with Touch ID.

At this point, you need to switch back to your desktop computer and look at the Manual Configuration instructions that you used earlier:

  • On your iPhone, enter the Manual Setup username and password provided by your ISP in the User ID and Password fields. Remember: this information does not match your Internet login information. So if you enter, for example, your email address, it will not work.
  • If you want to save your data, click the Save slider to turn it on.
  • Click Connect to test the connection and then click yes.

OpenVPN

OpenVPN Connect. it is an open source VPN application for iPhone. If your VPN provider offers downloadable.ovpn profiles, you can use OpenVPN Connect to set up your connection instead of using the provider’s own app.

This third party application will only connect to your ISP’s server network using the OpenVPN protocol using the credentials provided by your ISP. Apart from the protocol and open source application, the application is much more customizable than many third party applications.

If you choose this method, pay attention to a couple of things:

  • Each server has its own.ovpn file. If you just want to connect to one or two, the process is quick. If you need access to dozens, you need to set aside more time for customization.
  • You may receive a “fragment directive” error message. It is easy to overcome if you run into it; you just need to edit the.ovpn file in your text editor and remove the line. Below we show you what to do.

What you need

To set up a VPN, you need an iPhone capable of the latest iOS version. We are using an iPhone 8 Plus running iOS 11.3.

You will also need an account with a VPN provider. You can check out our top picks of VPN for iPhone if you haven’t chosen one yet, or you can start with a free trial if you’re not ready to pay for a monthly subscription yet. Please note that providers usually only offer free trials if you sign up through the app after it’s downloaded, not through their website.

If you are new to VPN, we recommend that you start by downloading your provider’s app from the App Store and follow the steps outlined in Method 1 below. After making sure everything works, you can experiment with methods 2 and 3, which are a little more advanced.

VPN app

All major providers offer their own app, and this is the easiest way to connect to your VPN. We are using the ExpressVPN app in this guide, but the steps we show here will generally be the same for all providers.

How To Use VPN On iPhone! (2020)

Once connected to the VPN, the connection should remain active until you turn it off or restart your phone.

Before getting started, we recommend that you register with a provider and then check your email to verify your new account.

It is also recommended to check in the “Software Update” section of the “Settings” app before you start to ensure that you have the latest version of iOS.

  • Find and download the ExpressVPN app on the App Store.
  • Open the app and click Sign in. You can also create a new account here if you don’t already have one, but remember to check your email and verify your account before proceeding.
  • Sign in to the app using the same login details you use to sign in to the ExpressVPN website.
  • Click Allow to let the app create a VPN connection on your iPhone. You will be asked to confirm this with Touch ID.
  • Choose if you want to allow the app to send notifications. It’s not obligatory.
  • Click Allow if you want to send your connection data to ExpressVPN for analysis. Again, this is optional and refusing will not affect your VPN connection.

This is it. ExpressVPN is now installed and configured on your device.

The app will automatically choose the best one for your current location and connection, but you can change it if you need. Just click Select location to switch.

Please note that the VPN icon is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen to confirm that you are successfully connected.

How to deal with a fragment directive error is not supported

If your connection is not established, you may see a message stating that the fragment directive is not supported by the application.

To fix this, go back to your computer and open the.ovpn file in a text editor.

Find the line that starts with a word fragment, delete it, and save the file. It is important not to change anything and make sure the file extension is still.ovpn.

Send the file to yourself again and repeat the second and third sections of the above sequence.

manual settings

Configuring a VPN connection manually. this is an amazingly fast process. It’s also a good way to save space on your device, as all connection details are saved in the iOS settings app. It only takes a few minutes to set up.

If you are already using the app to connect, you can uninstall it from your iPhone before proceeding.

Keep in mind, however, that you will be limited to using L2TP / IPSec and will miss out on additional features. such as Killswitch. you get with the app.

You don’t need to download anything for this process. You will need to find detailed information on manual configuration on your ISP’s website. If you are using ExpressVPN, make sure you select Manual configuration and then LT2P / IPSec to show the correct information.

  • On your iPhone, open the Settings app, tap General, then tap VPN.
  • Click Add VPN Configuration.
  • Click Type and select L2TP.
  • Fill in the rest of the fields as follows:
  • Description: Any text of your choice

  • secret: 123456
  • Send All Traffic: Included.

Save the profile, then tap the switch to connect. Your VPN will stay connected in the background while you use other apps.

Setting up a VPN on iPhone or iPad

Many owners of Apple smartphones are intimidated by setting up a VPN on the iPhone: this procedure is associated with something complicated and difficult for an ordinary user. But using popular applications, you can set up VPN in a few clicks, including for iPad and iPod Touch.

What is VPN and why is it needed

VPN, or virtual private network, is a reliable way to protect the data that you transfer over the Internet. Technically, a VPN is a separate encrypted channel within a shared global network. When you connect to the Internet via a virtual network, you use the same sites and applications, but as if on top of the connection provided by your ISP. This means that a working Internet is required for VPN to function.

After connecting the virtual network on your device, all the data that you transfer will first pass through a secure channel to the VPN server, and from there go to the open Internet. Thus, neither the ISP nor the attackers will be able to see which pages you visit, and your data, such as passwords, will be reliably protected from theft.

There is another undeniable advantage of using a virtual private network, which has become especially important in recent months, when Google services and many other sites turned out to be accidentally blocked by government agencies in pursuit of lawbreakers. Using VPN, you will be able to use your usual resources without interruption.

How to manually set up a VPN for iPhone or iPad

For a better understanding of the VPN activation process, it is worth considering the manual configuration method. As a VPN service, the example below uses a free VPN Gate project, L2TP / IPsec technologies and iOS firmware.

  • Go to the “Settings” application.
  • You need to select the “VPN” option (or “Basic” = “VPN”).
  • Click the Add VPN Configuration button.
  • Specify “Type”. L2TP.
  • In the “Description” field, write an arbitrary name for the connection.
  • After filling in all the fields, you will need to enter the address of the VPN server through which you want to access the Internet. To get it, go to vpngate.net/en/ and take a look at the large Public VPN Relay Servers table and the L2TP / IPsec column. It is possible to use only those servers that have a green checkmark in this column.
  • After making your selection, copy the lines with the ending. onengw.net or a numeric IP of your choice (the first option is recommended) in the “Server” field.
  • In the fields “Account”, “Password” and “Shared key” write the word vpn.
  • After filling in all the fields, click the “Finish” button.
  • To start using the virtual network, in the VPN settings menu, switch “Status” to “On”. If everything is in order, you will see the corresponding indicator on the top bar.

VPN setup using apps

The same can be done even easier using the free Betternet app. This is the easiest way to set up VPN on Apple devices. After installing and launching it, you will find only two buttons: Connect and Disconnect.

With the only tap on the screen, you can start a connection via VPN or disconnect it and start using the Internet directly. Many people wonder why it is free. If in the case of manual configuration we are talking about an academic project, then Betternet can be helped by installing free partner applications from the App Store.

The notion that only hackers and attackers need encryption is fundamentally wrong. Confidentiality of data transmitted over the Internet has long become a norm and a necessity, because information is expensive and privacy is inviolable.

Starting a VPN connection

  • Enter vpn in the “Username” and “Password” fields when using for the first time. Check the “Save credentials” checkbox. Click the Connect button to establish a VPN connection
  • After the VPN connection is established, the Connected status will appear in the corresponding entry from the VPN list. A VPN activation notification may appear on your Android device. Click on the message to view the status of the current connection.
