How to take portrait photos on iPhone 7 or other models:

  • Start the “Camera” program;
  • Swipe the phone to go to the modes menu;
  • Highlight the “Portrait” option to select;
  • Press the shutter icon.

Using camera settings

  • Aperture: you set the minimum f-value, that is 3.5, 2, 1.8., thereby reducing the depth of space in the image and reducing the number of clearly visible objects.
  • Focal length. Crank your zoom out on the lens as much as possible to achieve blur. Alternatively, use telephoto lenses where the focal length is 105 mm, 200 mm, etc. Wide-angle lenses will not give the desired effect.
  • Physical distance to the object (in meters). Take a few steps towards your subject. BUT: You can get close to the subject, but the camera will not want to shoot. This means that you overdid it and exceeded the acceptable minimum distance for photographing your optics. Step back slightly.
  • Focus ring, spot focus. The camera lens has an outer ring for manual focus adjustment. Adjust it if the blurred background cannot be achieved otherwise. Also, select not auto, but 1-point focusing in the settings, directing it to the desired subject. With the automatic option, the device will determine itself which parts of the image to make clear, but this situation does not suit us at all.

Note that all of the above methods work for one indicator. Depth of field in photography. This is the depth of field for the entire surrounding area that falls within the frame. And we need to strive to reduce it. Subject to the above points, only one area, usually in the center of the viewfinder and therefore the picture, will be absolutely sharp, and the rest, as it approaches the edges, will become increasingly blurred.

External accessories and items (special attachments, cardboard, etc.)

A translucent scarf can be used very successfully for these purposes. It will liven up the photo with brightness or add tenderness with pastel colors. The lights look interesting and funny; for this, an ordinary garland located near the lens is suitable. It is not necessary to arrange these objects symmetrically with respect to the main object: fill in the empty space with them on one side, and on the other, balance the composition with the main object. With special attachments, it’s easier. Just put on and take a photo.

How To Blurry Backgrounds On iPhone

Technical moments

It doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have, Canon, Nikon or, for example, Sony, a beautifully blurred background can be done on any of them, because the principle is the same. The main thing is to be able to use the capabilities of the camera. To a greater extent, this effect does not depend on the firm or the internal structure of the camera body, but on the optics, in particular on the aperture parameter (f). There are several ways to easily get the background out of focus. Let’s distinguish two groups:

How to get a beautiful blurred background with your camera?

Greetings, dear reader! We are in touch with you, Timur Mustaev. I am often asked the question of how to make a blurred background on a camera, and I always tell them that this cannot be done on a camera, you can do it with the camera and the lens adjacent to it. This is what will be discussed today in this article.

Of course, you can get a nice blur, but only in the image itself. And do it with the camera (not on it). The correct formulation of a question or problem is half the answer. So before experimenting with photography, you need to understand the terminology.

What is bokeh?

Today’s lesson will be as interesting and creative as ever. I’ll show you how to create an attractive blurred background in your photo. This is also called bokeh. As you may have guessed, the main object remains intact, and around it objects and the landscape disappears from the field of view, turns into a color spot, somewhat resembling fog.

It all looks very impressive, many people love bokeh for its ability to highlight the main character of the frame and enhance the sense of perspective of the entire photo. The first moment is significant for portraits, the second is more for the landscape.

I often see blurred backgrounds in commercial shots, including those of famous wedding photographers. But, perhaps, earlier this technique was more popular, but now it is losing its originality. Bokeh, natural or artificial, is pleasing to the eye, but no longer surprises anyone.

Making a blurred background

Let me remind you that you can play with the background not on the camera itself, but on the image with the direct participation of the camera and setting the settings. The only thing that we can do on the device is an adaptation of the type of an external attachment, in order to finally get bokeh in the picture. For those who still have a bad idea of how to achieve the effect of blurring or blurring the background of a photo, I sketched out a few SIMple steps:

  • Select a subject to shoot. Let’s say this is a person. Decide on the place where it will be located. Keep the character out of the background.
  • Attach the background blurring device (bag, light scarf, etc.) to the lens in such a way that it partially covers the glass at the edges. This is so useful for enhancing bokeh and creative experiences.
  • Set to the smallest aperture that is possible on your optics. You need manual mode, aperture priority can be selected.
  • Set up single-point focus and concentrate the main point on the person. Shoot.

By the way, you can use the services of image editors to create the desired blur. If you have a low quality technique, you will hardly be able to notice any blur in the image. This is where knowledge of Photoshop comes in handy.

There is such a Gaussian Blur tab in the filters section. Choose the area you want and you’re done! Beauty, and nothing more, and without the hassle of shooting. This is also convenient if there is no blur in the original photo, and you decide that it is necessary there after photographing.

How to get a blurred background in a photo. 3 main rules

One of the most popular questions for novice photographers is how to get a blurred background (blurred background) in a photo. This is understandable, since a blurred background makes the photo more interesting, emphasizing the subject. A photo with a blurred background immediately looks much more professional and more artistic.

To begin with, in photography, there is the term Bokeh (accent on the last syllable) for a blurred background. Despite the fact that the word sounds in the French manner, its roots lie in the Japanese language. True, the term Boke is usually called not just blur, but the artistic component of blur. For example. “This lens gives beautiful bokeh, and that one is very SIMple.”.

There is an opinion that to get a blurry background, or bokeh, you definitely need a high-quality expensive lens with a large aperture or a very good camera.

There are two misconceptions here. Firstly, the camera itself plays practically no role, since the background blur is created by the lens optics, and it can be quite good even on an “advanced soap box”. Secondly, indeed, with a good high-aperture lens, it is easier to get background blur and bokeh will be more beautiful, but this can only be achieved if other conditions are met, which will be discussed below.

The very same blur can be obtained on a SIMple whale lens and even on a soap dish, if you follow 3 basic rules, which will be discussed below.

Rule 3. Real distance

The third factor that affects the depth of field, the distance to the subject and the background. The closer the object is in reality to the lens, the less depth of field.

To blur the background, the distance from your camera to the subject should be many times less than the distance to the background. Let’s say you’re doing a portrait. A good blur will be if it is only 2-3 meters from you to the model, and 10-15 meters to the background behind it.

Therefore, we will formulate the third rule as follows. The closer the subject is to the camera and the further from it the background, the stronger the blur.

The toy is photographed at the same F, but at different focal lengths and different real distance from the camera to the subject

Of course, it is worth remembering that if, in order to obtain a long focal length, you have extended the lens zoom to the maximum, then you will have to step back to compensate for the zoom approach of the subject. Otherwise, in the example above, not the whole bear would have got into the frame, but only its nose.

Let’s try. DSLR SIMulator

Indulge in depth of field and background blur using CameraSIM’s SIMulation software.

  • Turn on the “tripod” checkbox
  • Set the mode to manual or aperture priority
  • Change parameter combinations. Distance, focal length, aperture
  • Click on “Take a photo!”, As the effect of the aperture value on blurring the background of a photo can only be assessed by the result. You will not see it in the viewfinder.

Rule 2. Focal length

Focal length is one of the characteristics of a lens and the second factor that affects depth of field and background blur. We will not go into a technical explanation of what a focal length is now. At the everyday level, we can say that the focal length is how much your lens “brings” the object. The standard range of focal lengths for “whale” lenses for DSLRs is 18-55mm. That is, at 18mm, our lens covers a large area, and at 55mm, we “bring” the object.

One scene at different focal lengths

Due to the peculiarities of optical schemes, depth of field depends on the focal length. At the same F value, at a longer focal length, the depth of field will be shallower. That is, the more the lens “zooms in”, the shallower the depth of field will be. What we need.

Hence the second rule. If you want to blur the background. Use long-focus lenses or push the zoom of your lens to the maximum “approach”.

When you change the focal length and the same F. We get a different blur

Rule 1. Open aperture and shallow depth of field

You may already be familiar with the concept of depth of field. If not, then DOF is the Depth of Sharply Imaged Space. Most often it is SIMply referred to as “depth of field”. Let’s say you are focusing on an object. This is the focus center. Anything in the frame that is sharp before and behind the subject is the depth of field. Over, the sharpness gradually decreases from the focusing point. Providing that very blur.

The DOF itself is the key to getting a blurry background in the picture. For blur, we need to get a little depth of field.

The depth of field depends on several parameters, one of which is the aperture value. Aperture is those petals inside the lens that can be closed or open, changing the size of the hole through which light passes through the lens.

The aperture value is characterized by the number F. The smaller the F, the more open the aperture. The larger the F, the more the aperture is clamped.

The smaller the opening (large F), the deeper the depth of field relative to the subject. The wider the aperture is open, the less depth of field.

Depth of depth versus aperture and distance

Take a look at the illustration above. The focus point is at a distance of 6.1 meters. The lower the F value, the less objects will fall into the field of focus. At f / 1.8, only what is half a meter from the subject and a meter behind it will be in the field of focus, everything else will be blurry. At f / 16, subjects will be quite sharp at a distance of even 6 meters behind the focusing point.

Thus, the first rule of obtaining a blurred background in a photograph is that the lower the F value (and, accordingly, the more the aperture is open), the more blurred the objects in the background. As you can understand, in the foreground, if there is one, we will also get blur.

Left. F22, right f2.8 with unchanged other parameters

Summing up

In order to get a blurred background in a photograph, you need to get a shallow depth of field relative to the subject. And for this it follows:

  • Open the diaphragm as much as possible
  • Zoom out as close as possible or use a telephoto lens
  • Stay as close to the subject as possible and move the background as far away from it as possible.

The background is much further than the real distance to the squirrel

Try and experiment! Remember that blur depends on the combination of the above three parameters.
You can get exactly the same result with different combinations of these three parameters.

If you do not have an expensive fast lens where you can set f / 2.8 or less, try to compensate for this with two other parameters. Shoot from a closer distance, at maximum zoom.

Sometimes the desired photo turns out to be unusable due to someone else’s watermark, signature or an extra object that accidentally got into the frame. This can be cropped, but sometimes it can be detrimental to the composition. We recommend such an option as blurring the background in the photo in the place where the unnecessary element is. You can smudge the whole photo around the central object.

Step. Add photos

Upload the snapshot to the program. In the start window, select the “Open photo” item and look for the desired image in the computer folders. Double click on it. The photo will appear in the workspace of the editor. Move on.

Bonus: how else can you use the Blur tool. Step. Blur background

Photo editor offers three tools to choose from: Blur Background, Filter Blur, and Blur Brush. Which one to use depends on the purpose, characteristics of the photograph and personal preference.

Blurring the background allows you to quickly and accurately shade the background. The tool is located in the “Effects” tab. The principle of operation is to outline the main object in the picture. Anything outside the selection will be blurred by the program with the specified intensity and feathering strength.

Blur distant objects with the “Blur background” tool

It is important to stroke carefully so that prominent parts of the background on the border do not stay clear. Such negligence will be clearly visible in the finished image. The contour must be closed, at the end of the stroke process, you must return to the starting point. Do not suffer in trying to get pixel by pixel, just double-click near the beginning to close the path automatically.

Select the object that should remain without blur

The blur brush is a more flexible tool. Feathering occurs only on those areas that you paint over by hand. With its help, you can blur the background only partially (only the edges or the outline around the shape), as well as clean up parts of the image that could not be blurred with the previous tool. This happens if, for example, the model puts her hand on her belt, and a closed area of the background turns out between the hand and the body.

We blend the background with a brush, leaving the figure of the man and the grass in the foreground clear.

The blur brush tool is located on the left side of the panel. Find the picture as a droplet. You can adjust the brush size, hardness and intensity of the blur.

The Blur and Strong Blur filters blend the image across the entire picture at once. In the top bar, click Image Filters Blur / Strong Blur. Next, select the “Undo Brush”, which is in the menu on the left, and use it to remove the blur from the main object in the frame.

How to take a blurry photo on iPhone

10 articles are not enough to describe all the advantages of the iPhone X, but one feature deserves special attention. The blurred background of photos (or the “bokeh” effect) is an option that has become available thanks to the top-end dual-matrix camera. It allows you to create stunning portraits with a focus on the foreground in the frame.

With the release of a new update, this function has become possible on the iPhone 7 Plus, but the owners of the iPhone 6 and 7 are less fortunate, since technically one camera is not able to make a blurred background in a photo on its own.

Fortunately, programmers have solved this problem by creating the FabFocus app, which allows users to create gorgeous portrait shots for iPhone 5, 5S, 6 and 7. In this article, we will show you how to blur the background on iPhone using this application.

The procedure is as follows:

  • Open the program and give it access to the “Photo” and “Camera” applications;
  • Take a snapshot or select a photo from the gallery;
  • Wait for automatic face recognition (takes from 10 seconds to 1 minute);
  • Correct the area within which the person is located (green);
  • Choose the strength of the blur and its format;
  • Complete the process and save the photo.

Fabfocus app is a unique tool for both novice photographers and people who prefer beautiful and high-quality pictures. The bokeh effect gives a portrait expression and makes it more accentuated.

Are you wondering how to blur the background in iPhone photos? Getting a beautifully blurred background can be difficult. But it’s actually easy! Keep reading to learn how to create beautiful photos with gorgeous blurred backgrounds on iPhone.

I’m ready let’s go!

To get started, we need Google’s free Snapseed photo editor. Download and open the desired photo in it.

Then everything is in order:

First, let’s adjust the brightness and contrast as we see fit. In this example, I will apply the Faces filter, it recognizes people in the photo, makes faces brighter, and darkens the highlights a little. You can play with the settings yourself or choose one of the pre-installed templates.

When all the necessary changes have been made to the photo, you can start adding blur. Select the appropriate filter from the menu.

Change the blur mode from an oval to a straight line (click on the circle icon in the bottom panel).

Set the point to the very bottom of the image so that the blur increases towards the top of the frame.

In the filter options, you can change the degree of blur, smoothness and vignetting around the edges. Set the first parameter higher if the background is too close to blur it more or less if it is far from the foreground.

The transition is adjustable by eye, but not overstated, and vignetting will add beautiful darkening in the corners.

You ask: what the hell is this, everything is blurry! Don’t worry, the magic of Snapseed is about to begin! Click on the Action Log menu in the upper block.

Open the section View changes.

Select the last Blur filter and click on edit.

Now we can add or remove areas that will be blurred in the image. To do this, turn on the invert mode and a mask for easy selection.

Zoom in with the usual gesture and start erasing the mask from the foreground. First, you can roughly erase everything with a large brush, and then zoom in to finely process the edges.

We carefully pass along the edge with our finger so as not to erase the mask from the background.

If you made a mistake, add a 100% blur with the arrow and draw a mask on the background.

If the picture contains objects located between the foreground and background, for example, a car, then you can set the blur to 50% or 75% and paint over this object so that the filter is not applied so much on it.

This is what the mask looks like in the end. Click on the checkbox and look at the result. Well how?

Not bad already, but the background remains sharp from below. If the subject is captured larger (only the torso), then the sharpness will fall on it and everything will be ok, otherwise we will have to repeat our trick.

Add the Sharpness filter again, but now place the dot on top.

Do not raise the blur intensity and increase the transition so that the center of the photo does not blur too much. Do not forget to completely remove vignetting here, otherwise it will overlap with the previous one.

Go through the Action Log again to edit the filter. We repeat the procedure with the mask.

Now that’s it! You can save and post to Instagram.

In most cases, you will not need to reapply the filter and everything will be completed in the 13th step. Here’s an example where you can get away with just blurring from above:

It was originally this is how it happened

Here, when applying the effect, I set the focus point at the bottom of the photo.

Now you don’t have to save up for iPhone 7 just for the sake of beautiful photos with a blurred background. This can be done on any iPhone and even iPad.

All photos were taken with iPhone 6.

How to blur the background in a photo?

Method one: radial filter

You can find the named tool in the “Retouch” section. Let’s get to work! Select an area in the image to apply the blur. A circle or ellipse will appear over the photo (depending on the resulting designated area). On the right pane, select the radio button next to Processing. Outside”.

Select the object and set the switch to “Outside”

Now let’s move on to the settings! Click the Sharpness tab. Slowly start moving the slider on the Blur scale to the right. Follow the changes on the screen.

Try to make sure that the model is not blurred during processing. Don’t make the background blur effect too strong. Otherwise, the objects in the background will be completely lost, because of this, the composition of the photo and your idea may suffer.
